Album Description

Sound & Sweet Airs (That Give Delight and Hurt Not) is an enchanting organ, trumpet, and fluegelhorn recording that carries the listener to another place and time. It was recorded in Shakespeare's boyhood parish church (Southwark Cathedral) which is located on the south bank of the River Thames in London, England. The small and beautifully designed interior of the cathedral provided an intimate atmosphere in harmony with the nature of the recording. The historical significance of this location blends together the talents of two masterful artists, William Shakespeare and Ian Carr, one past and one present.

In Sound & Sweet Airs (That Give Delight and Hurt Not) Carr combined the melodic timbre of the trumpet and fluegelhorn with the organ, played by John Taylor, as they recorded each selection between the hours of midnight and dawn on May 21, 1992. In Ian Carr's own words, "all the pieces were inspired by words from Shakespeare and this - plus several hours spent at dead of night in that magnificent environment - made the whole experience a very powerful one." Carr conceived the idea for each selection from Shakespeare's plays. The title, Sound & Sweet Airs (That Give Delight and Hurt Not), was taken from The Tempest.

This combination of Carr and Taylor is an inspired one, recorded overnight on two days in Southwark Cathedral in London. The acoustics are magificent and the music majestic and calming. It sounds Baroque, but the compositions relied on purely spontaneous and unrehearsed performances.

This Carr material is closer to the classical inclinations of Old Heartland rather than the jazz-rock pyrotechnics of an earlier period in his career. If you like organ and trumpet/flugelhorn this recording would appeal. The CD is packaged as a neat slimline with liner notes by Carr.

Nyman's best, as well as most original and most challenging piece. I didn't like it the first few times I heard it, but after I found my way into the scorte (so to speak) I found it incredibly beautiful. Unlike anything you have ever heard. Minimalist but a very busy "maximal" minimalist.

Nyman's Masterpiece.......2001-07-29

Recorded a bit before Nyman, in my opinion, fell off the musical relevancy map with so many uninspired film scores, Noises, Sounds, & Sweet Airs (the correct title) may well have been this once-genius composer's last gasp. But what a last gasp! The disc works as a single piece of tightly-woven musical tapestry that cannot be divided up into individual "songs" or movements because it plays Nyman's musical fascinations and obsessions so close to the bone. Some staggeringly sublime moments whoosh and waft and soar from this recording, and as long as I have it to listen to regularly (and Nyman's scores from Greenaway's films) I need nothing else. One of the most exquisite recordings I have ever purchased. How I wish he'd get back to such stuff and forego the pornography of his art, such as it currently is, in so much movie dribble.

Sophomore effort.......2007-02-01

Someone gave me this CD as a gift, and it's amazing I still talk to the person. This CD is full of bland, flat performances from a strained, undertalented, overblown tenor who should have retired, or better yet, never have started his career.

The only reason this CD is worth owning is to have a recording of Hoiby's "Be Not Afeard" which is a beautiful piece totally murdered by the performer.

On the bright side, this is a perfect gift for someone you hate!

First rate Dramatic Tenor of the old school.......2006-10-05

This wonderful singer is from "the old school" of singing. A very exciting heroic voice. There a few dramatic tenors in the world today and too few recordings of these great opera arias sung by large voices. Jacque Trussel, is indeed a great tenor, I will tell all my friends and students to buy the wonderful recording. Bravo Divo!

Mr. Trussel is a consumate, dynamic performer whom I've had the pleasure of seeing & hearing perform at Covent Garden in London. This Cd is an exquisite experience. Here, his voice is as glorious as it is live. This cd will make you want to see and hear him live. The repertoire is a vast spectrum, ranging from the tormented music of Don Jose in Bizet's Carmen to the triumphant music of Siegmund in Wagner's Die Walkure. There is music from Montemezzi, Verdi, Strauss, Weber, Barber, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Lee Hoiby "Tempest" (a role that was written for Mr. Trussel and premiered by him). This Cd is an exciting combination of music that isn't recorded very often. And it is all sung with great passion and a full, beautiful tenor voice. The Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra is both robust and delicate, when need be.

Thank god, A REAL TENOR!!!
