The Habsburg imperial court in Vienna was one of the grandest and wealthiest in 17th-century Europe--and it had appropriately grand music. These Yorkshire musicians have made a speculative re-creation of the elaborate mass (with multiple choirs, brass, and organs in post-Gabrieli style) that was celebrated in Vienna upon the signing of the Treaty of Westphalia (which ended the Thirty Years' War) in 1648. Don't look for subtlety here: while there are brief moments of (relatively) gentle writing for solo voices, the point of this music is to make a joyful noise--a big one. Peter Seymour and his musicians do this splendidly. --Matthew Westphal
