5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!.......2003-08-07

This is a must for all trombonists and music historians!! The sound of these groups is just amazing! Nowhere else can you get a sound like you do with the instruments that these trombonists use. Where else can you hear a contrabass, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and sopranino trombones all together? A great CD for a historical reference on the trombone also...tromobone chiors are one of the oldest forms of music, and THE oldest perfoming groups in the USA are the Moravian trombone choirs. This CD gives us a rare look into the past of how trombones were commonly used in centuries past, and how the tradition continues today.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Moravian chorales from childhood........1999-11-20

Trombone choirs! I love them. Everytime I hear this recording, I see again the church of my childhood and the trombone choir standing out in the snow near the front steps playing Christmas chorales during the hour before the Christmas Eve service. Why were they out there a full hour before the service? If you wanted a seat, you had to arrive an hour early, because late comers sat in folding chairs in the cloakrooms, or stood in the back. That church was filled to brimming only on Christmas Eve, because music lovers came from miles away to hear traditional Moravian Christmas music, and where else could one possibly hear it? Some of it is on this recording. The words sung to track 8 are "All my heart this night rejoices...", and that sense of anticipation and pleasure is exactly what Moravians feel as they enjoy a night of great music, sung mostly by the people in the pews, not just the choirs. It's all here. The great songs from Advent, Lent, songs of repentance, forgiveness, joy, for baptising babies and burying old people. When you hear track 19, Hosanna, think of a room full of singers on Palm Sunday, echoing back and forth to each other, the little girls and women singing back to the boys and men. My only criticism is that there are perhaps too many songs in minor keys grouped together. They evoke too much sadness and start to sound like endless dirges. The musical interpretation and masterful rendering of the chorales is absolutely delightful, not only for us who hold all the words in our heads and are singing along, but also for those who will assign their own meaning to the music.

Amazon.com

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20

this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.

Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.

Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10

I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.

4 out of 5 stars The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28

Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08

This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.

5 out of 5 stars And this is only the tip of the iceberg..........2004-09-20

Craig Phillips is a gifted composer, and this disc reveals only a part of his genius. As a brilliant yet practical organist, he has written a large number of organ works based on hymn tunes that are possibly the finest works in this genre being written today. So many composers are content to just come up with a counter-theme and set the tune pretty much straight through, but Phillips uses the melody as a basis for a work, fragmenting and rhythmically altering it so that you know what the piece is based on without being hit over the head with the tune. And there is a wealth of other very fine choral works that are not recorded here.

But enough about what's not here. What is here is a wonderful recording of much wonderful music. To any choral director contemplating programming the first work, the Benedictus Dominus Deus, be forewarned that you will need to have a fine organist at hand. This is a joyful and exuberant work. It is followed by the more introspective "Teach me my God and King", one of the finest settings of George Herbert poetry around.

I know that some church musicians are a little put off by the text of "The House of Faith has many rooms", because it does not subscribe to the "my way (Jesus) or the highway" approach of some groups. I would only remind them that Jesus said that in his Father's house were many mansions, and that he also said that he had sheep that were "not of this fold" (meaning his followers). It is a beautiful work, and in this time when religious tolerance is much-needed, it has a message that needs to be heard.

"And I saw the holy city" was unpublished (to my disbelief) at the time this recording was issued, but was just released by Oxford University Press this past July (2004). This work is constructed as a great arch, with the capstone being the revelation of "the glory of God". "Ride on, ride on in majesty" underlines the cruel irony of Palm Sunday: the rapturous greetings of the crowd as a prelude to the Crucifixion. Many settings of this text focus on the "majesty" without giving weight to the phrase "in lowly pomp ride on to die." Phillips manages to do both, and in doing so has created a classic Palm Sunday anthem. "Keep watch, dear Lord" is a setting of a prayer often used at Compline in the Episcopal Church, and it seems to evoke a quiet confidence that the prayer will be answered.

It is interesting to me that the three works for instrument and organ all involve instruments that play in the tenor/bass range. I would be interested to know whether that was a function of the availability of musicians to play those parts, or a function of who commissioned the works, or a deliberate timbral choice. While all are fine works that deserve to be heard, I was powerfully struck and profoundly moved by "A Song Without Words for Cello and Organ" composed by Craig in memory of his brother. This is truly a masterpiece, and the publishing industry has lost its collective senses if this does not find a publisher soon.

There are hardly enough superlatives for the music on this disc, and, while the performances were fine, there were a few times when I thought the choir, particularly the sopranos and tenors, took on an edginess in their tone that did not serve the music well. This is music that benefits from a warm choral sound. I suspect that part of the problem was that the conductor prefers a sound with little or no vibrato, and that can lead to stridency in the upper register of all but the very finest singers. A little more red-bloodedness in the singing would not have been amiss.

That said, all I really want to know is when does volume 2 come out? And when will Craig issue a recording of his organ works?

5 out of 5 stars A Triumph!.......2004-02-03

Craig is one of the most gifted, accomplished, and prolific composers in the United States. From the festive opening Song of Zechariah (Benedictus Dominus Deus) to the brilliant closing A Festival Song (text of Walt Whitman, with full orchestra, commissioned by CoroAllegro, Jack Warren Burnam, Music Director), this disc is a stunning treasury of Craig's work. His setting of Psalm 34 is melodic and compelling. A George Herbert text is heard to delightfully gentle music. Carl Daw's inspired text The House of Faith Has Many Rooms receives a sensitive choral treatment. The Revelation verses for the triumphant And I saw the Holy City were set on commission (appropriately) for All Sants' Church; this splended work, now published by Oxford University Press, would be a great addition to an All Saints' Day Sunday service. The Evening Prayer mission collect Keep Watch, Dear Lord would grace a Choral Evensong. The signature Palm Sunday text Ride On in Majesty makes an excellent and largely lyrical anthem, a contrast to any of the competing hymn tunes.

Four wonderful instrumental works provide contrast: a rich Serenade for Horn and Organ, a Pastorale for Bassoon and Organ, a jubilant Fanfare for Organ, and A Song without Words for Cello and Organ (this last written in memory of Craig's brother Brooks). Three of these are (or were at the time of release) unpublished, bu I hope that these eminently usable works will find their way into the repertory. Soloists Paul Klintworth, William Wood, and John Walz (respectively) are all excellent. Craig's musical language is always accessible and appealing, as well as lovingly crafted.

Tom's choral forces rise fully to the challenges of the music, with subtelty as well as brilliance, and always projecting rich tone, fine diction, and genuine musical understanding. The liner includes Byron Adams' extended essay on Craig, full texts, credits (including information about publishers), and candid photos. Joe Bellamy's engineering capturs the sound of the choirs, the Casavant/Rosales/Schlilcker organ, and the acoustic of the church.
