If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22

I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...

My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.

I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!

I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Fabulous album!.......2006-01-09

The constructive sonorous straightness enclosed inside a stylized cipher, the lucid tonal geometry and an overwhelming spontaneity that elapses with an intrinsic pleasant character, are some of the remarkable features of this fabulous composer. He has been able to approximate to the searches of the more advanced vanguard that proceeds from Pierre Boulez.

His musical speech supported by diatonic lines and the overlapping of interweaved tumultuous tonalities are not any obstacle to enjoy and appreciate his art.

I think this admirable Concerto for Orchestra is one the most representative works after the WW2. When you buy this double CD you will include it among your most estimated treasures.

Exceptional and rewarding selection with an insuperable sound.

I still remember my first time playing Luto's Concerto for Orchestra when I was in PYP. my thoughts were something like "What the hell is this! It's tonal, yet so radical, yet so beautiful!" and then, when i heard his Musique Funebre at an Oregon Symphony concert, I was astounded that it was composed using Luto's version of twelve-tone theory. something so beautiful, yet so atonal! This twofer it worth it if only for those two pieces, yet you also get his amazing 3rd Symphony and Venetian Games, etc etc.

A portrait of the great Polish composer.......2004-08-19

Witold Lutoslawski has rightfuly reached the position as one of the great masters of the 20th century music. His compositions are always presented with the composer's unique sense of beauty of tonal colour and pitch organisation which never turns out to be just pure mathematics. An artist should NOT be scientist or philosopher. Just a pure artist with heart, ideas and musical invention, that's all.
Even if Lutoslawski would not write anything else but the Concerto for orchestra, this magnificent, monumental work is one of the best orchestral works of the 20th century. Although many people describe the Concerto as the composition with Bartok influences, I do not find so many relations between these two works. Lutoslawski has such unique orchestral colour and is much more radical than Bartok.
The most radical works such as Venetian Games show the composer's taste for "sounding" but it is the weak point in his opus. It took Lutoslawski some time to rediscover himself. The Cello Concerto, Double Concerto and Third Symphony are excellent proof. Cello Concerto is a unique dialogue between soloist and orchestra, while Double Concerto is perhaps too "plural" to become a masterpiece and it lacks the certain stylistic point. Third Symphony is a true masterpiece and constantly surprises the listener with its ideas. The symphony also has a great organic development, good contrasts and modern beauty of melodies.

Lutoslawski's music sounds to me like an early modern sensibility moving to incorporate more recent techniques. The two earliest pieces here are both superb -- "Concerto for Orchestra" (better than the Bartok piece by the same name!) and "Dance Preludes" from the early/mid 1950s. Following the post-Stalin thaw, Lutoslawski made contact with the West, and the two works from that initial encounter, "Funeral Music" (for Bartok) and "Venetian Games" are perhaps the highlights of the disc -- resolutely modern music that, again, maintains the accessibility of Bartok or Stravinsky. I don't find the "Cello Concerto" of 1970 compelling, but the "Concerto for Oboe, Harp & Chamber Orchestra" of 1980 is brilliant.

"Symphony No. 3," finished in 1983, is widely considered to be Lutoslawski's masterpiece, but I am not convinced. Similar structurally to his "Symphony No. 2" (avoid!) and his "String Quartet," but better, most of the work is development, but it never seems to develop into anything very noteworthy. Lutoslawski was trying too hard to be radical in these works, while his strength was in carrying on in a less radical style with light touches of serialism and later developments. Though Lutoslawski himself was conducting the Berlin Philharmonic, the original recording of the Third Symphony included on this disc is nowhere near as good as the performance just a month later by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting. Look for the Sony disc of Lutoslawski's SYMPHONIES NO.s 3 & 4" (see my review). Another set worth checking out is called LUTOSLAWSKI: ORCHESTRAL WORKS, SONGS, STRING QUARTET, a recent 2-disc release in EMI's GEMINI series (see my review).

The range of fantastic music on this disc alone reveals Lutoslawski's level of accomplishment among the late 20th century greats.

Great.......2002-07-11

Lutoslawski is easily one of the best post-war composers I have yet to encounter. As other reviewers have commented, I did find it difficult to fully appreciate some of these works on the first listen. The entertaining and original "Variations on a Theme of Paganini" is probably the most accessible, but only vaguely hints at the drama and power of the later works. I was first drawn to the "Concerto for Orchestra", which, although mostly tonal, still provides ample evidence of Lutoslawski's originality.

Reference Recording.......2005-12-01

Richard Stoltzman and Michael Tilson Thomas made an outstanding team for this recording. Stoltzman's tone is often the object of debate, but in this album, it works wonderfully. The jazz influences in all of these pieces call for a brighter, and (for lack of a better word) looser sound, which Stoltzman can pull off with flair. He does an excellent job of making the opening section of the Copland silky and dream-like. The bravado and virtuosity in the cadenza are fitting, as is the occasional stretch or pause. It sounds almost improvised, which is what Copland was going for in this very difficult section. The orchestra (directed by Tilson Thomas) is also excellent - sparkling one moment, incisive the next.

The rest of the album is a collection of pieces by other American composers of the 20th century. "Goodbye" is an emotional memorial of Benny Goodman, the Bernstein "Sonata" is an interesting expansion of the work for clarinet and piano. Look out for the opening of "West Side"... it has startled me more than once when I wasn't paying attention! And the "Three Preludes" at the end are, again, an interesting expansion of the work for piano.

I can't say that I've heard a better performance of the Copland, so this album is worth it just for that. But, the other pieces are fun to listen to as well and nicely round out this album.

Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17

I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

An interesting mix..........2002-05-18

This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

A touch of history...........2002-01-28

An exceptional set. The history of music making of the 20th century in 4 CDs. Even from the first track with Giuseppe Campanari and Charles Adams Prince you can see that people put much time in collecting the best interpretations and putting together an amazing collection. Other highlights include the "Mack The Knife" with Lotte Lenya, the Bachiana Brasileiras, The Fanfare For The Common Man with LSO conducted by the composer and so many more. An undespiuted *****

Decent Quality, But a Little Rushed.......2002-09-20

I have to agree that this is a good collection of music for the money, especially if you are a novice at the Classics like me. Each disc covers a 40 year period with an hour of music and a little bit of history in the cover slip. However, there were some oddities that made me question the quality of this product. First, a few of the songs seemed like the conductor was hurrying them along so the songs on a disc would add up to exactly one hour -- where's the love? I know I'm a novice, but there are just some songs that are so famous that you can pretty easily tell when they are being butchered or compressed. Second, the quality of the product was suspect. Some of the discs looked like they were manufactured in 1990 and some in 1994. The older ones just had the titles on the discs and the newer ones had a screen-printed color change with no information. They couldn't even use the same type of Jewel Case throughout the collection. In total, it's good for beginners and the money, but not much else.

Not bad, but not a perfect as well. The music selection is very questionable for my taste. The performers are not always very suitable for specific masterpieces. It is inherently, just because such mix of names cannot be bad ;). If I will compose such set a lot of forgotten things should take their place.

Bought this CD to calm and relax myself after a hard days work. CD seems like a great collection to me. It's got a lot of songs that I recognize and some that I don't. It does sooth me a bit after the the many stresses of everyday life.

I'm not really a classical music nut like "Frasier Crane" so I'm not sure how much merit I can bring to the table with this review. But I think it's great..!!!

Some of the world's truly finest musicians perform some of the all time greatest and most loved musical masterpieces. The CD makes for easy and peaceful listening of an evening.

Excellent Compilation.......2005-03-05

We were looking for a good source to introduce our children (4 and 6) to various classical composers and melodies. We had tried one of the Baby Einstein tapes, but all the music was done on synthesizers. This compilation is done with real orchestras.
It has been a great tool in getting the kids familiar with all different types of composers - from Baroque and Classical, to Romantics and someone modern composers.

A smidge of a rant..........2005-01-02

I'm going to rant for a bit on Ms. Hilton's playing in the Nielsen. I should state that I do enjoy this recording for its breadth of literature. Certainly it is a very intense recital and one which, for the most part, is performed admirably. Except for the Nielsen. Considered one of the more difficult pieces written for clarinet, this towering concerto is a test of any clarinetist's stamina and technique. Ms. Hilton, while clearly gifted, doesn't do anything for my greater appreciation of the piece. Considering what Nielsen wrote and to hear some of Ms. Hilton's interpretive choices, I'm left to wonder if there is any happy medium for the work. I've yet to find a recording that satisfies my desire for clean technical execution with tempo and cadenza interpretation that doesn't feel rushed or spastic. Ms. Hilton seems to forget that accuracy is important and borders on technical murder with a tempo that, while putting many a clarinetist to shame, also nearly kills the piece. I don't want to say that her playing feels uncontrolled; she seems well in command of her faculties, yet I can't help feeling that if she'd backed off the tempo a bit, we'd have here a recording of fantastic quality. I'm not looking for a Benny Goodman interpretation, with the tempo one metronome marking above death, nor am I looking for a tempo one click under a clear day on the Autobahn (which is what we have here). I just want control and accuracy TOGEHTER! Is that too much to ask?

Carl Nielsen. Clarinet as you have never heard before........1999-09-03

While you can listen to extracts of Aron Copeland's Clarinet Concerto and Lutoslawski's Dances, you must buy the CD to hear Carl Nielsen's Clarinet Concerto. I first listened to this concert in a radio broadcast back in 1959 when I was 15. It sent chills down my back. It still does when I listen to it. I bought my first 33 vinyl with this concerto and Nielsen's flute concerto, and got my high school teacher to play it in class. It sent chills down my classmates back, most hated it as they wanted Elvis, but my teacher loved it. This is Carl Nielsen's - the great Scandinavian composer at his most outrageous but also interesting. The sparseness but beauty of the string orchestration, the constant infiltration of the snaredrum and the domination of the clarinet, makes this amazing post-modernistic clarinet concert unique. It has new twists to the already heard greatness in his outstanding 5th of 6th symphonies, and also his famous Quintet for Winds (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Basoon & Horn) composed in 1922. Here Nielsen promised each of the first players of his Quintet for Winds that he would compose them a full fledged concert for each of their instruments. Alas Nielsen only managed his very lyric but oh so humouristic Flute Concerto in 1926, and this Clarinet Concerto before his death in 1931. But what a way to go (to heaven?), where he hopefully is still composing the promised concertos for Oboe, Basoon and French Horn. So we have something to look forward to when we go there. I am sure Benny Goodman, who also recorded this concerto earlier, is practising these instruments so he can play them for us if we manage to get the ticket. Play this concerto loud in an enclosed room, let your dog and kids out to play, and let me know your comments. This could have been named a Concerto for Snare Drum as well. Why has none of the 2000th century composers managed to copy Nielsen's finesse & great technique with snare-drum in classic music? You tell me.
