This is an astonishing collection of works - or parts of works - by Mozart that covers almost every aspect of his creative output: symphonic, religious music, concerti (for piano, horn, violin, clarinet, flute), chamber music, serenades (for strings; winds), a couple of opera overtures and more. Those who know and love Mozart's music will not need this, but it's a great introduction, a great overview. The selections are well-chosen and interestingly organized, with familiar pieces splrinkled among some not-so well known. A good primer. --Robert Levine

1 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong with Mozart?...Buy this and find out........2007-05-13

I was extraordinarely ignorant when I purchased this recording. I thought,"WOW!! Look at all the music you get in this CD set. The price cannot be beat!" When I received the CD, I discovered that you don't really get any music at all. This is a great sample CD, and should be bought by a person brand new to classical music. However, if you have any experience with classical music, you will want to pass on this CD.

Each of the pieces are hacked apart to the point of it being comical. It's interesting to listen to the greatest music in the world, only to have the development cut. All of a sudden I was thrust into a new key, I thought my ears were going crazy. Perhaps an effort by a decent high school orchestra, but this music is not up to snuff with any other recording.

Do yourself a favor and go out and purchase real recordings of Mozart, and not watered down stereotypes.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Mozart selection - Nice price.......2006-09-24

Nice selection of Mozart work that give us inner peace...

4 out of 5 stars Mozart Listener.......2006-08-31

This is a good CD if you like Mozart's music. It is not the best CD I ever purchased. It is nice to listen to it in the morning before I go to work. And I sometimes listen to it in the evening before I go to bed. It is relaxing and soothing. I am not a music major or therapist. This is the best review I can write. Mary Agnes Cross

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Gorgeous music, bad quality cd........2007-04-13

The music is Mozart's and is fantastic. The last piece on the first disc
stutters halfway through, and seizes up my system. I don't have time to return items to Amazon. On the positive side, most of the time Amazon provides quality products and service. I gave 3 stars because I love the music.

3 out of 5 stars Great music, low quality reproduction.......2007-01-30

this is a great collection of his work... the only problem i have found so far is that my copy has irritating "clicks" over the recording.

5 out of 5 stars A nice introduction.......2006-02-22

This is a good well rounded collection to dip you into the classical world of Mozart.

5 out of 5 stars Mozart is the reference point for good classical music........2005-10-20

A good collection of his best work and I find it helps me focus when I'm writing or contempating life.

"We exposed these animals [rats] in utero and then sixty days after birth to different types of auditory stimulation and then we ran them in a spatial maze. And sure enough, the animals that were exposed to the Mozart completed the maze faster and with fewer errors. And now what we're doing is we're removing their brains so we can slice them and see neuro-anatomically precisely what has changed as a function of this exposure. So it may be that this intense exposure to the music is a type of enrichment that has similar effects on the spatial areas of the hippocampus of the brain." --Dr. Frances Rauscher

Dr. Frances Rausher sums up what I feel happening when I expose myself to this incredible composer (Mozart).

I have yet to grow tired of any of the tracks yet, but I will invest in more of his work soon.

4 out of 5 stars Mozart's music.......2005-10-17

This is a review of Mozart's music, not the cd. Mozart is praised to the skies by all and sundry, including most musicians, including my father, who no doubt has his reasons. But my feeling about Mozart has always been that there is nothing in Mozart's music that is other than music. There is no logical impressionism, there are no events that seem to be transpiring as in, for example, Beethoven. Mozart is just music. Mozart is to music as pure mathematics is to science. It hints of nothing else and has no application. I find some of his music irritatingly trivial, for example, Eine Kleine Nachtmuzic. This is mechanical music that one can imagine being piped in by a totalitarian government that insists everyone be cheerful. If Disneyland was an eighteenth century totalitarian state, Mozart would be its Muzak. The populace would be awakened, like Chinese train passengers, at 6AM by the strains of some allegro. They would arise and busy themselves with their ablutions in a state of thoughtless cheer, never for one moment leaving the surface of things. That being said, the second movement of Mozart's clarinette concerto is the music that one will hear on going into heaven.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection.......2007-04-11

As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

4 out of 5 stars Celebrate Mozart's 250th at a Budget Price.......2006-01-11

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

This compilation of previous releases is clearly intended to include something for everybody and to offer an overview of Kathleen Battle's wide, varied repertoire. The result is a motley assortment of music sacred and profane, Baroque, classical and romantic, Spanish and American folksongs, and jazz. It is Battle's radiant, impeccably produced voice, which sheds a glow over every note she sings, and her effortless coloratura and serene expressiveness that provide the unifying, and most rewarding, element.

Four new recordings sound just as glorious as those she made years ago. One is the famous aria from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi performed with piano--a strange misfit among all the arias with orchestra. Wynton Marsalis plays Bach and Handel brilliantly, but sounds too loud and prominent. And despite some baroque ornamentation, he plays in a style so different from hers that the two hardly seem to be performing the same piece. The Orchestra of St. Luke's plays beautifully; an anonymous orchestra under Robert Sadin is competent but too matter-of-fact. A mournful, repetitive duet with Jessye Norman against a background of unearthly noises from Vangelis's Mythodea sounds like an angelic plea for mercy.

In the finale of Mahler's Fourth Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic under Lorin Maazel, Battle captures just the right blend of childlike wonder and heavenly bliss. Of the jazz numbers, one by Duke Ellington is lovely, but Dvorák would have been quite surprised by the arrangement of the Largo from his "New World" Symphony. However, the tonality is right, and Battle sings the melody so beautifully that she almost redeems it. --Edith Eisler

3 out of 5 stars Eh..........2006-12-10

Kathleen Battle is admirable, with her many recordings and her many performances across the country. But, I cannot say that I adore her voice. Yes, she may be a soprano, but her voice is not top of my list. Her technique is flawed, and her voice lacks any depth or richness. When I listen to her voice, it sounds so empty. Singers like Sumi Jo (my favorite of all) or Renee Fleming are a much better choice when it comes to rich tone and beautiful technique.

5 out of 5 stars The vocal phenomenon that is Kathleen Battle.......2003-11-18

An excellent compilation of some of Miss Battle's greatest work. Of course, it would have been great if more of her operatic literature was included, but to have the opportunity to hear anything from Miss Battle is heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Bravissima Diva!!!!.......2002-07-03

I must comment on the preceeding review which has nothing to do with the calibur of this CD nor of the artist. And just a touch on that whole Brevard "incident", there were two performances one of which came off without a fault...but I too digress. This CD is a plethera of what endures Kathleen Battle to us all...her diversity. It is true that none of her signature operatic roles appear in this mini compilation but what is given more than accomodates. In 18 selections she covers Spirituals, Oratorio, Jazz, Afro-Cuban/Brazilian influenced melodies, cantata's and a symphony all with miraculous ease. It is also true that this is in many ways a best of...and chances are you'll already have most of these pieces, but Classic Kathleen Battle is Worth Buying simply for the four new selections and accompanying art of the set. The pictorial art included in this CD is worthy of gallery display! A standing testament of her vocal beauty and artist superlatives...this is a CD that you don't want to pass up!

1 out of 5 stars Battle shows her true colors yet again.......2002-06-27

I have followed Ms. Battle's career for a number of years and have always loved the clarity and purity of her voice--no doubt she is a tremendous talent. Several years ago I saw her give a stunning concert at UNC-Chapel Hill and was blown away at the thrill of finally experiencing her voice live. I always thought it unfortunate that so many negative stories about her flourished and subsequently found myself coming to her defense in conversation with others. Last summer I had tickets to see her sing at Brevard Music Center in the mountains of North Carolina. Several nights prior to this performance, my 20-year-old nephew was killed in a car accident. I decided to go ahead with my plans and attend the concert, thinking it would be a sort of balm for my soul after living through this terrible experience of losing someone I loved. Immediately after my nephew's funeral I left my family behind and drove the five hours to the concert venue. Needless to say I had incredibly high hopes for this concert and its potential to help heal my wounds. Long story short, Ms. Battle behaved in the most unprofessional manner I have ever witnessed and refused to perform the program as planned. What little she did offer to the audience was mediocre at best. A packed house of patrons was left stunned and dismayed at what they'd just witnessed. So, Ms. Battle, you proved to me in a very personal way that all the stories are true and you have serious issues. I will not be buying your recordings in the future and I currently have about 20 that are now worthless to me.

4 out of 5 stars Praiseworthy, but a limited perspective.......2002-06-04

CLASSIC KATHLEEN BATTLE: A PORTRAIT is limited in its perspective in the sense that this is a compilation of only SONY Classical recordings from their catalog. There are no Deutsche Grammophon or Angel/EMI performances represented here. A "portrait" of Miss Battle would have rightly included some of these wonderful and musical interpretations of Mozart, Schubert, Villa-Lobos, Gounod, and Bach among others. Of course paying the license fees from the other 2 labels wouldn't be cost-efficient from a record company's standpoint. How wonderful this would've been if they'd all cooperated on a box set of her recordings, which would show Miss Battle's superlative musicality in not only Italian and French, but also her great wit and charm in the English language (her Purcell and Dowland are not to be missed!)

In any case there are several magical performances to be found here:

Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro" w/piano; Dormi, Jesu; Cancion de Cuna, Fix Me Jesus, Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss"; Angels Watching Over Me; and the enchanting song (the German title is too long for me to remember--it's from the Das Knaben Wunderhorn cycle) from Mahler's 4th Symphony.

For any Kathleen Battle fan, this is a nice selection of her works, but only a 2-dimensional portrait at best. Certainly not Miss Battle's fault, as she graces the listener with no less than FOUR new recordings on this album.

Once again her silvery tones and superb musicality are a wonderful gift to us!

Thank you, and Bravo many times over....

5 out of 5 stars It is a great CD.......2001-03-22

I get this item and I can say is great, if you really want to get an idea about the vienna boys choir's work, you have to get this, you can admire the soloist voice, Emanuel Cencic, he has an outstanding voice, principally the track "let the bright querubin" but in general is a great compilation, you can stop listening.

3 out of 5 stars Found it to lack real depth.......2000-01-12

The songs are nice and the music pleasant to listen to, but the titles are fairly short and there is something missing. I just didn't find it to be very moving, perhaps it's just the recording.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Spine tingling.......2005-03-15

This album is really about one thing to me - Ingrid Kertesi's version of Ave Maria. This is possibly the closest thing to perfection I have ever heard in music. Words will never explain true art so I won't try. I defy anybody to listen to this and not be moved by it's incredible force. Truly inspirational !!

5 out of 5 stars Physic for the Psyche.......2004-10-24

I bought this CD for one track--Schubert's Ave Maria. I have searched through hundreds of Ave Maria albums for the perfect Ave Maria and, though this version is not perfect, it is the closest I have heard to perfection. Ingrid Kertesi's voice bathes you in the song's rich, warm, red sea of love that is so restorative, you can't help but feel pure and whole after one listening--though, I guarantee you won't be able to listen just once.

I only wish Naxos had chosen to record it with a piano instead of a full orchestra--Naxos's budget orchestras have a budget sound, and besides, this song has an intimacy that resonates best with a simple dialogue between a soprano and a piano. How many music directors have gone wrong by using a soprano and an orchestra, a tenor and an orchestra, or a tenor and a piano. No, no, no! Schubert's Ave Maria = Soprano and Piano, and it better be a damn good soprano, or don't bother recording at all. Really.

I didn't care about any of the other tracks on the CD--and about half are throw-aways. But the Ombra mai fu, the Lascia ch'io pianga, the Mozart masses, and the Donizetti and Gounod Aves (also sung by Kertesi) are all first rate.

Bottom line: the bad tracks are bad, but the beautiful tracks are ecstatic and full of heart and passion. Do your soul a favor and listen.

5 out of 5 stars You'll adore the angelic Ingrid Kertesi's dulcet tones.......2004-07-22

Ingrid Kertesi really does have the voice of an angel. As an ex-choirboy, I have an inherent preference for the pure tones of a boy treble, rather than the mature vibrato warbling of most sopranos. But I bought this disc because the review by Mr. JB from Karlskrona, Sweden (June 18, 2000) grabbed my attention. He is 100 percent right: I defy you to listen to Ingrid Kertesi's version of J.S. Bach's "Bist du bei mir" ("Thou Art So Near") and not have the same ecstatic reaction he did. The same applies to that most hackneyed of works, the "Ave Maria" that Charles Gounod added atop Bach's C-major Prelude from the "48 Preludes and Fugues" ("The Well-Tempered Klavier"). Kertesi's exquisite version makes this old warhorse sound fresh and new again. It's sure either to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up or have you falling to the floor in sheer ecstasy. OK, forgive the hyperbole, but listen to the sample online and you'll get the point. The rest of the disc has humdrum versions of some very familiar pieces by Handel, Mozart and Schubert. But it's truly worth having for Kertesi's incomparable contribution.

4 out of 5 stars The voice of heaven is the voice of Ingrid Kertesi.......2000-06-19

The reason that I bought this record was that as I was walking around in a record store I suddenly heard a heavenly voice, singing a wonderful song. It was so capturing that I had to go ask the staff for the CD. I must say I was deeply surprised when I found out it was a Naxos recording, since their song-CD's sometimes tend to be not so good. But this one is a real bargain.

The song was "Bist du bei mir" by Bach (Stötzel), and the singer was the totally unknown Ingrid Kertesi. This was almost a year ago, but I still think I get a new glimpse of heaven every time that I listen to her. The beauty of her voice makes you forget that her pronunciation is extremely bad (as with Sutherland in her prime). Kertesi sings a few more songs on this CD, and they're all lovely.

Many of the classic christmas & sacred songs are included on this CD, we find three 'Ave Maria' here. Most of the songs are nicely sung, except for some Mozartpieces. The other singers are not in the same class as Kertesi, but mostly OK.

This is a extremely nice compilation for christmas or any other time when it's dark outside. Ingrid Kertesi alone makes this CD worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars The real thing.......2002-05-15

I was reluctant to buy this recording because the title and the underlying concept seemed commercial, superficial, and hokey. But these are genuinely fine performances of great works. Whoever put this together did it right. I recommend it without reservation.

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?.......2001-12-22

I bought this CD based on the three previous reviews and the fact that I like beautiful choral music. But I found Tears from Heaven dreadfully dull and uninspiring. There were perhaps three tracks that I enjoyed listening to. So here you have another opinion.

5 out of 5 stars If This is What Heaven Sounds Like ..........2000-04-14

then I can't wait to get there ! Out of my extensive music collection this is the album that gets played on a daily basis. It is not often one can say that every track is pure pleasure to listen to; but it is the case with Tears from Heaven (and the second CD in the album - Voices from Heaven). This album has to be heard to be believed. For variety, musicality and recording clarity this is is truely a divine collection. I highly recommend it !

    4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Hymn.......2005-09-29

I got this CD as a gift and I have to say, seeing "Andrea Bocelli" in my iTunes is a strange feeling, but this album does what it is supposed to do, and I really liked the whole thing. Commissioned for Pope John Paul II, who came to Paris in August 1997 to celebrate an open air mass as a part of the International Day of Youth, this is a collection of sacred music from Baroque to the modern era. The progression is roughly chronological, but the flow of moods and styles works great. The chorus of Santa Cecilia National Academy is totally on, the orchestra, conducted by Myung-Whun Chung, enthusiastically joins in, and the two soloists are a strange pair, but they both put in a great performance.
The opening choral movement from Vivaldi's Gloria is fast- not as furiously fast as Rinaldo Alessandrini's take on Gloria, but really fast and energetic. Then Cecilia Bartoli comes in and serves up a killer Domine Deus from the same Gloria- beautiful, just beautiful! No tricks, just glorious singing and great oboe obligato to boot. Then you get nicely done Jesus bleibet meine Freude by Bach and some Mozart: moving Ave Verum, and ecstatic Alleluia from Exsultate, jubilate, sung by supercharged Cecilia. Another Ave Verum and Qui seminant by List and a well done Sanctus from Verdi's Requiem, plus Rossini and Vitali round up Phase One of this album, and set the stage for piece de résistance: Bizet's Agnus Dei, sung by - Andrea Bocelli.
I have no strong feelings about Bocelli, his attempts to sing opera or his crazed fandom which apparently felt this CD was a rip off because it didn't have enough of Divine Andrea singing and wasn't sexy enough- ??? - and all I can say is: he is very good in this piece, closely miked, straight up and quite moving. And, followed by Panis Angelicus, sung by Truly Divine Cecilia- she is too good! Beautiful singing, bordering on ravishing. I had no idea that she could sing a simple piece, without any aspirated heeheehoohoo coloratura, and sound so great.
Serene In Paradisum from Faure's Requiem, a piece by Messiaen and a Rite Of Peace prayer, read by Pope John Paul II, end the album.
The sound is not so great, and it is a live recording, so there are a few rough spots, but it's a very surprising delight, 100% sacred- JPII says so!- and well worth getting your hands on. And if you need more: there is a happy sequel, too, Hymn for the World II and Bryn Terfel joins the ranks of singers.

    5 out of 5 stars A Timeline of God-Inspired Masterworks.......2003-11-08

Yes, Andrea Bocelli and Cecilia Bartoli, the tenor and mezzo of the moment, are used sparingly on this CD. Their popularity is rather shamelessly used to promote this music, and their voices aren't much heard.

I don't care! I like the disc's concept: A timeline of spiritually inspired masterworks moving roughly from earliest to latest. "A Hymn to the World" opens appropriately enough with Vivaldi's jubilant ornate Glorias. It passes out of the Baroque period into the Classical for Bach's famous "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." Next comes the Romantic Period, represented by a pair of Liszt compositions. This is followed by the work of composers whose fame rests on opera but are capable of much more: a slice of Verdi's renowned "Requiem" (Mass for the dead) and Rossini's touching "Stabat Mater" (scene of Mary at Christ's cross).

The grandeur of a Gounod march and the tunefulness of Bizet's "Agnus Dei" come next, the latter featuring the warm buttery voice of Bocelli. And Bartoli wraps her famous mezzo around another liturgical piece, the plaintive "Panis Angelicus." Both are highlights, but the disc does not need famous voices to shine.

It closes by whisking us into the 20th century. The final portion of Faure's Requiem, called "In Paradisium," unfolds with all its warm layered lushness. This sampling lead me to the entire Faure Requiem, now one of my favorite works. I must say it's even better to build to "In Paradisium" than hear it in isolation, since it resolves the tension and brightens the darkness of the preceding sections. Its sweetness, I think, has to be earned! Faure himself called his composition a "lullaby of death." Finally, there is Messiaen's "O Sacrum Convivium" which depicts sacred experience as a nu-Gregorian gang vocal in clear simple plainsong. It concludes the journey far from the Baroque flourishes of where it began.

It's a journey worth taking, an excellent tour for the person new to classical and/or sacred music and a solid addition to the collection of the regular classical listener.

5 out of 5 stars Great music for a beautiful event.......2001-11-15

Enjoy this beautiful music performed by wonderful
musicians at an extraordinary event. Per liner notes,
"the visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul II to
Paris in August 1997, to celebrate an open-air Mass
as part of the Worldwide Days of Youth." You can put
yourself there while listening to these selections
that celebrate life. A surprise benediction touched
    me.

    4 out of 5 stars It's music, not Hollywood.......2000-10-27

Ok everyone... Get over it, Bocelli and Bartoli only sing 4 of 16 selections. Is it just me, or has everyone lost their mind when trying to review this album!? This is absolutely beautiful music written by brilliant composers and performed extremely well by very well-accomplished musicians. Those of you who feel robbed by the lack of feature soloists obviously haven't experienced the pure joy and ecstacy a good chorale piece can bring because you've automatically closed your minds to the no-names who perform in this album. They are all wonderful musicians, and as such they deserve an enormous amount of credit. Take it from me, these people don't practice a half hour a day. If anyone has experienced life in a conservatory or music school, you'd know these people are practicing upwards of 4-5 hours a day. It makes me sick that people can no longer appreciate the purity of music as it has always been and still is today. Obviously they don't perform with absolute perfection (no one ever has... even Horowitz), but Chung did a fabulous job getting an absolutely gorgeous sound out of the choir which isn't exactly an easy task! Overall, very good album. As a final note: if you must, throw away the CD case documentation to get the picture of Bocelli, Chung, and Bartoli out of your mind. Just sit back and enjoy the clarity of tone and fabulous musicality of the entire album. Allow yourselves to fall in love with the music. Without that passion, there is no way any performer would have made it in the world, and you wouldn't be able to listen to such beautiful music.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry, this is not for me........2000-08-04

I don't even want to get THIS! Sexy Andrea Bocelli only has ONE song on the whole CD: Georges Bizet's "Agnus Dei."

My recommendation: Get any of Andrea Bocelli's SOLO recordings, like "Romanza," "Verdi," etc. But NOT THIS, please.....

This 1978 reading of Mozart's glorious Requiem has lost none of its luster. Carlo Maria Giulini refuses to approach the work as a romantic blood-and-thunder event (unlike, say Karajan's 1975 account); rather, his approach is classical, devotional, and transparent--time and again one hears the orchestra's inner voices more clearly than usual. This Requiem "sings" like few others, and while it is highly meditative, its drama, from section to section, is never lost. Bass Robert Lloyd is particularly good, coming through with a "Tuba mirum" in which he challenges the sound of the trombone. The other soloists are good. As a bonus, EMI has given us a chirpy, agile performance of Mozart's Exultate Jubilate, with Erika Koth, a light soprano whose repertoire included the Queen of the Night. A fine disc. --Robert Levine

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A broad, devotional reading that could use more life.......2006-07-09

The Amazon reviewer believes that Giulini isn't romantic in the Mozart Requiem, which I find astonishing. This reading is the essence of romantic earnestness, religiosity, and pious devotion. Oh well. One's reaction to Giulini's broad tempos and chruch-like solemnity will depend on personal taste. I think even a reverent reading needs inner life, vital rhythms, and strong structure.

Giulini doesn't supply them. This is very soft-grained musicmaking, and even though the vocal quartet includes fine singers, the conducting hampers them with tempos slower than molasses in winter. In sum, this 1978 recording could have been made in a German cathdral in 1878. It sounds lugurbrious and dated.

    4 out of 5 stars Mozart's Requiem.......2005-08-27

I have heard so much about the Requiem over the years that I decided to pick it up and give it a listen.

It is a beautiful piece of music and I would recommend it to anyone who likes classical music and/or Mozart.

The sound quality is pretty good, there are a few parts where the music is very bass-ey and my speakers can't pick up the low notes so well. Also, the lyrics are sometimes difficult to understand (I know they're in Latin but you still can't make out all the words).

I wasn't loving the final 14 minute song (Exsultate Jubilate) which is not part of the Requiem but seems added as an afterthought. But it is slowly growing on me.

I would like to hear the Requiem by Berlioz next and I hear that Verde's is good also. They are more in the style of Mozart where the later versions of Requiem have some of the more intense 'fire and brimstone' movements reduced or taken out altogether.

Overall, this is a good version and very affordable if you are on the fence about picking it up. A good value for the money.

5 out of 5 stars An Immortal Conclusion.......2004-07-09

The success of the 1983 film *Amadeus* - its overwhelming critical and public acclaim, its host of well-deserved Oscars - has come with an unfortunate consequence. The re-invention pathos of Milos Foreman and his screenwriters muddled the general mass-conscious knowledge of Wolfgang Mozart's untimely passing, turned myth into popular legend. Indeed, even I must admit that the drama of *Amadeus* is so powerful...so ironically _poignant_...that the inner aesthete shies away from adaptation-combat, from discerning the truth from the fiction. The climatic scene of a glory-hungry Antoni Salieri perched over the bedridden Mozart, draining the maestro of every last drop of genius as one would squeeze the juice from a lemon, certainly remains an iconic image, masterfully capping the film's character-arcs and overall theme. It's a great fabrication. Yet the actual facts surrounding the matter are just as fascinating, albeit in a more ruefully amusing and ultimately tragic manner. Mozart did receive a commission for a requiem mass in the summer of 1791; the patron demanded discretion and warned that any efforts to uncover his identity would be futile - with good reason. The patron, a one Count Walsegg, had for some time amassed an oeuvre of compositions from the famed names of the day: the unscrupulous knave would subsequently perform them as his own material at his private concerts. Mozart's requiem was intended for the Count's departed wife, yet in the end, fate decreed that it would instead sing the soul of its composer to the Great Expanse beyond Terra Firma: it would become the crest and culmination of Mozart's astounding life-opus.

Mozart seemed infused with premonitions while composing the piece: as he told his wife Costanza, ''[it is my] masterpiece and swan song.'' An attack of acute rheumatic fever confirmed this presentiment, and Mozart died some four months after receiving Count Walsegg's anonymous commission. Although the sudden descent from health to death was not uncommon in that era, Mozart's prominence and reputation instantly stimulated conspiracy theorists to ply their paranoia. The poison rumor emerged a mere week from his passing, though Salieri would not receive credit for several decades to come. Even the exquisite irony of the burial - that one of history's greatest musical geniuses was tossed into a pauper's grave, scorned and forgotten - is unsubstantiated. Mozart did not enjoy the prestige of his contemporaries during his life, but many expressed dismay at his passing, including no less a peer as Joseph Hadyn; more importantly, Mozart's music has survived, and thrived, the passage of two centuries - his craft has achieved a posthumous _influence,_ to be admired and envied by any self-respecting artist. And I think little Wolfgang would wish for nothing less.

Experts acknowledge Requiem as the most ambitious of Mozart's church compositions, and a masterpiece of contrapuntal writing. Even though he did not live to complete the piece, the framework sketches Mozart left behind aided his pupil, Xaver Sussmayr, in filling in the gaps and finishing the last three movements. It is to Xaver's credit that the hand of master is blended seamlessly with amateur mimicry: the power of the piece is in no way diminished by its haphazard completion: indeed, this is an immortal conclusion, a Requiem for a genius.

The first few bars of the mass drift with melancholic resignation before a powerful dirge-like chorus sunders the mood; 'Kyrie' maintains the tension with rapid tempi and shimmering vocal crescendos, building up to the hair-raising climax of 'Dies irae.' I've heard this particular piece cribbed many times for television and film (a powerful public-domain mood-enhancer), X-men 2 being a recent example. The next several movements recap and build upon established themes, alternating slow and fast tempi: of notable power is the 'Confutatis,' with its interplay of serene choral and roaring retort, and the 'Lacrimosa,' which swells into a mighty, tear-inducing denouement (no hyperbole here - truly, an evocative piece). It is strange to think that Mozart may not have touched *Requiem's* concluding three pieces whatsoever, and that Sussmayr simply composed them from fragmentary notes and remembered conversations; regardless, they culminate the previous themes/variations without a discernable quality shift. *Requiem* concludes with 'Lux aeterna,' a more vigorous recap of the 'Kyrie.' Also included on this CD is the *Exsultate Jubilate,* an interesting contrast-piece to the brooding *Requiem.* Written in 1772 when Mozart was all of sixteen, it displays the cheerfulness and curious innocence that characterized much of his early work.

This particular *Requiem* was conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini and performed by the Berlin Philharmonic in 1979. Although not in the class of Sir Neville Marriner's Requiem - it almost sounds _lethargic_ in comparison to the incredible, fire-drunk recording featured on the *Amadeus* soundtrack - this is still a fine version in and of itself, and a great value to the budget shopper. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent performance of a classic piece.......2002-12-04

I originally picked up this CD based on a friends recommendation. The first three opening pieces are excellent and very moving. I love listening to this CD and recommend it to anyone looking for an excellent recording and performance of this piece.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely the BEST Recording.......2002-06-15

Aside from being such a powerful peice in it of itself, this recording makes use of the requiem's nature, which is a funeral mass. Balatsch (chorus-master) and Giulini (orchestra conductor) create such dramatic dynamics that it actually seems like the chorus and orchestra are crying to the heavens.

The Kyrie Eleison, for example, can be heard on other recordings as very meccanico and boring. But, on this recording, each voice screams, as though trying to out sing the other voices and creating a whirlwind of chaos, begging for mercy (which is what the lyrics mean) and converging into cadence. That's only about 3 minutes. The whole 55 min. will leave you speechless (if not singing along, as I do).

Exsultate Jubilate is a bonus that just makes this recording more worthwhile. I enjoyed hearing a coloratura sing this peice for a change because Koth's voice is very crisp, clear, and understandable. She also takes advantage of her high vocal range during her 8 second solo, which brings a bit of levity into the peice. Aside from the vocals, the peice is performed in a light and quick tempo, which really emphasizes the joy in this peice. Writen at his 17th year of age, it also gives a more youthful perspective at Mozart's work in comparison to the requiem, written during the last few days of his life.

Overall, I highly recommend this recording to anyone, from the classical music buff to the angry goth-rock teenager.
