Handel invented the organ concerto as a form of intermission entertainment to be performed between the acts of his oratorios. They are charming pieces that leave a lot of improvising up to the performer, and as almost none of them require use of the pedals, they can be played by any competent keyboard player. Bob van Asperen offers decent performances, but at full price they are rather expensive, especially when the Hanover Band on Hyperion gets both Op. 4 and Op. 7 onto three discs, instead of four. --David Hurwitz

Superb Performance and musical Work.......2007-05-19

G.F. Haendel is mostly known for his masterly written great vocal works, his instrumental work being less known for the wider public, except for Music for Royal Fireworks and Water Music. Though not an expert on classical music, I think this trio would give almost every listener a sheer joy (I, Personally, enjoy listening to all 3 cd's one by one, when I have the time), for one gets a great performance, as he would usually do when it comes to the English Concert, of all of Haendel's Organ Concertos for a great price (about 7$ a disc).

Prior to this 3-CD set, I had owned an old LP recording of the complete Handel Organ Concerti. What a treat this performance is! I'm a fan of the English Consort with Trevor Pinnock, so I wasn't surprised that I enjoyed this recording.

These are fun pieces that any baroque lover would enjoy.

A 3-CD set for under $25 was quite a bargain.

Handel: The Organ Concertos, Vol. 1 + 2.......2007-05-07

The Handel Organ Concertos played by Marie-Claire Alain have been my favourite vinyl for many years. I have played them so much that they were totally scratched and couldn't be played any more. It was a wonderful discovery to find these wonderful concertos on cd. Marie-Claire Alains interpretation is the best of all. She plays with a wonderful freshness and lightness which fits perfect to these baroque masterpieces. You can hear them again and again without getting tired of them and they are suitable for every kind of humour.

Paillard and Handel - A great combination!.......2007-05-02

For years I lamented selling my classical LP collection partly because of the loss of the wonderful Jean-Francois Paillard/Marie-Claire Alain recordings of Handel's Op. 4 and 7, also known as the Organ Concertos. Vinyl availability here in the states of this complete set was at best limited and I assumed Erato would quickly offer these splendid performances on CD but for me, that was not the case. For years, I had to make do with the single disc offering containing Organ Concerto Nos. 4&6 from Op.4 and Nos.4,1&13 from Op.7. And then came word of this splendid two volume beginning set from Boston Skyline and I knew my search was coming to an end. For years, Boston Skyline has been in the business of returning to music listeners - classic recordings and performances, (rightfully "acclaimed as milestones,") from the 1950s through the 1970s with their "From The Vault" series. Titles as varied as "Dance Music From The High Rennasiance" to Transcribed J.S.Bach Concerti have been the label's mainstay and finally we can add one of the great performances of Handel's splendid Organ Concerti to the Boston Skyline line up. As to these very special performances, Maestro Paillard has always treated Handel's best loved compositions with great spirit, elan and flair; never, (IMO,)overdone but just right. And here he doesn't disappoint. The recorded effect is simply stunning partly because Marie-Claire Alain's always expressive playing, (here on the Organ of the Kern de la Collegiale de Saint-Donat,) is as close to perfect as I can image. And partly because of the warm and very airy acoustic balance between soloist and orchestra. Recorded in the early 1960s, the Paillard/Alain/Handel Organ Concerti collaboration was and is one of the triumphs of the analog era and should go to the head of the class for warm and sensitive playing in an equally warm acoustic setting I can only describe as ideal for this music. Remember, the first half of Handel's Op.4&7 are available as a two CD set so don't forget Volume One and request Volumes Three and four soon. I hope you enjoy these performances as much as I do and many thanks to Boston Skyline for remembering them. Best regards and happy listening, Hal Owen.

Excellent Baroque collection - everyone should have this!.......2002-06-18

This is a remarkable collection of Baroque music. I've heard a lot of Baroque music and I am very discriminating about performance and sound quality. This set is a winner and a fantastic bargain... Somehow they've managed to choose what is truly "best" from the period (for example I've always felt Bach's Brandenburg Concertos # 2, 3, 5 were the best of the six, while 1,4,6 were relatively weaker - and lo and behold this collection includes 2,3,and 5) while missing very little if anything that "should have" been here (of course a 10 or 12 CD collection would have been even better, but you have to stop somewhere).

The performances here are excellent, and the recording quality is very high. I disagree with the person who claims this isn't "audiophile quality", because I don't think it could get much better unless it were on another medium such as SACD. I didn't particularly notice coughing on Handel's "Messiah" but Messiah fans would likely prefer a complete performance of that particular work anyway (the excerpts from Messiah here are complete pieces, but this set doesn't include the entire 2 hour or whatever Messiah). These do not sound like "outtakes", what kind of a comment is that? Somebody worked very hard to put this collection together, and they did a fantastic job (and I have zero affiliation with this, I just feel the truth as I see it should be told).

Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" is presented in it's entirety (ok, it's not the entire Vivaldi Opus 8, but it is the entire Four Seasons as normally found on any "Four Seasons" CD). There are so many great works here, which a lot of people will recognize even if they didn't know the actual piece or composer (or even that it was from the Baroque era). There's even the Mouret fanfare made famous as the "Masterpiece Theater" theme music. Yes this is a great "introduction" at a great price - which might get people to explore Baroque music further, but it's also a fairly complete collection which will suit a lot of people as such (i.e. for everyone who appreciates most any type of music these works should be "essential", but also the 4 CD collection might be all that a casual listener would "need" from the Baroque era). I feel that most people would be thrilled with this set; about the only way it might have been better would be to include information about each piece and about the Baroque era in general (there is no "text" at all with this set).

Entry level baroque.......2001-01-11

Nice cheap way to get into Baroque music. Unfortunately it's not the best recording you can get but it should be adequate enough for a non-audiophile. I've been unable to bring myself to listening to it again since I noticed that someone coughs in the background (very noticeably) during Handel's Messiah. Wonder if this is an outtakes CD.

Perfection.......2002-10-23

This cd is excellent and provides some of the best baroque music for a very low price. My personal favorites are Pachelbel's Canon, of course and the adagio from Vivaldi's Guitar Concerto in D Major. Despite Pachelbel being used in countless movies and commercials, its still a great composition and the version that appears on this cd is the best I've heard. Buy this if you want maximum quality for minimum price or if you just want some excellent baroque music.

I have played the Marcello oboe concerto, which is why I bought this cd..... the adagio to this piece of music is enthralling and wraps you up in a slightly haunting, utterly beautiful piece. I may be biased because I have played the piece, but if I can deal with a piece of music for months and months of practice and still enjoy it, it must be special. Pachelbel's Canon and the Albinoni are very famous and perhaps overplayed, but these versions remind me of Why they are so widely listened to... the entire collection is Lovely.

25 Classical Heartbreakers.......2006-11-29

Although these are popular and widely heard compositions (that's why I gave it 4 stars) they are very soothing when you want to mellow out. However, I can't understand why the title reads '20 Classical Heartbreakers' when there are 25 pieces.
