Editorial Reviews
From International Record Review - subscribe now
Diplomat, composer, painter, poet, novelist and more besides Lord Berners was distinguished in each of these fields, and remains an important figure in British artistic life of the first half of the twentieth century. To describe him as a quintessential English eccentric does not do him full justice there is an intermittent depth to Berners's work which has ensured its survival, in the same way as the much better-known work of Erik Satie (with whom Berners can, not unfairly, be compared) has also survived. A cleverly planned reissue such as this, encompassing all aspects of Berners's musical output, is immensely valuable in enhancing our understanding of this brilliant artist. The recordings come mainly from a Unicorn-Kanchana LP issued in 1979, with the addition of some transfers from rare 78s and three tracks played by Berners himself. Quite apart from anything else, he was clearly a gifted pianist although the home movies' style of these last discs needs some indulgence from the listener. (We can also hear Berners humming along to his own playing, in which, like many composers, he seems too fond of the sustaining pedal.) Indeed, it is difficult not to like Berners's music: it is so beautifully written, and occasionally so provocative (as in the Polka, which never does what you want it to, yet blithely maintains its own logic) that it draws you back again and again. If you have a wealthy elderly relative, don't let him or her hear the Funeral March for a Rich Aunt wherein the tune' is accompanied by harmony not dissimilar to that of The Rite of Spring! (Incidentally, if you get the chance to see the 1944 Tommy Trinder film Champagne Charlie, don't miss the opening credits Berners's soundtrack here contains one of the funniest musical jokes ever perpetrated not on this disc, alas.) Berners's style may be a kind of amalgam, à la française, of Sullivan, Noel Coward, Elgar, Warlock, Walton, Cyril Scott and Lambert; but his Lullaby, from the Three Songs of 1920, is a masterpiece of which any British composer would be proud. The performances here are consistently fine and the transfers have come up very well. This fascinating disc can be strongly recommended, with the proviso that one ought not to play it all the way through at once. The presentation is better than recent issues from this source: Gavin Bryars's notes are excellent, although texts are not included, and the producer/engineer of tracks 1-27, the late Robert Auger, is not credited. He should have been, and I am happy to honour his work here. Robert Matthew-Walker

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Fergus-Thompson plays Bach Transcriptions.......2000-02-07
This CD shows a great aspect of the playing of Mr. Fergus-Thompson. Although the pianist tends to over-romanticize some passages he does show an often-neglected aspect of Bach's music: it humanity. The interpretations are less virtuosic than a virtually similar recording by Alexis Weissenberg in the 1970's (which EMI ought to release as CD). The approach is reminiscent of Edwin Fischer. One problem with this release is the horrible, clunky sound of the instrument used. Steinway could certainly do better. Mr. Fergus-Thompson would have been better served by a Bosendorfer.
A fresh feeling!.......2000-02-03
I decide to buy this CD is because of i need to learn the "chaconne", but after i hear all songs on the CD. i find it is very good! Many other bach's work are trancribed by many other composers ,are very good to listen. It give me a fresh feeling of bach's work! because some people may think bach's work is boring (include me) but you can try this CD and can sure you would like it very much!

Product Description
Jeremy Nicholas writes: “Phrases that chill the heart: ‘I want a volunteer from the audience.’ ‘Is this your car, sir?’ ‘Have we shown you our holiday snaps?’ Or how about “Tonight’s lecture is on the art of writing comedy.” Go to that seminar and one thing you know for sure in advance is that you are consigning yourself to an evening devoid of any humor. Dissecting comedy, analyzing jokes or, in this case, comic songs, has all the allure of pulling off the wings of a butterfly to see how it flies. Setting off writing a comic song is rather like being your own crossword compiler, designing the grid, filling in all the squares, setting your own clues. No, it’s not, really. It’s more like taking a pile of kid’s building bricks and making a spectacular skyscraper from them. No, that’s not it either. But there are elements of both that are pertinent (a good word for seminars).” In other words, comedy (and comic songwriting) is hard work. Think of the last time you told a joke and it didn’t come off. The material was right but maybe the delivery was off. But remember the joy when the response was perfect: not only did they laugh, but you sensed the anticipation: this is going to be funny. And for this album, the anticipation certainly pays off. Anyone who grew up in the 1950’s and 1960’s will recall the wonderful humor of the works of Tom Lehrer, the classic HMV (Angel in this country) LP’s of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. More recently we’ve seen how Stephen Sondheim and William Bolcom can easily move back and forth between the serious and the humorous. And just to prove that comedy can be serious business, we have the participation of Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the most highly regarded concert and recital pianists as accompanist and composer, joined by his wife Jody Karin Applebaum. Her resume includes performances of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and St. Matthew Passion, Handel’s Messiah, to contemporary works by Stephen Albert, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Gorecki. Together they have performed in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Canada, England and the Middle East. Together they have recorded music of Britten, Schoenberg, Bolcom, Wolpe, Weill, Satie and Poulenc. Here both they and you have some fun for a change!
Customer Reviews:
A Trancendental Sense of Humor!!!!!!.......2005-07-14
As an amateur pianist, I know how it is to play music of different styles for different occasions. I also have a slightly skewered sense of humor as well as a love of serious classical music. So on my shelves I have Dr. Demento as well as Mahler, Broadway Shows as well as Shostakovich. Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the best pianist nowadays because he makes the most hardest piece of music sound easy, is married to Jody Karin Applebaum, a wonderful singer. They have recorded the Cabaret songs of Bolcom, Britten and Fredrich Hollaender and now turn their attention to comedy songs from many eras. Much of this repertoire is taken from Sarah Walker's Cd on Hyperion. Applebaum's diction is very clear and every song has a different mood and different voices and accents when needed. Comparisons between William Bolcom and Joan Morris are inevitable. Bolcom's "Lime Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise" is also included. The program notes are written by Jeremy Nicholas, who has provided us with very informative program notes for Hyperion CD's, and who has written some wonderful songs such as "Usherette's Blues" and "Place Settings". Tom Lehrer's classic "Masochism Tango" makes an appearance (which is also on one of Dr. Demento's greatest hits CD's).Hamelin's recordings and performances have one thing that many pianist's do not have-HUMOR (when it's needed, of course). Here, he gets to put it to good use, and you can tell that they're having fun. This is a live recording, so there is much laughing from the audience, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Hamelin keeps suprising me with his CD's and repertoire choices, and this is no exception. Let's have some more, please!!! (maybe Dave Frishberg, more Flanders and Swann?).

Customer Reviews:
Walton, Lambert, etc.......2005-06-10
Most of these are superb performances, but the recordings are from 1930s-vintage 78-rpm discs. The sound ranges from nasty to startlingly good, considering, and of course, they're all in MONO. As in, NO STEREO. (It could be worse; they could be in faked stereo.) If you can forgive the primitive audio, this is an enjoyable recording. "Facade" is spectacularly weird; a gas!
