5 out of 5 stars The tradition of the new!.......2006-05-08

Respect the egregious significance of Vladimir Horowitz for the great Western audiences, I really should notice that Europe had lived a Century and a half of reluctant Romanticism, while North America was in another historical process; the recent musical history began to write with two important composers: Edward Mac Dowell, a beloved and admired friend of Frau Carreno and Louis Moreau Gotschalk, who accustomed to make those Gargantuan recitals such as that famous Concert with more than one hundred pianists on stage. Indeed, this was an imported costume of those Ages, where the concept of listening music had lessened the value; the visible decay of the music in the second half of the XIX Century is more than obvious. The ominous presence of composers of the artistic height of Richard Wagner, Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler and Anton Bruckner were concentrated in Germany and Austria; Frank in Belgium and Max Reger in Swiss, but if you take a look around the musical triviality lived in the rest of Europe (with counted and isolated exceptions)where the fireworks of Liszt, Thalberg, and Alkan filled the Concert Halls in Paris, with the elusive music of Lalo or Jules Massenet and the arriving of the new Midas King of the great Halls, Strauss dynasty, included Waldteufel captivated the audiences.

The emotion for watching a piano virtuosi simply had not prize. You should remind the famous tour undertaken by Anton Rubinstein in the last years of the XIX Century. Horowitz contributed conscious or unconsciously to perpetuate the legend. Effectively, he marked a`personal style at the piano; if not let me refresh you these names: William Kapell, John Browning, Gary Graffman. Lori Hollander, Byron Janis, Van Cliburn and Leon Fleisher, were notably influenced with this style. And please tell me who in a sensate state of mind, would be able to send to Europe his promising son or daughter where the flaming wrecks of the WW1 were in the air and the expected fears of a next confrontation was still to come.

Schnabel was a particular exception, since he was hired as Docent in USA, but its influence was relatively small. We should wait to the early Fifties to appreciate other styles and approaches; Gilels, Richter from USRR, Badura Skoda, Demus and Gulda from Austria, but still remained confined for dilettantes the renowned figures such as Edwin Fisher, Michelangeli, Myra Hess and Wilhelm Kempff.

His playing caused true furor during almost four decades. Horowitz now belongs to the legend.

5 out of 5 stars Mature Horowitz And The Best Liszt Sonetto 104.......2005-10-04

I have not much to add to the other reviews. Horowitz made some of his very best recordings when he was already more than 80 years old, and this 2CD (+DVD) set contains many of them, as well as the best recording of Liszt's Sonetto 104 that I know of, or am ever likely to hear.

      5 out of 5 stars Truly Magical.......2005-04-17

This album showcases the mighty Vladimir Horowitz in his last years. His life of music is definitive in these masterful interpretations. In these pieces, Mr. Horowitz displays many new ideas on some pieces that have been played, assumed successfully, continually in the same manner.

Two instances - Scriabin's Etude, Op. 8 No. 12 and Mozart's Rondo, K. 511. The maestro's entrance is softer and slower in the former, and in the latter, as stated in the studio chatter, he speeds up the tempo to make it less of a profound statement. It was Horowitz who chastised the new age of pianists on their attempts to play everything slow and prophetic. I believe it was Mr. Horowitz that told David Dubal "Only very few pieces are meant to be played slow" (after comparing performance times of major piano works from the early part of the 20th century to the later part, you will see the difference).

The DVD included in this package is wonderful, but for those who enjoy a more classic approach to the classical period - do not anticipate simple aural enjoyment. Do expect to see one of the greatest pianists ever work his magic at the piano. Do look forward to watching a master correct a mistake by another master. Do count on a memorable experience.

      5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2004-08-01

Horowitz is simply stunning, and this compilation is an absolute jewel. The added bonus of the DVD performance of Mozart's 23rd is the icing on the cake.

5 out of 5 stars The piano as an extension of consciousness.......2004-07-25

Mr. Drake has written the definitive review of this recording, but I want to add a few things.
In these recordings, the piano seems merely an extension of Horowitz's consciousness. The translation from his head and his heart to the piano is effortless, and filled with emotion. While listening to this CD, I understood that Horowitz's flawless technique stems not just from a complete knowledge of the pieces, but from his love of the music. He makes the music his own like no other.
This is inspirational music, played by the greatest master of his craft at the height of his powers.
An added bonus is the DVD which accompanies the 2 CD's, a video of the studio recording of Mozart's 23rd piano concerto. Horowitz, in his 80's, has the innocence of a child, playfully joking with the producer, the conductor, the page turner. When he plays, it is with a sense of joy that seems to accompany all of the recordings in this set.
The productions values here are excellent, typical Deutsche Grammophon.
      I'd give this recording a 10 if I could.

5 out of 5 stars And to all, a good night of music.......2005-10-16

Soon it will be the time for shops to be setting out their Christmas items, for while Christmas comes but once a year, in fact people are working toward it all year long. The same is true for composers and musical performers. I found it amusing to learn that this particular CD of Christmas-related organ music was performed in August of 1995; of course, to be prepared in time for the holiday season, it had to be done ahead of time. Not quite Christmas in July, but close!

This music was performed over the two days in August by Kevin Bower, at the organ in Chichester Cathedral in the United Kingdom. This is straight organ performing - no back choir or orchestral accompaniment. Bower is a nimble and spirited player, with a good sense of holiday mood for the pieces.

Some of the pieces are very classic Christmas pieces - Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus', set for organ solo, is a very familiar piece, as are J.S. Bach's sinfonia from the Christmas Oratorio and 'In dulci jubilo' (the later piece also has a setting by Johann Michael Bach). There are some more modern pieces, too, such as John Rutter's Prelude on 'God rest you merry, gentlemen' and W.S. Lloyd-Webber's Interlude on the Coventry Carol.

This is wonderful music, perfect for relaxing, listening to while preparing for holiday get-togethers, as background music during such get-togethers, or to reacquaint oneself with the music of the holiday season.

5 out of 5 stars Liszt the Devout.......2007-06-26

Volume 8 in Hyperion's Complete Piano Music of Liszt is somewhat of an anomaly. The presence of Liszt's Christmas Tree suite, a restrained collection of pieces composed for his granddaughter, and Liszt's own solo piano versions of his Chorales is not so strange. It's the inclusion of the awe-inspiring experimental choral work, the Via Crucis, which makes this recording a bipolar one. The contrast in both substance and mood between the Christmas Tree and Via Crucis should come as a shock when listening. As haunting and authentically religious as the choral version of Via Crucis is, this dark and dissonant work becomes doubly visceral in the piano's timbre.

But first the happy stuff. Liszt's Christmas Tree suite is an amiable and tantalizing collection of pieces. About half of these are based on famous Christmas carols. Liszt's treatment of these famous melodies is tasteful and a pure joy to hear. It wouldn't hurt radio stations or concerts to plays these pieces during the Christmas season once in a while; they are accessible, brilliant and totally evocative of the Holidays. Not all of these are mere paraphrases or works based on Christmas tunes, however. Liszt has also written his own original compositions and all of them are engaging. The Little Scherzo for "Lighting the Tree" and the Carillon or "Chimes" are whimsical and sweet. "Evening Bells" and especially "Old Times," apparently "a nostalgic remembrance of the first meeting between Liszt and Princess [Carolyne] Wittgenstein," are marvelous pieces of Romantic tenderness and melancholy. The most surprising gem of this suite is the unreserved "Polish" piece, marked by rapid dance rhythms and virtuosic surges of chromatic octaves; Liszt's granddaughter, Daniela, (Hans von Bulow's daughter) must have been a daredevil at the piano if she could play this!

Although the Weihnachtslied and Chorales make their appearance here as piano versions, they are not interesting enough to garner any important commentary, especially when a Liszt masterpiece, Via Crucis, has yet to be discussed. Liszt's Via Crucis is one of his most avant-garde and utterly incredible music experiments. Liszt's decision to write music to the Crucifixion of Jesus is daring enough. But his choice of mood and effect, completely morose and raw, is so explicit that the music sounds like nothing from the 19th century. Not surprisingly, Via Crucis "was rejected by a prominent firm of publishers of religious music... and was not in fact performed or published till more than forty years after [Liszt's] death." Typical of his late period, Liszt's exploration of darkness, dissonances, and pictorial effects presage all of impressionism and 20th century music.

From the violent and jarring first Station, "Jesus is condemned to death" to the bleak and terrible sounding Second Station "Jesus is made to carry his cross," Liszt creates a terrifying atmosphere of agony and grief. Additionally, I have yet to hear a better illustration of horrible pain and sorrow than found in all three Stations about Jesus falling while carrying the cross. According to Howard, "The eighth Station, The women of Jerusalem, is one of the most idiomatic musical descriptions of weeping in the whole literature." The three Stations depicting Jesus' deprivation of clothing, the nailing to the Cross, and his death are harrowing, brutal, but absolutely beautiful. Those new to this music will find some of the most unnerving and profound musical ideas from Liszt's pen. And those familiar with this work can expect the piano version to exhibit as much expressive power as the choral version. Humphrey Searle makes the following assertion about Via Crucis, that while the nature of the work is avant-garde, "the result is not a mere experiment, but a very deeply felt and moving work." I couldn't agree more.

Bottom line: Although this Volume contains the lovely Christmas Tree suite, it is with the world-premiere recording of the piano version of Via Crucis in mind that I give this Hyperion release 5 stars. This piano version of Via Crucis is easily on par with R.W. Venezia, Unstern Sinistre Disastro, and the La Lugubre Gondolas, Liszt's blackest works.

I wasn't familiar with any of this music upon purchasing it, but it doesn't matter. Again, Liszt touches upon emotions other composers seemed uncomfortable expressing, or weren't aware of. Masterful playing by Leslie Howard.

Harmonies Poétiques et religieuses, Franz Liszt's cycle of religiously inspired pieces, underwent numerous transformations before arriving at its definitive form, first published in 1853. It is in two sets, Searle catalog ## 154 and 173.

This Jerome Rose collection contains, along with the rarely heard Christmas Tree album (S 186,) the complete seven-piece S 173 (Second) set of HARMONIES POETIQUES ET RELIGIEUSES, which includes the popular Funérailles and, best of all, Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude.

Jerome Rose recorded the whole two collections for VOX, and it is a pity that only the second set is hereby available. Rose is not a notably colouristic or supple player, so that the iridescent and multi-silvered tone of a Jorge Bolet or even a Horowitz is not to be heard or expected here. What Rose has is enormous force and power, a truly titanic tone and grip at all speeds. That tone is occasionally rough around the edges (or is it the recording?) but never lacking in Lisztian grandeur. It is useless to compare him to a György Cziffra: that would be like comparing a huge overweight lion (Rose) to a sleek, fierce cheetah (Cziffra.) Rose also has a sense of sustained phrasing, so that, within his Mount Rushmore sense of things, he is quite a player; more celtic bard than Italian sonnet-writer perhaps, but a poet, too. His playing is very impressive, in an American sort of way. At any rate, of the alternatives (TWO anonymous English accountants on Hyperion, a Mad Englishman on Naxos and a dead Englishman also on VOX) Jerome Rose is the only way to avoid perfidious Albion.

Seriously: Philip Thomson on NAXOS would be my first recommendation for the whole collection of Harmonies, but I respect and have a great deal of affection for Louis Kentner and Jerome Rose, two artists of enormous probity, on VOX.

first the good news: I commend mr. rose for being such an ambitious Liszt artist, you get alot for your money on these cd's, these rather unpopular sets by Liszt should be essential in every music lovers library, and Rose should keep digging into more, less charted territory of Liszt.
Now the bad news, and there is plenty of it: His playing, especially of the "harmonies", has absolutally no direction, no colour, and is quite boring. Although they should be blended together, he tends to favor clarity over charactor, and personally, i listen to Liszt to be emotionally moved, rather then academically satisfied. I understand he is trying to go for the "meditative" approach to these sacred works, but the music tends to sit more then flow, and I was instantly turned off at the first listen, in perticular, his invocation. Liszt does not always have to be virtuosic, but should at least have life, and lyrical life is what was missing in his "benediction" and "andante largimoso". I couldnt help but beg to hear someone of the likes of Cziffra and put up with his overdrive, or a non liszt specialist such as Brendel, rather then listen to rose's dead interpretations. Its amazing this guy "captivated" audiences in the Busoni competition. His consolations were better, but lacked melodic direction (but lets face it, who can beat Horowitz playing the E major?) and his Christmas Tree was average at best. (It were those tracks that made me realize this guy actually does have some sort of musical personality) Always an enigma, the legends take a good performer to play with outstanding effect. Rose plays to slow and if I didnt know what each piece was about, i wouldnt have had the first clue by his non discriptive playing. These 2 numbers are played best when the performer does not give into Liszt's bombastic overtones, however i was hoping Rose would somewhat "let loose" at some point, i was just bored. St. Francois was truely drowning rather then walking.
Devoted Liszt fans: buy this one only for the content and use it as a resource, considering the amount you get, its a fair price, but expect it to sit on the shelf for good after a first listen.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A great compilation.......2004-04-25

Ever since I got a disc of Alfred Brendel playing Beethoven's favourite piano sonatas, I've had a special attention for his recordings and his view on music. To me, he is one of the best examples of a perfectionist. Lazy listeners call his way of playing pedantic but that is completely untrue. Listen more closely to any of is recordings and you'll hear an endless variety of colours, the most shimmering nuances and above all, tremendous warmth. But he is certainly not a perfectionist in the negative sense that is sometimes attached to the word: aside from being imposingly musical, his performances always have a great feeling of 'humanity'. There are many other great performers of the German repertoire (from Haydn to Brahms) but Brendel's recordings have a special familiarity to me, and he gives more than anyone else the feeling to me that the composer's genuine thoughts are present in the performance.

Brendel has a very special tone that accustoms itself very well to many different kinds of pieces. One of the essays in this great set deals with the many different sounds Brendel can create at the piano, something that intrigues me very much too. It is fascinating to hear how he touches the keys in his Mozart and Haydn recordings: here, he gets a sound out of the grand piano that sounds almost like the ancient fortepiano. Combined with his sharp and almost biting playing, he preserves some of the spirit of the time in which the works were composed, but combines this with the much richer and detailed sound of a modern instrument. Haydn's sonatas sparkle and so do Mozart's concertos.

In his Beethoven recordings, which are very well represented in this set, Brendel uses a somewhat similar style, but adapts more to the Beethovenian sound world: his tone is still aggressive but a little mellower and greater. He focuses a lot on small details and plays with a rather gentle sound in the variations, while his Hammerklavier doesn't avoid the grand gesture. The Piano concertos with Levine are full of joy and superbly crisp. Beethoven's works can be performed in a more massive or sweeter way, but that's what other recordings are for.

Brendel's Schubert is very notable for its total avoidance of the sweet and precious image of the composer that has settled somehow. Here, Schubert is presented as an ultimately dark and despairing composer, an image that is very appropriate regarding his general output. While Brendel sometimes tends to calm a bit of the hysteria in pieces like Beethoven's Appassionata, in Schubert he mainly emphasizes it. Hear how he attacks the Wanderer Fantasy, especially in the last minutes. Or how severely he gets the A minor sonata D784 to its throat. This is essentially the way I think Schubert should always sound.

It will be surprising for some to notice how much of Liszt has been recorded by Brendel, and also to hear how they sound. The Liszt recordings in this set show the composer from his most intellectual and imposing side. Brendel may generate an enormous sound that not everyone will associate with him from "Orage" in the Années de Pelerinage, but it is impressive rather than showy. Similarly, the Sonata receives the most detailed and complete performance I've heard, the Piano Concertos are simply stunning on all accounts and the variations on a Bach cantata show both the composer and the performer at their very best. It may be surprising to hear but I think you won't hear any better Liszt than this.

Finally there's a box dedicated to Brahms and Schumann. Brahms is another surprise. Brendel's D minor Concerto is one of the most impressive readings I've heard, close to Serkin/Szell, and his B flat is fine too, if a bit less impressive. His playing style here somewhat resembles that of his Liszt: it is rich, grand and always commanding. Few performers are as well able as Brendel is to match the endlessly complex musical thread of these two concertos. The fourth Ballade op.10 settles among the best readings - Kempff, Arrau, you name them. The Schumann pieces are performed in a way resembling Beethoven's smaller works: they create the same familiar living-room image, and it gets even more beautiful when oboist Heinz Holliger joins him to play a few folksong-like pieces. The set closes with a wonderful Schumann fantasy.

The track listing say that there's a bonus disc included as well, containing Brendel's first recording of Liszt's Christmas Tree suite, but my own set did actually not contain this bonus disc. With or without that disc, this is a set any piano aficionado should not miss. The only drawback can be the price, which is pretty high (not surprising with such a huge set)--if you can find it at all, now that the set seems to be OOP. At any cost, this is one the best box sets I own. If contains a thorough look at one of the most profound and intellectual artists of recent time and gives endless enjoyment.

        5 out of 5 stars Liszt.......2001-05-11

I recently purchased the boxed set of just the Liszt items from The Art of Alfred Brendel. I learned to love Schubert piano music by listening to Brendel, but Liszt was something of an exploration. And what a guide to take you on the journey! If you get the opportunity to get the Liszt set don't turn it up in preference to the more respected composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert etc.

        5 out of 5 stars Incomparable Brendel.......2000-12-29

I wish to focus on the works of Liszt included in this gargantuan package. Brendel is held in universal esteem, regarded by many as the greatest living pianist. His reputation is of unimpeachable musicality and seriousness of purpose (which does not contradict his ability to find musical humor wherever it lurks). He shows unparalleled ability to get to the musical core of the "Great Repertory" (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms); his performances leave mere pianism far behind. His championing of Liszt's music is especially important for just this reason. Liszt is too often accused of flashy superficiality. Nobody can accuse Brendel of this fault. And his Liszt recordings are among the most intellectual and probing, yet most moving, of any. He reveals Liszt as a daring and supremely important master. The pyrotechnics of the piano concerti are invested with real meaning, and the utterly spare, laconic late pieces become profound meditations on the human condition. His readings of Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude and of the Variations on Bach's "Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" make one grateful for the very existence of music -- and for the capacity to capture it for posterity in recordings.

        5 out of 5 stars Beutiful.......2000-04-05

This is beutiful music. I have played some of his pieces on my flute and they are absoultly gorgeous. If you are a true classical music lover then you must buy this and have many nights by the fire with this wonderful music in the backround.

            Album Description

International harpist Dominique Piana has toured extensively throughout the United States. In the pursuit of a multifaceted career of performing, teaching, recording and writing, Ms. Piana endeavors to communicate the life-transforming power of music to audiences from all walks of life.

Born in Belgium into a family of German background, Ms. Piana grew up in the French-speaking part of Brussels and was educated in the humanities, with an emphasis on classical languages. She studied piano throughout childhood at various Music Academies and turned to the harp just before entering the Royal Conservatory of Music, in the studio of Francette Bartholomee. She also commuted to Paris to study with Frederique Cambreling.

In 1980, at the invitation of master teacher Susan McDonald, Ms. Piana moved to the USA. She earned a Master of Arts degree from the Claremont Graduate University in California. Thereupon she served as Adjunct Professor of Harp at the University of Redlands and La Sierra University in Riverside until the summer of 2001. Throughout the years she has experimented with various creative approaches such as Music and Movement, applying them to the complexities of the harp in pedagogy and performance.

As a solo performer, Ms. Piana has made a specialty of historical recitals. The Romantic Spirit, a unique program of 19th century music and poetry, has been shaped by years of research into the harp and piano literature, matching feelings and ideas, musical substance and idiomatic writing. Her children's presentation The Poet's Harp unveils the magical tricks of this intriguing mechanical marvel with fanciful imagery.

In her ensemble work, Ms. Piana has experimented with numerous sound combinations and styles, partnering with flute, organ and various string combinations. She founded and conducted the Inland Empire Harp Ensemble in many Southern California appearances. She has explored the fascinating Sephardic tradition with cantor Gregory Yaroslow. She founded Duo Appassionata with violinist Sherry Kloss, whose distinctive "singing" style reflects the influence of her close association with Jascha Heifetz.

Ms. Piana introduced the Concerto for Harp by the Belgian composer Joseph Jongen to Southern California audiences with five performances during the 1991-92 season. She has unearthed many less known musical gems awaiting a fresh hearing.

She served as Program Chair for the 1992 National Conference of the American Harp Society. She has been listed in the International Who's Who in Music since 1990 and is on the touring roster of the California Arts Council.
