organ works by bach.......2007-01-10
excellent. unforgettable works by one of the masters, the grand organs have their own place in time mostly heard in church surroundings. this brings it home.cigar, brandy, toccata and fugue d minor, heaven.
Hurford plays very musically.......2006-11-24
Peter Hurford is a wonderul musician.. his interpretations of this music are musical.. (esp. with the St. Anne Fugue where each of the three variations are connected with beatiful transitions..)
A wonderful recording.. in an era where everything has to be perfect,
it's nice to hear an artist take some risk and give us their own
personal, unique, and original interpretations.
Disappointing.......2006-07-27
When you buy a CD like this, the one thing you expect of the artist is to nail the intro to Toccata and Fugue In D Minor, Bach's great masterwork and the lead piece on the CD. Unfortunately, the organist plays the intro robotically, truncating notes and overextending pauses. He rushes some passages so badly in the intro that one cannot distinguish the melodic line. Toccata and Fugue In D Minor is so musically advanced that it sounds modern even today, but you miss that with this recording.
This album belongs amongst the first four or five in every Bach collection........2006-07-27
What to say about these extraordinary works?
First of all, that this is a double-album full of titanic masterworks, intelligently and skillfully performed. These discs belong amongst the first four or five albums in every Bach collection. The famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor is here, together with another, lesser-known but equally awe-inspiring "Dorian" Toccata and Fugue in D minor. There are quite a few other familiar war-horses---the Prelude and Fugue in A minor, the St. Anne Prelude and Fugue, and the Tocatta, Adagio, and Fugue in C (which I first encountered in a piano transcription performed by Evgeny Kissin, on his album with the Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition... well worth hearing next to the original organ writing here), among others---and some more obscure pieces as well to keep us out of "greatest hits" territory (almost always a drawback in recital albums). Like the Mozart piano concerti and the Beethoven symphonies, Bach's compositions for organ are amongst the towering summits of Western music; there is nothing else like them.
Since I'm playing critic here, I suppose I ought to offer at least a bit of actual criticism, rather than only effusive praise. While many would beg to differ, three composers (whose careers, interestingly, were almost exactly chronologically contiguous) are, by a long-standing historical consensus, recognized to occupy the highest tier of artistic achievement in "common practice," tonal music: Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Of those three masters, Mozart alone is recognized as having achieved a perfect or near-perfect balance between subject and object, style and substance: Bach tipped the balance just a bit in favor of objectivity and substance, and Beethoven in favor of subjectivity and style. And so, just as I find that Beethoven's music does not hold up quite as well as Mozart's to repeated listenings because his stylistic and emotive devices are less effective once you've heard them before, so that they no longer take you by surprise, so too do I find that Bach's music, especially in the long contrapuntal sections, is not always as worthwhile for listening as it is for theoretical analysis... it is perhaps not quite as valuable in practice as it is in theory, in other words. The organ pieces on these discs are sublime masterpieces, but if they do fall short of absolute perfection it is for being somewhat dry and academic.
In addition, the different organs Herford plays here so often produce, as good organs will, such a staggering, chest-rumbling roar that you have trouble discerning the pitches in these compositions. It's a similar problem to listening to harpsichord music, where at times you hear just a lot of clanging and can't tell what note or chord is being played. It's not a big problem on these recordings, but it is a little distracting at times.
Nevertheless, it's said that what makes a work of art a masterpiece is not its being perfect or flawless, but rather that its virtues are so meaningful and effective that they compensate for the piece's flaws and imperfections. In fact, in sublime pieces such as these, it's precisely that imbalance, or aesthetic asymmetry, you might say, that makes the music dynamic and exciting: it creates an inner tension, a sort of yearning or striving that, in the hands of the greatest of masters (of which Bach is uncontestably one), makes for a transcendent artistic statement and an invaluable testament to the human experience.
In short, buy this album and listen to it often!
Never a dull moment in this Bach recording............2006-05-29
Peter Hurford is perhaps one of the foremost organists of his time. He has not only studied music but law as well, giving a scholarly twist on his education. I have always been pleased by his interpretations of Bach. They are no-nonsense, with strict tempos, clean, accurate passages, and registrations which are very lush and vibrant. For the new fan of Bach, there is no better place to start, as this set contains all of the "big" organ pieces for which Bach became legendary, as well as a few well-known chorale preludes. For those who wish to explore Bach's organ contributions in more detail, buy Hurford's complete Bach recordings (Although I believe it is out of print or very hard to obtain, as I have not yet found one). If this is the case, buy Marie-Claire Alain's version on Erato. No two organists understand Bach better.

Superb match of music, artist, and instrument.......2006-02-24
On March 2, 1972, a spacecraft called Pioneer 10 was launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. On the grounds that the craft might at some point, at some time, come under the notice of intelligent beings on another world, a plaque was attached to the craft, etched with some figures and whatnot. The figures were designed to "represent the type of creature that created Pioneer." It struck me at the time that if we wanted to tell others not only what type of creature we are, but what we are supremely capable of, that we should include a recording of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, and, more specifically, this recording of that marvelous expression of the human mind and spirit.
E. Power Biggs was known not only for his mastery of the pipe organ, but also for his careful matching of a particular composition to an organ best suited to its performance. We can hope that Sony will at some point release a CD of Biggs' performance of the Toccata from Widor's fifth organ symphony on the organ of the Episcopal Church of St. George in New York City with its 32 -foot ranks. The thundering pedal notes in the concluding part of the work have never had better justice done to them.
All the tracks on this CD were recorded on the Flentrop organ in the Busch-Reisinger Museum at Harvard University, from about 1961 to 1972. Again, Biggs seems to have chosen his instrument wisely, as the pieces he plays here feel so absolutely right on that organ. Yes, there is some tape hiss, and I think I detected a little bit of tape "wow" at one point. But if you will listen beyond those things, concentrate on the music in itself, I think you cannot fail to be both impressed and moved, even if you have heard the pieces played by many other artists in many other venues. Technique and artistry alike are both superb and unique in this recording of these monuments of Bach's genius.
Highly recommended.
Beautiful, commanding; dynamite recording quality.......2005-10-28
This CD is a 2002 re-issue of the Sony Essentials CD from 1991. That disc is also still available from Amazon. Just type in "E. Power Biggs" on the search line to make sure you get to the appropriate page. Several customer reviews are available there. You will see it listed as "Bach: Toccata & Fugue; Passacaglia & Fugue; Pastorale; Prelude & Fugue". I can really only add my voice to the other reviewers, some of whom are far more eloquent than I. Suffice it to say that E.Power Biggs is the best. The famous Toccata & Fugue in D Minor is so perfectly performed here by Mr. Biggs. Of course, all the other compositions are equally well-performed. These recordings date from 1961, 1965, and 1972, according to the last page of the liner notes. There is some tape hiss present; however, it only appears during very quiet passages, and there are precious few of those, so I don't really consider it a problem. Take my word that the recordings on this disc are absolutely excellent. I have some vinyl discs from Columbia Masterworks featuring Mr. Biggs, and this disc reminds me of those top-quality recordings. It may be that these CD recordings come from original Columbia Masterworks as well. What matters in the end here is twofold: the works of Bach and the performances of Mr. Biggs. I would also suggest that anyone who wants to pursue E. Power Biggs' recordings of Bach to browse through his other recordings here on Amazon in order to complete their collection. In the meantime, I can guarantee that this disc at this low price is one wonderful buy.

The "Other" Works Stand Out.......2001-09-11
This CD has many wonderful organ pieces. In fact, _every_ piece is an ocean of musical genius. And though I agree with the preceding reviewer--viz., that the recording is wanting in a few respects--I find the organ's recorded tonality to be "good," overall. However, for someone who has never heard a lot of the organ, the first few listenings may be trying. (Most people, in my experience, find that a little organ goes a long way; a CD spotlighting the organ may be a too much of a singular thing for those people.) And for those who simply do not care for the organ (descriptions such as "funeral music" come to mind), you will probably not find any new fascination with the instrument on this CD.
But this CD does offer a dynamic range of Bach's organ music: "Nun Komme Der Heiden Heiland" is especially sober (as they are between "the" Toccata and Fugue and Bach's Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, the solemnity of both chorales is compounded), while Bach's concerto after Vivaldi is especially lively; and a careful listen to Bach's fugues is always a rewarding endeavor. Lionel Rogg interprets certain pieces in a manner with which I do not always agree (i.e., the toccatas); but the slight variations from orthodoxy have merit, for the listener may hear Bach's music in a new--and possibly enlightening--way.
Good budget disc.......2000-12-31
Decent performance at a very low price. Bass quantity and performance isn't quite like my Verany and Telarc discs, but still enjoyable. I'm impressed with the diversity, a couple of chorales, fugues, and a Bach/Vivaldi concerto. However, I'd skip this one if price isn't a consideration and get a higher quality disc with similar selections.

Customer Reviews:
great STEREO recording.......2007-07-09
A previous review describes this set as "recorded in 1947 in mono." Just in case both Deutsche Grammophon and my ears were deceiving me, I listened to it with headphones to ascertain that indeed, it is recorded in stereo--even the oldest track, which is dated 1956 by the CD notes.
It's recorded in pretty good stereo, at that--really outstanding considering its age (mostly '60s and '70s). Not that it's on a par with audiophile CDs of recent years, but it sounds clean and clear. There are somewhat strong treble overtones from the Alkmaar organ (not so much from the Strasbourg organ that fills CD #2), but not to the point of annoying me. You definitely catch the nuances of the organs' differences, as well as the shuffling sounds of the action (in quiet passages).
Walcha's playing contributes as much to the clarity of these disks as the engineers did. It's as lucid as you can ask for without getting mechanical about it.
Maybe when I've heard these disks many times I will develop the sort of mystical attachment to them that others have expressed. For now, though, they represent excellent straightforward Bach, nothing more, nothing less. Walcha is not as flamboyant as Biggs or Fox; pedal notes don't shake the house and the melody line is not always at maximum perkiness. But there's nothing boring about this set. On the contrary, there is not only an adequate amount of fire, but also depth and great cohesion in Walcha's playing, never empty note-spinning or passages that seem out of place with the whole. It seems obvious as I listen that not one, but two powerful musical minds are at work.
Helmut Walcha Plays Bach.......2005-04-07
This review is dedicated to the memory of fellow Amazon-reviewer and my friend, Bob Zeidler. Bob was perhaps best-known for his love for and knowledge of the music of Charles Ives. But Bob also loved the pipe organ, as his many CD and book reviews on subjects related to the organ will attest. Bob loved the good and inspiring in music. We are fortunate that he shared his love and knowledge so generously and enthusiastically with the Amazon community. Robin Friedman
For the past 28 years, the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. has presented a free five-hour Bach Organ Marathon early in March to celebrate J.S. Bach's birthday of March 21. Leading organists from the D.C. area together with lovers of the organ come together to hear the icy and improvisatory glory of Bach's organ music. I was fortunate to attend the Bach Marathon on March 6 of this year, and to have access to many other recitals of organ music in the Washington D.C. area. The Bach Marathon this past March inspired me to revisit an anthology of some of Bach's most famous compositions for the organ in this two-volume CD by Helmut Walcha.
Helmut Walcha (1907-1991) once said: "Bach opens a vista to the universe. After experiencing him, people feel there is meaning to life after all." Walcha's love for and mastery of Bach's organ works resonates through this compilation. Walcha lost his sight at the age of sixteen and learned Bach's entire and immense body of work for the organ, together with much other music, by memory through hearing the various lines played separately on the piano. Walcha spent 15 years memorizing the works of Bach, from age 25 through age 40.
The works on this set are compiled from a much larger collection of Bach's organ music that Walcha recorded in the 1950s and 1960s available in a larger box set on DG. The works on the first CD were recorded on the Great Organ in the Saint-Laurens Church, Alkmaar, the Netherlands while the works on the second CD were recorded on the organ of the Saint-Pierre le-Jeune Church, Strasbourg, France. The later organ, to me, has a softer, reedier tone.
The compilation opens with Bach's most famous organ composition, the early Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565. It includes an additional three toccatas and fugues, a fantasy and fugue, several separate preludes and fugues, a trio sonata, the Passaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582, a set of variations on the hymn "Vom Himmel hoch" BWV 769, and six of the so "Schubler Chorales" including the well-known setting of "Wachtet auf". Thus the CD presents an excellent cross-section of the many types of works and musical forms Bach used in composing for the organ.
Walcha plays a large, muscular, and angular Bach. This is steely and disciplined music, elevated and uplifiting. It is music to be returned to again and again. I particularly enjoyed the Passaglia and Fugue, BWV 582, the Schubler chorales, the G major Fantasia, BWV 572, and the variations, BWV 769. But this entire compilation is masterful.
There are many music-lovers with great knowledge of the music repertory, including knowledge of Bach, who have little knowledge of the organ. Perhaps this is because in order to get to hear this music live, listeners need to make an effort to attend rare recitals in churches rather than in the more familiar musical venues of the secular concert or recital hall. But this music is glorious. This two volume compilation by Walcha's is the best way for the music-lover to get a basic familiarity with the grandeur of Bach's compositions for the pipe organ.
bad registrations.......2004-07-04
The sound seems heavily slanted towards the treble and Walcha chooses the most ear-aching high pitched pipes. This may not bother some listeners but it literally makes my stomach uneasy.
Great mono recording.......2004-05-12
This is an interesting collection. It was recorded in 1947 in mono, and though popular, was completely outsold by his later recordings in stereo. He is known as a great interpreter, as he was one of the most prominent to speak of going back to Bach's intended interpretations. But now that the early music movement has grown and so many have studied and made recordings, these, although exquisitely performed, now sound very 1950s in their perspective! Although I have several organists in my collection, he's the only one i had a complete Bach set of until I read the review below that recommends Michel Chapuis. Well, all I can say is -- i'm listening to Chapuis now! it's much more sensitive and I find it easier to hear the different ideas without having to read the music. Everyone acknowledges that Walcha is a great organist and musician, but his ideas (which were a great start back in the 50's) are definitely in the manner of the 20th century rather than the current early music movement. [so thanks to the reviewer below from Boston!]
THIS is the Bach to Get.......2003-06-10
Walcha is the only organist I have ever heard who comes any where near tapping the immensity of Bach's genius, most evident in the organworks. Some of these renderings I have listened to for literally days on end without fatigue.
Walcha's performances are rid of the "fluff" and so-called scholarly-interpretative rigga-morole that infests most others'. I shudder to think that those who dismiss Walcha's exemplary efforts as "out-dated" (like our punitive Ph.D) would also have us believe that the discordant, atonal wreckage being palmed off as modern composition is also "music," something most of us simply endure to warrant the price of our concert tickets, yet never remember or make the least effort to purchase a recording of.
Bach, through Walcha, reminds us that Order and Discipline, born from Divine Inspiration--not arbitrariness and scholarly license, constructed by human pride--beget Art and Beauty. And it is Art and Beauty which endure, not up-to-dateness and needless innovation.

Beautiful Sound.......2006-08-04
This is one of my favorite organ recordings. A beautiful sounding organ fully captured on CD. What a great choice Murray made to end the disk with those four short choral preludes. They don't appear on any other recordings I have, but they are great. I would buy the CD just for those.
The Best sounding pipe organ, recording.......2000-01-24
This recording is superb. The clarity presented on Telarc Digital recording only adds to the beuty of the organ. The 32' pedals are heard loud and clear, making this CD as lifelike as possible. Michael Murray is outstanding organist and performs these selections wonderfully.

Old Friends, Rejuvenated.......2007-04-02
I have known these recordings since they were first issued on LP in the 1960's, and I am more than delighted that they have been reissued on CDs with even cleaner and fuller sonics. I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviews that have thus far appeared here on Amazon and can add only one or two additional comments:
Karl Richter's Bach performances, although they represented a departure from the over-romanticized treatments of Baroque music that had prevailed up to his time, were not the kind of trailblazing return-to-authenticity projects of Trevor Pinnock, Christopher Hogwood, and others, whose early-music-performance practices continue to be the standard today. Thus, in the matter of tempos, Richter may sound a little slow to some modern ears; however, he generally goes at a faster clip than his contemporary, E. Power Biggs, and his predecessor Albert Schweitzer, but not as fast as Anthony Newman and others who have followed in more recent years. His tempos and style are perfect for my taste, however: almost sassy compared with Biggs, yet much more tasteful than Fox (not that I am immune to enjoying the latter's excesses), and less frenetic than Newman.
The recording quality is excellent and works in concert with some nicely pungent reeds in the organ to produce results of sparkling clarity.
As a side note, I found it interesting that two of the three CDs contain over 81 minutes of music; I had thought 80 was the absolute limit (other than for MP3 discs).
Music for a Winter's Day.......2007-02-27
Between 1964 and 1980 Karl Richter (1926 --1981) made extensive recordings of Bach's organ music. These recordings have recently been reissued by Deutsche Grammophon in a 3-CD set as part of its "Legendary Recordings" series. This set is a joy for those who love the organ. It includes four hours of Bach's greatest music for the instrument, beautifully played. It was the ideal companion for me during this past snow and icebound weekend in Washington D.C.
Richter, of course, was best-known as a conductor of early music, but this set also shows him as a master of the organ. He made most of these recordings between 1964 and 1969 performing on a modern organ at the Jaegersborg Church near Copenhagen. The final three works in the collection date from 1978 and were recorded on a historic Silbermann organ at the Freiburg Cathedral. This instrument has a warmer sound than the modern instrument at Jaegersborg Church.
This set captures Bach's organ music in all its variety, including its icy grandeur and its moments of meditative reflection. Bach's organ music is learned, inspiring, and emotional. Written for church performances, it reaches towards the transcendent, regardless of the listener's creed. The set includes a cross-section of the major works and styles in Bach's output for the instrument. For most listeners, some selections will be familiar while, for all but those listeners with broad familiarity with Bach's organ works, some will be new.
The set opens with an arresting performance of the familiar Toccata and Fugue in d-minor, BWV 565 which some scholars do not attribute to Bach. The other work in this collection with widespread recognition, is the Schubler chorale arrangement of "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme," which Ricther takes in a meditative, slow tempo. Richter also performs several additional preludes including: "Kommst du nun, Jesus, von Himmel herunter", BWV 650 and a later prelude from a set of 18, "Schmucke dich, o liebe Seele", BWV 654, which also receives a deeply introspective interpretation. Of the final works Richter recorded, two are late chorales, "O Gott, dur frommer Gott", BWV 767 and "Sei gregusset, Jesu guting", BWV 768.
The flowing c minor Passacaglia and Fugue, BWV 582 was one of the highlights of this CD. This is passionate, lyrical and seeking music with an opening movement written in the same style as Pachbel's familiar Canon. The large-scaled Toccata and Fugue in F major, BWV receives a compelling performance, as does the G minor Fantasie and Fugue, BWV 552. Other two-movement works include the prelude and Fugues in D major, BWV 532, a-minor, BWV 543, E flat major, BWV 552, e minor, BWV 548 and B minor, BWV 544.
In addition to these grand works, the set also includes three of Bach's trio sonatas for organ, BWV 525, 526, and 529. These works are each in three movements with fast outer movements surrounding a reflective slow movement. These works tend to be less austure than Bach's other compositions for the organ and suggest, in places, the galant, graceful style of musical composition that would soon replace Bach's baroque.
Richter plays this music with discipline and romantic feeling. He makes full and effective use of the tonal qualities of his instruments, and his playing is beautifully recorded. The liner notes, unfortunately, are sparse and not particularly informative. I am grateful for a winter weekend which left me housebound to draw inspiration from this glorious music. Lovers of Bach's organ music will want to return many times to Richter's performances.

THE BEST OF BACH + THE BEST OF KARL RICHTER.......2005-08-15
Here we have the best organ works of J S BACH played by the well
known director KARL RICHTER.
He includes one Prelude and FUgue on each key form the original
ones written for organ. So we can say we have here a Well Tempered
Organ by JS BACH.
I recommed it to all that want to listen the best of his organ
works without having to buy a complete set.As I said there are
Preludes and Fugues in all keys from c to b,Trio Sonatas,Choral
Preludes from Orgelbuechlein,Schuebler and the Leipzig 18 sets,
Choral Variations or Partitas and free pieces like the Canzona.
The negative here is the booklet for different reasons:
Mistakes on the organ building dates.
No list of stops (ALL the original LPs included the list of stops
on the back cover).
The order of tracks in the cd is a complete non sense:instead of
following the order of the originals LPs,or the order of the
original taping during several years (the LPs were not recorded
at the same time)the tracks come with an unexplained order, they
not even watch for a combination:like including something between
the trio sonatas, they put one after the other.
The booklet indicates at the end pictures of the artist by Werner
Neumeister, and there are no pictures at all in the booklet.
It does not have any notes on the compositions included.
Now we know that the DGG company has made other CDs with Richter
including very complete booklets like that Passions, etc that have
70 or 80 pages, why then come with a set of cd with such a booklet
Karl Richter made several trips from his Munich area to Denmark
for these recordings trying to give a unified sample of J S Bach
organ works.Just think that there are plenty of other organs in
Germany to play and record, but he made as I said several trips to
Copenhagen area to record these masterpieces of the organ.
My favorite one is the Prelude and Fugue in e minor called the
Wedge. The reason is the constant changing colors in the prelude
and the virtuosity of the fuge, with its own colors making this
piece a unique color masterpiece. Here Richter goes over all using
a small instrument. All interested in the list of stops, can visit
the organ builder website:Marcussen and look for the Jaegesborg
organ, and will understand the reason why Karl Richter traveled
overseas for several years, to sample the best organ works JSBach
ever composed for the organ.
I strongly recommed these CDs as the BEST OF BACH BY KARL RICHTER

A Mockery of Bach.......2006-02-18
Fox makes a mockery of Bach's great organ works. Fox should confine his playing to calliope at a carnival. Fox's flamboyance in playing and in his choice of organ stops disrespects Bach's work and genius.
Good introduction to Bach organ tunes.......2003-12-25
This CD is probably a good introduction to school children on some popular organ works by Bach. The first work "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" will be immediately familiar to anyone who has ever gone to a haunted house. "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" is another familiar tune and done quite prettily. "Now Thank We All Our God" is churchy. The rest of the CD tracks 4-8 seem too sleepy for me. The last one is "Sleepers, Wake!", at least he tried, ha ha.
Caveat Emptor.......2003-12-14
Virgil Fox (1912-1980) was, with E. Power Biggs, one of the best known organists of the 1950s and 1960s. But any resemblance to Biggs, Biggs' preferences in organs and music, and Biggs' style of playing, ends there; two organists could hardly have been less alike. For many Fox became a byword for razzle-dazzle, crowd-pleasing organ showmanship that was long on virtuosity and short on taste. The Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music says of him: "As organist at Riverside Church in New York, 1946-65, he became a tourist attraction. During the late 1960s his penchant for flamboyant showmanship and oratory enabled him to reach out to a new generation, touring with an electronic organ and a psychedelic light show." I regret to say that this description fits my mental image of Fox as the vulgar and garish "Mr. Showbiz" of the organ and self-styled proponent of "heavy organ," a kind of flashy Las Vegas type touring with his electronic organ and psychedelic light show. Ugh! But that image is probably unjust, certainly incomplete. He had legions of fans, and in his own way he was a proselytizer and got many people interested in the organ who otherwise might not have been. Those who admired him found him a colorful, unconventional, creative player who made interesting, offbeat choices in registrations and interpretive decisions.
As Bach programs go this is a pretty hackneyed one, limited to standard chestnuts ("Bach's Greatest Hits"), but at least it's all Bach, instead of the treacly stuff Fox sometimes liked to play and record. This CD has the advantage of being a budget-priced cheapie, but the offsetting disadvantage of being only 40:23 long. As you might expect of a cheapie CD like this one, there are no notes (no information about Fox, the music, or the organs, other than simply identifying them) and no information about recording dates. The issue date of the CD looks like 1988; the CD itself bears a copyright date of 1974; this just may be about the date of the recordings, which are identified as analog. I suppose we should be grateful that RCA took the trouble to identify the organs Fox was playing. The first two selections (the most substantial ones) were recorded on the Royal Albert Hall organ, London; all the rest on the Riverside Church organ, NYC, which for so long was home base for Fox. Both are enormous organs. I am an organ buff and a Bach buff, and must admit that I am not fond of Bach played on enormous organs like these. Biggs and others have demonstrated long since that Bach goes better on smaller organs (in smaller spaces) that emphasize clarity and articulation than on huge instruments (in huge spaces) that emphasize grandeur, power, volume of sound, reverberation. I don't care much for the sound of either of these two huge organs, at least as we hear them here, and by today's standards neither would recommend itself as a good choice for Bach.
So how does the CD stack up? The engineering is not bad at all, really quite listenable: highs are not the smoothest or sweetest in town; bass is surprisingly full and deep. The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, that ubiquitous warhorse, gets a performance that is very free, with heavy, exaggerated contrasts in dynamics (Fox goes in for some echo effects) and tempo (a good deal of arbitrary taffy-pulling of tempos, it seems to me). It certainly is "different" and doubtless will make purists cringe, but it's entertaining (you wonder what he's going to pull out of his bag of tricks next) and on its own terms I suppose it's effective. Dull it ain't. The "Little" Fugue is heavily but impressively done. I found it the best performance on the CD.
After the first two pieces, my interest in this recital flagged rapidly. Some of the remaining slighter fare ("favorite Bach tunes") are played with registrations that to my ears are too "churchy" sounding, and some of them made me feel like I'd stepped into the undertaker's chapel.
Overall I found this to be "heavy organ" indeed--ponderous, bloated, outdated Bach, historically uninformed and with good taste in short supply. (Alas, I fear I'm never going to make a Virgil Fox fan.) This CD is best recommended to admirers of this organist. If you are looking for a good introduction to Bach, or a recommendable sampling of his best organ works, I'm afraid this isn't it. (Try E. Power Biggs, Peter Hurford, Michael Murray, Marie-Claire Alain, Christopher Herrick.)
This cd kills me........2003-06-13
Yeah, it's pretty music, but its so inaccurately interpretted, it hurts my ears. The colors he chooses for T&F and for the G-minor are somewhat acceptable, but oh man, what kind of articulation esp. on the little fugue? And then on the slow movements like the Ariso and Air on the G-string, I thought I was at Fenway Park or something. Baroque music has a very distinct style, and though Mr. Fox hits all the right notes and plays with expression, it is not Bach! A previous reviewer said it was the most fresh version of Toccata and Fugue in D-minor. That is actually one of the few Bach pieces that has room for using different colors, and most recordings I've heard interpret it the right way. (actually Bach probably didn't even write most it anyway, though it was acredited to him). Bach is probably rolling over in his grave now because of this cd, as are all 9000 of his children. The reason the organ is exciting is because it can sound different, depending on the kind of music you are playing...playing Bach is its own style, one different from Buxtehude, Couperin, Mendelssohn, Franck, or what have you; one which scholars have spent years studying and perfecting, and here is a motion that destroys everyone's hard work for all those years. You don't have to make up your own way of playing standard repetoire to create an illusion; just play a more varied program so that you can say "yeah, this is bach, and then this stuff is still great, but not Bach." Sorry if I sound overly conservative, but if you want to play like he does, save it for more contemporary music...Bach is Bach, he is the master, and you play bach like you are supposed to, not like this.
Good performace, no documentation........2003-04-11
Virgil Fox was certainly one of the great organists of his century! This performance is a good example Virgil's mega-organ approach to Bach (and everything else). It greatly contrasts with the "historically informed" instruments and performances we are used to today.
One complaint is that the cd includes no documentation aside from the list of tracks. There is no organ description or stoplist (although a quick search on google will yield this). There is no essay on the performance or biographical information about the organist. The photo on the front cover doesn't relate to the recording in any way. Certainly, this recording could have been more thoughtfully prepared.
Then again, you can beat the price.

You get the Phantom of the Opera Toccata and Fugue in D minor, the Passacaglia and Fugue, the St. Anne Prelude and Fugue, the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue, and if that's not enough, two lovely chorale preludes. Wolfgang Rubsam has previously recorded all of this music for Philips, and his Bach pedigree is second to none. As a sample of his ongoing complete edition, or as a stand-alone introduction to the greatest organ music in the history of mankind, this disc fits the bill perfectly. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction to the works of JS Bach.......2006-09-03
Around 1995, I was introduced to the Naxos label. Being an organist as well as a fan of organ music, I snapped up the CDs of Wolfgang Ruebsam. At the then low price of $5.99, it looked like a bargain.
I quickly regretted my purchase then, though I do not now. At the time, I thoroughly detested all of Mr Ruebsam's tempo fluctuations. However, I've started to listen to his performances again and found that I really do like them. Getting past his use of rubato may be hard for some listeners, but Mr Ruebsam is a brilliant interpreter worth spending some time with. His registrations are brilliant without being unduly harsh. Some recordings of Baroque organ music emphasise high, piercing, mutations so much that it is quite annoying and sometimes quite unnerving. The recorded sound is excellent. Ruebsam's performance of the Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue is brilliant. His performance of the Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor is deeply moving.
As I mentioned before, some listeners may find Mr Ruebsam's tempo fluctuations really annoying. But if one gets past all that, one is exposed to one of the truly great artists of our time. His interpretations are thoughtful and well executed. Wolfgang Ruebsam's Bach is worth spending time with. This is an excellent introduction to his cycle.
Excellent recording for the price.......2000-06-15
I'm not a huge fan of solo organ, but after hearing Ich Ruf' Zu Dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 639 I knew I would have to own a recording of it. It's my favorite track on the cd, although all of them are good. The sound of the recording is clear without much annoying resonnance. The playing is good (I don't own any other solo organ pieces to compare it to, however.) The only thing I don't care for is the "St Anne" Prelude and Fugue which I find unusually boring for a J.S. Bach piece.

Customer Reviews:
Bach for professional listeners.......2006-01-30
What I found amazing about this boxset is the opportunity to enjoy Bach in complete form. From my point of view Passacaglia performed by Werner Jacob is a five star performance. Also BWV 593 and BWV 596 push up and show up no limits for the listener. This 16 CDs aggregate the perfect union between the artist, instrument, listener and Bach. And at the end of the day I can say that organ works can still be ... trendy. Enjoy!
Bach Organ Works on original organs.......2004-10-24
121 organ tracks or works on 16 CDs has to be spaced out in about six days. The music is so restful I found myself dowsing. The price for a new set through Amazon was right. Bach organ hymns made Luther.
