A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!
Total Time: Disc One 71:20 on 19 Tracks & Disc Two 71:24 on 17 Tracks...Varese Sarabande 302 066 225 2...(2001)

Thomas Quasthoff is unique as singer and artist. His voice, always astonishingly powerful, has over the years acquired an ever-growing warmth, purity, range, and expressiveness, and his extraordinary wealth of dynamics, colors, nuances, and inflections is truly amazing. He uses these for instant changes of mood and atmosphere, while his seemingly unlimited breath control lets him spin endless lines and phrases. In these songs, all these qualities are on full display; indeed, Quasthoff admits choosing them with this in mind. However, the program is beautiful, judiciously varied and contrasted, combining popular favorites like Schubert's "Trout" and "Heidenröslein" with unfamiliar gems by his unjustly forgotten contemporary Carl Loewe, who wrote hundreds of splendid ballads. Of special interest are two very different settings of the same Ludwig Uhland poem, "Frühlingsglaube" ("Faith in Spring"), one by a very young Mendelssohn, the other by a mature Schubert. The former overflows with youthful exuberance, joyousness, and ecstasy; the latter breathes lyrical serenity. In a rather unusual reading, Quasthoff starts it with a sense of tremulously hopeful anticipation, gradually becoming more confident and finally blossoming out into radiant affirmation. Otherwise, the Schubert group is least convincing: always sensitive to the fusion of text and music, Quasthoff, perhaps seduced by the resources of his vocal palette, indulges in fussy, excessive "word-painting" and loses the songs' essential simplicity. However, in the more complex, dramatic, declamatory songs, this works wonderfully. Loewe's ballads, in which he impersonates three distinct characters, and Schumann's "Belsatzar" become veritable operas, and he regains a moving simplicity in the more lyrical songs, like Mendelssohn's "On Wings of Song" and a Strauss group. Justus Zeyden is an exemplary collaborator, but even he is defeated by the long sustained notes in Strauss' "Morgen!" where the violin obbligato is sadly missing. In "Danny Boy," Quasthoff turns himself into a very persuasive American-style crooner. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Quasthoff at his most inspiring.......2004-05-17
Thomas Quasthoff has set the highest standards for himself in lieder singing, challenging the dominance, on records, of Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau. Here he seems to soar even above those exalted artists, because of his thrilling range, total commitment, deep insisght, and complete lack of artifical "personality." The arc of his mastery has risen from his fine RCA years to reach this peak, and now he has no one to surpass but himself. It's a humbling experience to hear an artist of this greatness...perhaps the last living exemplar of a great German singing tradition.
Quasthoff's best release to date.......2004-05-13
I may just be a sucker for these songs, but I really think this is the best solo recording Quasthoff has made so far: some of his other recordings suffer from an improper balance between piano and voice (like his WINTERREISE or SCHWANENGESANG), but here, Justus Zeyen's contribution feels an equal partner; each interpretation is fresh and vivacious; and the program is put together well. This is also the first time I've felt a recording comes close to the electric experience of hearing Quasthoff live; the sound quality captures everything very intimately.
Then again, this might be my personal love of these song talking. One review I've read of this recording refers to it condescendingly as a "Lieder's greatest hits" CD with "all dessert and no meat". But who cares: Schubert's "Im Fruehling" and "Ungeduld"; Schumann's "Belsatzar," "Widmung," and "Du bist wie eine Blume"; and Strauss' "Zueignung" and "Morgen!" are at the top of my list of favorite songs of all time, and to have them all sung so beautifully on one CD makes this a great CD for me. Plus, these "greatest hits" are also songs that ideally suit Quasthoff's artistry--so what's wrong with a CD that shows a singer's mastery in this repertoire?

Splendid, powerful, expressive and sonorous sounds.......2003-10-23
If you have already bought the King's Consort's Johann Schelle CD then this should be next on your list. If you haven't bought the Schelle disc, this is a good place to start. I guarantee you'll want the Schelle cantatas recording after you hear this!
The music ranges from brilliant Baroque works for strings, trumpets, drums, cornetts and trombones, to more introverted and heart felt works with voices, strings & basso continuo.
The singers are excellent and the instrumental ensemble is first rate.
Very little of Sebastian Knüpfer's music has been recorded. I think only Cantus Cölln has made any significant recordings of this composer's music before.
Congratulations to Mr Robert King and his team for this superb recording.
Another greatness in Leipzig.......2001-10-05
Before J.S Bach there WERE great composers in Leipzig! Knüpfer's cantatas and concertos are solemn and immensely dignified, yet never monotonous due to the artfully varied voice and instrument combinations. In its ability to elicit emotion this music is not a "primitive precursor" of Bach, but often powerfully sensitive to the varied texts, and when full of pomp takes no backseat. Counterpoint is not prominent, the music never sounds "busy." This disc begins with a blast of baroque brass as a mighty preface to the first piece, which is...a soprano concerto? This is just the first example of the startling shifts (or "inconsistencies") that animate Knüpfer's music and keep you alert and interested. Later, instead of the glory of heaven, the trumpets are used to express the anger of God. The choir passages are soprano heavy (doubled or tripled) and these are females, while the altos are sung by the famous countertenors Bowman or Blaze. Choirs are small, usually only one or two singers to a part.
Texts are given with English only translation. Dr. Wollny's fine notes are rather brief for what may be recording premieres. The ecclesiastical roles of the eight short pieces recorded here are not discussed, and there's little about what must have been the immensely difficult transcription of manuscripts to produce playable editions. Wollny does not point out whether or how Bach ever drew on Knüpfer's music. The picture of The King's Consort is too small to see the baroque instruments clearly.
This impressive disc is #2 in an extremely important CD series by the King's Consort, one misleadingly entitled "Bach's Contemporaries." This is the earliest of three discs (so far) which actually present three nearly forgotten composers who were lineal predecessors of J.S. Bach as cantor at the Thomaskirche, Leipzig (Schelle and Kuhnau are the other two). (18th century views of this church comprise the cover art.) So far none of these obscure (but truly excellent!) composers are properly "contemporaries" of Bach (Knüpfer died a decade before Bach was even born), and most of their music may have been tossed out by Bach or the Thomaskirche librarians (as was customary before Romantic historicism arose). Such nits aside, this series is off to a great start in rediscovering once prominent musicians who produced music that is also highly attractive to modern ears.

The failure of Rhode Island natives Velvet Crush to have much impact outside the cloisters of American college radio is one of life's more vexing mysteries. Their frequently exquisite albums are laden with terrific hooks, gorgeous harmonies, and lovely, languid choruses. Free Expression finds Velvet Crush remaining loyal to their founding principles: an abiding and guiding love of Big Star and the Raspberries, and a certain spiritual kinship with Teenage Fanclub and the Posies. There are some new touches added, however, and they're all for the better: the exuberant horns on the giddy "Melody #1" and the mournful slide guitar on the gentle country trundle "Heaven Knows"--the album's highlight and possibly Velvet Crush's finest few minutes. --Andrew Mueller
Customer Reviews:
Great, underappreciated band.......2001-10-20
I think the previous reviewer, Scott Waldon, meant "apex" instead of "nadir."
I still think that they hit their apex with Teenage Symphonies, but I can certainly see how some people pick this album as their favorite: There is absolutely nothing to dislike on this album. It's all good, it's all melodic, and it all rocks, with superb guitar work. Still, I keep coming back to Teenage Symphonies the most, so I'm giving this album four stars and TS five as a relative rating.
That's still definitely enough of a recommendation to buy this album!
Their best yet........2000-11-16
I know a lot of people drool over Teenage Symphonies..(a previous release of theirs), but this one is their best. It is the most consistent, and mature effort to date. A very easy flowing, enjoyable ride. I think they have reached their nadir. For fans of Beatles, Byrds etc. Pick this one up.
More of the same a good thing.......2000-02-29
Just a quick comment - this is another really strong album by Velvet Crush. But to my ears, somthing is wrong with the production. Though obviously not recorded in mono, the sound is very flat, like something out an AM radio. At first I thought my headphones weren't plugged in all the way - that sort of idea. It doesn't matter as much without headphones, but it bothered me knowing these great songs could sound even better. For great playing by the guys from Velvet Crush, check out Duffy's self titled CD,produced my Mitch Easter.
Now Comfortable with Vox.......2000-02-23
Where did Chastain get this voice! It's awesome and I suspect genius pop mastermind Matthew Sweet had something to do with it... anyhow any weakness I ever was dissapointed by in The Crush's sound has vanished. Love the rockly irreligious intro "Kill Me Know", and the compact but harshly distorted sweet pill "Worst Enemy". Huge slow drum rolls and shining guitar glacier-speed "Between the Lines" while "Roman Candle" has great wah-wah. Paul McCartney almost says a quick hello on "Things get Better"! Well not really but you know! Anyhow every track is absolutely great, and most are sort of short leaving you desperate to hum them or just pop the cd in again! This goes up there with "Girlfriend". It's just so good! Don't deny yourself! Makes life worth living! Buy. Buy now, Buy is good!
A wonderful find.......2000-02-14
I bought this slbum based on the reviews, and I was not disappointed.Indeed it exceeded my expectations, and it is an CD that I play againand again. If it were possible, I would give it 4 1/2 stars, since it is one of the best recent albums I have heard (especially in the power pop genre). The songs are both gentle and passionate. The voices weave in and out of amazing harmoies, and there is even one track with beautifully understated horns. I find myself humming some of the catchy tunes, and yet I am enchanted by the overall complexity of the music. I highly recommend it.

The four composers represented here have produced a panoply of sound in infinite variety, magnificently recorded by Marc Aubort and Joanna Nickrenz. These two CDs are a hi-fi fan's delight. Kim Kashkashian partners with Robert Levin in Meyer Kupferman's Beauty and the Beast in an all-out display of musicianship and power, Paige Brook's sonic reach spans the four instruments of the flute family from the highest to the lowest in Iain Hamilton's Sonata for Flautist, composer Alvin Brehm takes the bass part in his own Sextet, inspired by Alban Berg's Lyric Suite, Ezra Laderman has the benefit of Timothy Eddy for 'cello on his Partita for Solo 'Cello and Iain Hamilton's great musicality and skill is heard in his writing for a very wide selection of instruments in original and fascinating combinations.

Album Description
"A major talent... an enthralling listening experience. We should hear this major piano talent again, and soon!" -DONAL J. HENAHAN, THE NEW YORK TIMES
A very special release in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth! Pianist Robert Hamilton is a Mozart specialist whose performances have been called "compelling," "stunning," and "among the finest renditions by living Mozart interpreters". The recording promises some of the very finest recorded piano sounds ever heard, due in part to a unique, newly developed set of microphones and a very special acoustical environment. A favorite of audiences on four continents, Hamilton divides his time between the teaching of gifted students at Arizona State University and serving as Artistic Director for the annual London Music Festival in England. Featured in the book The Most Wanted Piano Teachers in the USA, Hamilton is a Steinway artist.
"Hamilton is a very fine pianist. All of his playing has sensitivity and color. One of the best of the million or so around." - Harold C. Schonberg, author, THE GREAT PIANISTS
