We are so used to the absolute stylistic assurance of Vivaldi's music, that coming face-to-face with his tentative apprentice-piece is something of a shock. In his 12 Op. 1 Trio Sonatas, first published in 1705, the young Vivaldi shows himself to be an unashamed neo-Corellian. There would be scant interest in these works today if they were merely slavish imitations. But of course they're not. Vivaldi takes Corelli's forms and vocabulary and moves them on a stage. He does not make the rigid distinction between the sonata da chiesa and da camera which Corelli did, and a number of his sonatas are clearly mixed in style. And when he's feeling confident he can be harmonically audacious, technically demanding and melodically generous to the bass line. London Baroque understand young Vivaldi well, and they bring a real sense of discovery to these pieces. Without undue exaggeration they positively relish the first signs of Vivaldi's emerging personality, gently pointing his early interest in the sequence, celebrating his wit in the sawing cello accompaniment to the Allemanda of the fourth sonata, and indulging his taste for virtuoso display in the dazzling La folia Variations.

One of the problems with Vivaldi's Op. 1 is that the 12 sonatas are about 25 minutes too long for a single CD. So some imagination is required to provide some interesting fillers for the second disc. London Baroque get it just right. For the sake of completeness we are offered Vivaldi's two other published trio sonatas (1716), and for a bit of context there's also a Corelli-inspired violin sonata from Op. 2. They also include three works requiring a quartet of strings (for which the ensemble is enlarged to include the violist Irmgard Schaller). The Concerto in C major, one of dozens of such pieces, is remarkable for its finale – a pulsating French chaconne – which the players endow with positively Italian gusto. Best of all are the two sonatas, Al Santo Sepolcro (RV130 and RV169). Perhaps written for candlelit vigils, they reveal a more profound side to Vivaldi's character, with suspension-laden preludes (really milked by Ingrid Seifert and Richard Gwilt) leading to gloriously argumentative fugues.

London Baroque are on excellent form here. Slightly edgy in tone and a shade cold from time to time, they are nevertheless genuinely enthused by the music. I always know I'm in safe hands when each piece in a collection such as this really seems to have a distinct character of its own. These are carefully considered performances underwritten by continuo playing (on harpsichord and organ) of inventive brilliance. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic deal!.......2007-02-25

If you are a fan at all of the Four Seasons you should love this music. I will admit right now that I am a classical music fan. I don't write or perform it. I am a novice listener. I have never taken any music lessons(though I am leaning in that direction) and certainly have not gone through any university music training. I started out in rock and roll but found classical as I got older and fell in love with it a few years ago.

With that context in mind I do hope I am able to recognize quality and this work is of the highest. It helps when you are starting with good ingredients in the first place. You can't bake great bread without great ingredients and Vivaldi's music library has some of the greatest musical ingredients of the last 300 years. They are very much the foundation for modern western culture and music. His talent is woven through what we are

The first 26 CDs are instrumental starting with the four seasons and working through many of the Master's many popular works. I will admit the four seasons are not the best interpretation I have heard but it is definitely acceptable. The rest of the music shows us many facets of the Baroque style and you can see themes emerging through some of the pieces that give us a 'fingerprint' of Vivaldi's style and the parameters of the stylistic leanings of the genre at the time. If you want to immerse yourself in 18th century music this is your chance

This music would be ideal for someone who owns a store and is looking for background music. With over 26 CDs of instrumental music alone you could have those constantly looping and you'd probably never get bored of them(OK I may be stretching it a little there). The reason is that the music does not leave a bad 'aftertaste' in your mind. It fits into the background as easily and naturally as it is to listen to it consciously in the foreground. If you are a fan of classical Baroque you don't usually need to be in the mood for this, it will adjust your mood to itself and Vivaldi's music is almost always of an uplifting sort if this collection is any indication. If you want something to listen to at your job 8 hours per day this is good for the mind and it would take you over a week to get through it if you listened to it every minute of every work day. You will also work without the worry of the music distracting your concentration. I find it enhances it when I'm working. I don't know how well this would work on school kids but teachers might want to try playing this during school time. You may create a few geniuses, we certainly could use more!

If you are looking for something to ease your sleep and oil your dreams I have put these CD's on in the background. Not only can I easily fall asleep when they are playing quietly in the background but it helps you sleep and you wake up in a very pleasant atmosphere if the music is still playing quietly when you wake(you probably would need to rip them to your MP3 player to do that). It's like napping at a classical music concert without the worry of being nudged by your spouse or offending the other concert goers with your snoring. That will be quite a unique experience for you and possibly give you some real sweet dreams. It has for me

So to wrap it up this is very intelligent, uplifting music that is great for your mind and your soul. It is definitely worth the purchase if you are a fan of the Four Seasons and the Baroque genre in my novice classical music fan's opinion

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Broad Selection.......2007-01-25

This 40-cd collection affords me a rare pleasure almost daily: the thrill of hearing something new by Vivaldi. Despite my best efforts over the years, I've managed to miss hearing a lot of great works by the master. Listening to a single CD now and then, catching tunes on the radio... you can't possibly get a comprehensive understanding of Vivaldi's output that way.

But when you work your way systematically from CD 1 through 40, you're sure to find many pleasant surprises. I've been skipping through everything I already know -- in some cases, it has only taken me about a minute to get through a whole CD (first 3 seconds of each track is usually enough). But then I stop and listen carefully three or four times to anything that's new.

Ah, what a pleasure. I've already acquired some new favorites. And some old standbys have proved even more rewarding, e.g. at first I thought RV 127 (CD 7, tracks 10-12) was performed too slowly (Naxos No: 8.553742 is much faster), but now I'm not sure; maybe it's BETTER that way! I can't recommend this set highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars $70....when was this???.......2006-11-25

Wish the cost was $70 now. Guess the record producer (or Amazon) got tired of making less than $2 per CD.

5 out of 5 stars $70/40... you do the math........2006-04-07

No, I don't own this collection...yet. However, the price of the collection compels me to review it beforehand. Never have I seen such a complete collection of Vivaldi compositions at such an incredibly low price. At $1.75 dollars a CD, the record producer (Brilliant Classics) isn't making much of a profit. The compilation pulls some of its works from DG Achiv Produktion's vault (see Standage), such as the violin concertos, as well as from unknown producers (the Poland Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra is heavily featured). The collection is so complete that it is academic, and I would not be surprised if music libraries quickly emptied it from Amazon's shelves. The collection is simply worth it for the incredible price (English Concert's recording of the violin concertos cost nearly 30 bucks, and is exactly featured here). Overall, the price alone makes this collection exceptionally attractive, and the ensembles featured aren't bad either.

    Album Description

At the dawn of the Baroque era, Venetian composer Giovanni Gabrieli and his followers developed the concertato style of composition. One result of this innovation was to encourage composers throughout Europe to explore the expressive and technical solo possibilities of instruments like the bassoon, traditionally relegated to non-solo roles. More than a century later, late Baroque masters Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Philipp Telemann and Jan Dismas Zelenka, all born within a three-year span, composed some of the finest and most challenging music ever written for the bassoon. This recording features several works from this era.

For this recording a bassoon, rather than the cello, was used as the bass continuo instrument in combination with the harpsichord, except in the Zelenka Trio, where the composer specified violone as one of the instruments of choice. Accordingly, the modern double bass was employed here.

Introduced to the bassoon while in public school in his hometown of Massapequa, New York, Frank Morelli studied with Stephen Maxym at the Manhattan and Juilliard Schools of Music, and was the first bassoonist to be awarded a doctorate by the Juilliard School. With over 140 recordings for major labels to his credit, his recording of the Mozart Bassoon Concerto with Orpheus on the DG label won international critical acclaim. The Orpheus CD "Shadow Dances," which features Morelli, won a 2001 Grammy. He has made eight appearances as a soloist in Carnegie Hall and has appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center on numerous occasions, including at the Whitehouse for the final state dinner of the Clinton presidency. A member of the renowned quintet, Windscape, ensemble-in-residence at the Manhattan School of Music, he also serves on the faculties of the Juilliard, Yale and SUNY Stony Brook. He is editor of the landmark excerpt book, "Stravinsky: Difficult Passages for! Bassoon", published by Boosey & Hawkes. Frank Morelli is principal bassoonist of the New York City Opera Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the American Composers Orchestra.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A unique but limited compilation.......2005-07-11

I was drawn to this album for its unique compilation of "La folia" (pronounced "la foh-LEE-ah," literally meaning mad or empty-headed) -- arguably "the most lasting and famous tune in Western music" and "one of the most remarkable phenomena in the history of music," according to a breathtakingly comprehensive Web shrine, "La folia, a musical cathedral," which explores the hidden world of this famous 16th-century theme and endeavors to list all derivations and interpretations of it. The motif, with its characteristic harmonic pattern, has fascinated composers to the present day (many samples, including many by modern composers are available on that Web site).

Truly, as a theme and variations, this CD may seem repetitive and boring to some. That would be a matter of personal taste. However, I am rather fascinated with it, even more so as I have learned of its history. Among the most famous and influential variations (and my favorites) are those of Arcangelo Corelli (Track No. 1) and Antonio Vivaldi (Track No. 4). I also enjoy the Geminiani. (...)
For a bit of concise background, I excerpt and adapt a few paragraphs from "La folia, a musical cathedral." Its roots (linguistically, metaphorically, musically) of madness, dance, folly, fertility, and pleasure have captured the imagination of many. The taste offered by "La Folia, Variations on a Theme" is perhaps not yet the definitive collection, but for those entranced by La folia, it whets the appetite for more:

"'Folía' (modern spelling; the old spelling lacked the accent, as was the norm in Spain during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries) is of Iberian origin and refers to a fertility dance in three-four time originating in the late 15th century. In music Folia meant, at least till the 1670s, a very quick-paced and tumultuous dance, in which the dancers carried men dressed as women upon their shoulders. They were literally driven mad by the noise and the stirring rhythm. The 'early' Folia is sometimes called Folías españolas while the 'later' Folia might be indicated as Folías italianas. Derived from the Tuscan term 'Folle' (meaning empty-headed) the title Follia (with double LL) is used by many Italian composers. . . . The English word Folly has roughly the same meaning as the Tuscan term. In France the structure and its variations became known as Folies d'Espagne, with reference to its presumed origin. . . .

"What is so special about this tune?

"(1) The instant appeal of the music might be explained in the human's pursuit for balance. Speaking from a musicological point of view we are dealing with almost perfect symmetry and intricate harmonic layering.

"(2) By far the most important reason is that it is very pleasant music to listen to. There is somehow an instant appeal for listeners and composers alike. It even sounds familiar when you have never heard the piece before. . . . Being captivated by the tune is of course a matter of personal taste, for there remain plenty of people who get bored by hearing only a couple of variations.

"(3) From 1672 up to now the theme has not lost its power. . . . Composers are always looking for something that will give a piece instant flavour and character. La Folia variations provide lots of freedom too because there are no fixed numbers of variations to complete nor has there to be any structure between the variations.

"(4) Finally there is the interesting social phenomenon that the music had its roots in popular culture and developed into a stately court dance; from a fertility dance for the people into a courtly flirtation."

    2 out of 5 stars Very Redundant.......2005-06-05

I bought this album for one piece, that being track number four. After I listened through the entire thing I found that I only liked tracks four and five, and after listening to those a two more times, I became very annoyed.
For those of you who don't know, La Folia is just a piece with the same repeating pattern. These patterns go on for one hour with this CD and become boring and annoying.
Tracks number four and five are really the only decent tracks on this album.
Don't become dissapointed with this CD like I did.

    4 out of 5 stars Corelli's best work........2000-09-01

This is a spectacular performance of one of Corelli's best work La Folia. I highly recomend this CD to people who like boroque music.

This box is the first in a two-part series of all of Vivaldi's published instrumental music. There were twelve volumes in all, numbered consecutively by his publisher as opera 1-12. None of this bears any relationship to the order of composition, or even the quality of the music, although most of it is first-rate Vivaldi. Rather, it reflects what the composer had on hand, and what the publisher thought would actually sell. The music consists of sonatas for solo instrument with continuo (harpsichord and cello) accompaniment and concertos--generally for violin and string orchestra. Included in this first box are the famous Concertos op. 3, subtitled "L'Estro Armonico," which Bach found to much to his liking (he arranged several for keyboard). All of the performances, by I Musici, are first rate. --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars They're not all the same........2007-05-26

There are some who opine that Vivaldi's concerti and chamber works are simply variations on a theme, that he simply repeated himself. When Philips put out these discs, I "liked" Vivaldi but cannot say that I appreciated him. This ten disc set and its companion (Vol. 2) have changed that. I have loved listening to them over and over again. It is only when you listen to the many different works in succession that you begin to appreciate Vivaldi's genius. These are simply superb recordings.

    5 out of 5 stars Authority.......2000-02-17

I Musici has long time been a famous interpereter on Vivaldi's music. And as this box set shows, they are definitly the authority. Vivaldi wrote hundereds of concertos, almost in some same style. But in between I Musici can distinguish the subtlety and delicacy of every piece. The result is a full and clear delination of Vivaldi's concerto, with correct style and atmosphere. The acoustics is a bit over-echoed, but is well-balanced. (After all I finished listening this 10-cd box, it took me over a month.)

5 out of 5 stars baroque with period instruments.......2002-01-24

Though the baroque instruments don't have the depth and richness of their modern counterparts, they have a charm and beauty of their own, and these sonatas are a treat, and a change from the often heard Vivaldi concertos. He wrote over a 100 sonatas, but they don't get performed or recorded often, and in this CD, you get 3 of them played to perfection.

The C major sonata RV 779 wasn't discovered until the mid 1970's, and is my favorite of the Vivaldi pieces on this CD. It has a large part for organ (played by John Toll), as well as one for the tenor chalumeau (played by Colin Lawson), which is a single reed instrument related to the early clarinet.

Despite the information given on the amazon CD listings, the A major RV 59 and G minor RV 58, which were once thought to be authored by Vivaldi, are actually the work of Nicolas Chedeville, a Parisian composer and musette player. These are delightful pieces, and match the loveliness of the Vivaldi compositions...in fact, the G minor sonata just might be the choice piece on this CD.

Paul Goodwin is one of the world's great oboe virtuosos...he specializes in repertoire that spans the 17th through the 19th centuries, and he's an expert in period instruments. If you like baroque music, I'm sure you'll enjoy this delightful CD.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful sounding Vivaldi on baroque oboe.......2000-10-07

A pleasant and well-recorded collection of Vivaldi sonatas (two from Il pastor fido) played on period instruments.

In addition to this recording, one may want to have a listen to Telemann: Oboe Sonatas, also featuring Paul Goodwin on baroque oboe and Nigel North on lute.

If you like baroque chamber music in general, and the italian school in particular, its hard to pass these up. Wonderful performances, well recorded. The programme notes are first rate.

Early in his composing life, Vivaldi's chamber compositions bore more than a passing resemblance to Corelli, and these are no exception. However, they also go beyond that, and the performers bring out effectively the added color and drama that Vivaldi would later incorporate into his thematic concerti.

Having said that, these are just wonderful small pieces to curl up with on a winter's day. The performance of opus 1 as trio sonatas (variously incorporating a cello, additional violin, theorbe, etc as opposed to just violin and keyboard) gives this programme a luscious feel...Like a big mug of hot chocolate. Great value too: Because Op. 1 rarely fills 2 CDs, there are assorted other sonatas included; just as well done. I just wish Sonnerie could have worked their wonders on opus 2.

    5 out of 5 stars Huge enjoyment.......2001-02-11

I didn't take music appreciation, so my rating is based on sheer enjoyment. I listen to this while traveling to/from work and it never fails to please. I have other Vivaldi works by other better-known performers that I haven't enjoyed nearly as much (or kept in the player nearly as much). After having this for several months with no reviews, I thought I'd pass on that at least one person is a *very* satisfied customer with this.

5 out of 5 stars Music I grew up with and loved.......2005-08-05

My parents had this record and played it over and over again, along with Segovia's Bach recordings. They're the reason I took up classical guitar. The album uses non-traditional (for this kind of music anyway) instruments, yet doesn't disrespect the music in any way. To this day one of my favorite arrangements for the Sonata in G minor Larghetto. I've been trying to get a copy of this album on CD as my family considers our vinyl copy an "heirloom". Sadly I can't seem to find any online. I guess I'll just have to keep visiting amazon.com for the audio samples! Sony, have a heart!

or just for relaxing and organizing your thoughts. The pieces are familiar even to people who think they've never heard Baroque music, and the playing is so impressive and musical that my "I Hate Classical Music" teenage son was blown away!
