This disc contains live performances of three of Helmut Lachenmann's earlier works--the world premieres of Interieur I and of Schwankungen am Rand, and a recent festival performance of the percussion concerto Air.

Interieur I (1966), for solo percussion, is the work Lachenmann now considers to be his Opus 1. For those who consider one percussion solo to be very much like another, this work probably will not change their mind--it is a well-crafted work but ultimately rather anonymous.

Schwankungen am Rand (1975), for orchestra, is often considered one of Lachenmann's most important works. I have always found it a little long, though the central section--where the percussionists 'play' on four thunder sheets, creating a huge variety of sounds from them--is quite extraordinary music. Good as this world premiere performance may be, it has to take a clear second place to the recent ECM recording, conducted by Peter Eotvos, which is faster, tighter, better controlled and in vastly superior sound.

Air (1969), for percussion and orchestra, one of Lachenmann's earliest mature works, is an interesting piece, the rumblings of the orchestra counterpointing the intricate sounds of the percussion part. The performance here, recorded at 1998's Ruckblick Moderne festival, is probably the best on the disc.

Overall, this disc is primarily valuable for the only available recording of Air. Interieur I cannot be regarded as a major work, and Eotvos' ECM recording--an outstanding disc overall--is to be preferred in Schwankungen am Rand.

This box set contains mostly the wind, violin, viola, and organ concertos that Hindemith wrote. Most of these works are hard to find on disc, especially the organ works. The Violin Concerto soloist Dene Olding is a little weak, and the orchestra at times empahsizes this by showing a full force that Olding simply can't match. I find the wind concertos to be tedious and not very interesting. But the Kammermusik are uniformly excellent. The viola works are fine, as well. I thought the Trauermusik was especially good, heartrending when it needed to be, contemplative in the best sense of the word. Albert's conducting throughout is solid and sure, but it's a shame that not all of Hindemith's music is equally good. No conducting can save the clunkers from themselves (like the mediocre Clarinet Concerto), but for the price, it's a set definitely worth exploring.

This 11th disc of the Grainger Edition is a marvel! It is some of his least known works and it shows Grainger's quality throughout his work. From his childhood, Grainger loved Nordic Sagas and later in life he spend much time in Scandinavia folk-song collecting and became good friends with Edvard Grieg.

Here there are melancholic songs, Romantic songs, and songs of freedom and joy. To a Nordic Princess is a masterpiece and in my mind, has the emotional power of Beethoven's 9th at its climax. The Merry Wedding is also a marital overflow of love and joy. The Danish Folk Song suite has every emotion in it you can imagine and is another masterpiece. I wish more orchestras would perform this as it stands up to (and mostly exceeds) any "popular" classical piece in artistic integrity, imagination, and listener enjoyment. Please buy this disc! you will be enthralled.

    This disc, recorded over ten years ago now, was one of the early discs in Mode Records' exemplary series of Cage recordings. It features three contrasting orchestral works from the latter stages of Cage's life, and can be considered a good summary of his mature styles.

    101 is one of the late 'number pieces'--the title merely indicates the number of performers. In it, while the notes played by the orchestra--and their order--are fixed, the performers have a considerable latitude as to when to play them. Unlike many of the 'number pieces', which are exclusively quiet and meditative works, 101 opens with crashing discords before settling into a more gentle phase. After about nine minutes, the crashing discords re-emerge, and the work then concludes with a near-silent epilogue involving softly-rumbling percussion.

    Apartment House 1776 was a Cage contribution to the bicentennial celebrations of the USA. It is one of Cage's anarchic 'musicircus' pieces, where a bewildering variety of performers all play at the same time, with little or no co-ordination between their parts. The musical material is diverse and intended to represent the culture of the USA at the time of independence: distorted versions of contemporary hymns, modified Moravian church chants, drum marches, variations on military melodies, and songs from the Protestant, Sephardic, African-American and Native American traditions. This rendition plays for 25 minutes--it can last as long as the performers wish--and while it is entertaining for a while I find it eventually wears thin.

    The third and last work on the disc is one of many versions of Ryoanji, a work where solo instruments trace slow glissandi against a percussive rhythmic backdrop. Here, the four solo instruments are flute, oboe, string bass and a rumbling bass trombone. The backdrop is built from 20 orchestral instruments each reiterating the same note--but slightly out of time with each other so that the rhythms are blurred and the sound becomes fuzzy.

    The performances here are good, and the sound surprisingly clear given that 101 and Ryoanji are live performances. Recommended to the curious.
