Ivan Moravec has made gorgeous studio recordings of both of these concertos. He sounds more adventurous in front of a live audience in the Schumann; taking more chances with rubato and pushing the music toward even more intense expression. It's not ideal playing for this piece, but it works on this occasion and produces a memorable performance, with Edoardo Mata and the orchestra following the soloist's lead very effectively. Conversely, Moravec's studio recording of the Brahms seems even more intense than the live performance, though it, too, is very good. There's a lot of great music (79:38) on this well-recorded disc. --Leslie Gerber

Moravec recordings of these works are still available. .......2006-02-22
Sadly, this fabulous recording became unavailable when Dorian went out of business. The good news is that Ivan Moravec recorded both of these concertos for Supraphon, thanks to whom both recordings are still available (cat. nos. SU 3508 and SU 3865). And they include additional Schumann and Brahms: the Kinderszenen and the Second Concerto.

Since Curzon made two further recordings of each of these pieces, this unearthing of 78s from 1945-46 wouldn't seem to be all that useful. And, in fact, as well as Neel conducts the Mozart, this recording must defer to Curzon's remakes--especially since the piano is underbalanced. But the Brahms has qualities not present in Curzon's better-known recordings. Jordá, whose career in San Francisco was destroyed by George Szell, creates a potent orchestral backdrop--ironically, more effective than in Curzon's stereo remake with Szell conducting. Curzon's playing is more reckless and powerful than in his stereo version, and the slow movement is so eloquent, it moved me to tears. Despite slightly unclear sound (well transferred), this Brahms is memorable. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:
Superb Brahms reissue.......2000-02-20
This concerto is one of the most difficult to interpret in the repertoire, and the performance on this disc is one of the most successful ever recorded. When it was first issued in the fifties, critics rated it above the existing recommendations of artists like Curzon, Backhaus and Wuehrer, pointing to the sweep and intensity of the soloist's playing and the unaffected grandeur of Steinberg's accompaniment. The comments remain as true today as then, and few of the recorded performances made in the subsequent forty five years have equalled it, either. I like the Moravec / Belohlávek and Pollini / Abbado versions, but as a performance I still put this right at the top.
Neither soloist, conductor or orchestra is in the very best-known league, but all are outstanding, as is the co-operation between them. Firkušný had started his career before the second world war in Europe, with many performances in Prague, where Steinberg was an established conductor. Clearly the two were in great sympathy. Don't miss this.
The coupling is also good - a sober and straightforward version of the Schubert Unfinished Symphony, showing off some excellent soloists in the Pittsburgh Orchestra of the early fifties.
The only regret is that no stereo version seems to have been made of the Brahms despite its 1955 date - EMI had begun using stereo some time before. And why didn't Firkušný ever record the work again (so far as I know) despite keeping it in his repertoire until his death in the nineties? Perhaps he felt he could never equal this version, one of the high points of his recorded career.

William Kapell died at 31 in a tragic plane crash, just as he was on the cusp of a maturity that promised to ally an extraordinary technique to interpretive wisdom. He's at his best in these live performances. The Brahms, from a 1953 Carnegie Hall concert months before his death, shows a new lyricism in his art, along with sheer power and technical mastery. Mitropoulos's volatile accompaniments help create a masterful reading. The 1949 Prokofiev has all the dynamism and glittering pianistic fireworks that made Kapell famous, with the added plus of Leopold Stokowski's conducting. It's preferable to Kapell's more cautious studio recording of the piece for RCA. Sonics are on the raw side but no bar to enjoyment. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Kapell's Prokofiev 3rd.......2002-01-02
Prokofiev's 3rd is my favorite piano concerto, and I have either owned or listened to nearly all its recordings. For a long time my favorite was Gary Graffman/George Szell. When I first heard Kapell playing it with the Dallas Symphony/Dorati, it struck me immediately as the "best" recorded performance of it I ever heard, and the only one I would listen to for years. The best other performance I heard during those years was by Argerich - not the recent one -- but the Kapell was still my favorite.
When I found this disc in 2001 of another Kapell Prokofiev 3rd, I bought it immediately and was even more impressed than I was with the other. The liner notes say that Kapell's version with the Dallas Symphony was "curiously tame" but I disagree. There was nothing tame about it, curiously or otherwise. This one, however, is clearly better because he has better technical execution and more control of himself and his instrument.
This version is also better recorded, and the orchestra does not drown him out - I don't know whether we can thank the conductor or the recording engineer, but since it was Stokowski, I am inclined to thank the engineer. The playing is also more fluid and colorful, and Kapell has a force, passion and intrepidness that makes this a thrilling recording. It IS the best Prokofiev 3rd.
I only listened to the Brahms a few times, and while it is a very good performance, I cannot call it great. My favorite remains the Leon Fleischer/George Szell recording I still have on vinyl.
stunning Brahms D minor!.......1999-04-26
This has to be the most dynamic and exciting performance ever of the Brahms D minor - throughout it is electric - a young pianist in a work by a young genius - all the fire, passion and intensity are there. Kapell's technique is legendary, and the atmosphere of the live performance adds to the over all effect which is stunning! - Every good wish,
Yenda Smejkal
