5 out of 5 stars Staggering Clarity and Articulation.......2000-02-04

Uchida's success in divining the manifold subtleties of Mozart's piano sonatas, and showing the listener how much expression was really embedded in them all, was one of the all time great achievements of twentieth century pianism. For me, this tradition continues into the more plainly evident delights of these two concertos. Critics say that 26 is the dud among the glories of concertos 20-27, but you wouldn't know it listening to Uchida's interpretation. Mozart never wrote out the piano part for 26 in its entirety, and Uchida offers a few interesting and successful variations on the "official" score. The gentle melancholy of 27 seems made for Uchida's spiritualized reading of Mozart, and the slow movement will just break your heart. Absolutely stunning. Tate does a fine job with the ECO, and although the sense of dialogue that often shines through in the interpretations of pianist/conductors such as Perahia, Barenboim and Ashkenazy seems missing, it doesn't seem as important with these two concertos as it does with some of the others. There are so many fine recordings of these concertos out there (I especially like Ashkenazy) that you have to expect perfection, and this Uchida/Tate collaboration comes as close as I can imagine to that elusive state.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06

The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.

As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.

However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.

But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.

My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.

Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A treasured musical file!.......2005-10-12

The whole story of the composers-conductors have not been written may be well considered unfinished if the name of Britten is not included. His approach in what Mozart concerns is a fact worthy of the best and sincere epithets. He added these Piano Concerts not only elegance, cram, noblesse but also aristocracy and refinement.

So when the imaginative melodic flight of Britten converges with the wisdom innocence of Sir Clifford Curzon -one of the few artists who "made sing" the piano- (Wilhelm Kempff was the genuine master in this field), the result is a true enraptured and inspired Mozart, because as the Great Genius, Mozart 's significance is major by what suggests instead by the expressed.

I should remark the special relevance of this CD because both works mean somehow, the alpha and omega of the best set of Concerts of Wolfgang Amadeus: the 20th is to my mind, the most complete and profound of all Mozart piano Concertos. It possesses humor, innocence, tragedy and redemption; all the mythic cycle expressed in thirty minutes.
"The brevity is the soul of the cleverness"

Absolutely recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent playing, but piano too distant.......2005-06-09

These are excellent perfomances, however, I had trouble listening to some this recording because the piano seemed so quiet and distant and was often overwhelmed by the orchestra's volume. I found myself straining to hear the quiet passages, but couldn't turn it up because the loud sections with full orchestra would be too loud. This was particularly the problem with the Britten-conducted performances, Nos. 20 and 27, less so on the rest.

I'll still try to listen to this cd, but I have other Mozart Piano Concerto performances by Alfred Brendel and Richard Goode that have better definition in the sound and a piano that doesn't get lost in the orchestra that I enjoy more.

5 out of 5 stars Great recordings.......2002-05-27

Decca has wisely chosen Curzon's recordings of these Mozart concertos for reissue in their "Legends" series. Nos. 20 and 27 with Britten and the English Chamber Orchestra are absolutely classic, nos. 23 and 24 with Kertesz and the London Symphony hardly less so. Curzon was at his best in Mozart. His playing is stylish, elegant, and expressive within the context of Mozart's period, without exaggeration or idiosyncrasy. The sound is excellent and has been successfully remastered. The only snag is that no. 26 is split between the two CDs, but since this is the least popular of these concertos anyway this probably won't matter all that much. Highly recommended, and a tremendous bargain at this price (I paid almost this much a few years back just for these recordings of concertos nos. 20 and 27!).

      4 out of 5 stars 25 Classical Heartbreakers.......2006-11-29

Although these are popular and widely heard compositions (that's why I gave it 4 stars) they are very soothing when you want to mellow out. However, I can't understand why the title reads '20 Classical Heartbreakers' when there are 25 pieces.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best version of the 21th!.......2007-03-30

The most famous of Mozart's piano Concertos widely has never been performed with major expressiveness, elegant phrasing harmonic modulations, sublime thrills and majestic excellence. The main protagonist were Robert Casadesus and Georges Szell that evening of Nov 5 1961 when the members of the Cleveland and the legendary interpreter literally signed for immortality the ethereal bewitchment of this sublime work. They bestowed the K v.of radiant musicality and inimitable freshness. Casadesus makes the piano an extension of his soul and feelings that nobody until this date has been able to equal and nor anything like it surpass

I just can make you sure, that hardly you will find a version so extraordinary, overwhelming and mesmerizing like this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Pianist To Whom Rubinstein Felt Threatened.......2004-12-18

A most mercurial and profound interpretation of Mozart's music, more in the mellow French way than the Viennese way. Moreover, Casadesus will show/tell you so much about harmonics and music. Other than Edwin Fischer, who else could make the concertizing pianists feel like beginners? Casadesus certainly could. A very good starting point to learn more about the French school of pianists.

Szell is also a wonder here and this is a most wonderful water colour he has painted here. Cleveland under him ranks as one of the top most ochestras as of right.

The two concertos are quality '61 & '62 recordings, way better than most other Sony recordings with legendary artists: Either the pianist or the conductor alone is well worth the ticket and Previn is just a bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of Sony's claim as being an "essential classic".......2003-01-18

I know words never do justice to music or any other good art, but when listening to
this cd the word "perfect" keeps surfacing. Mozart had that uniquie ability to elicit both beauty and strong emotions, while at the same time building musical architectures (especially in these two piano concertos) reminiscent of those made famous by J.S. Bach. Although I'm not always in agreement with Sony's record execs. on what should be considered essential listening, in this case they are quite accurate in their assessment! As this recording receives A's on all three essential categories: performance, composition, and recording.

I try to imagine what a concert goer must have experienced during the days of Mozart when a piano concerto such as these would premiere. Given that there was no such thing as a recording (outside of sheet music), I now understand why his music was so wildly popular back then. I would even venture to say that these piano concertos are accessible to the average listener of today, if one would invest the time, and were able to undo the connotations that come with the unfortunate commercialization (through movies, commercials, etc..) of classical music.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2001-04-20

This is truly an inspired version of these concertos. Szell and Casadesus work marvellously together to really bring these pieces to life. Casadesus is remarkably short on certain cadenzas, but, while this seems strange at first, the overall effect is to keep the pieces light and radiating a simple beauty. So often these concertos are overburdened with excessive ornamentation that detract from the overall effect of the music. Casadesus manages to ornament beautifully without losing the point of the music. The "Elvira Madigan," despite its overuse, manages to sound fresh and appropriately playful, and the "Coronation" concerto effuses just the right amount of pomp while maintaining enough levity to still sound Mozartian. Previn (one of my all time favorite conductors) makes a short and sweet appearance playing Mozart's "A vous dirai je maman" (aka "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"). It is brilliantly played and a joy to listen to (as one would expect from Previn). Finally, you can't forget the unbeatable price. Absolutely no complaints. If the recordings were not so good as they are this would still be a great buy. So why hesitate?

5 out of 5 stars Authentic all along.......2001-01-17

Szell was not an easy conductor. I have heard that members of the Amsterdam's RCO referred to working with this perfectionist as "Szell straf", a small word game with the Dutch word for prison sentence. For us listeners at least, there are only benefits, especially when the longevity of Szell's work translates itself in bargain prices. Matching up with the very like-minded Robert Casadesus the result here is two of the best performances of both Mozart Concertos available. The playing is masculine, detailed, free of the so often annoying digressions that the romantics and the authentics throw at us, tasteful and musical. Mozart does the talking. It is simply funny that all the virtues that the Bilsons, the Tans, and the van Immerseels have been talking about, but were never able to achieve themselves, were there all along. There are many alternatives, but these interpretations have survived and will be around for a long time. This issue is concluded by the variations by Previn in a way that fully justifies his inclusion with these classics.

4 out of 5 stars marvelous... but then again, why change what's already perfect?.......2006-11-07

There's so much to like in the performances of these transcriptions, but there's so much missing as well. Shiraga plays Hummel's piano parts with elegant phrasing and impressive virtuosity; but the piano is forced to take up so much of the missing orchestral parts that the effect of musical conversation so essential to the concerto is lost. These readings left me at once delighted and longing for the original versions. After all, the Mozart piano concerti are perhaps the most perfect works of art ever created, the closest mankind has ever come to a resolution of the tension between subject and object. On the one hand I love these pieces so much that I am eager to hear any and every performance of them that I can get my hands on, even in these small chamber ensemble reductions; but on the other hand, why change what's perfect? why would one ever want to compromise the miraculous Mozart originals? So I couldn't decide between a five-star rating and a three-star; I settled for four, averaging it out. You'll have to listen and decide for yourself.
