happy music.......2006-08-29
I could't offer a technical critique of this c.d,instead I'll attempt to describe the enjoyment it gave me.Imagine you're sitting in your car listening to the radio, not terribly enthusiastic about getting out to start work. You become aware there's a bright ,cheerful sounding tune being played-vaguely familiar,I find myself tapping out the beat and humming along-what's this called then? Then we get to the part I can identify-DAH-DAHdeDAHdeDAH-DAH-DAH-Oh,of course,it's the music they used in "The Hunters",oh the memories that brought back. That tune got me out of the car ,through the day's turmoil, and when I woke up the next morning at 3a.m.,it was still going throgh my head!Okay, log onto Amazon, click, click, all I've gotta do now is contain my impatience .The C.D. duly arrived, suffice it to say it exceeded all my expectations regarding quality and content and has become one of my favourites.
Vintage march collection for connoisseurs.......2000-05-26
It seems like the heyday for recorded march collections was the early stereo era. The classic Mercury recordings by Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble dating from that time no doubt contribute to that impression. In this collection, they demonstrate the seriousness with which they approach this repertoire by unearthing some lesser known (at least in the US) pieces to go along with the usual Sousa-esque fare. However, there is no sense that they scraped the bottom of the barrel: all of these marches are first rate. Even the less familiar marches will have you humming along in no time, so infectious are they. These performers bring their usual gutsy exuberance and the necessary polish, too. The sound is on the bold side so turn the volume down a bit for this one.

With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. This disc is a fine, varied sampling of Chanticleer's discography and should inspire listeners to search out all the complete albums. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17
If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.
Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.
Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18
Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.
A treasury.......2005-11-06
As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'
Chanticleer: A Portrait.......2005-10-26
This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices

Customer Reviews:
Solid Basic March Collection.......2006-08-07
Great solid basic collection, a real bargain with mostly outstanding performances. Having played several in bands and orchestras and sung one (the Rimsky Mlada), I have a good idea how they should go. As other other commentators say, there are better individual recordings, such as anything by Fennell and the Eastman band. The organ pieces just don't do this music justice, although a real cathedral organ can come close, but that's beyond these discs. The Nielsen Aladdin March is the new one for me. Berlioz by Solti is great! Buy it!
Bold and brassy mixes well with the rest.......2004-08-14
I am impressed most by the variety in 40 Famous Marches on 2 CDs, a Double Decca release. The performers include Philharmonic Orchestras, a Brass Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, organ, Symphony, and for nine selections, the Wiener Philharmoniker. I am not sure if the word schmaltzy ought to be applied to any of this, but the Wiener Philharmoniker often exhibits a unique sound which is not quite the same as any of the other selections. The final five selections are all performed by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble under Elgar Howarth in ADD/DDD format in 1983 and 1985. Two of those five are rousing marches by John Philip Sousa, another called `Entry of the Gladiators' is typical of songs played by live bands at circuses, and the remaining two are from movie soundtracks. `Colonel Bogey' is famous from the movie about British prisoners of war building a railroad bridge for the Japanese in World War Two, the Bridge over the River Kwai.
The major source of variety in these 40 selections is that many of them are taken from operas and even a ballet, Tchaikovsky's famous `The Nutcracker--March.' I originally found this collection when I was searching for `Funeral March of a Marionette' by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) which has a theme that is famous from its use by a television series hosted by Alfred Hitchcock. If you can't remember how that goes, you ought to buy this collection and listen for it early: it is selection 4 on the first CD. The main theme was fun to play and easy to learn in a book of piano lessons, but the rest is quite whimsical and worth listening to, and people who play organ with pedal notes might still be able to find music for playing the entire arrangement, difficult though it is for someone like me, who becomes confused when too many things are going on at the same time.
There was something on this CD that sounded weird, and I had to check to see what it was, and it was just someone playing the organ, but he was trying to play `The Ruins of Athens -- Turkish March' by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).
Something by Handel sounds so much like the beginning of a movie that I expect someone to start singing, `The hills are alive with The Sound Of Music,' but this CD is something else. The first CD starts and ends with marches from `Pomp and Circumstance' by Edward Elgar, so people who have been to a lot of graduation ceremonies will be expecting plenty of familiar music. The 6:32 time is slightly longer than the Wagner's `Tannhauser -- Grand March' on the first CD, but long graduation ceremonies may play it even longer, until all the diplomas are handed out.
Verdi, Strauss, Schubert, Prokofiev, Berlioz, these famous composers might be recognized by people who know music, but the `Wedding March' by Felix Mendelssohn is famous with everybody for what it is used for. If you haven't heard it lately, maybe you should hear it a few times so you won't be so nervous the next time it comes around.
40 Famous Marches - a great collection!!.......2003-11-21
This is a wonderful collection. What a wide collection of exciting pieces, all in one affordable package!! It encompasses so many composers and styles, from the majesty of Elgar and Walton, to upbeat Sousa to schmaltzy Strauss. It also includes such classic marches as Meyerbeer's Coronation, a pinnacle of the French opera style, the timeless Wedding March of Mendelssohn, and the brilliant organ piece, Marche Triomphale of Sigfrid Karg-Elert. There are also some interesting oddball selections like the mysterious Things to Come of Bliss (composed for the H.G. Wells film), the jaunty Chabrier marche, and oriental flair of Nielsen's Aladdin.
In reading some of the other criticisms, it is true that the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble perhaps is not the best or most noted ensemble. However, overall, the pieces they play are either Sousa or patriotic-sounding tunes. Their only forays into the true classical realm are the Grand Marches from Tannhauser and Aida, and they are not half bad. So don't let those pieces keep you from buying the CD - 1) because most of the songs they do play are great and 2) they only play in 1/4 of the music....
Classics on Parade.......2003-05-01
If you're looking for a collection of marches from classical music, this would be a fine one to get.
It contains recordings made from 1958 to 1996 by some of the world's great orchestras, plus several numbers by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, and four arranged for organ.
The first 35 marches include many of the best-known classical marches, plus three "coronation" marches, written as far back as the end of the seventeenth century (The Prince of Denmark's March) up to 1954 (The Dam Busters). The last five pieces are "popular" marches played by the Jones Ensemble.
The liner notes give a nice history of marches, including where most of the ones in this collection fit into that scenario.
A great collection of marches by classical and popular music "masters".
Too, too much Philip Jones Ensemble.......2003-04-17
A mixed bag of music, 40 FAMOUS MARCHES compiles a good many marches - some not too common.
The CD has it's high points:
1. Chicago Symphony (under Solti!) playing Berlioz's Hungarian March (love that trombone excerpt - BAM!)
2. London Philharmonic playing Prokofiev's "The Love for Three Oranges" March
3. Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 (also London Philharmonic)
BUT... There's some real stuff on here, too. I must concur with a prior reviewer: FAR TOO MUCH Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Case in point - Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever, as played by PJBE is completely devoid of the energy and fire it needs. The trombone countermelody at the end is just NOT THERE (you'll strain to hear it). There's just no way this is right. PBJE is great in their setting, but this is just not it.
Overall, this CD might be a good compilation for the novice listener, but I would recommend the more experienced (or trombonists, like myself) purchase works by individual symphonies that include the music you desire - a more expensive, yet more expressive alternative.

This opera, about an orphan girl who is adopted by a whole regiment of Napoleon's army (meaning that anyone who wants to marry her must get the regiment's consent) combines sparkling comedy with spectacular vocal writing--not only for the soprano but for the tenor who, in one legendary passage, must produce nine high Cs in quick succession. Pavarotti's performance in this production, fairly early in his career, ranks with his Nemorino in L'Elisir d'amore, among the best of his recording career. Sutherland finds the role of Marie congenial, in terms of characterization as well as vocally, and the conducting is generally acceptable if not spectacularly good. --Joe McLellan
Customer Reviews:
The Diamond Setup in a slightly less shiny tone........2007-03-01
In one recent review here by 'Kid' - 'Joan Sutherland sings the role with more beauty of tone in abundance, but to the death of any real dramatic commitment.'
This is a complete version of La Fille du Regiment. Arias of the same opera performed on other occasions by Sutherland and Pavarotti are available in other CDs - in recital albums.
In an even earlier recording (by London also), Pavarotti turned up a even more spectacular 'Ah Mes', and in her own box set, 'The Art of Joan Sutherland', Sutherland did a even better Marie, though in only one aria.
I share Kid's view that the drama here is less vividly captured than in, say, the DVD version of Ciofi and Florez (2005).
Somehow, Sutherland, and also Te Kanawa and Mattila, and more recently Netrebko, are those 'clear' voices that tend rather easily to lapse into uncommitted performances(I think I will be hacked by their respective fans for this comment, but it is my gut feeling nonetheless).
Strangely so, since all of them (or nearly all) are considered to be capable of producing great dramatic effects by their voices (sometimes they are termed 'big-voiced'). I think it is firstly a matter of emotional commitment, and secondly the ability to shade one's voice to bring out different moods in a single song or aria. Sutherland, in her early career, possessed one of the most envied soprano voices. It was so beautiful that listening to it per se will make you want to cry. It was girlish, it was silvery, it was nimble, it was expressive...Not so after she had her nasal operation. Thereafter, her singing was largely redeemed by her outstanding technique, but that great voice was simply no longer there.
Marie calls for a more girlish voice. The Sutherland here sings in full glory, but without that vital girlishness. Tonio here sounds some what less 'energetic' in this 1968 Kingway Hall recording than the earlier one made in 1967. Had Pavarotti been singing this Tonio too much during the 12 months previous to this recording?
The set contains a couple of valuable historic photos of Pav without a beard. Quite a handsome figure, by all standards!
A Great Recording of an Opera That Should Be Performed More Often.......2006-11-19
With the lighthearted music of Donizetti's LA FILLE DU REGIMENT, you'd hardly know that it takes place in the midst of a war and tells the story of a young woman abandoned at birth and left to the benevolence of an army regiment, all the while being in close proximity to the mother who abandoned her. This opera if anything should be a tragedy, or at least a drama. Instead we have one of opera's happiest endings and an operas that is just plain magical to hear. It certainly contains some of Donizetti's best music, or at least some of his most enjoyable melodies.
Chances are LA FILLE DU REGIMENT would be performed on stage if there were casts capable of the arduous score. This set has what many consider the finest cast assembled for the opera. The lead tenor and soprano roles certainly require agile voices able to reach some high notes. The tenor aria Tonio's "Ah Mes Amis, Quel Jor de Fete" has to be one of operas most taxing works and very few perform the work as written. The soprano role of Marie is just as challenging. This set has a pair that could arguably be the best performers who have ever attempted the roles of Tonio and Marie: Luciano Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland. This recording, and early one for Pavarotti, shows us just how nimble his voice was in the early years of his career. It's a role he didn't perform when his voice got a bit darker, but when he had the ability, his interpretation of Tonio was magical. Sutherland's Marie is likewise one of her best roles and she's more than at home. Monica Sinclair performs the role of the Marquise. While I would not consider Sinclair's performance exquisite, her voice matches the role. As is so often the case in Sutherland/Pavarotti recordings, conductor Richard Bonynge pulls the various cast members, chorus, and orchestra together for an overall performance that is unsurpassed.
My guess is that anyone unfamiliar with this opera who purchases this recording will fall in love with it. I think it happens to anyone who hears this opera beginning with its sparkling overture to all the way to its ending. Fans of Sutherland, Pavarotti, or both will be reminded of why they love these performers so. French opera lovers will enjoy it because even though it's by an Italian composer, it was written for a French audience and the libretto was originally French, but it has all that makes Italian Bel canto opera such an experience. In short, it's an opera that has been loved by many for good reason and will continue to be a favorite for years to come.
Morbleu! Corbleu! .......2006-10-05
I finally got around to buying this SUPERB recording a few weeks ago, and it has not been far from my CD player ever since. This has to be one of the most utterly delightful operas ever written. Sutherland is in top form here, singing a vivacious and lively Marie. In this recording, we get the chance to listen to her effortlessly take off in flights of coloratura and belt out full throated C's and D's. We also get to hear that legendary Sutherland trill several times as well. All in all, a THOROUGHLY enjoyable Marie. Pavarotti, near the beginning of his career, is nothing less than astounding. He turns every musical phrase wonderfully, and gets to show off those formidable top notes of his. By the time he gets through with his 9 high C's, I feel like standing up and applauding. Sinclair handles the role of the blue-blooded Marquise very well. The role of the marquise doesn't go too high, but it does go quite low (to a low E-flat I believe). Malas is very believable as Sulpice, portraying a rough, rugged, "salty" old army captain. Orhcestrally, the recording is flawless (at least in my opinion). Richard Bonynge's conducting, as most always, is beyond reproach. This recording always makes me smile every time I listen to it.
Two Stars in Their Prime.......2006-02-18
This is a classic performance. Sutherland is at the top of her form. A very young Pavarotti shows why he was considerd the world's greatest tenor. A must have.
A Grand Fille Du Regiment Recording And A Must For Sutherland/Pavarotti Fans.......2006-01-27
This studio recording of Donizetti's brilliant French comedy is a must have for any true devotee of Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti. This opera was launched at the Met in the late 70's and early 80's (the time of this recording) and garnered great success to both singers. When Pavarotti sang the swift high C's in the famous Act 1 aria, he became an overnight opera sensation. For Sutherland, the role of Marie would become a signature role and one that best showcased all her vocal talents- high, gleaming upper register, beautiful coloratura scales, rich, creamy middle register and velvety textures. Conductor Richard Bonynge, Sutherland's hubby, conducts at a brisk, lively tempi and brings out the grander aspects of the score. While still a comedy, this opera was written for the Paris Opera, which still favored grand opera. Supporting the terrific tenor and soprano leads are Spiro Malas as a gruff, hilarious Sulpice (he would reprise the role many times, each time with great success mainly because he lived the role) and Monica Sinclair as La Marquesse. While Bonynge makes sure that the music for each singer wraps them in beautiful melody in a grand style made possible by studio recording engineering, I feel that Monica Sinclair's mezzo soprano voice is wholly unsuited for the part of the Marquesse. Why ? When compared to other Marquesses, such as the more lyric account of Rosalind Elias or the more character-driven interpretation by singer Muriel Costa-Greenspoon, hers is a weak, unexciting performance. It lacks wit and comedy, which is absolutely essential to the role of the Marquesse. If you don't know what I mean, I mean that the Marquesse is supposed to be a parody of a bourgeois, social-climbing and social-conscious grand dame of Paris. She's a joke of a woman and should be sung like that, without sacrifice to the beauty of the arias, particularly the first ones in Act 1.
Joan Sutherland has her share of loyal fans and her share of critics and detractors (what opera singer doesn't ?). While I don't think her Marie is the best, she does handle the music with great flair, with great passion and with a beautiful, agile voice. Yes, I'm a fan of Beverly Sills (long considered the antithesis of Sutherland and her rival, though there is no truth to that) and I have heard both Sutherland and Sills sing Marie. Both of them sing this well, each in their own skillful fashion. One has to understand that each have their ups and downs. Beverly Sills sings with a beautiful voice (despite what some would say) but she sacrifices chances for beautiful tone in order to do a Broadway-ish, theatrical Marie, one she even claimed was inspired by Lucille Ball. Joan Sutherland sings the role with more beauty of tone in abundance, but to the death of any real dramatic commitment. And the same goes for Luciano Pavarotti's portrayal of Tonio, who, at any rate, is a lesser star in the opera next to the character of Marie. I enjoy the Beverly Sills version a lot better because it's live and the comedy is better appreciated. Here, the music is more bland and if one did not know it was La Fille one could mistake it for a bel canto opera. But it's still a great performance. I heard it on a broadcast and was enchanted. It's a different animal from the Sills version, but it has its own strengths. Sutherland sings beautifully (even Sills adored Sutherland) and she cannot be surpassed in her great singing abilities. Pavarotti is Pavoratti, a huge, lyric voice that is still hailed as the finest of the 20th century.

Customer Reviews:
These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21
I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.
An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25
This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.
The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18
While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

Fantastic feelings and shivering emotions.......2005-02-20
Eric Coates is perhaps better remembered from his composition of "The Dam Busters", which is a great finalization to this album. In addition to this particular masterpiece the whole recording is full of the loveliest symphonic works from Coates and really provides shivering feelings and fantastic emotions when listening to it. Not only "Cinderella" and "The Selfish Giant" but also the rest of the album is worth enjoying. Exploration to modern classical music brings out fantastic feelings.

Second volume of a highly entertaining series........2000-11-09
Light orchestral works are becoming something of a lost art, but the British have excelled at them -- the form is especially popular during their annual "Proms" concerts -- and this second volume of Hyperion's popular series continues in the same high-quality vein as Volume One. Twenty pieces by some of the best British light music composers on a generously-packed 78 minute CD -- no skimping here!
These aren't meant to be challenging works, but are skillfully orchstrated, excellently played, and well recorded. The variety is tremendous -- you may even recognize a few of the pieces and say to yourself, "so THAT'S where that tune came from!"
Perfect music for easy listening on a lazy Sunday afternoon, or anytime you need a break from the classical music heavyweights. Hyperion's packaging and booklet notes are, as usual for this premium classical label, uniformly excellent.
For more of this refreshing series, check out Volumes One and Three, as well as European Light Music Classics and American Light Music Classics.

Many middlebrow masterworks in the mix.......2002-06-09
Eric Coates' "Calling All Workers" and Edward White's "Puffin' Billy" (used as Captain Kangaroo's theme music!) are the two main reasons to buy this first-rate CD. The former work, from 1940, is an elegantly rousing and structurally flawless march in symmetrical binary form, with the second section making its final appearance in augmentation, the note values doubled for wonderful dramatic effect. Such by-the-book perfection is news when encountered in Mozart or Beethoven, and it should be given its due here. The equally effective "Puffin' Billy" is breezily structured by comparison, with a minimum of thematic material transformed through theme and variation and frequent modulations into a charming and satisfyingly complete train journey. The piece is repetitious as can be, but it doesn't sound that way, and therein lies the miracle of its composition. These two works steal the CD, hands-down.
But there are several close seconds, including the marvelous, Satie-worthy "The Boulevardier," and "The Haunted Ballroom," a piece that evokes the title in a way that is almost spooky. And there's a corny but lovely piece by Albert ("In a Persian Market") Ketelbey called "Bells Across the Meadows." Ketelbey cunningly and cleverly suggests the bells of the title through the subtlest of means--namely, bells sounding in the distance. Across the meadows, almost. But the music works, and that's all that matters.
Fills a need for many music collections ..........2000-11-09
Intelligent, entertaining light orchestra music is something I find fills a great space in my collection. It's perfect for those days you just don't feel up to Mahler or Wagner, but still want some music in your life. This excellent first volume in one of Hyperion's most popular series is a great way to get started.
All of the tunes on this generously-filled CD are written by British masters of light music and played with fizzing energy and a sense of fun by Ronald Corp and his fine orchestra. No piece outstays its welcome and some may be familiar to you -- especially "Puffin' Billy," which was used as the theme for the old Captain Kangaroo children's show! Many are probably very familiar to British listeners, having been used as openers for popular BBC radio and TV shows over the years.
Tuneful and entertaining, this CD is a great find and could become one of your favorites. Give it a chance -- like me, you may find yourself hunting after others in the series: British Light Music Classics 2 and 3, American Light Music Classics, and European Light Music Classics.
British music we don't hear enough of.......2000-11-07
This CD brings a smile to my face. Vanity Fair and the Boulevardier will make you light on your feet. Dusk is another beauty. The CD is full of wonderful, clever music. I'm looking forward to getting CDs 2 and 3. The music may have been around for a while but it is a fresh as ever.

Customer Reviews:
Spectacular Mantovani Music.......2004-09-20
This is one of Vocalion's latest re-issues of two original recordings made by Mantovani and his Orchestra in 1960. It pairs the folk songs of the "American Scene" composed by Stephen Foster and others, along with concert gems, all brilliantly arranged by Mantovani and his collaborator Cecil Milner. Stephen Foster's time-honored music appears to be having a comeback these days and so will the utterly appealing orchestral interpretations given to these chestnuts by the masterful brilliance of the Mantovani sound and the artistry and discipline of his musicians. Some 45 years ago, Mantovani's American Scene LP remained 30 weeks on Billboard's Top 40 List and rose to a high position of number 11. Listeners now, as then, will enjoy the melifluous string-laden arrangements of Beautiful Dreamer, I Dream of Jeannie, My Old Kentucky Home, Grandfather's Clock, and Goodnight Irene, and they will tap to the lively, full orchestra arrangements of Camptown Races, Ring de Banjo, and Turkey in the Straw. Decca's "Concert Spectacular" CD, never issued and rarely heard in the United States, teases the listener with a distinctive waltz time arrangement of the popular Sousa march, Stars and Stripes Forever. Many will shed a tear when they hear the cathedral sound of languorous strings and woodwinds in Danny Boy. This Concert Spectacular offers the listener a plethora of musical imagery. With extraordinary and unique orchestrations, one will feel the fiery excitement of "Granada", sense the clash of thunder and lightning in Strauss's Polka, and march step and "fall" with the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. These two CD's together are truly spectacular, because their tracks are filled with the emotion and energy of the creative and distinctive Mantovani sound. This is "ultimate Mantovani", soothingly wistful moods and evocative melodies that make you want to listen to them with all the attentiveness of a concert goer, a paradigm for all today making light orchestral music of which Mantovani was truly the master.
