These two trios are well played on this disc. As usual with Saint-Saens the music is unfailingly tunefull and pleasant. The writing for the piano is particularly good -- perhaps because the composer was a pianist of some renown. I thought the sound quality was good but occasionally somewhat distant or veiled but certainly acceptable. Of course the naxos price is just right.

Two of Saint-Säens's best works.......2002-09-09

Saint-Saëns's two piano trios both rank among his best works. The four-movement first is more playful, with many syncopated rhythms and intricate melodies; the five-movement second, published close to thirty years later, is even better. Saint-Saëns delayed its completion for a while, and one can understand why when listening to it - it's obvious that a lot of work went into its composition. Although written for only three instruments, it rivals in power and majesty some of his most interesting large-scale pieces. Each movement is excellent enough when isolated from the others, but the cumulative effect of the whole is what makes this a masterwork. The piano writing is brilliant throughout, and this recording has a perfect sound balance, which is especially important in chamber works. The Naxos price is inviting, but it doesn't even matter: this music is priceless.

TWO SAINT-SAENS TRIOS TOO GOOD TO PASS UP.......2000-07-06

Separated by a thirty year stretch, the two Saint-Saens piano trios, coupled here together by Naxos for the first time on CD (to my knowledge), are beautiful, enduring, melodic works in the tradition of Schumann and Mendelssohn. It's incomprehensively mystifying to me that these trios have never entered "the standard repertoire." They certainly should have before this. Well, so it goes. Better late than never. Lucky us!

The Op. 18, written in 1863, is an immediately and thoroughly attractive work, every movement memorable. Particularly haunting is the lyrical Andante. The Op. 92, written in 1892, is every bit as moving and irresistable as its younger sister--- but, perhaps, a touch wiser and more ruminative; yet, again, each movement is a gem (and Camille, that sly French devil, has given us five, rather than the usual four, to treasure). As with the Op. 18, special mention should be made of the enchanting Andante.

The Joachim Trio, playing splendidly, receive a fine realistic and warm sound.

An Unusually Appealing Program of French Gems.......2003-07-30

Besides lovely performances and sound, this disc offers a wonderful program of French chamber music at its finest. Of the three works, the Ravel, with its gem-like sonorities and nervous energy, is a familiar, classic piece of Impressionist writing. But the Saint-Saens, at one time not well known to collectors at all, is a gem, too--one the composer's best works. I'm happy to see that this treasure is garnering more attention from ensembles and labels; there are quite a number of recordings to choose from nowadays. The performance by the Rembrandt is as good as any I've heard, with a lithe opening movement and a perfect balance of mystery and tenderness in the superb slow movement.

If you're new to the Saint-Saens, these two movements will be a surprise, by the way. The first has a lilting, Spanish-inflected opening theme that sounds like nothing else Saint-Saens wrote, while the second starts off mysteriously, sounding like the Frenchman's answer to Beethoven's "Ghost Trio," and ends up being one of his most deeply felt, richly Romantic pieces of writing. The scherzo is fun-clever and a bit arch-and the last movement appropriately bubbly. The Rembrandt does well by all of them.

More surprising still is the Chaminade trio. Cecile Chaminade is usually dismissed as a composer of salon trifles, but if so, this trio is a wonderful aberration. As we'd expect from any salon composer worth her salt, the work is full of good melodies, but it is also graciously put together and overall has a seriousness of purpose and demeanor that makes it a worthy companion for its two discmates. While I have nothing to compare the Rembrandt's performance with, the ensemble seems to get inside the music, and they certainly make a compelling case for it.

Camille St.-Saëns is one of those composers everyone knows and hardly anyone knows really well. Much of his output is satisfying and worth hearing, but these days we get mostly "Carnival of the Animals" and a tone poem or two. These Trios, from very different periods of the composer's career, are both substantial pieces. The first is full of youthful exuberance, while the second is more somber, almost tragic at times. (It begins with music that sounds like the opening of Tchaikovsky's Trio, which St.-Saëns may well have known.) Romantic in content and classical in form, both of these pieces reward repeated hearings. The experienced French ensemble Trio Wanderer gives lean, sleek performances of both works, which contrast markedly with the more meaty sound and interpretations of the English Joachim Trio. Both approaches work very well, although Trio Wanderer may be closer to the composer's own style. If you try either disc and respond well to the music, you may want the other to enhance your appreciation of this fine music. --Leslie Gerber

Wonderful music, perfect performance!.......1999-06-11

This is an AAD CD (analog recording and mastering). But beautifully recorded....the sound is just about perfect! Performance by the Trio Ravel is superb. I am very happy with this CD. If you like chamber music, this is a good choice. Easily five stars.
