The "Unknown" Beethoven..........2005-01-03

I think it would not be wrong to say that most casual listeners of classical music know Beethoven mostly by his orchestral works--the symphonies, piano concertos, violin concerto, and overtures. Those who go a little deeper might know him by the piano sonatas, violin sonatas, and string quartets; however, this misses a significant portion of his oeuvre--and a major facet of his ethos and art: specifically, the chamber works and lieder: this is the "unknown" Beethoven.

This collection is absolutely the best, finest, and most excellent presentation of Beethoven's chamber works: the Horn Sonata; the Piano-Wind Quintet; the Serenade for Flute, Violin, and Viola; the Clarinet Trio; the Septet for mixed strings & winds; and the String Quintet.

Plus, some really nice esoterica: the early piano quartets; trio for piano, flute & bassoon; pieces for mandolin & piano; and pieces for flute & piano.

All of these works fall into Beethoven's First Period; yet, they must not be considered "juvenalia": Beethoven was the greatest artist/poet who ever lived, and his genius was manifest from his teenage years.

This is a wonderful collection of Beethoven chamber music. The recordings are intimate, the musicianship is superb...the music is timeless. The piano concerti are the real highlights here; I don't think they can be any better, and the other selections are very pleasant. If you like Beethoven chamber music (and I can't imagine NOT liking it), then this set is highly recommended. Every now and then you come across a boxed set of recordings that you can listen to over and over. This is one such set.

Brilliant if sometimes odd rhythm and tempo.......2001-01-10

This CD, part of the magnus opus of Beethoven's works committed to CD is wonderfully brilliant and evocative of the renditions of the early 1950's.

Although there are the rare rhythmic, and very rare tempo peculiarities this must remain as one of the finest renditions of Beethoven's Chamber Works. This is of course to be expected from works produced by DDG.

version des kodaly. Il y a bien sûr d'autres bonnes formations
de ces quatuors, mais en écoutant ce naxos, on a l'impression que rien ne manque vraiment. À essayer.

Robust vitality and clear sound - An outstanding CD........2005-12-13

When the two quartets on this CD were recorded in 1998, the Kodaly Quartet ("KQ") had been playing together for more than a quarter century. It shows. What is evident on this CD is the perfect cohesion of the musicians; they clearly have an intimate knowldedge of the score, have played these two quartets many times over the years, and thoroughly enjoy playing together. Yet, at the same time, the performance of these four highly talented musicians is fresh and exciting, as if they were discovering, and celebrating, the magic of these compositions for the first time, and truly conveys their passionate enthusiasm and love for this music.

The allegro movements have rhythmic energy and vitality, while the adagio movements are played with a beautiful tenderness, pathos, and depth that allows the listener to savor every note. The recording is digital and is crystal clear, capturing the K Q's precision, their bright sound in the allegro sections, and their sensitivity to every note and every nuance in the adagio sections.

I am very highly pleased with this volume 6, as well as volumes 4 and 5 of this series of the complete Beethoven string quartets by the KQ. These 3 volumes contain the three "Razumovsky" quartets (one on each volume) together with three of Beethoven's other string quartets. Most recently, based on these 3 outstanding CDs, I purchased Volume 3 of this series (Quartets Nos. 5 and 6) and was so pleased that I have decided to purchase the remaining CDs of the full cycle by the KQ.

The musicianship on this CD is superb and the sound is crystal clear, from the incredibly slow and soulful opening notes of the first movement, to the passionate robust vitality of the fourth and final movement of the third Razumovsky quartet that begins this CD. The four movements of the second string quartet (Op. 127) are performed with equally sublime musicianship.

The CD booklet has information on the KQ and two different essays, one in English and one in French, both of which are extensive, well-written, and informative, containing historical information and a musical analysis of each of the two quartets.

This is an excellent CD at a very reasonable price. I would gladly have paid twice as much for this recording. In fact, it's almost unbelievable that a CD of such high quality is available at such a low price. Very highly recommended.

emotionally charged, romantic Beethoven.......2002-06-06

The Kodaly Quartet's playing of this music is insightful, incisive, emotional, and *gasp* duly romantic. This recording is at the top of my list for these pieces. Naxos continues to amaze me with talent of their musicians and the sound of their recordings. Get this disc.

excellent and exciting performances these two quartets.......2000-03-10

I am familiar with many recordings of the Beethoven string quartets (vegh, hungarian, emerson, italiano, tokyo, guarneri, budapest, abq), but this may be my favorite performance of op. 127. Vigorous or searching as the music requires, with excellent recorded sound. A real treat. btw, I had earlier tried the op. 18 numbers 1 and 2 by the Kodaly on naxos and was not pleased - poor sound quality.

Beethoven string quartets.......2006-04-15

In seeking to replace my venerable set of the Beethoven Quartets recorded quite some time ago by Sandor Vegh and his band, I have heard many (and bought some) different sets of these works but have been disatisfied with them all in one regard or another. The Vegh Quartet offerings suffer from poor recording quality, occasional "off-stage" noises and lapses of intonation but their performances are just so . . musical. I still occasionally play them.

However, my search ended with the Kodaly Quartet to whom I was introduced through their Naxos set of the Haydn quartets. Thanks to the absolutely first class recording quality of the Naxos CDs and my liking for the character of the Kodaly Quartet, I own not only the Haydn collection but also the complete sets of Schubert and Beethoven by the same performers. I cannot imagine anyone not being entirely satisfied with these really excellent performances. Vol.3 is a good place to start.

Yet, although the KQ had been together for a quarter century at the time they made this recording, the performance of these four highly talented musicians sounds fresh and exciting, as if they were exploring the magic of these quartets for the first time, and truly conveys their passionate enthusiasm and love for this music.

The sound engineering on this digital recording is first-rate, with a bright, clear sound that gives a feeling of immediacy and presence to the instruments. Although I somewhat prefer the deeper, richer sound of the Cleveland Quartet in its recording of these same quartets, I very much like the sound of the Kodaly Quartet as well and enjoy listening to the same quartets performed by both groups.

The allegro movements on this CD have rhythmic energy and vitality, while the adagio movements are played with a beautiful tenderness, pathos, depth and sensitivity to every nuance of every note that allows the listener to savor every note.

The musicianship of the KQ is superb, from the bright, charming, dance-like opening passages of the first movement of String Quartet No. 5 to the final, graceful poetry of the final movement of String Quartet No. 6, with the musicians conveying the full range of emotions in this musical microcosm: wistfulness, anxiety, brooding intensity that builds in tension, followed by a sudden shift to playfulness and elegance.

I am very highly pleased with this volume 3, as well as volumes 4, 5 and 6 of this series of the complete Beethoven string quartets by the KQ, which I have also heard. Based on this most recent purchase of a CD by the KQ of Beethoven's string quartets, I've decided to get their whole cycle.

The CD booklet has information on the KQ and three different essays (NOT translations of each other - I have enough rudimentary knowledge of German to see that the essay in the CD insert is different from the one in English), one in English, one in German, and one in French. I don't know fluent German but did read the essay in French and found it, like the English essay, to be well-written and informative, containing historical information and a musical analysis of each of the two quartets.

This is an excellent CD at a very reasonable price. I would gladly have paid twice as much for it. In fact, it's almost unbelievable that a CD of such high quality is available at such a low price. And on top of everything else, even the CD insert is excellent! Very highly recommended.

Technically flawless, but not emotional.......2002-06-07

The Julliard String Quartet does a magnificent job of presenting Beethoven's material in a technically perfect performance. To a student, this would be the place to start. Classical music walks a tightrope between precision and passion. The death of classical music will be when it is no longer fun. In this recording the Julliard String Quartet seems to be working, not enjoying, the music.

The material is, of course, top notch, the middle-period string quartets being my favorites. This was the point in Beethoven's life when he found his own voice (the "Eroica" period it has been called) but before his tragic loss of hearing.

The Busch Quartet does a better job of performing the music, but the recordings are at least 50 years old, so the sound quality is somewhat compromised.

A Beautiful and Passionate Recording.......2006-05-29

When the two quartets on this CD were recorded, the Kodaly Quartet ("KQ") had been playing together for over twenty years. It shows. What is evident on this CD is the perfect cohesion of the musicians; they clearly have an intimate knowldedge of the score, have played these two quartets many times over the years, and thoroughly enjoy playing together. Yet, although the KQ had been together for more than two decades at the time they made this recording, the performance of these four highly talented musicians sounds fresh and exciting, as if they were exploring the magic of these quartets for the first time, and truly conveys their passionate enthusiasm and love for this music.

The sound engineering on this digital recording is first-rate, with a bright, clear sound that gives a feeling of immediacy and presence to the instruments. Although I somewhat prefer the deeper, richer sound of the Cleveland Quartet in its recording of these same quartets, I very much like the sound of the KQ as well and enjoy listening to the same quartets performed by both groups.

The allegro movements on this CD have rhythmic energy and vitality, while the adagio movements are played with a beautiful tenderness, pathos, depth and sensitivity to every nuance of every note that allows the listener to savor every note.

The musicianship of the KQ is superb, from the bright, charming, dance-like opening passages of the allegro movements to the graceful poetry of the adagio movements, with the musicians conveying the full range of emotions in this musical microcosm: wistfulness, anxiety, brooding intensity, playfulness, and elegance. I am very highly pleased with Volume 2, as well as all of other volumes of this series of the complete Beethoven string quartets by the KQ.

The CD booklet has information on the KQ and a well-written informative essay, containing historical information and a musical analysis of each of the two quartets.

This is an excellent CD at a very reasonable price. It's wonderful that a CD of such high quality is available at such a low price. Very highly recommended.

I've owned this set for two years now and have really tried to get into it. Initially it sounds beautifully recorded and fast paced, but after 15 minutes I surrender. The recording sounds bright with very little emotion. Well played, but no soul. If you want to hear how completely different the same music can sound, listen to the Cleveland Quartet doing Beethoven. I have bought a number of the Emersons CDs and sadly the pattern in my opinion is much the same - exceptional musicans displaying how well they can perform. I actually think their "fast/in your face" style would be engaging in a live performance, but I've yet to hear an Emerson CD that I'd call a first recommendation.

I'm glad I've never seen these guys in a live performance because I would have been the heckler who got up and yelled, "Hey, boys, what's the hurry? Got a plane to catch?" Mind you, they play all the notes and stuff, it's the tempi that drove me up the wall. This music is difficult enough as it is without having it fly by you at breakneck speed. The Emersons are obviously in love with their own virtuosity -- isn't that special -- but the point of performance is to let the music speak for itself. Nuff said. 2 stars is generous. P.S. I can't stand the Toscanini, Gardner crowd either, but you probably guessed that.

Absolutely beautiful!!.......2000-09-04

The Middle Quartets resemble a product of Beethoven's second period. A period of departure from the Haydn + Mozart influences with compositions such as Fidelio and the symphony in E flat, "Eroica". Also, from this period is the misterious sonata "Hammerklavier", although someone would argue that "Hammerklavier" was the first product of the third period.

The first three Strings Quartets here are the very famous "Razumowsky Quartets", named after Count Andreas Razowmovsky -the Russian Embassador to Vienna-. They are here complete, in a special edition issued by Deutsche Grammophon in celebration of Beethoven's 100th. anniversary. Useless to say, DG is using here everything they could possibly do to get a product with an outstanding sound and presence and performance. To me, the sound from the media is as important as the rendition itself of the musicians. After all, this is not a Live Presentation you are attenting to.

The "Razumovsky" Quartets were followed a few years later by Opus 74, also called "The Harp" and a year later or so, Opus 95. They are both here included. Pretty good job by DG and a Great Performance by the Emerson Quartet!

The Emerson String Quartet is a premier ensemble of the United States, in particular, and the world of music and humanity in general, since they have championed many noble and humanitarian causes in addition of their immaculate performances. In this Double CD, the have given their heart and made one of their most outstanding performances according to the Critics.

In summary: This CD is historically and melodically very important: The Razumowsky Quartets represent a major shift in Beethoven's musical direction. Secondly, the sound of the CD is just wonderful, absolutely beautiful!, and finally, but not less importantly, the rendition of the Emerson String Quartet is just incomparable. To my opinion, this is a "Must Have" Compac Disc, where the 100th anniversary of this towering genious is celebrated generously and without any reserve. You will love this CD!!!!
