Amazon.com essential recording

These excerpts were taken from the recording that has established itself as the standard by which all others should be measured. Herbert von Karajan's orchestra is no less than perfect, as much a virtuosic performer as the singers, evoking each moment's unique mood. Can there be any doubt that Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni were born to sing Puccini? Their sweet, creamy voices splendidly blend, creating a complete aural portrait of the bohemians' souls. Elizabeth Harwood is a wonderfully high-strung Musetta, with the vocal talent to support her many moods. After hearing these highlights, you won't be able to resist the whole set, which is the greatest recording ever of the world's most beloved opera. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars Opera.......2007-07-07

I ordered this after I heard Paul Potts perform a song from this opera on "Britain's Got Talent". He won, by the way, performing it beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars Best All-Around Boheme.......2007-04-11

Karajan's 1973 stereo version is the best all-around Boheme available. It stars his favorite soprano, Mirella Freni, and a young Luciano Pavarotti at his peak (unlike his post-climatic self these last decades). There is no faulting this version and an ideal way to explore Puccini and Italian opera generally.

5 out of 5 stars Tebaldi=95% perfect, Freni=110% perfect!!!.......2003-10-12

I second what Des Greux said, although I own a set of highlights of Tebaldi (with Bergonzi) in Boheme and feel that it is very close to ideal. In my mind Freni will always be the perfect Mimi, with her perfect phrasing, vocal acting, and pure tones. What more the timbre of her voice optimally suggests a character of vulnerability. Tebaldi sings Mimi very well, but one can't help feeling her big, full voice to suggest health rather than tuberculosis. I enjoy both Freni and Tebaldi in the role of Mimi, but Freni is a step higher. As for Beecham/Bjorling/De Los Angeles. I'd say that version is 90% perfect. I like Los Angeles as Mimi, but she really doesn't hold a candle to Freni OR Tebaldi (or even Callas).

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2003-04-06

The reviewer that criticized Freni doesn't know anything about singing. Freni can sing circles around Tebaldi. This is the best Boheme available. However, get the complete recording. You won't want to miss anything!

5 out of 5 stars a great recording, but what about Beecham?.......2001-09-18

there is little doubt that this is a great recording, but don't let the editorial review blind you to the fact that there is considerable dispute over whether this is the "greatest recording ever" of this opera. Beecham's classic 1950s recording with De Los Angeles and Bjorling is very much in contention. Beecham's vocal performances are superior, and even though it is in mono this does not detract from the sheer quality of the recording. I have both sets, and enjoy the differing qualities of each, Karajan's orchestra is better, but then again opera is all about voice....listen to both sets, it will give you more perspectives of this wonderful opera.

With the visually dazzling efforts of his "Red Curtain" film trilogy behind him (Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge), director Baz Luhrmann set his sights on Broadway and a reworking of his triumphant, career-forging 1990 Australian Opera production of Giacomo Puccini's evergreen tearjerker, La Boheme. With it now set in 1957, six young voices alternate in bringing the tale of the doomed love affair between the seamstress Mimi (Lisa Hopkins, Wei Huang, Ekaterina Solovyeva) and the writer Rodolfo (Alfred Boe, Jesus Garcia, David Miller) to life in its original Italian on this cast album. Other than using the vocal dream-team gambit, Luhrmann has played Puccini's music surprisingly straight in this production, a sharp contrast to the dizzying musical cut-and-paste of Moulin or his tellingly titled pop album, Something for Everybody. It's a wise tack, and wholly in step with the director's stated goal of emphasizing the story's timeless drama while keeping the operatic masterpiece true to itself for a new audience. The staging may showcase Luhrmann's dazzling production, but the music here is still pure Puccini. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Sometimes pleasing.......2007-01-16

This CD is a bit awkward. It's difficult to get a feel for any of the singers, as the music is divided up between all 6 of them.

There's some good singing on here, notably Jesus Garcia as Rodolfo. Others have compared him to a young Pavarotti, & I tend to agree. I watched & heard him all through college, & he has the effortless style & pure tone.

I'm not too fond of the other tenors, but I thought all 3 women did good jobs.

4 out of 5 stars well performance by the young musicians.......2006-08-31

I am not going to talk about who's review is fair and who's isn't. Everyone has the rights to comment on the performance base on their own interpretation . However, please keep in mind that, 1, this is a Broadway show/production, not an opera!!! 2, everyone in the show is classically trained, some of them are well trained.

Just a FYI.

3 out of 5 stars great to see, okay to hear .......2005-03-22

Of course this recording of La Boheme will not come near, let alone surpass, the likes of Callas or Pavarotti. But that's not a fair comparison anyway, because we must remind ourselves that this recording is a modern(ish) day take, a'la Baz Luhrmann musical panache. To have seen the live performance I must say it was quite a treat. But as for listening to this recording, I am impressed upon only with the youth and novelty. If you are interested in La Boheme in the traditional tried and true Puccini way, then look elsewhere at the deluge of excellent recordings of this great classic. (My favorite is the one by Berlin Philharmonic, Pavarotti and Frenni.) If you are looking for a different take, something different, something of the musical genre--remember operatic singing is very different from musical singing--then I would heartily recommend giving this one a try, but keep in mind that seeing it is the true delight with this production, in all its vivacious splendor. (Hint: Baz Lurhmann's Moulin Rouge was also either a hit or miss.)

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable when viewed live.......2005-01-15

I saw the show a week after its Broadway opening, and I have to admit, it is visually rather stunning, especially the L'Amour sign on stage. The cast is refreshingly young, and rather good looking... which hence may explain the rawness of their voices in the recording versus Pavarotti's. Still remember Pavarotti played the role later in his life than some of the cast members in this recording.

Enjoy it for what it's worth but don't take it too seriously. Opera is an art, not a science.

1 out of 5 stars WHOOPS........!.......2003-07-28

More than five stars for the CD cover and the tiny, tiny, tiny libretto with dy-no-mite photos circa 1957 ..... but in all fairness to the Young, Young Young cast ... this one's quite terrible.

One has to in all fairness {or unfairness} compare this version to the original 1993 Australian version WITH SINGERS, and there really is no comparision. David Hobson set the bar way, way high for any future Rodolfo as did Cheryl Barker's unforgettable Mimi. This present version just does not work on CD due to the confusion of the mixed cast - especially the highly 'indicated' theatricality of one of the Mimis - great in the looks department - but the emoting .....!

The original version tends to be a 'Method' Puccini - AND it works.

Try to get that [imported] CD instead - besides the original was recorded 'live' so the stakes were higher .....

5 out of 5 stars One for the Ages.......2004-09-08

I have to agree with Joseph Barker et al. This is a recording for the ages. I have been listening to it for nearly fifty years now (I think it's the first classical recording I ever bought), and I still thrill with delight (sounds corny but I can't think how else to put it) at the pure physical joy of this perfomance. Renata Tebaldi's Mimi and Carlo Bergonzi's Rudolfo still give me goosebumps, put a lump in my throat, bring tears to my eyes in exactly the way they did in 1959. It soars, man, it soars.

5 out of 5 stars This is best Raboheme........2003-07-22

This is best album you must possess even if you are not big opera fan. I don't like operas other than La Boheme especially this album. You must purchase this. I cannot tell other parts other than this highlight version but to the extent of this album, i can guarrantee that you will not regret your purchase.

Do you know how beautiful the voice of Renata Tebaldi as Mimi is? It's the voice of angel.!!

5 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Puccini Recording Ever Made.......2001-06-28

The 1950's gave us the only two possible choices for this much recorded opera. The first is the legendary recording of Sir Thomas Beecham with Jussi Bjoerling and Victoria De Los Angeles. The other is the complete version reviewed here, the most beautifully sung and recorded Puccini performance ever. Bergonzi, as usual, sings with a presence and intelligence that suggests much more than an echo chamber between the ears - unlike so many others. Tullio Serafin, then 78 years old, brings a warmth and beauty to the orchestral playing that is unmatched, and the bit parts contain great singers like Corena and Bastianini. Top all of this off with Renata Tebaldi as Mimi, here making the most beautiful sound ever to come from a human throat. This is a recording that still sounds fresh after more than 40 years, and remains the primary choice over many fine rivals.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Recording!.......2001-02-23

Although the complete set is a must and just highlights are not enough to enjoy this jewel, whoever buys this Boheme will experience the unsurpassed performances of Renata Tebaldi and Carlo Bergonzi. Really, who else would you want to hear singing "Mi chiamano Mimi"? She is simply the Mimi to which all others are measured. Mr. Bergonzi, his only studio recording of this role, will bring tears to the most demanding listener. If he was the first to sing "Celeste Aida romantically, imagine what he can do with the role of Rodolfo! But beyond them the supporting cast includes legends such as Ettore Bastianini, Cesare Siepi and the less popular Giana D' Angelo. The conducting is also supreme, handled by a true expert, T. Serafin. After so many years and so many recordings, this Boheme remains my first choice. Get it, and you will see why!

3 out of 5 stars Solti adds a touch of razor wire.......2005-09-24

Domingo and Caballe, here both relatively young, would have made a convicning Mimi and Rudolfo in another recording, but in this one the wiry, grainy RCA sound and hard-charge conducting from Solti make it pretty tough going. There isn't a touch of charm or romance, just a strong cast trying to keep up with Solti's coarse, driven conception. No thanks.

5 out of 5 stars From my review on the full-set.......2003-12-29

I agree Karajan's Boheme is wimpy. Who wants a wimpy set? This is the ultimate La Boheme. Domingo is at his youthful peak!! Domingo may not be the high note tenor par excellence, but he is the ultimate tenor par excellence who can produce high notes more powerful than the King of High Cs. Caballe produces ravishing tone and incredible floated pianissimi as Mimi. Milnes is nothing short of amazing. Forget the Karajan set, this is the ultimate La Boheme!! Yes, red-blooded Bohemians flesh and blood. Not a bunch of wimpy guys in Karajan's set (in Karajan's set, you almost feel like they will shriek when they see a rat).

If you can't afford the full set, try the highlights.

5 out of 5 stars BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY.......1999-05-17

One of the greatest La Boheme records in history, this has Montserrat Caballe as Mimi and Placido Domingo as Rodolfo under the baton of Sir Georg Solti. What results is a work that invokes a whole plethora of emotions from start to end. The vibrancy and involvement of the orchestra is well represented in the opening and in the scene at Cafe Momus. The orchestra also excels in the intimate moments like the conclusion to the garret scene where it beautifully accompanies the lovers to ecstatic heights. Montserrat Caballe woos us with her pensive and beautifully vocalised Mimi. From "Mi chiamano Mimi" she holds us enthralled and in rapture as she soars with her floated pianissimi. This is brought to a must apt climax where she floats the ending of "O soave fanciulla" with Domingo to perfection. This is unheard of in any other recording. Domingo charms with his potrayal of Rodolfo, his voice young and healthy. His reading of "Che gelida manina" is imbibed with passion and shows his voice at its most involved. The entire recording is like an experiment perfected, with the supporting characters well represented by Milnes, Blegen, Sardinero and Raimondi. Each and every scene unfolds with beauty and well-thought out continuity that captures our attention. One of the better recordings that can hold its own against any current competition.

This CD is a fine example of soulless marketing, bleeding hunks variety.

For those of you who like opera, get a real opera. Good performances of "La boheme" are easy to find. For those of you who like a particular singer or conductor, seek out that person's work. For those of you who want an introduction to opera or to top-flight singing, go elsewhere, there's plenty of good stuff to be found.

For those of you who want a genuine freak show, step right up, this is for you. Nowhere else are you likely to find both Andrea Bocelli and Herbert von Karajan on the same disk!

        Customer Reviews:

        2 out of 5 stars Deceptively advertised.......2003-12-06

I don't look for give-aways, but this seemed like a very good deal, like others I have gotten from Amazon. I have purchased several items from Amazon for half price, and it looked as if this was another of those opportunities.

The CD label looks the same, without the ability to enlarge it from the web page. I thought I was buying the full opera... and I will take the hit on it, but I this is not the complete La Boheme with Leinsdorf, Tucker, Moffo, and the rest.

The label is almost exactly the same as the complete opera in the same "RCA Goldseal" series, except for the small text box that says "highlights". I may have missed something on the web page, but I sat on the phone with my sister, for thirty minutes, looking between Amazon and another music site and couldn't pick out that this was the highlight CD and the other was the full opera, except the price. She thought it was the full opera, as well.

I guess the lesson is, don't buy it if you can't tell for sure exactly what it is. This one isn't clearly advertised and it shakes my faith in Amazon a little to say that. I have bought a lot from them and been very happy... but this one, got over on me, and I will eat the cost, because I have already opened it, but I won't trust them so easily, from here on. Just a minor reclassification of an online retailer.
