5 out of 5 stars So I'm just learning violin..........2006-09-21

and I can not play like Joshua Bell. For this, he better consider himself damn lucky as the world could not handle two of us Joshua Bells.

This was my first exposure to this phenom. Sorry, I had never heard of him until I got my first issue of STRINGS magazine and he was on the cover. My wife liked the cover and wanted to know if I got better would I not only sound like him but would I also look like him? I guess we'll never know how that will actually turn out. Safe to say, I'll end up not looking like him as I can never be quite as good as him. Again, damn lucky for Josh as I don't think the world could handle two of us.

This disc is an absolute gem not only for the Joshua Bell and violin fan, but the arrangements and the sound quality is superb. What this disc made me realize is that there are truly only a few out there that have complete and total control of their craft. It also made me decide that I would like to perhaps pick up a few more Joshua Bell recordings. For my wife, I guess I'll just duplicate them and give the copies to her in a blank cd case. I can tell her it's me playing. That ought to heat things up!

4 out of 5 stars Joshua Bell..........2005-12-05

This CD is a wonderful CD to see how Joshua Bell interprets some of the standard repertory of violinists of this century. The only thing I was dissapointed in slightly was that it included music from other CD's already produced by Bell, but otherwise, a wonderful gift for someone who has never heard Bell before.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2005-02-15

I love classical music but I dont own very much of it, so I thought I would start my collection with Masters of the Bow. What a beautiful selection it was. I just love the sound of a Violin, Joshua Bell is my favorite,I would love to hear more from him. This collection really helps you get to know the masters. Lovely Lovely!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-08-17

I love the violin and this collection is one of my favorites. A great choice for someone like me who doesn't know enough about music and never knows what to buy. It has introduced me to some artists and pieces that I knew nothing about and will help me know what to look for in violin music in the future. This is my favorite but I would also recommend The Cello and Voice CDs in the "Masters of" series. I can't wait for more in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful collection.......2001-03-25

A delightful collection of shorter works for violin with piano accompaniment, some of them extremely familiar, others less so, but with Grumiaux's lyrical style (not flamboyant like Perlman's, but graceful and beautiful in an understated way), and fine accompaniment, the music on these 2 CDs is consistently excellent and can be listened to either consecutively or just a few pieces at a time. Well worth having.

Isaac Stern is a devotee of 20th-century music. The most recent piece, Copland's Sonata, is actually the most euphonious. Stern lets its lyrical lines sing, with excellent support from the composer at the piano. The most challenging and dramatic piece in the collection is the earliest, the Bloch Sonata, which Stern and Alexander Zakin play with all-out fervor. The Hebraic Baal Shem is one of Bloch's most often heard works, here done with great folk flavor. And Hindemith's prewar neoclassicism never sounds dry in this very knowing performance. In short, this is a great collection of 20th-century violin works that won't give anyone indigestion. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars A fine collection of 20th century sonatas, played with freedom and Stern's beefy tone in Bloch .......2007-05-20

Here is another intelligently conceived collection of sonatas played by Isaac Stern, making up volume 28 of Sony's tribute to the great American violinist. Stern's is joined by his usual partner of those days, Alexander Zakin, and by the composer himself in Copland's sonata. As the liner notes point out, despite their considerable stylistic differences, all three composers have in common to have ended their lives in the United States (both Hindemith and Bloch became naturalized American citizens) and their involvement with teaching (Hindemith at Yale, Bloch at Berkeley and in Cleveland, Copland in New York and Harvard).

Hindemith's terse and harmonically grating sonata was recorded as early as 1947, and was one of Stern's first recordings (his first one was Wieniawski's 2nd concerto, made in 1946). He had met the composer who was then in residence at Yale, and they played Beethoven's violin concerto together. Mono sound, a bit dry, with the piano a bit recessed and sometimes lacking harmonics, but violin well defined and surprisingly utterly no surface noise.

The Copland sonata, recorded in 1968, was originally part of an all-Copland CBS LP with the Duo for clarinet and piano and Nonet for strings. The composition is pervaded by the serene and wistful mood of Appalachian Springs, but with traces, in the first movement's slow-fast construction and especially in the piano part, of the earlier, more radical Copland of the Piano Sonata. It is difficult to define what is "American" music - but it is easy to recognize it. The recording has of course the full authority of the composer at the piano. Copland had made an earlier recording, in the last days of 1947 (the piece had been premiered three years before) with Louis Kaufman, and that was briefly made available on CD, in the early 90s, by Bay Cities (BCD 1019, with Walter Piston's first violin concerto as the disc's most substantial companion piece), but alas that CD doesn't seem listed on this website. Tempos have broadened in the intervening 15 years - a phenomenon often observed in the history of recorded music in the 20th century - and the later recording benefits from Stern's lusher sound.

The prize aspect of Stern's rendition of Ernest Bloch's "Baal Shem: 3 Pictures of Chassidic Life", recorded in 1961, is the violinist's beefy tone and vocal delivery, with husky overtones and a broodingly meditative character: you can fancy being at the Synagogue and hearing the Cantor, making it one of the best recordings I know. The transfer is good, with minimum tape hiss.

Bloch's magnificent 1st Violin and Piano Sonata from 1920 is, in its outer movements, one of the most massively powerful and brutal works written in the form in the first half of the 20th century, equalled only by Bartok's first and some of George Antheil's essays in the genre. Stern and Zakin, in their 1959 recording, hurl into the first movement with hair-raising tension and almost frenzied passion, almost losing control in the process - most conspicuously when Stern enters a bar too early at 5:31, and all three movements are strewn with such little inaccuracies, though they are nothing anybody is likely to perceive without a score (and even then...). Stern displays a fine, beefy tone, abetted by a close recording and transfer cut at high level, but the most remarkable aspect of his interpretation is his willingness not to pull his punches and to apply tremendous bow pressure, roughening and uglifying his tone when needed (just try the beginning), but never at the cost of pitch accuracy. Given the daunting difficulties of the piano part no pianist here could be a mere "accompanist" and Zakin is well up to the piece's technical challenges, but the recording doesn't fully give him equal position with Stern and his powerful and weighty approach, with chords rung like thunderclaps rather than whiplashes, is not always entirely responsive to the score's invitations for snap and resilience of keyboard attack. The two partners apply much tempo flexibility, significantly broadening the pace in the more lyrical passages, and likewise they take an expansive view of the mysterious and haunting second movement (in which the lyrical theme from the first movement returns), markedly slower than the composer's metronome mark and conjuring echoes of similar movements by Copland or Ives. Stern's harmonics, in the passage starting at 4:15, have an other-worldly purity, but strangely he plays "arco" and "sul ponticello" the passage in sixteenth-notes at 5:01 rather than pizzicato as Bloch indicates - it is true that it sounds better that way. Again the Finale is processed with gusto and beefy tone from Stern, powerful playing from Zakin but somewhat subservient sonic perspective, and an acceleration of tempo at 1:54 that is effective and dramatic but absolutely not indicated in the score.

Not then the most precise rendition of Bloch's score, but Stern's gusto and lush tone makes it a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Copland's Simplicity.......2004-10-26

I ran across the Copland sonata and this performance in the early 1970s. I was ambivalent about chamber music at the time, but the beauty of the piece won me over. The stark simplicity of the second movement was unlike anything I had heard before. The climax of the final movement echoes Appalachian Spring in mood but the triumph in the sonata seems somehow harder won.

The Hindemith and the Bloch (particularly the Bloch) are well worth hearing, too.

The CD either reveals a bit of the original's sonic limitations or wasn't done perfectly. You don't notice after the first 10 seconds, but that's the reason I only rate this 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars old school playing.......2001-05-11

Isaac Stern gives a fine performance in this recording of the Hindemith, Bloch and Copland sonatas. With the new style of violin playing, it is hard to distinguish individual tehcnique; in the case of Stern, his unmistakable sound adds a charming tone to the sonatas. My favorite track is the first movement of the Copland. He takes some liberty with the specific tempi, but the lyricsm captures the essence of Aaron Copland's music. These older recordings are vital to the early 20th century rep, as they accurately display the individual composer's intents. The sound quality is lacking slightly due to the date of recording, but Sony does a good job in remastering the recording and editing studio noise.

While mining its archives, RCA has hit paydirt with this one: a full-length LP recital by Itzhak Perlman recorded in 1965 and--except for one item--never before released. Someone at RCA had decided that this wasn't the right program for the label to introduce a new violinist, and then, apparently, it just got forgotten. Well, it's a swell program with a fine variety of music, nearly all of it well played. The exception might be the opening set of three Paganini Caprices, which are too well played; Perlman rattles them off like machine-gun fire, without the expression he would eventually bring to the music. Both Baroque sonatas sound stylish, and the violinist even tosses in a bit of appropriate embellishment, highly unusual for the mid-sixties! The Hindemith Sonata, quite easy on the ears, is a particularly good feature for the excellent pianist David Garvey. Other highlights include the impassioned Bloch and the dazzling Bazzini, an incredible high-wire act to rival the famous Heifetz acoustic. Highly recommended to fans of the violinist and of virtuosity in general. The analog sound holds up very well. --Leslie Gerber

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre Tchaikovsky ..........2002-01-25

This Tchaikovsky Recording is a fair one. Perlman has better recordings; namely his performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra. The first movement sounds a bit too rushed and slightly "showman-like" rather than musician like. The Bazzini is slightly scratchy and rushed!! Perlman's pizzacato is also mushed and hard to hear. Listen to Maxim Vengerov's recording of the Bazzini... It's the best I've heard to date.

4 out of 5 stars Great performance; great recording; great occasion.......2001-02-09

This was one of a spate of classical recordings commemorating (or cashing in on) the end of the Cold War. _Bernstein in Berlin_ was one, celebrating the fall of the Berlin wall; a concert featuring Smetana's _Ma Vlast_ on the occasion of the liberation of Czechoslovakia was another. This disc records the first visit of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to Moscow, in another sign of the communist crackup of the late 80s and early 90s.

Musically, it's sensational. The Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto provides a generous showcase for Mr. Perlman's powers. IMHO it is a bit long, but that's all the more music to enjoy, I suppose. The liner notes contain the very interesting story of how this concerto came about--a famous violinist of Tchaikovsky's day, for whom the work was composed, rejected it for being "unviolinistic"!

The rest of the program features Perlman with a pianist, minus the orchestra. Some pieces, like Wieniawski's "Etudes-Caprices" are really musical bonbons. But reducing the second movement of Tchaikovsky's first string quartet to a single violin and piano is quite a feat. Every musical offering brings down the house; at the end the crowd practically carries him off the stage. The recording is crisp, with a good sense of the hall, with Perlman rightly being given acoustic center stage. A treat!

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss Live in Russia.......2000-02-07

I am a Perlman Lover and I own both the CD and the video of this concert. This performance contains some of my favorite show-pieces for violin, in particular Tchaikovsky's Concerto in D, Tartini's Devil's Trill, Wieniawski's Caprice in A minor, and Bazzini's Le Ronde des Lutins. The Tchaikovsky and Tartini pieces have been favorites of mine for many years and I grew up listening to them being performed by other virtuoso violinists.

Perlman's mastery of the violin is amazing. I prefer his performances to my long-time favorites. But, while I love his performance of each of the pieces individually, the real power of the CD or video for me is knowing that all of the pieces were all performed in a single concert. Hearing (or seeing) his brilliance in performing piece after piece is awe-inspiring. I am always moved to give him a standing ovation after the Bazzini piece that ends the concert. Recently, I listened to the CD with my eight year old son (who never claps for anything). At the end of the CD, even my son was moved to spontaneous applause.

Don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars If u didn't buy Itzhak Perlman's recording, start w/this one.......2000-01-24

The first CD of Itzhak Perlman that I bought, was this one, and I couldn't have done better. It's a wonderful CD, w/a breathtaking sound from Perlman's violin. When I first listened it, I comproved how good was him, and and after that CD, I bought other two that were avaible at the store. So, when u want to listen an excelent interpretation of Tchaikovsky's concerto for violin, this is indispensable.

4 out of 5 stars Perlman outstanding.......2000-01-04

I have become a fan of Perlman over the years, and I particularly love the Tchaikovsky concerto, so of course I had to have this one. I bought this disc a few days after hearing Perlman perform this concerto live with the Boston Symphony under Ozawa. This live disc captured perfectly the feeling I had sitting in Symphony Hall hearing this concerto. Perlman was not flawless in concert, neither is he on this disc. But his knowledge and feel for the Russian flavor of the piece is uncanny, and his technique is breathtaking. The orchestra could have been captured a bit better. Perlman's encores on this disc are absolutely unbelievable. If you're buying the Tchaikovsky concerto try Perlman's earlier recording with Philadelphia Orch. under Ormandy, as I think the orchestra is heard much better.

I'm usually not a huge fan of the last five decades or so of musical composition -- too much cacophany and obscurity, as if any sort of recognizable theme were a thought crime. This album has helped me grow more comfortable with several composers I did not previously appreciate. It's not easy music, but it's a wonderful, relaxing, and quite melodic listening experience rather than an intellectual exercise. Some pieces, such as the Eldin Burton Sonatina, are now among my favorites.

As an added bonus, this is a long CD -- 20 pieces, taking up 1.3 hours to be exact. So you get a lot for your investment. There's bound to be something in there you like.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2004-01-29

This CD is beautiful and haunting! I highly recomend it. It is very relaxing. I found this CD here on Amazon by accident, and ended up ordering it after I listened to the sample songs. Order it! It's great! :)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A finely composed collection of not always substantial pieces, played with chic and juicy tone.......2006-12-19

Volume 31 of Sony's Isaac Stern tribute "A life in music" brings together a collection of "encores", with recordings that date from the early years of the violinist's career: principally December 1947 and August 1952. The collection is assembled with taste, the 1947 recordings (Sarasate to Bloch and Dinicu to Falla - I don't know why Amazon lists Milhaud last, as it comes on track 16 out of 24) framing the ones from 1952. The sonics are excellent, with the piano sounding a bit subsidiary but the violin coming out excellently, and there's no gain in vividness that I can perceive in the 1952 violin when compared to the one from 1947. All the 1947 recordings were published on a single Columbia LP by the way (ML 4324), while the ones from 1952 were scattered on various records, and three of them never released until this CD.

And these three previously unpublished pieces are not always trifles: Jean-Marie Leclair's Sarabande et Tambourin (in Kreisler's arrangement) can qualifiy as such, and perhaps even Szymanowski's "Chant de Roxane" from his opera King Roger in Kochanski's arrangement, but certainly not the same's "La Fontaine d'Aréthuse", the 2nd movement of "Mythes", his (second) violin and piano sonata in all but name. Stern's recording makes one lament that he did not record the complete work.

By essence the pieces are snippets, not always substantial, but played by Stern with chic and his customary juicy tone, and Zakin is an efficient partner. My favorite are those with a folk-music tinge: the Jewishness of Bloch's Nigun, the 2nd movement of his "Baal Sheem" violin and piano suite, which Stern went on to record complete with Zakin in 1961 (now on volume 28 of the Sony Stern collection), the middle-east inspired melismae of Szymanowski's pieces, Dinicu's "Hora Staccato" in Heifetz' arrangement (the epitome of the wild Gipsy violin), Falla's Spanish Popular Suite (Kochanski's arrangement again).

There's more substantial stuff on other issues from this Isaac Stern tribute (hence my four-star rating), and this one to be fully appreciated needs perhaps to be heard bit by bit rather than complete, but there is some exceptional music and music-making here.

5 out of 5 stars Isaac Stern At His Best ! !.......2001-11-21

It's hard for me to believe no one has reviewed this CD! This CD contains encores for Violin and Piano played by one of the greatest violinist of the Century, Isaac Stern along with his life long accompanist Alexander Zakin.

Here is Stern at his best..The Technique, the Tone, the Shadings, and the Coloring are all perfect. All these recordings on this CD come from in my opinion, Stern's best period... the Late 40's early 50's.

His recordings of the Melodie by Gluck and Bird as a Prophet by Schumann are the best I ever heard..and that is including the recordings by Heifetz, Oistrakh, Milstein and Perlman. What a Beautiful Sound!. Also this CD contains previously unreleased material.
