5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Destined by sheer size to hold up a whole orchestra, the double bass is rarely encountered in solo or chamber music. But on this record, Jeremy McCoy, Assistant Principal bassist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, proves that this mighty monster will let a great player perform fascinating technical feats and elicit sounds of astonishing beauty and variety. Collaborating with equally brilliant partners, he displays his instrument's infinite resources, as well as his own stunning virtuosity and stylistic versatility; the program--partly original, partly transcribed--ranges from Baroque, real and faux, to the present. Two charming Italian "Duettos" sound like parodies of grand opera: Bottesini's, himself a great bassist, for two basses, and Rossini's, for cello and, incredibly, a three-stringed bass. Both include singing slow movements, bouncy finales and dazzling pyrotechnics. Jazz bassist and composer John Patitucci contributes two pieces: one rhythmically spicy, one lyrical. A Telemann Canonic Sonata, familiar on flutes or violins, growls on bassoon and bass; Martin Dalby's Scottish-influenced "Rant" features sound effects for flute and bass. Duets by Gliére and Elgar, with viola and trombone respectively, are lovely. In Jean Francaix's brilliant "Duo Baroque," the bass and harp make fun of themselves and each other, but the joke goes on too long. This record will leave you smiling with admiration and delight. --Edith Eisler

Album Description

Jeremy McCoy's new album, "Dialogues with Double Bass" presents a wide-ranging look at the double bass repertoire. The album highlights two particular themes. The primary notion is highlighting the bass as an equal voice in instrumental duos that are diverse and interesting conversations. A second theme is found in the vocal quality of much of the music. Like Bottesini, one of history's most famous bass players, who earned his living playing in an opera orchestra, Jeremy McCoy is a seasoned member of New York City's Metropolitan Opera Orchestra (the orchestra's assistant principal bassist). The influence of great singing can be heard in McCoy's playing, in the way he shapes a phrase and in the varied tonal colors of his sound. McCoy's wide experience as a soloist, chamber player and orchestral musician, and the expressive range of his instrument, finds him right at home in this engaging collection of eloquent dialogues with the double bass.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Dialogues.......2007-01-08

I enjoyed listening to "Dialogues with Double Bass" from beginning to end. I would recommend this excellent disk without any reservations!

The range of instrumental colors makes this a varied and interesting listening experience. This recording captures the fine details of the instruments without losing any warmth.

Communication between the players is excellent. McCoy's bass playing is superb, with great feel and great timing.

I have heard other fine recordings of the Rossini, but this one is my favorite. Kudos to Jeremy McCoy for showing the potential of the double bass in duet settings!

3 out of 5 stars Dialogues With Double Bass.......2007-01-03

I bought this CD primarily for the recording of Elgar's Duet for Double bass and trombone. It contains a very wide variety of music, all of it good: however, because of the variety it is not often I feel like sitting down and listening to it in one sitting. It is more of a "dip into" CD.

Overall, tho, a very fine CD which shows off some of the textures available to the double bass.

5 out of 5 stars Jeremy McCoy: Dialogues With Double Bass .......2006-10-25

This is a CD of duets with double bass in a classical music format. It is so refreshing that it does not sound confining like classical music can at times. I put it right up there with Yo-Yo Ma's Bach: The Cello Suites Inspired by Bach! Recording of instruments is clean, dynamic, yet highs and low in volumes are not so great that you are turning the volume up and down all the time. Five star on mi iPod!

5 out of 5 stars Christian Lindberg Rules The Trombone.......2003-12-31

After listening to "The Virtuoso Trombone," also by Christian Lindberg, and playing "Air" by Bach (track 8) as a solo, I bought this CD. As a trombonist, I can tell how great Christian Lindberg really is. But even my friends who hear his work are amazed at his talents. My favorite on this CD is "Overture to The Barber of Seville," but I honestly listen to all of the songs on the album and enjoy them all. Even a casual listener of classical music would love this CD and I hightly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Trombone Triumph.......2001-04-18

This is a very interesting and very well-done CD, arranging a number of familiar compositions for trombone with piano accompaniment. It works quite well, giving an altogether new sound to these works, old wine in new bottles, which is very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars A lovely musical gift.......2001-03-16

I am truly delighted with this CD. Lindberg has created a great tribute to his instrument and to much of the music he has chosen to "steal". I think that there were a couple of choices that, while fun, to be sure, were less than ideal ones. The Mozart, in particular suffered somewhat, especially in articulation, not least as a result of the unfortunate fact that there a few things quite as awkward as a "turn" on a trombone, even in the hands of a master -- it was a bit disappointing, despite being interesting. But I quibble. The Rossini was a tour-de-force, and the "Albinoni" and Schubert were beautifully done. The real glory, however, occurs when Lindberg chooses to sing, as occurs in the Schumann Romances (especially No. 2) and in the Bach air (the last track on the CD). These are perhaps two of the most "stolen" pieces of their types, especially the Schumann set, written originally for oboe, but which every string and wind (and now trombone) player adores for their achingly beautiful melodic lines. Lindberg lets his heart fly in the Schumann without getting schmaltzy, and I can listen to these over and over and love them more each time. I play a different instrument, but I can now love the trombone for what Lindberg has given us here. As for the Bach air, from its first sustained note, one already feels Lindberg's reverence for this music, this limpid epitome of baroque melodic genius. There were moments when I just closed my eyes and held my breath and felt grateful to something greater than myself. This CD is a gift to trombonists everywhere, and to us all. Buy one for yourself and another one for a trombonist you love.

5 out of 5 stars An all-around GREAT CD.......2000-05-21

This CD is one that even non-classical music lovers can enjoy. It is a fun cd, especially when Lindberg shows of his skill in Overture to the Barber of Seville. I myself play trombone and Lindberg is in my mind, the premier trombonist in the world. I highly recommend this CD!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful trombone CD.......1999-03-06

Trombone players of the world should really like this. (Other folks should, too.) His "theft" of works for other instruments is beautiful, fun, moving, and just plain great. The variety of selections is good. Who needs a violin for Albinoni when you have a trombone around? Get this one!

5 out of 5 stars This is a must for any trombone player.......2005-06-24

I listened to just a couple of the clips that were presented on this page and...wow...these guys are hard-core-bad-to-the-bone. I am an avid trombone player and I love this CD. To me it shows off just how capable and versatile the instrument that we all love is.

5 out of 5 stars this is my FAVOURITE trombone cd..........2004-04-14

      ...and I've got 'em all!

you just can't beat those smooth solos in 'the pink panther' and 'someone to watch over me' and you'll be humming the bass trombone lines from 'layla' for a long while to come.

      fantastic.

      5 out of 5 stars Umm, WOW!.......2004-01-10

Wow is the only way to describe this CD. 76 trombones playing 76 trombones in a big cathedral, doesn't get any better than that. It also has a ton of really great arrangements of great songs. Trombones doing Claptons Layla, oh yeah!

      5 out of 5 stars way cool.......2003-10-03

This is one of the most exciting, most musical brass recordings you will find. These bone players obviously had a terrific time making the recording - just wait until you hear their version of Clapton's Layla!

      5 out of 5 stars Like trombones?.......2002-04-08

If the sound of trombones stirs your heart, here is just the CD for you. 16 trombonists from various British orchestras ban together in this compilation. The result? Wow! That's all I can say!

The music chosen is a great mix of classical / chorale pieces as well as some more jazzy tunes. Composers such as Gershwin, Brahms, Mancini and Monteverdi are all represented. My favorite track is Gabrieli's SONATA PIAN e FORTE. Performed by a trombone ensemble, the effect is truly captivating.

One of the most innovative pieces is an arrangement of Barber's Adagio for Strings. Yup, that's right: it's performed by trombonists & the results are very impressive. Something I would have never thought of, but the gracefull & brassy sounds of the trombone add a dimension to the brooding Adagio that most people would not have imagined possible.

For diversity, the album also contains the theme from the PINK PANTHER as well as an Eric Clapton tune (LAYLA) jazzed up for maximum entertainment. Then, to top off the album, an additonal 60 trombones are brought in to perform (of course) 76 TROMBONES.

I would highly recommend this CD to all persons who can't help but smile @ the sound of a well played trombone. I would even surmise the people who have never thought much of the instrument would get hours & hours of enjoyment from listening to this album. It's that good. Trust me.
