5 out of 5 stars Bettered by the real thing.......2007-03-21

I discovered the wonder that is Sumi Jo after I kept remarking to myself "Wow", every-time I played an operatic compilation and this one track came around - same track each time - hers! So, I sought to hear more and bought this CD, for no other reason than it was the only one Tower stocked. Sadly it seems that Sumi Jo is a little slow in receiving her rightful invitation to stand on the main podium. In my opinion, she is about as good as it gets, and certainly has a rightful place alongside the greats of Callas, Horne, Hendricks et al.
Well, what can I say, I love this CD, her voice is fluid and elegant, sharp but not cutting, well formed and with a force that can be projected or held, it's a wonderful CD on so many levels and one I have never grown tired of listening to each morning, what a great way to start the day! As an introduction to operatic arias I would certainly recommend this as I am sure it would surprise and enchant even the most hardened of sceptics who think that "Opera is not for me", or that there was no life after Callas.
This afternoon I was very fortunate to have 5th row seats at her spring recital, here in Japan, and what a truly awe-inspiring performance. A genuine world-class soprano Sumi Jo certainly is. Today's repertoire ran from Handel, Vivaldi, Benedict, Strauss, Bellini to Verdi. Singing comfortably in FOUR languages she delivered a performance that the CD in now way prepared me for. A performance that brought her four encores, numerous standing ovations and thunderous applause from a usually reserved (Japanese) audience. Besides her obvious musical talents I have to say that I found her to be such a marvellously warm and appreciative human being who was genuinely appreciative of her audience and I can't wait to get out there and listen to more of the joy that is Sumi Jo.

4 out of 5 stars Sumi Jo tackles Belcanto.......2006-11-03

Coloratura soprano Sumi Jo delivers another delightful album, focusing on arias and pieces from the Italian chamber music composers (Giordani, Bellini, Rosa, Caldara, Cesti, etc.). While I believe Sumi Jo is better-suited to the French composers (see her album "Les Bijoux" on the Erato label), she proves her mettle here by delving wholeheartedly into a section of opera which a lot of sopranos do find quite difficult, the belcanto pieces are an artform in themselves.

In particular, her readings of "Star vicino" (Rosa), "Alma del core" (Caldara), and "Intorno all'idol mio" (Cesti) are chill-inducing. Supported by Vincenzo Scalera on the piano, the feather-light voice of Sumi Jo glides through these pieces with enviable skill. A beautifully-presented album.

5 out of 5 stars A promise fulfilled.......2004-10-28

This collection of famous Italian arias is in my opinion one of the greatest recordings of the decade. Jo finds a new style and colour for each song, be it hauntingly romantic or elegant, poised baroque. One of the most beautiful voices today. Do not miss this at all costs!

4 out of 5 stars Loverly voice, perfect technique.......2003-04-04

I noticed her voice a couple of years ago on TBS TV station live concert in Korean. The applause for her was like thouder storm, and since then I remembered her forever.

There is no doubt about her voice and technique, which is one of the best among her peers today. But even in her best reviewed CDs and live performances, I always felt there is a little regret, which is the lack of passion. Behind her crystallike and gentle voice, I found the music is second to the technical showoff, or maybe I should say she is so perfect techincally that the music content was overshadowed. While, from another perspective, all her CDs can be perfect text books for students.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2002-01-17

This has quickly become my favorite album. Sumi Jo's voice is wonderful. Here she sings accompanied by the piano alone, this highlights her excellent talent.

If you have not purchased a Sum Jo album this is the one to buy. If you collect her recordings this is a must for your collection.

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was certainly one of the greatest singers of her own, or indeed any other time. An obsessive perfectionist, her flawless technique and intonation over a huge range, vocal flexibility, breath control, phrasing, stylistic versatility, and above all her focused, radiantly beautiful sound were matchless and incomparable. All these are on full display on this generous 2-CD set, which features over a dozen arias, songs by Schubert, Wolf and Richard Strauss, and some lighter fare. The recordings were made between 1950 and 1967, and the singing becomes better and better, the voice richer and more varied, the expression deeper and more immediate. Not surprisingly, the peaks come in the arias from her signature roles in Mozart's Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Cosi fan tutte; Richard Strauss' Ariadne, Rosenkavalier, and Arabella, which rise to real ecstasy; and arias from Weber's Freischütz and Smetana's Bartered Bride, which are wonderfully intimate and touching. She is less convincing in roles she never sang on stage, and the "childish" voice she cultivated especially for Hänsel and Gretel is unnatural and contrived. The same is true of the last two "popular" numbers, which sound condescending and artificial. The songs, however, have all her customary finesse and inwardness; the Wolf group, perhaps chosen for its gentle humor, is charming, while Strauss' "Four Last Songs" (represented by two) shimmer and soar. Schwarzkopf's singing had instantly recognizable characteristics: a tendency to hold back both vocally and emotionally, giving a sense of noble restraint, but also of cool detachment; excessive use of color and nuance, creating a fussy, calculated and somewhat artificial air. Only rarely does she "let go" with full voice and spontaneous feeling. However, as these recordings show, she invariably inspires admiration and captures ear and heart through the inimitable, glorious beauty of her voice. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fine anthology but still prefer her "Four Last Songs" recording.......2006-11-06

The engineering and audio quality of these 1960's performances are surprisingly good. The songs are wonderfully peformed and cover a range of periods and styles, but I find myself returning to her recording (also re-released on CD) of Strauss' "Four Last Songs", which I would give 6 stars -- my favorite recording of all time.

4 out of 5 stars RIP DAME ELIZABETH (1915-2006).......2006-08-04

This set is a fine tribute to this extraordinary singer and musician. I was saddened to read about her passing. She had a long life (90 years) and inspired a whole generation of singers and music lovers throughout the world.

5 out of 5 stars SCHWARZKOPF ----- ONE OF THE GREATS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.......2006-01-29

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's career is what legends are made of. She is every bit as fundamental to classical singing in the twentieth century as is Maria Callas. Schwarzkopf sang with refinement, polish, beauty of voice, and meticulous articulation. She was the greatest Mozart and Strauss soprano of her day; her ability to sing the operetta music of Lehar, Suppe', and Johann Strauss has not been equalled; she performed with distinction orchestral compositions of Mahler, Brahms, Bach, and Handel; her Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, and Mahler lieder were exemplary. She sang many operatic roles, far more than many people realize, and was certainly the definitive Marshallin in "Rosenkavalier" throughout the 1950's and 1960'. I saw her many times in recital in Chicago, and even at the time of her farewell (which I was fortunate enough to see), she was sublime. All of the superlative qualities of Schwarzkopf are generously demonstrated throughout these two wonder CD's. Virtually every item is magnificent (though obviously some will prefer some to others) and has the detailed Schwarzkopf imprint stamped right into the music. This CD, great as it is, represents only a very small part of the greatness of Schwarzkopf. I already own tons of her operas and recitals, from which many of the items here come from. But for the sake of completeness, I will probably add it. A person who loves great singing can never have too much of the art of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. She's a vocal icon.

5 out of 5 stars ¡PERFECT!.......2005-02-10

I only want to say that you can hear, in this double cd, one of the great singers of all time. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Why? Because she sings all the arias and lieder with pure of tone, brilliance, perfect inflexion, modulation, excellent control breath, measured vibrato, and, all above, great emision of colours. She is master in this art.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECTA INTERPRETACIÓN.......2005-02-09

5 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......2005-12-24

Personally, I think some of Mozart's best work are his songs for voice and piano. I think this CD is the best recording of Mozart's lieder that you will find. Bonney sings in a very pure, tender, smoothe, yet still rich tone. Her diction is impeccable, her technique is spotless as she glides from one phrase to the next, making it seem as though it couldn't be easier. And of course the music itself is absolutely beautiful (as most Mozart is).At times it can be charming and delightful, sometimes its most moving and sentimental and romantic, and sometimes it takes on a darker tone. And one other thing I like about this album is that it is soothing and relaxing...something to listen to while you're sleeping, eating, taking a bath, or while you're just trying to unwind. I give this album 5 stars, and I think if you buy this album, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best recordings you'll find.......1999-09-13

For those familiar with Bonney's work, it should come as no surprise that this disc is a treasure. If you prefer meatier, more dramatic voices, stay away. But if you love fluid, supple subrettes, this is the disc to buy. Bonney's silvery tone and flawless technique, her musicianship and consummate collaboration with Parsons, make it quite simply one of the best recordings you'll find.

After years of being one of the foremost singers of light lyrics, Kathleen Battle, searching for challenging new musical expression, tackles the dramatic Mozart repertory. Blessed with one of our generation's prettiest soubrette voices, Battle breezes through the technical challenges of the Countess and Constanze, but sounds like a little girl trying on Mommy's shoes. She lacks the vocal variety and depth to successfully bring these pieces to life. Her renditions of the soubrette repertory, especially "Ruhe sanft," are Mozartfully graceful. In the Magic Flute excerpts she demonstrates that merely singing Mozart's written notes is enough to bring its beauty to life; practically all necessary expression is written into the musical lines. -- Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars The Best Battle Album........2007-02-10

I have most of Kathleen Battle's albums and must say this is my favorite. Her distinctive voice is crisp and sails effortlessly through the music, James Levine on the piano is fantastic and compliments her as if the two had been made for each other, the repitoire is expertly selected, and the recording is crystal clear. This is Battle in the prime of her career -- this is one of those albums you will find yourself coming back to.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, Kathleen!.......2006-03-04

I have been looking to reacquire this album for forever!! It's great, and I love Kathleen's voice here.

I have to say, though, that the Amazon.com editorial review must have been written for another album, for neither 'Ruhe Sanft' nor anything from 'Die Zauberflote' is on this disc.

=^_^=

5 out of 5 stars The greatest of recital albums, part 2.......2005-09-04

It's hard to simply repeat what someone else has written, but before I noticed the review above, I was going to say that this is the greatest vocal recital I've ever heard. It's a pleausre to be the second to voice that opinion.

Why is the editorial review about Mozart? Amazon nods.

5 out of 5 stars The Magnificent Kathleen Battle Has Done It Again!!.......2002-03-04

Go Kathleen! I often dream of what music will sound like behind the Pearly Gates of Heaven-my dreams are no more, I have found what I've been searching for. Just push play and then be prepared for your body and soul to leave this earth behind. Believe me new and established fans-she IS that good.

From the first to the last track "La Battle" captivates and stuns her audience into a cult-like stupor. Indulge in Purcell's "Music for a While". After listening to a 30 second clip, I knew I needed this CD. She slowly and sensually lulls you with her perfected pronunciation. Her performance is like rich imported chocolate melting in your mouth. On Mendelssohn's "Neue Liebe" "La Battle" does an about face and speeds things up a bit. This tounge-twisting, finger-snapping performance is outstanding. Only a great opera Diva can handle such difficult piece of work, but as well all know, Kathleen never disappoints!

Kathleen masters Mozart's " Ridente la calma, Das Veilchen and Un moto di gioia". She paints such wonders with her voice that Monet must be rolling around in his grave. ;)
The 4 Spiritual at the end deserves only the utmost Praise. "Honor, Honor, His Name So Sweet, and Witness and He's Got the Whole World in His Hand". Check out her fantastically flawless super-HIGH notes! These songs are reason enough to get this CD.

I will forever be a Battle fan because of this recital. Thank you for making the Opera world a better place. We LOVE you Kathleen!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest of recital albums!.......2002-01-16

Kathleen Battle In Concert has been a part of my classical listening experience for many, many years, and many, many repeated playings. Every time I play it, I feel real joy at hearing Kathleen Battle in the opening bars of Purcell's "Come All Ye Songsters."

Miss Battle brings a high level of musicality, an impeccable use of phrasing and some truly beatiful high notes to a wonderful mix of lighter art/love songs, and more serious, but very joyous gospel classics, as in her rendition of "He's Got the Whole World In His Hands."

It's been too many years since Kathleen Battle has recorded such a delightful recital album. If you're reading this Miss Battle, please please record another! We miss your voice greatly!!!

5 out of 5 stars Singing with presence.......2007-06-18

The piano part is not without bad moments, the recording is quite bright, but yet there is not a unpleasant hard edge in singers voice one might imagine. Instead there is a lot of presence and maturity of great artist that made me stop and listen wonderful interpretation of familiar songs. If artists like Seefried and Jurinac are your favorites, I bet you'll appreciate Grümmer as well - try Abendempfindung to start. Quality/price ratio is exceptional.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed by first listening.......2003-08-04

After reading the rapturous reviews of this 2 CD album, I purchased it last week. There is a lot of music for the price, and the recording quality it good considering the age of the recordings. But I found myself less than enthusiastic about Elisabeth Grümmer's singing. I was particularly interested in the Schubert lieder. What I value most in lieder singing is naturalness and a certain pleasingness to the ear - lieder is after all song, not opera. Grümmer's voice seems to me more suited to the latter. I can think of a dozen or two contemporary lieder singers who I would much prefer over Grummer. Of the rest of the music on the album, I can't venture to say anything as I have only begun to explore this CD. But for Schubert lieder, stick with Fischer-Dieskau, Brigitte Fassbaender, Ian Bostridge, Sarah Walker,Richard Jackson, Janet Baker, Felicity Lott, Barbara Bonney,Elly Ameling, Stephen Varcoe (a remarkable voice - his version of Am Bach im Fruhling and Auf der Donau, cannot be beaten), Matthias Gorne, Cheryl Studer (her versions of I'm Fruhling, Der FluB, and Am See are wonderful) and innumerable others - in no particular order. While I'm at it, I have also listened to Bryn Turfel's recent recording of Schubert lieder. It has been highly reviewed in many quarters, but none of his performances would be my first choice.

5 out of 5 stars An Answer To a Prayer........2001-01-05

It's amazing what treasures one can discover when browsing around Amazon.com! Discovering this 2 CD set, and quickly receiving it in the post soon after seemed like the answer to a prayer.

Here's more than two hours of lieder recital items compiled from broadcasts dating from 1948 to 1970. No allowances need be made for changes of acoustic or recording quality. One can listen entranced and undisturbed until, after the last track, applause breaks out after the last of Richard Strauss' "Four Last Songs".

If there is a welcome disturbance, it is the appearance of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and a chorus, joining the singer in a Schubert setting of a song from Goethe's "Faust". In his autobiography, Fischer-Dieskau provides a wondrous appreciation of Elisabeth Grümmer, allocating more space to it than to comments about all his other colleagues put together.

I shall not attempt anything similar, adding only that a reminder of the extremely low price should be enough to urge all lovers of German lieder to add this to the trolley.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty Pure!.......1999-09-04

Grümmer's voice was probably the sweetest voice ever recorded.

She bares her soul in each and every recording and makes you gasp at the sheer beauty and urgency of what she sings; She simply bares her soul. This 2-CD together with her recording of Humperdinck's "Hänsel & Gretel" recently re-issued under EMI's "Great Recordings of the Century" MUST move you to tears!

I am really at a loss for words here - just get it, sit back and listen to the greatest voice of the century!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the great singers of the 20th century.......1999-04-20

This is a fantastic recording at an unbelieveable price. Two live recordings of concerts given by this great spinto soprano who was never truly appreciated by the music-buying public. The voice retained its freshness until she retired, and this collection of lieder makes one weep at the sheer beauty of her voice. A great bargain!!!

1 out of 5 stars Bag of tricks with a large hole.......2006-10-19

Schwarzkopf never really learned to sing. She applies what always sounds like an untrained voice to music that she simply doesn't have the ability to sing in any complete manner. This remains true on this series of recordings in several languages which might as well all be German. She scoops, she employs straight tone, she approaches high notes as if she is trying to jump through a hoop held a little too high. When she allows her vibrato to appear on a held note her pitch sags. When she tries straight tone instead, her pitch swings sharp.

Schwarzkopf always sounds like the best singer in a local choral group who has learned enough vocal tricks to convince amateurs that she is a real diva. Her entire career is a testament to the gullibility of the general public. There are plenty of Mozart aria and lieder collections available . Listen to "Ridente la calma" by Lucia Popp or Barbara Bonney (clips available on this website) and then listen to Schwarzkopf again and you can readily hear what I am saying.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mozart singing from early and late Schwarzkopf.......2006-07-13

In her prime, which ran roughly from 1952 to 1967, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was the most acclaimed lieder singer in the world, only surpassed perhaps by Fischer-Dieskau. This historical reissue combines one of her most famous recordings, 16 Mozart songs accompanied by the great Swiss pianist Edwin Fischer. The recording hasn't been out of EMI's catalog since the early Fifties, and here it reappears in an excellent remastering of the original mono sound that is lifelike and only a bit boxy.

The second half of the recital comes from 1967, a set of Mozart concert arias that ES made with George Szell as a follow-up to their bestselling Strauss Four Last Songs; there would also be a recording of Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn songs with Fischer-Dieskau that I am not so fond of. In any event, Schwarzkopf didn't retain quite enough voice to throw herself into these arias, but her innate musicality and the fact that Mozart lay perfectly on her voice makes up for any flaws here--just don't expect the young Kiri Te Kanawa. The obbligato piano part in K. 505 is played by Alfred Brendel, who remains a bit cautious, as does Szell, no doubt in deference to Schwarzkopf.

In all, the incomparable Mozart songs should be considered the main attraction, while the concert arias are a souvenir bonus for those of us who cherished Schwarzkopf as an indispensable artist.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!!.......2006-06-08

This is a great recording to have. Mozart lieder and arias are always beautiful and her singing -so clear and beautiful- makes them even more delightful. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars At The Top of Human Voice.......2005-02-11

Schwarzkopf has got one of the most beautiful voice of the century. Almost all great musicians of her time flocked to accompany her either on the piano or with an orchestra. They included not only Geiseking here, but also Edwin Fischer and Furtwanglar just to name a few, and Glenn Gould admired her voice most amongst all classical singers.

Mozart is the biggest genius in the history of music; and Mozart's greatest achievement are his operas with all those beautiful and melodious bitter-sweet arias. Here with this CD with Schwarzkopf in her best, you will be introduced to one of the most beautiful peaks of the art of singing in human history.

Schubert's lieders are deservingly popular. But the more you listen to Mozart's lieders and arias like those on this CD, the more you will incline to think that the main reason why Schubert become more popular is, Mozart's arias, albeit more pleasing to the ears and soothing to our souls, are technically much more demanding, structurally or otherwise so that few singers could render them as perfect as Schwarzkopf.

The recorded sound of this CD is almost as perfect as any modern recording. For the piano accompaniment, however, all except one were by Geiseking, one of the few greatest German pianists who also excelled in Debussy. He enjoyed in his life time and thereafter such a big name (so much that even Martha Argerich desired and actually took lessons with him )! Yet unless you're really attracted to his playing, his role as an accompanist is really no more intriguing than Gerald Moore or even Parons. Needless to say, Brendel by then still under the wings of Edwin Fischer was in comparison to Geiseking, no more than a new boy. He was nevertheless shining here. It is also noteworthy that most of the arias here were recorded by Schwarzkopf in her very prime. In a nutshell, one can't expect more of this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-12-30

This album is certainly worth adding to one's personal collection. Schwarzkopf's voice is simply gorgeous. My personal favorites were Ridente la calma,Abendempfindung an Laura, and Im Frühlingsanfang ("Erwacht zum neuen Leben", Vado, ma dove? It is worth listening to again and again.

      5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful Surprise.......2002-09-26

I wanted to get an album with Ellie Amling singing at least some Mozart songs or even arias. I was delighted to find this album and even more delighted when I started listening. The songs sparkle and she renders Mozart about as well as anyone ever did, I suspect. The nocturnes are more nocturne-like and I think they are just perfect. I got this album 6 months ago and it has been one of my favorite albums ever since.

4 out of 5 stars Little Jewels from Mozart's Creative Workshop.......2001-07-22

I find that Mozart's lieder are some of the most neglected pieces in his oevre. I bought this CD out of curiosity to hear what they sounded like and I was astounded and enlightened by what I heard. The music itself is Mozartian in style and beauty and it needs no introduction.

Elly Ameling sings the leader with a light and airy voice that is perfectly suited to the repertoire. Due to the fact that she is German, the pronunciation sounds authentic. Her accompanist Dalton Baldwin does an excellent job with the often difficult piano parts and it seems to me that they had a ball when they made these recordings. Not only was there a piano accompanist that was excellent, but there are also two songs with mandolin accompaniment. The mandolinist Benny Ludemann gives us expertly performances.

The Notturni on the other hand are not so satisfying. These are pieces that are composed for three voices and wind accompaniment. The soloists including Ameling, Peter van der Bilt, and Elisabeth Cooymans did very well but I think the Netherlands Wind Ensemble could have used some more clarinets and basset horns than the score requires. Somehow I felt that they were very weak performances.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Coloratura Album.......2007-02-16

The artistry of Rita Streich presented in this multi-disc set represents an art that in all likelihood would not return: the Viennese school of coloratura and lyrical singing.
Together with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Rita Streich studied voice with Maria Ivogun, a great coloratura soprano of the German-Austro school. Together with her colleague, Streich excelled in the Viennese-style coloratura singing. This album presents her wide range of repertoire from Austro-German to French to Italian opera; from classical opera to romantic Strauss operetta; from lieder to folk songs.
What this album does NOT include is Streich's Russian repertoire, some thing that, owing to her maternal descent, she was most adept at.
Unlike Schwarzkopf, Streich owned a voice that is out-right lyrical. It is even lighter, even more agile, even more silvery, though not as forceful as Schwarzkopf's on demand. Listen to her delightful "Bastien und Bastienne", her Mozart concert arias and enjoy her highly articulated, musically refined delivery. It is the exemplary Viennese singing. Her soubrettes as well as lyrical heroines are nothing short of being superb.
Not being as internationalised a singer as Schwarzkopf, Streich nonetheless was a representative figure of Viennese coloratura singing. Some times I would even feel that her coloratura is even more superior to that of the great dramatic coloratura of the 20th century, Joan Sutherland, again a very much more internationalised singer than Streich.
If you are undergoing voice training, this box set is essential.
