I absolutely love Deva Premal's voice and CDs. This was a huge disappointment for me. I don't like almost everything on this CD. There's nothing remarkable about Miten's voice, even though it's certainly nice to listen to. His lyrics are banal. Sweet and heartfelt, but hackneyed.
There's nothing really bad about the music, but most of it is Miten by himself (the ones with Deva are far better, to my ear), and I honestly can't find anything to recommend it.
I only gave it two stars for the few songs that are predominantly Deva's voice.
As much as I am dissing this CD I wouldn't hesitate to recommend "Love is Space." So, if you're expecting something along those lines, don't get this as it's totally different.

My girlfriend introduced this cd to me, and I have to say, I'm almost as much in love with this music as I am with her :) !!! It's a 'must have' for any couples who are truly committed to growing healthy partnerships of love. It celebrates the beauty that is at the heart of each one of us and gives such wonderful reverential acknowledgment to the divinity in all.
We've already decided that this will be the music we will choose for our wedding as we shared our first dance to the magnificent sentiments expressed in song by Miten and Deva Premal.
You won't be disappointed!!!!

This is a CD made with love. Seriously, you can smell love. What does love smell like? I don't know. So stop asking. I honestly don't see how they can do it. Its magic. When I listen to this CD I feel like I am being held. I am not a lonely person. Believe me when I tell you, I am not. OK. Maybe sometimes.

Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Carl Orff's birth,
Orff-Schulwerk Volume 1: Musica Poetica is the first release of a five-volume collection in celebration of the composer's lifetime of monumental work. Many of the works included in this series have been unavailable on recordings for decades. Furthermore, this collection marks an unprecedented addition to the worldwide music catalogue: it is the first comprehensive collection of the Orff-Schulwerk to be digitally recorded, and has been produced with the cooperation of the composer's widow, his daughter Godela Orff (who also performs on this recording), and the artistic executor of his estate, Wilfried Hiller.
Musica Poetica presents a cross-section of the great pedagogical work, Orff-Schulwerk. As prototypes for experimentation, the pieces of the Schulwerk have an openness to creativity which invites the performer to have fun while creating music. Orff believed that by speaking to a child's most natural musical instincts to clap or sing or keep a beat, these pieces would awaken the musical talent which lies in everyone.
In addition to hand-clapping and finger-snapping, Orff incorporated rattles inspired by the Indonesian gamelan tradition and by African musical cultures. Drawing on the knowledge of his friend Kurt Sachs and instrument-maker Karl Maendler, Orff developed his own set of instruments for the Schulwerk, including all sizes of xylophones, glockenspiels, kettledrums, tambourines, sleigh-bells and triangles.
Although the pieces of Orff-Schulwerk are prototypical in nature, the work reaches far beyond simple pedagogical exercise. The quality of movement, and the same scenic and pictorial elements which would later influence Orff's great stage works, are apparent in even the shortest pieces of the Schulwerk. Schulwerk runs the gamut from the fleeting, changing miniature to grand, ecstatic movement music. It encompasses parade music, folk, dance, children's songs and musical fairy tales. This collection offers a refreshing approach to music, for young and old alike.

Natural rhythm, but what is this black soul stuff.........2006-05-31
Orff is a white man with natural rhythm. So what. The music stands on its own as what it was meant to be: Studies and practice in rhythm for young children. But it is so complex and sophisticated that one never tires of it, with new aspects of its complexity showing themselves each time.
Children Love this Music.......2005-12-12
My two boys love this cd. When my first child was a mere 8 months, I could instantly calm him down by putting this in and playing it for less than a minute.
I think it is a must for every parent's music library.
True Musica: Orff v. Zimmer, "Badlands" v. "True Romance".......2004-12-11
Carl Orff fans must read the jewel in this CD's booklet found at the bottom of the 6th page from the back in "THE RECORDING" section. It relates the "unwanted merriment on the occasion of Orff's 75th birthday" concerning a performance of the first (and most famous) song in this collection. This recording is great and commences with a rich rendition of the "Badlands" theme "Gassenhauer" ("Streetsong") on track 1. Unfortunately, there never was a soundtrack album produced for "Badlands". I can not find any of the other "Badlands" songs from Musica Poetica on this CD and none are on the companion CD "O-S Vol. 2 / Musik fur kinder". "The Best Of Carl Orff", BMG 75605 51357 2, 1999 has the original "Gassenhauer" plus one of the other "Badlands" songs from Musica Poetica - Passion (house fire music). All Badlands Orff/Keetman songs can, however, be found on the 1994 BMG release (RCA Victor Red Seal) 6-CD box set version of the original Orff/Keetman recordings done between 1963 & 1975 on 10 LPs. There are at least 4 other "Badlands" pieces on CDs 2, 3, 4 & 6!
Now for the truth: The main theme "Gassenhauer" was composed by Orff's associate Gunild Keetman BASED ON A 1536 WORK FOR LUTE BY HANS NEUSIEDLER! Keetman also did half of the other 4 mentioned above, Orff the other 2. Orff's stated goal for the Schulwerk: "Improvisations which encourage further improvisation". This is precisely what Hans Zimmer did when he PRODUCED (no writing credits on soundtrack CD) 3 pieces loosely based on "Gassenhauer" for the film "True Romance", written by Quentin Tarantino as his tribute to the movie "Badlands": "You're So Cool", "Stars At Dawn", & "Amid The Chaos Of The Day". These are a fine & fitting tribute to Malick, Keetman/Orff, and, yes, especially Nuesiedler - Zimmer did NOT "rip off Orff". Is not imitation the sincereist form of flattery?
Orff-Schulwerk Vol. 1: Musica Poetica.......2003-07-04
Most people's first taste of Carl Orff comes from his grand sweeping, 'Carmina Burana' score but few often hear some of his more delicate and simple works. Orff-Schulwerk is literally music that Orff composed for students. The compositions are broken up by the particular instrument they were written for and are simple, brief, and quite and enjoyable listen. If you are of German descent you will appreciate this even more as Orff incorporates German folk music in to some of the compositions.
Brief Trivia: The first track was used in the Terrence Malick's, "Badlands".
Black Soul? I Hardly Think So..........2003-01-21
What is this about "Black Soul" in reference to Herr Orff's masterwork? Such vile attempts to debase the pure and the immortal fail horribly above... Silence would have been a far superior review than proof of inexcusable stupidity. It is apparent that no one here has the slightest understanding of the man's life, work, and passion. For good or for ill, however, there shall always exist true creative forces in this world which are forever subject to misunderstanding and slander by the petty minds of the age. Between we the conscious, and you the unconscious, lies an ocean, deep and wide; ready and yearning to devour the unlearning-- best you stay there on your side.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

This is an excellent representative 2-CD bargin set of Liszt's piano works played by a recognized expert pianist in this repertoire. The other reviewers (i.e. those w/ 5* ratings) have made their points well. What continues to bother me in many of these classical CD reviews is 'downgrading' a CD by several stars, if not more in some cases, because the listener is irked at the lack of a feature that has nothing to do w/ the performance on the recording. Such is the case here - a 3* rating because one piece was mislabelled is ridiculous - rate the music & performance first, please. If there is a problem unrelated to the performance (sound quality, liner notes, etc.), then simply state that in your review. I often look at the overall rating to determine if I even want to consider a classical CD & read the reviews - knocking off a star or two because of petty complaints is not justified.
Bolet is outstanding.......2005-01-23
There are many Liszt performers, and while Bolet was known to never substitute technical perfection for feeling, there is a great balance to his playing. 'Un Sospiro' is played on the slow side, every melody note can be heard perfectly, while his interpretation and rubato are heart stopping. While I don't agree with his Liebstraum (the honor of greatest playing is held for Cliburn on this piece, if you haven't heard him play it, go buy the CD, now), the lesser played works such as the Elf King transcription more than makes up for it. If you want a technically perfect, clear, sometimes very moving performance of Liszt, Bolet is for you (I prefer him infinitely over Cziffra, although I may be alone on that one). Postscript: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12 is NOT No. 2, this is an error on Amazon's part, and also on the other Bolet albums, it is indeed no. 12 and not 2.
Great selections; technically great but dull performance.......2004-04-09
I know this pianist Jorge Bolet is supposed to be one of the world's greatest. But I bought this as a replacement set when I temporarily lost my Phillips "Best Of Liszt" set and couldn't live without Liszt. I was sadly disappointed on the selections that overlap. While some of my favorite selections (Liebestraum, Mephisto Waltz) are actually longer here, they simply do not stir my soul as much. The pressure of the notes, the timing, something indefinable just isn't the same in this recording as in the Phillips one. The quality of sound reproduction is fine, the piano-playing is certainly correct and crisp (maybe TOO crisp?), and again, the variety of the pieces chosen is commendable, but I recommend the Phillips 2-disc set over this one. There ARE some very interesting selections of not just Liszt's original works but also some of his arrangements or adaptations of other's works, i.e., the Shubert pieces and La campanella (from Paganini).
Great Liszt compilation.......2003-12-23
Bolet's finest moments on this two-fer are the Schubert-Liszt transcriptions - you'd almost think 'Who needs a voice?' But he's equally good in the aforementioned Mephisto Waltz, and the operatic journey through Mozart's Don Giovanni.
The cons are here too: Bolet's RCA Liszt recital has better, less cautious versions of Liebestraum, Un sospiro and Funerailles. The Sonata is tremendous overall but in the end I'd rank it just a little below the best - particularly Brendel, Richter and Arrau. Yet all these renditions have great merits - even the ones Bolet surpassed himself. This Liszt compilation is overall very good.
Missing The Famous Hungarian Rhapsody #2.......2003-05-27
Although the listing at Amazon.com says this CD contains Hungarian Rhapsody #12, A.K.A #2, it does NOT have the famous #2 in C Sharp Minor. It is indeed #12. Since I bought this CD specifically for Hungarian Rhapsody #2 in C Sharp Minor, I was disspointed that it was not included. It is Liszt's most famous song, at least in my opinion. If you are looking for this song, I would suggest Hungarian Rhapsodies Vol. 1, by Jeno Jando.

The definitive "Pictures at an Exhibition".......2007-04-30
Not much more I can add to this. If you have any interest in the original piano version of "Pictures" at all then this is the one to get. Try Muti's for an excellent version of the piece as orchestrated by Ravel(Along with a great "Rite of Spring"; dirt cheap too)- Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibiton; Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring.
Nobody else understands "Pictures" as well as Richter and in his hands time melts and you are taken on a journey you will not soon forget. Richter pushes and pulls this piece wherever he wants and we the listeners are happy to follow him where he chooses to take us.
The piano sound is quite good for its time. Fairly full and with a good dynamic range. Unfortunately the audience seems to have a case of infectious coughing. Similar to the live Wartime recordings of Furtwangler in that respect. You get used to it though, and either way it doesn't matter in the hands of a performance of this stature.
There's a reason that you can still buy this nearly 50(?!) years after it was recorded. Not only are people still talking about this recital, but we are still waiting for a recording to match it in modern sound without audience interruptions. I suspect we may have to wait a long, long time.
terrible coughs........2006-11-16
there are two recordings that would've perhaps been much more appreciated had there not been several people who coughed their way through the entire concert. the furtwangler 1942 recording of Beethoven's sixth symphony and this one.
jesus. i'm not one to complain about coughing, but we have issues here. was it communism?? really, were russians this worse off???????
things set aside, the performance itself.. is magical.
i can't add much more to previous reviewers except this: expect one of the worst recordings from the 1950's... if you brainwash yourself into believing this is one of those naxos or pearl remastered 1920s recordings, you'll find yourself much more pleased.
The Most Memorialand Quoted Piano Recital from the 1950's .......2005-12-15
Svaitoslav Richter is the quintiessential pianist of the 20th century. This epic live recording of the Mussorsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" stands as the supreme recording of the piano version ever recorded. Although some will argue that Horowitz recorded of his this piece with is its numerous interpretative changes is also notable but is mearly a flashey more superficial rendition than Richter's. Richter here captures this pieces mistical and heavenly appeal so perfectly it seems its nuances are forever engrained in your mind. The Promenade is so stately and energetically expressed it seemingly gives us permission to enter a heavenly 30 minute musical forum. The variation number 5, 8, 10 and the next to last are my favorites. Being a pianist (and I use that term loosely) this recording has taught me so much with regards to vivid imagery. For example the next to last variation leaves me with the impression that it is someone taking the road to heaven and finally arrives at its gates. Then is looking at the Gates of Heaven as they Open. A grand moment in any life. Richters imagery is so perfectly unbalanced that he leaves us on edge to anticipate each colorful moment. This is truely my favorite recording in classical piano because it is so awe inspiring.

If the vivid imagery Richter creates in this live performance isn't enough to bring tears to your eyes, the technical prowess will certainly send you searching for the "repeat" button on your cd player.

A concert recording can't be perfect, this is the worst i hear. All the people are ill and the record man was probably far as 50m of the piano behind a door.

Beautiful Music for a Romantic Evening.......2005-12-15
The CD insert design of the Set Your Life to Music series might suggest that this is a collection "Classical Lite." However, while this compilation provides some Liszt's most well-known music, these beautiful and deep pieces should not be mistaken for "easy listening." These are wonderful compositions by a great composer, performed by musicians of the highest caliber (especially Claudio Arrau). This is music to close your eyes to while listening to and enjoying every note and every nuance of the performances.
Most of the selections are performed by Claudio Arrau, one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century, an acknowledged master of the Liszt repertoire and, furthermore, a pupil of one of Liszt's pupils. Arrau plays these selections with power, passion, sensitivity, and highly nuanced delicacy, depending on what a given passage calls for, as he takes the listener through the rising and falling tides of passion in Liszt's music.
The "non-Arrau" selections recorded by Misha Dichter, Wibi Soerjadi, and Zoltan Kocsis are also excellent. All the recorded selections, whether digital or analog, have very clear sound quality. Highly recommended, whether as an introduction to Lizst or to add to several other CDs of music by this great Romantic composer.
perfect dramatic piano.......2004-05-28
Both Liszt and Arrau are at their apogee in this CD. This is one the few piano cd's I've heard where Liszt's passionate genius is both appropriately frighteningly strong and beautifully tender (as many of his contemporaries noted 150 years ago). Arrau, always thoughtful, and with his emphasis on touch and color, and delicacy, penetrates to the heart of these sometimes breathtakingly orchestral piano sounds. This is lush arch-romantic piano with a huge nuanced sound, and a constant emotional ebb and flow (and sound volume) as powerful than any other composer of that tempestuous era I have heard. The cd is very clearly recorded with excellent dynamics. Every selection is strong and well chosen and the cd sets a very consistent brooding romantic mood. The best introduction to (and still my favorite) Liszt.
Arguably, one of the best classical pianists ever........2001-08-12
As soon as I heard the piano solo, Liebestraume, I immediately purchased this cd particularly because it contains some of the greatest piano pieces ever composed. During Liszt's lifetime, audiences were very appreciative of his talent and ability to express his emotions through the use of his piano. Influenced by Chopin, Franz Liszt ultimately achieved high status as a composer with the ability to play spectacular classical music. Some of the songs included possess titles about nature, and in one of the songs, the piano is played so brilliantly that it feels as if you're actually listening to fountains. Lovers of classical music should purchase this remarkable disc. And best of all, at a low price, this is a great bargain.

Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer take a convincing step forward on their third release, which at various times echoes the music of Robin and Linda Williams and a twangy version of Richard and Linda Thompson. Although gifted on banjo, guitar, fiddle, organ, and mandolin, the duo has placed a premium on the songwriting, with considerable payoff. "Tillman Co." details the ordinary terrors of rural working-class life, "Gentle Arms of Eden" evokes a mystical gospel vision, and "Ordinary Town" offers one of the best opening lines heard this year--"Common cool, he was a proud young fool in a kick-ass Wal-Mart tie"--and then somehow sums up the mysteries of small-town life. Now and again, the philosophical trappings can feel rather starched and pretentious, abetted in part by Carter's penchant for faux-Shakespearean syntax and imagery--"Hail the wayward werewolf howlin' / Haints and shades and goblins growlin'" is one such clumsy exertion--but the overriding musical and lyrical eloquence makes Drum Hat Buddha one of the more original Americana releases of the year. --Roy Kasten

Don't Be Confused by the Title.......2006-08-18
It seems like this album has a rather odd title and some people might wonder what type of music this is; one might think "new age" given the title it has. I guess it is classified as folk music. Whatever you call it, it's great music and both Grammer and Carter have smooth, beautiful voices. What a bonus to get two great artists on one album! Too bad there are only 12 songs, running just over 40 minutes; the album is over way too soon. It's a pleasure to listen to from start to finish. I am always skeptical when I see all 4 and 5 stars reviews, but this album certainly deserves the high ratings.
Unbelievable music. Warning: Very addicting! .......2006-07-19
I wholeheartedly agree with all the other reviewers who gave this CD 5 stars! If it were possible I would give it more. I was a friend of Dave's back in the early 1970's. I first met Dave during the fall semester, 1970 at the Univ. of Oklahoma. He lived across the hall from me in the Worcester House dorm. The first day of classes I heard acoustic guitar sounds from his room and that caused me to sit up and take notice. I became acquainted with him and I used to go to see him play at coffeehouses and other live music events around the OU campus. Because we both liked folk music we became good friends. He was a great conversationalist. I would love to sit at the local coffee shop and drink a cup of Joe and listen to him talk about music and other topics. He was really one of the most unique individuals I have ever met. One thing I remember about him is that he used to pull me in his room to use me as a guinea pig to try out his new songs. This was always a fun experience and I remember they were amazing songs. I had a few favorites that do not appear on any of his CD's. I used to think to myself... "this guy is going to make it someday!. Due to career moves and other factors, I lost track of him in 1978. Through the years I often wondered where he was, what he was doing, and if he had "made it" in the music world. Fast forward to June 2006 when sadly, I learned of the crushing news of his passing. I was also amazed to see that he had three CD's on amazon.com with such unbelievable reviews! I rushed out to hear the music and get caught up. After listening to this CD and the first two, my impression is that this CD is totally awesome! Dave really perfected his craft through the years and it really shows here. He picked a musical partner in Tracy Grammer that is absolutely first rate and the perfect complement to his musical style. Not only an amazing fiddle player, her vocals are equally as amazing. Her fiddle lines give just the right touch, ... perfect! By the way, is it obvious that I am blown away by this music? My favorites tunes are "Gentle Arms of Eden" ( a masterpiece... period.), "Merlin's Lament" (haunting! So cool!), and "The Mountain" (off an earlier CD Tanglewood Tree)I can see why Joan Baez picked this one to do in concert! It blew me away!) This music is so enchanting... so addicting, I am totally in awe. Not only did my friend Dave make it, he totally surpassed all my expectations! The musicianship is as amazing as the melodies and songwriting. Vocals are just amazing throughout. I can't conjure up the right adjectives to describe this. I consider myself fortunate to have known Dave when he was a struggling musician and I am glad he has the loyal following he so justly deserves. I hope he is looking down seeing all this from above. He was a great guy and a great friend. I miss him. UPDATE: 10/27/06 Saw Tracy in concert and she dedicated a song to me, Crocodile Man from Tanglewood Tree. I am more addicted to this music than ever with the release of "Seven is the Number" Dave and Tracy's last CD together. This music will endure forever.
It's sad that there is no more.......2005-10-29
I found myself craving Dave Carter music the other day. I turned of course to the cds that i have of his (and Tracy Grammer), Drum Hat Buddha being one of them. These songs still resonate with me today. I guess that they always will. I love his simple yet heartfull way of singing. He's like Bob Dylan in the sense that they prove that one doesn't need a great big voice, or to 'oversing', to sing, and connect. It is such a great blend, Dave's tiny crackly voice with Tracy's big sweet voice. I love it. I love the color, and imagery in all of the songs, but I like most of all the way he puts words and melodies together. They seem like timeless children's songs that somehow are new and fresh....and deep. It's sad that there is no more with Dave Carter's untimely passing a few years ago. He and Tracy were just starting to "get hot", at least in the Folk community. But this cd is a definite keeper, as well as all of the others. I love Tanglewood Tree as well. I still listen to this music years late, and it just proves that his music is sweet and will be forever.
The best CD I own (besides their other two!).......2005-04-24
Roy Kasten (Amazon.com review) has it ALL wrong when he writes about Dave Carter's "clumsy exertion" and "faux Shakespearean syntax" - It is EXACTLY those moments when Carter is playing with language that make all three of his and Tracy Grammer's CDs pulse with life. You can be listening to a song for the 20th time and all of a sudden a phrase like "they would...dip and spin and skate the wind like feathers" (Annie's Lover - W.I.G) or "the sand in your teeth grindin' tiny white diamonds to moments of loss that you cannot explain" (41 Thunderer) hits you and you find yourself with a lump in your throat. And there are a hundred more where those came from. In addition, even beyond the sound of the language, and his deft use of alliteration and onomatopoeia, Carter intentionally merges the sacred with both natural images and profane ones (Gentle Soldier of My Soul/Farewell to Saint Dolores [T.T]), or the mythical with the literal (Merlin's Lament/Lancelot [W.I.G]. I am on my third copy of this CD because I keep wearing it out (and When I Go and Tanglewood Tree are getting just as worn - they are the three CDs that never come out of my car's player). If you love the sound of language, love to play with it and twist and shape it in new ways, then Dave Carter is your man. And kudos to his brave partner, Tracy Grammer, for carrying on his legacy!
If it's possible to have a favorite Dave Carter CD...........2005-01-20
This one's it. What can you say about a collection that includes "Gentle Arms of Eden" which was chosen as a Unitarian hymn, to "41 Thunderer" an anthem to a Colt repeater. It's eclectic, it's amazing, and it's beautiful. Give this CD a listen, but you might as well buy the other two Dave and Tracy CDs along with this one. I guarantee you will be hooked.

They don't "warble" and you can actually hear the lyrics....First heard it on WBBM-FM during the short period of time they played non-teenie bopper music...Bought two phono discs as my then young son constantly played one...lol..Mine was in pristine conditon when cdr's came around...Guess what????..Only saw them live once but we still remember and talk about it...Had to go to a conference in Chicago a few months ago and on the way back to Wisconsin, went a few miles out of my way and took LSD all the way north...and I don't think you have to guess what was playing overly loud on the cd player....One of music's real hidden treasures....Spread the word..."Free The Music" (With thanks to WUSP..105.5 in Central Wis)...David

The song "Lake Shore Drive" and the band called, Aliotta, Haynes and Jeremiah is 60's-80's cultural Icon, that transcends the years into today. This band captured the essence of what it was like to be young and living in that era.
Today, the song "Lake Shore Drive" has not lost it's appeal with the young or the "Boomers." When you listen to the key-board player on this album, John Jeremiah, you are listening to a man playing the key-board with the fingers of an angel and the determination of the devil......"and there ain't no key board just like it, anywhere I've found, running south on Lake Shore Drive, heading on into town, just slipping on by on LSD, Friday night heaven bound." Yes!
Did the band "Three Dog Night" write the opening to "Joy To The World" about John Jeremiah?-----Yes! " ..Jeremiah was a bull-frog, was a good friend of mine, never understood a single word he said (southern Illinois accent) but I helped him drink his wine. Joy to the world---yes he is.

Having grown up near Chicago hearing this music, it was great to discover this on CD and I'm glad to have it. However the sound quality is enormously variable. Some tracks sound pretty good, including thankfully the title track, but others have definitely been recorded from a (very scratchy!) LP. That plus the minimal artwork and lack of a legit UPC bar code tell me that this has got to be a boot, unfortunately.
long time fan.......2006-03-17
I had two copies of this album on LP growing up. One that my big sister stole (later recovered), and the replacement, which came with a plain white cover; story was that the warehouse containing all the originals burned down. Was delighted to find it on CD these many years later. However, the song Long Time Gone from the original was dropped, which bummed me out. New add ons are OK, but not in the same league as Long Time Gone.

As a Chicago native, the song "Lake Shore Drive" has a very, very special place in my heart, so I'm glad to have it in my collection at long last. It's difficult to put into words what magical summer memories the song evokes.
But ...
The sound quality is abysmal on at least one cut on this CD: "For Eddy" includes an intermittent hiss that sounds like it was recorded directly off an LP. I checked - you can't hear it on the song sample here at Amazon.
And the CD includes no liner notes of any kind. Surely *something* could have been written about this group's career.
For those reasons, and believe me, it pains me deeply to do so, I give this CD three stars.

Album Description
Desert Dance is R. Carlos Nakai's musical interpretation of his experiences in the sacred place of his ancestors, Colorado's San Luis Valley. Like his critically acclaimed 1988 release, Sundance Season, the Navajo-Ute musician's latest album was recorded in the Lindisfarne chapel, a uniquely resonant structure situated within this dramatic expanse of holy ground. Many tribes, from the early pueblo dwellers to the Kiowa, Arapaho, and Comanche, have inhabited this alpine valley over time. Near Alamosa, Colorado, where the Great Sand Dunes lie, is the site of the Navajo's eastern sacred mountain, Blanca Peak, and the center of the Ute world. Nakai weaves his improvisations on the native American wooden flute, nose flute, drums, rattle, and voice into poetic meditations on the land and its history. During Ancient Voices, he delicately plays a Southern Plains war dance drum with finger taps and brushes to reveal a hidden palette of sound, much like the whisper of spirits within the valley. The joyful spectacle of desert birds frolicking upon waves of transparent air currents is depicted on Turquoise Swallows Dance, while the wind's daily moods are choreographed in temperate summer breezes, dust devils, and cloud formations on Wind Dance. Other selections deftly combine the plaintive, yet, potent sounds of Nakai's heritage to explore the mystery and unique beauty of this sacred territory.

I recommend this DVD also for those that seek the journey of inner peace! The songs,the nurishment of the meaning of each song, the sounds of comfort during a days journey! You will not be dissatisfied, i recommend this DVD to all my brothers and sisters that long for PEACE!

I first heard C Nakai while driving across country from NYC to LA. My girlfriend started playing his CD when we hit the mid west. With the beautiful senery and music it was very awe inspiring, I never forgot and 6 years later when I was looking for music to relax by with my lover, I introduced this CD...Wonderful, simply wonderful.

If you don't want to hear just flute music this album is an excellent choice, mixing flute, drum and chanting in a most pleasant listening experience, Carlos puts you into the circle, celebrating your existence with others from your tribe, enjoying the night sharing the music.
Sacred Valley.......2006-01-20
Anyone who has lived within the sacred San Luis Valley of Coloraodo/New Mexico and treked thru the desert - alpine lands there, particularly around the Sacred Peak of Blanca and the Sangre's will hear the resonance of the land within the soul-full sound of Nakai's flute and chants.

Stellastarr*'s histrionic, over baked second album paints teenage daydreams with such technicolor saturation they're impossible to deny. Singer Shawn Christensen may be overly overwrought, but how are these for song titles worth scribbling in the margins of your schoolbook: "Damn This Foolish Heart," "Island Lost At Sea," "When I Disappear," and of course the single "Sweet Troubled Soul"? On the surface they sound a lot like Interpol (who Stellastarr* of course predates) mixed with latter day Echo and the Bunnymen, but these are sometimes-fabulous, moody Arena-emo (Aremo?) tunes that are pretty sophisticated, really. The slick sheen of big radio production and incongruous backing vocals are a bit much at times, but Shawn's Danzig-on-downers vocals really grow on you after a few listens and the drumming is fabulous and often perfectly un-rockist. -Mike McGonigal

What a great album this is!! Saw them in NYC and performing they're amazing. Just thinking like lot of people that have been written here, it's such a shame they're so underrated. My fav's tracks are: Damn this foolish heart, Sweet trouble soul, when I disappear (this song reminds me so much about NYC) and Island lost at sea. Buy this album and support them, they deserve to be listened and we deserve to hear good indie music!!
Nice follow-up album from a great live band........2007-01-08
Ignore the reviews from those who think otherwise. And please stop basing your one and two star reviews based on the copy protection which has now been resolved due to class action. I had no problem scanning this into my computer and burning it to a CD, thus ending the DRM debate. Rate the artist, not the music company and their greed. Don't blame that on the band.
Extremely Underrated Band-Excellent Album.......2006-11-22
Hard to believe that The Killers once OPENED for Stellastarr*. I was at that show. I find StellaStarr* to probably be the MOST underrated band of the last 3-4 years. The melodies, singing and vocals are DEAD ON! The guitar riffs are amazing. The drumming dancable. Live-they are tremendous. And really nice people too. This Album is as good if not better than the first. Sweet Troubled Soul should have been a major hit. One of the best songs I have heard in this decade. Give Lost in Time and Sweet Troubled Soul a definite listen---Stay Entertained and Stay are definite hook ladended crowd pleasers. I just dont understand how anyone can not like this band. What a tremendous album!

Somehow this band slipped through the cracks between Interpol, the Killers (this CD is much better than those), and all the other various 80's-influenced acts out there, but this is a really solid CD that gets better with each listen. You can hear the influences (Echo and the Bunnymen, the Cure, etc.), but the sound is still original and fresh. "Love and Longing" is a great tune to start with and easily holds its own with all those great 80's anthems those who grew up then know and love. But the first song, "Lost in Time," will hook you right away. "Harmonies for the Haunted" is great all the way through, and based on this CD I am going to get their debute, "My Coco."

I agree with everything Andy French "Crotchety Music Fan" said. The first album was amazing, a classic, something I have played endlessly and will enjoy forever. All great songs, all different, one from the other. I so looked forward to this, and now that I have it, it's simply boring, boring, boring!
