4 out of 5 stars Pleasant music to listen to.......2003-10-25

I am just begining my appreciation for classical music and bought this cd pair to help me begin. I truely enjoy it while doing yard work, cross stiching, studying, or going to sleep. I have not noticed the hissing that other people have complained about, but I do believe that this is not the best quality cd. There have been many times when the second disc would not even work, like the player couldn't read it. This was very frustrating, so I mainly stick with the first disk. I would not recomend this cd, however, I would recomend the music. If you can find these songs on another disc, get it, you will find some time in your daily routine that it will fit right in with.

5 out of 5 stars Just an amateur classical music fan.......2002-02-28

This is the best of the Adagio series by far

3 out of 5 stars Great selection, poor sound quality.......2002-02-21

Adagios are beautiful and represent the depth of the composer. However, as one reviewer stated before me, the sound quality is poor. Some pieces have to compete with the hiss to be played as they should be at normal volumes. I hope that another label can come out with such a stunning array of adagios but with a much improved sound quality.

2 out of 5 stars This is not what it appears.......2000-10-02

This is sold as a DDD recording but some of the recordings are over forty years old and hiss like a snake. This should be categorized under 'Historical Recordings'

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace.......2000-09-14

Over 2 hours of emotionally uplifting music from the master of romanticism. This 2 CD album include all his best like Moonlight Sonata, well worth your money. It's wonderful to listen to at work or while studying at home for an exam.

5 out of 5 stars The Alchemy of Bizet and Shchedrin.......2004-10-03

The words "Transcribed" and "Arranged" come to mind when trying to describe the Shchedrin suite from Bizet's Carmen. But a more apt word may be "Alchemy". He has taken Bizet's music and created a wondrous amalgam that is greater than the sum of its parts. Shchedrin scored the music for strings and percussion only. A lot of strings and a lot of percussion. I have to say that this version of Carmen is the definitive one and it will spoil you for any other version. I have never heard the Carmen Fate motif expressed more vividly than in this work. I bought this CD because my original vinyl LP (c. 1967) has accumulated a lot of pops, clicks, and noise from overuse on my lathe of a turntable.

My collie Damian loves music so I am a fan of the concept of music for pets. I recently purchased every title in Amazon related to pets. They are all very good attempts at soothing dogs (and cats too I guess!). Hands down - or PAWS Down - PET MUSIC - a 3CD set - is the very best.

    Amazon.com

Spanish critics have long hailed Gonzalo Soriano's two recordings of Nights in the Gardens of Spain--this one from 1962 and an earlier effort with Ataulfo Argenta--as among the finest readings of the score ever committed to disc. It's easy to see why. Soriano brings to bear a conception that is firm, detailed, and energetic and plays the piece with real flair. His partner on the podium, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, only 28 years old when the recording was made, sparks a magnificent account from the Paris Conservatory Orchestra: masculine, evocative, and glowingly ardent despite occasional problems with intonation in the horns and low strings. For this most impressionistic of Falla's scores, it's an ideal sound. The companion pieces, Falla's El Amor Brujo and a suite from The Three-Cornered Hat (not the complete ballet), are masterfully rendered by Carlo Maria Giulini and the Philharmonia Orchestra. --Ted Libbey

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Musically outstanding, but de los Angeles isn't right for El Amor Brujo.......2006-07-09

I agree with all the appreciations given by the Amazon reviewer and those below, and graced by atmospheric recording from EMI's engineers in the early Sixties, one gets a great deal out of all three Falla works, his most popular by far. I don't collect different versions of Nights in the Gardens of Spain, yet Gonzalo Soriano's sounds impressively evocative. Even more impressive is the young Fruhbeck de Burgos's magical orchestral work--forty years on, he's matured into even deeper mastery, as witness his recent guest appearances with the Boston Sym. in everything from Falla and Stravinsky to Verdi and Beethoven.

Giulini's conducting is not especially Spanish in flavor, but he, too, is exceptionally musical. The lack of Spanish fire deprives El Amor Brujo of its raw flamenco power, however, and Victoria de los Angeles, applying a lyric soprano where Falla wanted a mezzo who could make the listener's spine tingle with her passion, is too civilized and polite. At this time in her career (1962) de los Angeles was establishing herself as a pre-eminent singer of Spanish songs, but El Amor Brujo simply wasn't right for her.

4 out of 5 stars Guilini = amazing; but de los Angeles ruined El Amor Brujo.......2004-06-10

This particular review refers only to the El amor brujo part of the recording, so if you're not buying the CD for that particular piece, this review may not be relevant. I was considering buying this recording when I was lucky enough to hear the El amor brujo section of it played on the radio. The conducting was miraculous. The only place where I felt the conducting wasn't flawless was at the very end (which seemed a little unconvincing to me), but overall it was extremely beautiful.
I do not plan on buying this cd, however, because the singing from Victoria de los Angeles was absolutely awful. I personally had never heard her sing before, but had always read good things about her. There was no warmth or ring of any kind in her voice. When the piece began on the radio, the singer wasn't announced, and I kept thinking, why would such a wonderful conductor get such an awful singer for this piece, and when I found out that it was her I was shocked (it was announced when the piece ended). I suppose I can say that rhythmically she did do some interesting things, and it did sound like she was involved in the music, but I really couldn't handle her singing.
So, I would give the conducting 5 stars, but about one star for de los Angeles. I'm giving it four stars just so it won't bring the rating down too much, because I'm sure that the other pieces on the disc are likewise very well conducted (and, thankfully, exclude de los Angeles).

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Falla.......2003-09-22

This CD of the music of the great Spanish composer Manuel de Falla is truly fantastic. This title, one of the few remaining from EMI's early 90s series "Studio Plus," presents Carlo Maria Giulini and the Philharmonia Orchestra's golden-age stereo performances of "El Amor Brujo" (1961 with soprano Victoria de los Angeles!) and a suite from "El Sombrero de Tres Picos" (1957 & 1964). Though the treat here is Gonzalo Soriano's 1962 recording of "Noches en los Jardines de Espana" with Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos and the Orchestre de la Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire. These classic recordings have been or are available in other CD incarnations (the Giulini recordings were on a budget line two-disc EMI Seraphim set, now out-of-print, and the same "Brujo" is on a recent Great Recordings of the Century disc), but this mid-line title is the best way to get both the Giulini accounts and the memorable Soriano/de Burgos "Nights."

      5 out of 5 stars Delightful..........2006-06-08

The repertoire on this CD is amazing; it's not easy to find a CD with some of this arias, that are rarely found in recordings (like "O legere hirondelle"). Also, her singing is fantastic: her voice is light and clear, pure high notes and amazing runs. She's a great coloratura! And I believe that this is a great CD to have.

2 out of 5 stars You want a French Coloratura? Buy Lily Pons instead.......2005-12-26

Natalie Dessay, while a true coloratura and nothing else but a coloratura, has incredible high notes (but not as incredible as Mady Mesple or Pons, those will stop your heart cold, they are so amazing) but lacks in middle range and her interpertation is rather non exsistent. I heard that is is a gifted actress but none of it reads in her recordings. Her tone is often grating and usually seems slightly forced. I prefer before my time singers such as Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Medy Mesple (if you have not heard her, buy a cd NOW!) and of course, Lily Pons whose high notes are so effortless and breathtaking they don't even seem human. Natalie Dessay, sadly, does not impress me at all and frankly I don't understand why everyone is so enraptured with her. She's fine and yes, talented, but I'm just not feeling her singing. It just doesn't work for me. Wish she'd stop singing all the french, I get it, you're french but putting out like three french albums in a relatively short timeframe is kind of overkill.

5 out of 5 stars Dessay Sparkles in Familiar and Rare French Opera Arias.......2004-05-15

Natalie Dessay is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive coloratura sopranos of this century. And there is no better way to experience her voice and artistry than to hear her singing in her native tongue. This CD presents Dessay in a refreshing presentation of arias from both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, combining both well known music with some more modern rarities. The recital begins by presenting the soprano in music that fits her like a glove, "Où va la jeune indoue", the Bell Song from Delibes 'Lakmé'. It is a joy to hear Dessay creating a dreamy atmosphere, with full attention to the words and fearless in her attack of stacatti and high notes. She even sings the final high E in a crescendo. This Cd is high note feast, up to a sustained high A flat in "Ombre légère" from Meyerbeer's 'Le Pardon de Ploermel'. However, the stratopheric high notes are only part of the assets of Dessay. She is also willing to concentrate on character, something specially evident in the pieces from more modern operas. In "Arrière! Je réchaufe les bons" from Ravel's 'L'enfant et les sortilèges' her use of portamento makes this Fire commanding and menacing. Another delight is the feminist aria "No Monsieur mon mari" from 'Les Mammelles de Tirésias'by Poulenc she is a dynamo of energy and humor. Her Olympia and Ophélie are in the tradition of the great French coloratura sopranos like Pons, Robin and Mesplé. The CD ends beautifully with a sweet and poetic rendition of "O, amour, mystérieux amour", an unknown jewel from 'Les Caprices de Marianne' by Sauguet. This aria ends the recital in a high note both literally and metaphorically, with Dessay in a spectacular cadenza with pin point stacattos and a stunning high E than begins softly then goes louder until it goes again to pianissimo. The Orchestre Philarmonique de Monte-Carlo conducted by Patrick Fournillier complement Dessay's artistry beautifully. There are no weak point on this recital: these are sixty five minutes of pure joy.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly Enjoyable.......2003-06-04

To compare Dessay to Mado Robin or Erna Sack or Mady Mesple is simply ludicrous. She is in a different class. She can charachterise better than all of the above, she reaches all the notes with more ease, and she simply has the agility which none of those artists really have. Mesple was good for other things, but she wouldn't sing this repertoire, so please, spare us the gumph. Dessay is a fabulous artist, a light colloratura that travels with ease in the stratospheric heigths of the arias she performs. While there is not much on this disc of heartbreaking depth, it is very well sung. Occasionally the voice strikes one as a bit piercing, but generally there is more warmth than Sumi Jo, and less unsteadiness than Gruberova. I will not enter into a "spot-the-highest notes" contest, but enough to say the high(est) notes are all there. Light but highly enjoyable fare

      5 out of 5 stars I can't say enough!.......2001-08-11

Natalie Dessay is the coloratura of our generation! Her voice is extremely impressive. Every album she releases has the vocal fireworks that any music lover wants from their sopranos. This album features some of the world's most beautiful French music. Her "Doll Song" is so fun and full of laughter and of course the high notes. The other highlights for me are Meyerbeer's "Ombre legere" and the "Bell Song" from Lakme. No other coloratura performing today can measure up to the power and strength that Natalie has with those gorgeous notes. She may not warm your heart when down in her mid-range but when she climbs up you can't help but open your mouth and say, now that's a note! Pay close attention to the super high G at the end of "Ombre legere". Wow!

3 out of 5 stars All the music, but ..........2007-06-11

This CD gives you more of the Namouna ballet music than any other one out there, and for this reason alone it's worth it for devotees of Lalo's special brand of propulsive, rhythmic, French musical late romanticism to acquire. But to my mind, Maestro Robertson's interpretation is heavy-handed in quite a few numbers of the score -- as if he's thinking of this as a symphonic poem rather than a ballet. To really hear how effective this music can be when treated to true Gallic wit and style, turn instead to Paul Paray's superlative recording of the Ballet Suite #1 on Mercury. Even though it includes less than half the music recorded here, it's the better choice. Also, the Detroit Symphony in the Paray recording is far more fleet-footed and polished than the earnest yet ultimately unsatisfying efforts of the Monte-Carlo players.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Much The Definitive Account.......2005-05-19

The wonderful French conductor/composer Manuel Rosenthal (1904-2003) died one day short of his 99th birthday. A pupil and close friend of Ravel, Rosenthal left a wide variety of excellent recordings. This CD gives us "Gaiete Parisienne" from the source, for it was Rosenthal who in 1938 arranged this delightful pastiche based on Offenbach's operas.

Rosenthal recorded Gaiete Parisienne three times: in 1953 on a monophonic Remington LP, and then twice with the Monte-Carlo Orchestra (a 1977 recording for EMI and this one for Naxos, made when he was 92 years old!). I confess to owning all three recordings, each of which is somewhat slower than those by most other conductors.

Which ONE of those to own? They all have their merits, but if I could keep just one, it would be this Naxos CD. It has GREAT sound, it's apparently the only one available on CD at the moment, and it's coupled with Rosenthal's other famous Offenbach-based ballet score "Offenbachiana." Keep your eye out for the more complete version of the latter score, conducted by Rosenthal with the better Paris Opera Orchestra. That was available on a now deleted Ades CD called "Hommage A Manuel Rosenthal," and it contained about 15 minutes more music than this Naxos CD provides (including the nifty Apache Dance). I am also fond of the Urania LP version of Gaiete with celebrated Offenbach conductor Rene Leibowitz leading the London Philharmonic, but that has not yet shown up on CD. If it does, I would suggest buying that one as a supplement to this fine last effort by Rosenthal. Among the faster stereo CD accounts currently available, I would opt for Felix Slatkin's (EMI).

      Highly recommended.
