This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Liszt honors Beethoven.......2006-07-13

In the 16th volume of Naxos' Complete Piano Music of Liszt, we get an interesting sequel of Beethoven transcriptions to the last volume of the 2nd and 5th symphonies. I say "interesting" because I have actually only heard one of these works by Leslie Howard: The 'Capriccio all Turca.' I've never heard the other works from Beethoven in their original song form. I'm quite a fan of Louis, though, and being familiar with all his piano sonatas, I can say that the music material here and its quality is on par with his piano sonatas... obviously that's a HUGE compliment.

Liszt's genuine reverence for the master and Liszt's understanding of transcribing lesser-known songs into wonderful and dramatic piano works is a testament to his genius and legacy. Liszt, as usual, transcribes these works; he doesn't butcher them. The transcriptions are meticulously faithful and detailed; they sound almost like Beethoven wrote these works for solo piano. What you're getting with this CD are enjoyable and quite melodious piano transcriptions of these Beethoven rarities that I never knew existed.

To encore the listener, the CD starts with Liszt's 'Capriccio alla Turca' which is not to be mistaken with Liszt's "Fantasy on Beethoven's 'The Ruins of Athens.'" Leslie Howard and others have recorded that and this is different. I actually like this version better. And for those already familiar with it, Yung Wook Yoo's interpretation and sensibility in playing this work is MUCH better than Howards. To say it bluntly: it's a musical gemstone. That Mozartean melody with its distinct Beethoven tone really makes the piece lively and immediately catchy. It only takes one hearing, I think, to enjoy the march. The dramatic turn-around too, which builds up suspensefully and then literally explodes passionately sends shivers up my spine. It's tremendous music under Liszt's fingers.

Surprisingly, the disc continues to pump out amazing and underrated music from Beethoven. The 'Sechs Lieder von Goethe' are *all* notable for their Beethoven charm. The "Mignon," "Es war einmal ein Konig" and as the previous reviewer rightly remarked, "die Trommel geruhret" are splendid, majestic, and ultimately satisfying. "Adelaide" is another intricate work of Beethoven beauty and Liszt bravura. It's a ten minute long work which Liszt sustains quite well on the piano. Beethoven's original music is easily detected but in a cadenza-like fashion, Liszt employs some seriously arousing virtuoso sections to heighten the fire of the piece. On the whole "Adelaide" is a glorious effort on Liszt's part; it has everything and always stimulates reflection.

The 'Sechs geistliche Lieder' have some memorable works but in my opinion, are just a small step down from the previous Goethe set. In the realm of Beethoven, a step down is always a step up for other composers, so take that lightly. In this set, the "Bitten" and "Vom Tode" stand as the supreme highlights. "Bitten" is fascinating under Liszt's work as a miniature. But the real appreciation goes to the "Vom Tode." What a brooding and dark work, typical of Beethoven's darker side. The foreboding and solemn gentle washes of piano notes will certainly seduce the attentive listener. It's the masterpiece of the entire set in my view.

Concluding this delightful disc is a somewhat difficult work to grasp at first: the "An die ferne Geliebte." Like the "Adelaide" this transcription lasts over 10 minutes and takes some patience to discover its hidden wealth of music. A bit on the safe side, Liszt plays it like it was a Beethoven andante and so the piece, as serene as it is, tends to lack animation and excitement. Nevertheless it is a pleasant work transformed by Liszt. Indeed all of these pieces are played very well. Even though I've not heard the original music or these song transcriptions from other pianists, I recognize Yoo's stupendous touch and phrasing. His interpretation of the 'Capriccio all Turca' should be the standard now. Additionally, his effortless effort with the "Adelaide" and Goethe songs are to be commended.

Bottom line: The Beethoven lover will find piano material to satisfy beyond the 32 Piano Sonatas. The Liszt lover will fall into his spellbinding realm of Beethoven. Both should find the music enduring and will understand Liszt's full-fledged genius of transcribing these songs to piano. Did I mention the Naxos budget price too? Where else can you get these transcriptions for such a deal?

This is a most engaging disk. Liszt takes some of Beethoven's less well known works -- more melodic, and less motivic than normal with the Great Thunderer -- and works his pianistic wizardry to transform them into miniature gems for the piano.

The disk opens with the Capriccio alla turca on the famous Turkish March from the Ruin of Athens -- a warhorse for pianists of old, but now not so often played. It's a pity as the work has a real sense of fun and sparkle, not always true of Liszt's transcriptions. The rest of the disk is made up of song transcriptions. The Goethe Transcriptions are excellent. I particularly enjoyed Die Trommel Geruhret, which I had previously known from Nilsson's recording with Klemperer. Liszt gives this short piece a splendid sense of fire and menace. The Adelaide and Sacred Songs are all enjoyable, and the closing item, An die Ferne Geliebte is the best of all. This was perhaps the first unified song cycle, and in its transcription Liszt has been both faithful and imaginative, turning it into a superb sequence that more pianists should play.

The pianist, Yung Wook Yoo, is a young Korean virtuoso. He has all the attributes of a good Lisztianer -- superb chops, lots of colour, and a sense of drama. Far better than the comparative Howard performances. There is an interesting comparison available for An die Ferne Geliebte, in Nikolai Demidenko's live recital. Yoo gives us more Beethoven in a performance reminiscent of the song cycle origins, Demidenko gives us more Liszt and places it as a piano original.
