Customer Reviews:
The untiring harbinger of new musical ideas!.......2006-07-06
The multiple concerns that surrounded and even nourished the sumptuous bequeath of Stokowski, well would deserve a book of hundred of pages.
Something inside him must have been the main cause to rearrange "The Pictures at exhibition", his personal transcription is much more somber in certain passages and more stylized in others. If you are totally involved by Ravel' s transcription, maybe you feel something uncomfortable in the first listening, but there are very clever details of orchestration worthy to mention. The catacomb, for instance is by far, more sordid and scaring than the original. The great gate of Kiev is without discussion, the jewel of the crown, filled of remarkable details that notably, enrich the score Kudos for the BBC; personally I have always admired the sumptuous sound of this legendary orchestra.
The arrangement of Night on the bare mountain is outstanding, too. The tempos, the dramatic inflection changes, as well as the visible enriching of the score. Shostakovich's Fifth is extremely interesting; Stokowski is too much worried in the inner voices and to underline the notable parallelism between Shostakovich and Mahler. It possesses full tension, few exhibitionism displays and the final movement is cautiously incisive, not necessarily emotive. A very original approach, that maybe can not be at the same level of his previous celebrated version of the late fifties, but what it lacks in emotion, it compensates in expression.
The other notable aspect to remark is the untiring vitality of Leopold in this sense. Beware respect the age of the maestro in those performances: The Pictures were recorded on July 23 1963 ( 79 ) and The night on the bare mountain and The Fifth were recorded on September 17 1964 ( 80 ) with the London Symphony.
Old Apollo Stoki.......2003-05-02
This is a CD which contains live performances of the old magician and monster of the baton of 1963 and 1964. I can tell, that I never heard such an amazing performance of Shostakovich's Fifth. You'll never stop wondering the depth of his thoughts and the variety of imagination in this piece. Stokowski never puts a definite stamp on the work, he improvises it anew, giving this way a new birth to work and going into the depths of Shostakovich's soul. Perhaps, the greatest definition of Stokowski's Shostakovich performances is the judgement of the composer himself. Shostakovich greatly admired Stokowski's interpretations and considered him one of the greatest conductor of all ages since he was his personal friend.
Pleasant listening to everybody!
