This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

A wonderful and varied compilation of Sacred Choral Works.......2001-08-13

This is a 2 CD set and is one of my favorites. While this CD contains several pieces that the general public probably hears often (Handel's Messiah, Bach's Jesu Bleibet mein freund) it also contains some not well known pieces. Of particular quality is the recording of Gregorio Allegri's MISERE MEI DEUS, a piece composed at the end of the Renaissance era. This piece, lasting roughly 13 minutes, is a master stroke of pure choral music. The piece is repetitive but Allegri builds up to a fantastic ending. Also of note is the glorious recording of Mozart's AVE VERUM CORPUS, Hadyn's DIE SCHOPFUNG, and Brahm's EIN DEUTCHES REQUIEM. A MUST for any choral music fan.

The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

So far this my favorite classical CD of the year. I never tire of listening to it (over and over on my iPod). It contains some really beautiful renditions of very moving classical pieces, both modern and ancient. All in all an emotional and dramatic presentation. The overall effect is relaxing but it will definitely never bore you!

Utterly disapointing.......2006-12-12

The sound and mixing on these CDs are below anything. It's the type of CD where you constantly have to adjust the volume because some songs are just inaudible and then others come out blaring. Is there anything more annoying? The recording is poor quality. And the interpretations are just bland. A waste of money.

Something for everyone!.......2004-01-11

This double CD is certainly worth the small price. The choral music runs the gamut from Bach to John Tavener, all represented by well-known choirs and conductors. Although the music is wonderful, the selctions are not in any order, sometimes creating confusion. But give a listen and if you do not get hooked on the greatest choral music ever written, then you need to crawl back in your cave!

furtwangler, celibidache, and..........2007-01-29

i had been enamoured with furtwangler. i just couldn't be satisfied by other conductors after having listened to his brahms and bruckner. these composers, to me, seemed to have created entirely different universes with their symphonies (in the most literal sense!). they weren't expositions of pretty music - they were 'cathedrals of sound.' and no one except furwangler seemed to be able to project the grand aura that made these pieces so beautiful, so frightening.
and then i ran in to celibidache. my first encounter with him was his recording of the bruckner 3rd, popularly known as the wagner symphony. i was blown away by the massive sonorities celibidache conjured from the munich philharmonic orchestra. yes, the performance was very long. but celibidache certainly had a point - if he had tried to conduct in a faster tempo, then our ears would've been congested by the torrent of music.
the brahms symphony no. 1 is the only account other than furtwangler's 1951 recording that i have been completely taken aback with. what strikes me as most astonishing is the rapport between the conductor and the orchestra. every phrase, every tone is so meticulously projected that one rather imagines that celibidache is a giant with hundreds of arms, playing on his own.
the german requiem is even slower! but you cannot be disappointed. this is, after all, a requiem mass. the chorus is top-notch, too, and i found myself almost engulfed by rolling waves of music.
celibidache's bruckner might be a little taxing on the mind; his beethoven even more so. but his brahms will convince you like no other.
furtwangler, bohm, szell, bernstein, and celibidache are all dead. the age of the titans has reached an end.

Powerful. Beautiful........2006-03-08

This recording was my first introduction to Celibidache's conducting and I must say I've been very impressed. The phrasing, dynamics, and tonal richness are superb. The tempo is decidedly slower than most performances of this requiem (hence the need for two CDs), but that can be traced to the fact that it is a live recording and Celibidache was very sensitive to the dynamics of each concert hall he was performing in. If there was more reverb in the hall, tempos were slower because each note had to be given full space to breathe... to live and develop. I really appreciate the slower tempo, though, because I've heard so many more things in Celibidache's recording than in the other 5 I own (Herreweghe [the best of the remaining five], Previn, Shaw, Gardiner, and Blomstedt). I would highly recommend this recording if you're looking for an extremely sensitive, passionate performance (and don't mind the occasional audience cough). If you want a crystal clear, measured, polished, studio recording, I would go with Herreweghe's recording.

Parece que ahora se impone recuperar una cierta vivacidad en el Requiem de Brahms, siguiendo sin duda la tendencia de los directores "historicistas", y más en concreto la estupenda versión de Gardiner.

De acuerdo, la ecuación que iguala lentitud a espiritualidad nos suena a caduca sensibilidad decimonónica, a melífuas plañideras y beatería. Pero al escuchar esta versión de Celibidache, con una duración muy superior a la del inglés, no puedo por menos que olvidarme de las normas y modas sobre tempos: la morosidad de Celi no es blanda ni cansina, sino un prodigio de intensidad y de control, una maravilla que en manos de cualquier otro de desharía como un buñuelo de viento recalentado y fofo, pero que gracias a esa firmeza e intensidad deja a la postre la sensación de máxima unidad y penetración: un autentico placer de desarrollo, que deja una huella imborrable. Corre uno el peligro de no poder tomarse en serio el resto de las versiones, que al lado de esta parecen ejercicios de escolares con prisas por acabar sus exémenes.

La orquesta y el coro suenan magníficos, bajo el portentoso control del director. Los solistas son estupendos, muy en especial el (para mí) desconocido Franz Gerihsen.

Toda esta intensidad en la duración, esa potencia no basada en la sofisticación y en una ternura razonable hacen de este "Requiem humano" una joya que le deja a uno con el ánimo en forma para todo el día...

I've listened to the other authorized celibidache edition on dg.....I've listened to bernstien's early cycles with the new york philharmonic and later versions in germany on dg..I've heard szell on sony, barenboim in chicago, harnoncourt in berlin, dorati on the mercury label..I've paid attention to solti, sawallisch and sanderling...no one comes close to understanding brahms like celibidache does on this recording except maybe his earlier 1959 version with the milan symphony orchestra...the phrasing is so smooth as if it's rhythm is all that matters in life...it's the first recording where the passages with low volume carry as much weight as the louder parts...if you're a brahms fan, this cd is a must..it's too bad brahms didn't write more symphonies, just so that celibidache could conduct them.

Live Klemperer Treasure from 1968.......2006-06-27

This extraordinary set of live Klemperer performances should be in the collection of everyone who cares about Klemperer and his marvelous style of music making. Massive and often slow but always vital and alive, they will not appeal to everyone. But it is astonishing how these CDs bring into sharp focus Klemperer's real magnetism on the podium. As good as his EMI recordings are, they are so very much the product of the recording studio one can be forgiven for wondering whether they represent what Klemperer was in fact capable of achieving in live performance, particularly near the end of his career when his various physical disabilities became almost overwhelming impediments to performance. Somehow, almost miraculously, Klemperer put it all together for a few weeks in the late Spring of 1968 in Vienna to produce truly incandescent performances. Not note perfect by any means, this is music making nevertheless for the ages. I suppose the Mahler 9th comes closest to failure as it offers some of the most ragged playing in the set. (According to the excellent liner notes, some of that can be attributed to Klemperer but more to the orchestra's unfamiliarity with Mahler's last great symphony and even downright hostility to Mahler's music in general.) But in the end that raggedness doesn't matter at all. Klemperer's trademark qualities as conductor are very much present in the Mahler as in all these performances: clarity of polyphonic texture; structural integrity; overall rhythmic coherence (even if ensembles are a bit 'shaky' at times). I was particularly moved by the performances of Bach and Mozart -- the 'Jupiter" symphony is positively incandescent -- as well as by the Bruckner Fifth which is, hands down, the greatest performance of that symphony I have ever heard, live or on record. But all these performances are well worth hearing again and again in spite of their foibles. All performances from the 1968 series are in good quality stereo sound; the single mono recording, a very decent-sounding performance of the Brahms German Requiem, is taken from a Klemperer concert in Vienna about ten years earlier. I don't recommend this set to the 'note perfect' crowd or to anyone who has a fixed idea about what is the "best" recording of the Beethoven Fifth or Mahler Ninth. But if you are prepared to hear the 'thoughts' of an old man who has struggled with this music all his life, for whom this music meant more than anything else on earth and for which he was willing to push himself past pain and infirmity for one last encounter, then I think you will be moved and enriched by this priceless set.
