Approaching the voice as an instrument, British-born Indian Sheila Chandra brings an expansive, timeless quality to this collection of improvised songs based on ragas and modern folk music. Most of the tracks, outside of the drone, are unadorned--as is Chandra's pretty voice, simple in its low tone and unaffected in vocal style. Still, Chandra travels to expansive places, reliving her days as Monsoon's lead singer on "Ever So Lonely/Eyes/Ocean." Though Chandra revisits British and Celtic music, her voice is at its strongest when borrowing from traditional Indian vocal technique and ragas. "Bhajan" is a soothing hymn with drone as are "Sacred Stones" and "Om Namaha Shiva," proving Chandra has indeed succeeded in connecting to ancestral voices for a lovely, meaningful album. --Karen K. Hugg
Customer Reviews:
Very relaxing.......2006-11-10
Sheila Chandra is one of my favorites. Her voice is so smooth and rich. The execution of each note is right in tune. The bols she sings is very interesting, not a favorite of mine, but I do find it amazing that someone can sing like that. If you purchase this CD, I think you'll be pleased.
A Voice To Be Reckoned With.......2003-08-17
First, let me say that if you prefer your world music with strong instrumentation over vocals, then this is not the album for you. Sheila Chandra takes her listener's on a musical voyage using almost nothing but her versatile, compelling voice. The instrumentation is made up mostly of drones, and even that is minimal. But if you are a fan of voice, or a cappala work, you will dig this album.
Chandra lives up to the title of this disc by weaving eclectic vocal styles from various traditions together, sometimes on the same track, as on the so-so Dhyana and Donalogue. The stronger tracks include Nana/The Dreaming, The Enchantment, and the totally inspired weaving together of Ever So Lonely/Eyes/Ocean. And as a previous reviewer noted, the two Speaking In Tongues tracks have to be heard atleast once, but after that, they really are skippable (thank God for programmable CD players) as they don't offer much in way of asthetic enjoyment.
So all in all, the album is hit and miss. It really works best as background music, for relaxation or while surfing the 'net. Of course, Sheila's best was yet to come on ABoneCroneDrone, but you can hear the seeds of that work being planted here on this somewhat experimental disc.
Mostly cool.......2002-12-05
I purchased this album after hearing Sheila's work on several Makyo albums and because I loved Sacred stones ( it is also on the Trance Planet compilations). This is a great album, running the gamut from Indian vocal Ragas to an amazing blend of Indian and Celtic sounds. As much as I love this album, I wish it was not so varied. It jumps back and forth in tone and tempo which makes it hard to use for mood or meditation. Shifting from raga to ambient tone it a bit jarng either way you go. Still a fantastic album and worth owning.
Good CD.......2002-06-27
Sheila Chandra is a good artist that hasn't got her due. Her vocal skills are comparable to Enya and yet she is nowhere to be found on the airwaves...even on world music and alternative stations.
This is a good CD but I liked her other CDs like Quiet and Zen Kiss better.
Is Still One Of My Favorites.......2001-08-31
She has one of the greatest voices ever...wonderful to listen to during yogo, or anytime you want to escape from the life's craziness. A must have in anyone's CD collection.

Tuu: All Our Ancestors.......2006-02-25
ethno-trance music ( as Martin Frankin describes it in site) hypnotic and beautiful. A record to have, to listen and enjoy how far creativity and wits can lead.
Tuu's best, in my opinion, and great sleeping music, too.......2006-01-03
I've put this on right as I go to sleep. I'm out like a light in just a few, while "focusing" my sleep on the way.
I like this in part because, to me, it sounds the most "Tibetan" of their albums and the least drifting toward a more generic new age/ambient music sound.
Say, ommmmmmm.......2004-01-14
Put your headphones on, adjust the levels to achieve maximum results, close your eyes, open your heart, breathe deeply and take in all the sensations this disc will provide you. Light a stick of incense while you're at it; it'll enhance the experience. When you listen to this disc you embark on a transcendental journey from within. This is music with an Eastern flair, complete with water drums, clay pots, flutes(Chinese and Bansuri) , chants and various percussion instruments that are blended with samples, synths and loops for an otherworldly experience. Although it is heavy on the Eastern vibe, like meditative monks dancing through your head, the universal appeal of this ambient world music goes beyond religions into the realm of spirituality. This is a good disc to listen to focus your attention within and reach out to the world around you. It is extremely peaceful, relaxing and not in the least bit boring since the exotic nature of the instruments holds your attention quite well. This music shadows the distant past, the unknown future and the mystery of life. Recommended as a backdrop for those meditative moments in life. Good quite music from the Waveform catalogue that grew out of the internet radio show Musical Starstreams.
Liquid air........2002-01-18
So sensual the image of a dancing slave girl just detracts from it. Forget the images, skip the concepts. Just float.
Either that or I'm just getting old.
tribal-ambient fare.......2001-04-22
Comparatively speaking, this first album by Tuu features a bit more ambience and spacey mood than its successors, and a bit less percussive resonance, contrasts, and dark colors. Still, it's easily recognizable as being by the same folks. The electronics is very subtle, never getting in the way, and the overall result works very well as headphones-oriented mind food. On the negative side, the length of the cd, barely 40 minutes, is something of an annoyance--to reap the full benefits of this kind of trancy material, one needs a rather longer uninterrupted period.

Stravinski done right.......2006-07-07
I have owned this CD (but issued as EMI Eminence) for many years and was surprised to see no reviews. Mackerras is not the name that pops to mind when someone says "Stravinski"; it is either Monteux or Stravinski himself. This is Mackerras and the London SO from 1987. Monteux was principal conductor at London 1961-64. This CD shows that 20 years later the London SO had not forgot how it was done. I prefer this to Stravinki's Columbia recordings and to Monteux's mono recording for Philips. I know you are skeptical; all I can say is that it will not cost you much to prove me wrong! What a pity it cannot be re-released on SACD (EMI has still not licensed DSD). For your trouble, you will also get the fabulous "fireworks" that Stravinski wrote for his teacher Rimski. Not enough? Mackerras ends the CD with two of the best things Stravinski wrote: "circus polka" (the ballet for a young elephant) and "greeting prelude" (Stravinski's serial take on happy birthday to you for the 80-year-old Monteux). OK, I admit that 40 minutes is kind of slim for a CD these days, but you will not be short-changed. For once, EMI actually gets the sound right.

Highly Overlooked.......2006-04-07
This was a great album. I came across it after seeing the movie Skin Deep which featured Falling Out of Love. Great song and I decided to go locate the CD. Amazingly the whole thing was great. Just fantastic good music with each song high quality and enjoyable.
There are very few albums that I can listen to all the way through - I've always been a 'mix maker' from back in the cassette days to CDs and digital music now. I constantly scan the radio stations when I drive. Well, this is one of the very few albums that I can put in and listen to all the way through without any desire to skip around. High constant quality, nice arrangement - like I alluded to in the review title 'highly overlooked'. No idea how it happened but this disc is a treasure and I'll be buying it again as mine is almost too scratched to listen to now.

Customer Reviews:
Reverential mastery.......2007-05-08
I am a real fan of the Groovemaster's series; I stumbled upon the series by accident and have been working my way through the set of ten. As has been quoted elsewhere, the only thing better than the sound of one guitar, is the sound of two guitars. This album has been noted to be the 'least grooving' of the Groovemasters, but yet it is ebullient, musical and masterful. The music has taken center stage by two master guitarists: a classical guitarist and a new age/ folk/celtic guitarist. It is a great combination, and I am having difficulty categorizing it.
The music has a reverential, spacious feel; there are moments of outright brilliance, but for the most part it is the music that takes centerstage. There are some pieces which are simply mesmerizing: the "Tibetan prayer song" is hard to put into a specific category, it sounds almost Schubertian. There is even Bach and Saint-Saens played with great effect. This is not to say that this is a classical guitar recital, the songs draw from a great variety of music.
The overall effect of the music on this album is amazing; if you are looking for harmonically rich, melodically interesting music, this album is for you. Some guitar music available tends to too dry/too repetitive(the Muzak/easy listening curse): this album definitely does not belong in that category. I do not really know the work of these two accomplished players beyond this album; I will be looking to expand my horizons.

Worth the price just to hear 'Blue Moses' alone!.......2004-02-28
Randy Weston and Melba Liston collaborate once again, bringing us one of the most interesting jazz albums I've ever heard (and I've heard my share). It has a perfect mixture of free form jazz with subtle touches of African influences (particulary percussion). The highlight of the album is 'Blue Moses'. Hearing Pharoah Sanders solo using the gaita along with 2 bass players playing at a ridiculously fast speed is just amazing. A must own cd!
A Phenomenal Overview!.......2000-11-03
This 2 Cd Set revisits many of Weston's Classic compositions with some new arrangements by Melba Liston. Along with Weston's excellent "African Rhythms" band and Dizzy Gillespie and the great Pharoah Sanders sit in on a couple of tracks. All cuts are very strong but "African Cookbook" is on fire!
This is probably the definitive Weston. A good place to start if you unfamiliar with this musical "Giant."
