A curiously compelling genre-bending creation.......2004-01-05
Differenz/Wiederholung 2 is an intriguing mix of styles and musical means, in its full form allied to a video installation on a three-way split screen. (It is perhaps unfortunate that Kairos has not released a DVD version of the work.) Scored for three vocalists (one classical soprano, one traditional Kurdish singer, one rapper) and an electronically enhanced ensemble of oboe, clarinet, sax, electric guitar, electric violin, two amplified cellos, amplified string bass, two keyboards and two percussionists, it mixes avant-garde classical styles with avant-garde jazz (the composer studied both) and even hints of funk and hip-hop. The work is in seven movements (an eighth track is appended on this recording, though it seems to be a remix--the pretentious inlay note does not shed further light), most of which involve hard-edged, tense music, often with irregularly repeated short figurations. (Some might compare the music to that of Heiner Goebbels, though Lang's soundworld is considerably more aggressive.) Two of the movements break from the main pattern--the striking fourth, entitled Image/Idea (harmonia differentia minima), is a slowly shifting minimalist electronic interlude while the sixth, Need, dispenses with much of the surface activity, explosing the near-static harmonic language underlying much of the music.
This work is certainly an oddity, and would almost certainly work better if the listener could see the video. Nonetheless, it is strangely compelling, and even though I would not wish to listen to this disc very often, I feel the composer is a distinctive and potentially important voice in the European new music scene.
