Unique coupling and superb 3rd Symphony.......2002-12-02

Listeners of Rachmaninov symphonies will find an exceptionally powerful rendtition of this work with Neeme Jarvi. This 3rd is carries all the weight and drama of the other greatest recordings, though perhaps not surpassing them. The vital playing of the London Symphony Orchestra is complemented by the recording--the one really great attribute of this disc. The luxurious Chandos recording is at once highly detailed and wonderfully enveloping. The sound quality of this recording matches, and may even surpass, the two other most finely engineered recordings of this symphony that are currently available (Ashkenazy/Decca and Jansons/EMI). The Two Intermezzi by Kallinikov are also a welcome coupling to this symphony, which is followed in most discs by the Symphonic Dances (which most would be purchasers of the disc will probably have anyway). Even if you own other great 3rds (such as Ashkenazy/Concertgebouw, or Ormandy/Philadelphia) this is a recording not to be missed.

Jarvi has outdone himself!.......2002-06-27

Though I am a Jarvi 'fan', there are times when I think he rushes music a bit, mainly in synphonic 'last movements', but here, he gives just the performance the doctor ordered! For merely 'classical music lovers' (without musical training), it's hard to warm up to any performance other than the first one heard. My first was Ormandy with the Philadelphia orchestra. I still prize this recording, but in this instance, I think Jarvi brings the same quality emotional panach ... with a slight more 'vehemence' ... which seems right on the money. Also, the recording is better (naturally, being digital). The album-notes also, are very good.
