The title of this record is misleading. These are not Bach's famous Trio Sonatas for flute, violin, and bass; they're transcriptions from his organ sonatas, cantatas, and other works, some for a trio of recorder, violin or viola d'amore, and bass, some for recorder alone. The former are by Bach himself, the latter by Sébastien Marq, the group's recorder player. Bach often reused his works in other forms and was an inveterate transcriber. This has encouraged generations of musicians to follow his example, but his ability to make an arrangement sound like an original remains unequalled. The trios on this record are wonderfully idiomatic: the instruments are used for utmost color, the voices engage in conversation or intertwine as in the weaving of a tapestry. Of the two pieces for solo recorder, one, being essentially linear, is well-suited to the instrument. In the other, a transcription of the Second Suite for unaccompanied cello, Marq either omits the multiple stops or turns them into arpeggios, grace notes, and other ornaments. Though inventive, it doesn't really work. In both solo pieces, his breathing is clearly audible and rather disruptive, though it creates natural phrasing. In this Bach year, it is interesting to hear some of the composer's unfamiliar, lesser works along with the acknowledged masterpieces, and much of the music is very beautiful. The Trio Sonatas all have two sprightly corner movements flanking a slow, plaintive one. In the first one, a number of very strange-sounding notes suggest the misreading of an accidental. The performances are excellent; an unusually prominent gamba provides a solid foundation. --Edith Eisler
