Fabulous music performed by fabulous musicians. Mozart is one of my favorite composers. His music is genius. And Murray Perahia and Radu Lupu are two of the greatest pianists of our time.

The Full Keyboard - More Mozart and Schubert!.......2006-07-14

The credentials of both of the two soloists here - Murray Perahia and Radu Lupu - are impeccable as individual interpreters of the works of both Mozart and Schubert and so it should come as no surprise that as they sit at the same keyboard the result is nothing less than satisfying.

For this listener the highlight of this recording is the splendid composition by Schubert - the 'Fantasia for piano, 4 hands in F minor', D. 94. The work contains some of his most haunting melodies in his oeuvre and Perahia and Lupu find that degree of harmony that makes the piece truly sing.

The Mozart works (Sonata for 2 Pianos in D Major, K 375), the Fantasia for mechanical organ in F minor, K. 608 and Variations on an original theme for piano, 4 hands in G major, K. 501) are of interest not only because they are rarely heard, but also because of the intelligent music making Perahia and Lupu bring to their interpretations. Without a score in hand it is difficult to know which exposed parts are being played by which soloist and that is as it should be. The two pianists mirror each other and respect the performances in a way that is a welcome unified sound.

Works for extended piano keyboard, whether that be on the same keyboard or on two pianos, are too infrequently performed for obvious reasons. But here we have two of our finest pianists on a CD that is available at the press of a button. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, July 06

A superb collaboration of two great pianists recently remastered for better sound quality. Masterful music but perhaps a divergent coupling. This performance was given high marks by major reviewers (Gramophone). See original CD issue for more reviews on Amazon.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Cliburn Competition medallist Olga Kern plays Rachmaninov as if he wrote this music just for her. She's a virtuoso in the grand tradition, playing with a huge tone and brilliant fingerwork, captured with life-like realism by the engineers. The big work here is the Corelli Variations, a fiendishly difficult set of twenty variations on a Baroque sarabande, La Folia. The composer wrote it to wow his audiences, but it's also serious, full of with dark-toned poetry, serene lyricism, and a huge climax that ends in a poignant coda. Kern plays it with tremendous power and fleet agility. The rest of the disc consists of Rachmaninov's transcriptions of his own and other composers' music, ranging from romanticized Bach to an opulent rewrite of Schubert's Wohin? to his elaborate cadenza for Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. Kern plays the Liszt with plenty of dash, evoking its gypsy flavor and exploiting its opportunities for virtuosity. Here's one competition winner who seems destined for stardom. -- Dan Davis

Olga Kern, the young Russian pianist and Van Cliburn gold medal winner (2001), offers a wide-ranging selection of Rachmaninoff transcriptions, starting with J.S. Bach's superb Suite from the Partita in E major for violin. Many of these are favorites that the public has loved for decades: Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee, Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 with a cadenza by Sergei himself; plus lyrical and demanding arrangements from Bizet, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky. For this listener, the supreme moments are Olga's performance of Rachmaninoff's Variations on a Theme of Corelli, which have been recorded by many virtuosos. It was like hearing them for the first time--fresh, dynamic and radiantly powerful! If you are tired of reading wimpy movie, book and music reviews that leave you wondering whether to bite, here's one vote: say yes!

Olga is a Pianist among Pianists.......2006-11-03

I was privileged to hear Olga perform at Zankell Hall at her Carnegie Hall debut several years ago. Her performances have a very rich individual flare, exactness and confidence. I was not disappointed with her then and I was not disappointed with this cd, Corelli Variations. On this cd, Olga's performances exude something definitely masculine. Though this may not appeal to everyone, it is simply a matter of every pianist having his individual style, feel and texture, if you will. Her playing is warm and vivacious at the same time, and what she says, she says beautifully. The programme is also quite captivating, especially the Bach transcriptions. Thank you Ms Kern!

I was lucky enough to receive an autographed copy of this cd from my brother for christmas, who went to see Olga live, and it definitely made my favorite X-mas gift list. This cd has excellent selections, Olga is a veritable phenomonon, her interpretation and control of the piano is superb, if you love excellently performed classical piano music, use harpoons, tranquilizer darts, or anything else you may need to get this cd. Even if it isn't (sigh) autrographed...

Firstly i must say Im not very much fond of a solo piano but the first time i heard Olga Kern's Corelli Variations I immediately went to order this magnificent CD. Olga plays with maturity, virtoussity as if the music was written for her. I usually prefer the piano accompanied by a a violin or cello but this time around I was taken by surprise. Worthwhile, especially if you like Brahms.......2000-02-28

Johannes Brahms was one of the key figures in Romantic Piano Music. His output for the instrument was varied and large, and this four-disc set is ample testament to that output. As it was with their complete Beethoven Sonatas set (by Bernard Roberts), so it it here: Nimbus have enlisted a fine artist with a good command of the piano to record all of Brahms' solo piano music, and whilst I am not a Brahms addict myself, I am sure it will give great pleasure to collectors and serious Brahms fans.

I could offer a critique of all the works on these discs, but it is enough to single out a particular highlight. Martin Jones is particularly stunning with his rendition of the Hungarian Dances (which in their piano solo versions are not easy at all). The recording quality throughout is superb, enhancing the subtleties of Jones' performance.

All in all this is a worthwhile purchase. If anything, it is perfect for discovering Brahms in perhaps his most 'comfortable' genre. I should say that I came across this recording in the course of studying Romantic Piano Music for A-levels, and for that purpose it was invaluable.

I am so glad that I got this CD. I also have other artists' versions of Schubert, but this one is much more intense. I would recommend this to everyone.

Treasures, most rarely heard, for piano four hands.......2003-01-22

Four-hand piano music in Schubert's time was primarily Hausmusik - music for two amateur pianists to play for their own amusement. But only one of the pieces - the Variations in B flat, D. 968A - really falls into that category. All the other pieces are big and serious, and one of them, the Fantasie in F minor, D. 940, is an acknowledged masterpiece of the piano literature.

The earliest piece, the aforementioned Variations, is light-hearted, not too difficult, and played in sparkling fashion here by Gulda and Hinterhuber. Rico Gulda, by the way, is the youngest child of famous Viennese pianist, Friedrich Gulda. He has also made a fine recording of Schumann's 'Album für die Jugend' for Naxos.

The Rondo in A major, D. 951 and the Duo in A minor 'Lebensstürme' ('Life's Storms') are actually two movements of a never-finished grand sonata for piano four hands, also written in Schubert's final year. The Duo is a huge and complex sonata-form first movement and the Rondo is the intended final movement of the sonata. They were published separately and indeed are here played in reverse of their intended order. The duo-pianists do a fine job of pointing up both the drama and form of the Duo and the lyricism of the Rondo.

The Divertissement on a French Theme in B minor, D. 823, a set of theme and four variations, was written two years before Schubert's lamentably early death and it is not quite as serious nor as skilled as the sonata movements that precede it on this disc. But it would take fairly advanced players to pull it off, as this team does.

The Fantasie, which is the only piece most people are likely to have heard in concert, is, as I've said, a masterpiece, written only six months before Schubert's death. In its twenty minutes it ranges from the opening poignance to sunny lyricism to stark agitation which then returns to the opening F minor opening and a quiet close. It has been recorded many times. In modern times the nonpareil recording has been that of Murray Perahia and Radu Lupu; their recording, made in the mid-1980s, has never been out of the catalog, it's _that_ good. Still, this recording is fine, except for some note-spinning that comes towards the end; it begins to sound like Czerny exercises at that point. I am assuming that our pianists lost their concentration for a few seconds.

It's a sign of Victorian culture that so mnay homes had not one but two pianists, who spent evenings sitting together at the keyboard. A wealth of material was open to them, and Schubert's rises to the level of genius. On this 2-CD set the highlights are two acknowledged masterpieces, the Hungarian Divertimento and the "Grand Duo" Sonata D. 812. The rest isn't filer, but the various landlers and marches fall below these two great works, which are at the level of Schubert's more famous late sonatas.

The usual compliment paid to duo pianists is that they sound like one player, which is true here, but Aebersold and Neiween are also notably fine musicians. Compare their "Grand Duo" with the recent live performance by James Levine and Yeveny Kissin; it immediately becomes apparent how subtly and beautifully Aebersold and Neiween have merged into one voice. I am not a particular fan of four-hand music, which too often recalls parlor palms and antimacassars, but this double CD gave me great musical pleasure--it's one of the best I've heard in decades.

Although these are popular and widely heard compositions (that's why I gave it 4 stars) they are very soothing when you want to mellow out. However, I can't understand why the title reads '20 Classical Heartbreakers' when there are 25 pieces.
