5 out of 5 stars Soviet Army Band & Chorus aren't taking any prisoners!.......2007-05-12

If you enjoy a good stiring martial male chorus then spend some time with these guys. They're all graduates of Soviet musical acadamies and any one of them could have graced the top opera houses of the world. You don't have to know any Russian to appreciate this CD. The songs are glorious (just don't translate them -- machine guns, death to foes, etc.), and will make you want to march on Berlin all over again.

5 out of 5 stars Good music........2007-03-09

I had heard a few songs by the Red Army Choir in the past and happened upon this CD set a while back, I found it to be far better than I had hoped and would reccoment it to anyone who enjoys Russian folk music, choir in general, and cultural items from when Russia was still the Soviet Union.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2007-02-27

I'm so glad I stumbled onto this.

Spirited, committed, manly singing. Soul-shaking stuff! The ensemble is incisive; soloists are marvelous. The folk melodies are enchanting. The songs--and the singers--are bound up in the cultural fabric of the Cossacks, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky...on and on.., Chekhov, Trotsky, Nabakov... This music conveys the great romantic, dignified, boistrous soul of the Russian People. (Loosely speaking. Some members of the chorus were presumably of other nationalities once part of the Soviet Union. And some of the songs are not Russian).

I don't speak Russian, but listening to this makes me wish I did. What a beautiful-sounding language it is.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-02-22

Even though I cannot speak Russian, the quality of this choral group is beyond excellent. Many of these pieces are extremely moving and stirring. The rendering of the Soviet anthem and the song "Let's Go" (V'put) come to my mind. "Let's Go" became a huge hit in Russia when it was featured in a movie about the Great Patriotic War, and indeed, hearing it - you can well imagine ranks upon ranks of hard-eyed, grim-faced Soviet soldiers striding into battle against the Wehrmacht.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate collection.......2004-06-15

Excellent performance by the choir and the orchestra. The grandeur, the charm, and the romance! Great collection of songs, sure to bring back memories!

4 out of 5 stars Voices Full of Emotion.......2005-12-19

Once you hear this chorus...whether under the Red Army Choir or Soviet Army Choir banner...you will be addicted. I certainly am. This is not the best disc available on Amazon, but it is unique in that it showcases all Russian songs (since the chorus was a "national" choir, recordings done in London, Paris, etc. frequently contain songs from other countries). And while there may be better and more professional recordings, of this choir and more professional bands, these soldiers succeed in achieving a wide range of color with their vocal talent on this recording. A great bargain.

2 out of 5 stars Sound quality.......2004-07-06

The songs that are chosen on this CD are excellent. The problem, the sound recording is not great. It is clear, but when the choir sings in a low tone, it is simply cannot be heard.

4 out of 5 stars A Trip to Soviet Russia.......2004-03-18

In the 1970's, it seemed that defectors from the USSR made headlines in American newspapers every day. When a dancer defected, it was always believed that artistic freedom was the cause. When writers defected, it was due to the controversy surrounding their works. Athletes were usually viewed as wanting a taste of the good life, but when the Red Army Choir defected, it was a sweet victory for the west. These people were the symbol of all the USSR stood for and sang anthems praising the Soviets, yet they longed for freedom. We loved it when they defected.

Even though many of the songs performed by the ensemble praised the virtues of the Soviet Union, western audiences love the group. No it was not due to be soft on Communism. The group had a sound that was addictive and possessed terrific musical gifts, all of which can be found in this recording.

Listening to this recording is almost nostalgic now that the Soviet Union is no longer, but the recording has a certain appeal. It includes all the favorites including Meadowlands (Polyushku pole), Dark Eyes, Moscow Nights, and the Volga Boatman's Song, probably the best piece on the recording. The ensemble performs well together, the band give the music a distinct sound, and while the soloists are not perfect, the imperfections somehow seem appropriate.

There are more expensive recordings by this ensemble, but this budget CD is not just well worth the price, it is actually one of the best available.

4 out of 5 stars Good Value.......2003-11-03

Considering the number of classic songs and the price, you really can't go wrong here. like another poster, i was a bit dissapointed by some very low music in some selections. but for the most part, the quality is quite good and the music is a very nice way to begin to understand and learn about the Russian people.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not perfect.......2003-01-19

This is a very good CD, and the music really captures the power and total authority of the Soviet state. It is very moving music on one hand, and also really reflects the situation of the Russian workingmen living under this tyranny. This CD would get 5 stars, but there are a few portions where the sound is so soft that it cannot be heard, such as at the beginning of the sixth track. This is the only problem with the CD worth noting, the CD is done by the Red Army choir, and the songs are virtually all made of of the huge band & choir, Soviet power music that we all have come to know and love. I do recommend this CD strongly.

5 out of 5 stars amazing, this is a must for any metallian, do not overlook this, pure power metal mastery.......2007-03-31

hello fellow metallians, god i love this band. dark moor fit nicely along side bands like dragonland, freternia, vhaldemar, arwen, vision divine, cryonic temple, highlord, axenstar and so on. this has to be one of the most talented bands in power metal that i have heard in a very long time. i think dark moor made the best line up change that they ever could have. they dropped the female vocals which were not bad but were not as awesome as their new singer, this guy has such range, the way he sings is amazing, listen to the first song before the seal. this band writes amazing hook laden riffs with mellodic vocals and choruses that revolve in your head for days. the sing along choruses and amazing riffs along with the cool keyboards and light symphonics are more than enough to satisfy my metal cravings.the last album titled dark moor was awesome as well and had the same male singer, that cd is awesome , it was a little more symphonic and or epic. on this album they have went with more of a straight forward sound and added some awesome choruses and catchy lyrics. the 8th song beyond the sea is superb, i cant get enough of it. #8 along with#1 are the top songs here and could be hit singles, not to mention that the other tunes on here are awesome as well. i would love to hear dark moor remake their first 2 cds with their new singer, sort of like iced earth did on days of purgatory where they had mat barlow redo all their old classic songs. that would be very cool, and if any of the band members happen to read this review please consider doing that. we metallians would surely eat it up. i am eagerly awaiting my pre orderd copy of the new album tarot. i can not wait to get that album. but for now i will continue to crank this bad boy and i must say that all you true metallians out there are in for a real treat when you get your hands on this album, and dont pass up the last album titled dark moor, because it to deserves a place in your list of top metal albums. my metal collection over the years has reached a staggering 1600+ all true metal cd's and there is not one of them i dont enjoy and love, but this is with out question in my top 20 cds of all time. metallians enjoy, sit back crank this baby up and rejoice at how great power metal can be, espescially when in the hands of masters like dark moor, your brother in metal, brandon whitson 25 of north carolina.

3 out of 5 stars .......2005-09-04

This is heavy metal that's pretty laid-back and ear-friendly. At times it can be very majestic, which is when this Spanish band shines even more, and at other times the material sounds very straightforward, which makes it predictable. The verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure is applied firmly on most songs, but Dark Moor does it with such nobility. Mandatory ballads like "Green eyes" do not sound forced or romantic, which is a plus unlike many metal bands out there experimenting with their softer sides. Romero's singing accentuates the music very nicely. It doesn't require him to scream or hit long-range notes; it simply gets the job done according to what the music calls for. Tracks like "The silver key" and the title track itself are very traditional, and the use of keyboards here and there add color to the music. This is recommended listening for those relaxing Sunday afternoons, but also expect top-notch musicianship.

4 out of 5 stars they changed..........2005-06-30

First off let me just say that this band does not sound like rhapsody. I dont know why people think that cause they dont at all. This album changed quite a bit, there is no chick vocals that im aware of. This album is really concentrated on time and is a bit slower on tempo. Dont get me wrong its not all slow i just mean that it is showing best that this band makes masterpeice albums. If you like this bands older stuff and if your really into the girl vocals then watch out because this album is a bit differant, but strives into patience and perfection.

5 out of 5 stars "Eloquent, Exquisite, Exciting".......2004-08-18

"Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!

5 out of 5 stars A Gem!.......2002-10-17

This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.

5 out of 5 stars Cinematic, epic, dark prog.......2005-05-31

After nearly four long years, Beyond Twilight has emerged with a new album. Their previous disc The Devil's Hall of Fame with Jorn Lande on vocals was a stunning record, so it caused quite some stress when it was announced that Lande had left and was replaced by a new singer: American vocalist Kelly Sundown Carpenter from the band Outworld. If you were a fan of Lande's vocals in Beyond Twilight, worry not, Carpenter is an absolutely perfect fit for the position. The tone of his voice and his phrasing are highly similar to Lande's, which is great. There are moments on the album, unless you look in the CD booklet, you wouldn't know it's not Jorn Lande singing. Carpenter does an excellent job; he sings passionately and will easily convince everyone that he is the perfect choice.

Finn Zierler, the man behind Beyond Twilight, is still responsible for most of the songwriting on this disc, which is darker than ever, more progressive and more cinematic. Seemingly written locked in a dark attic, the dirty streets of London and near a cold lake, Section X is the continuation of Beyond Twilight's debut concept, and it kicks off with a very similar theme. There is also an informative and quite interesting storyline printed in the booklet. Even though I can't say I'm too impressed by the concept, neither was I by the one in the previous album. It's more Zierler's unique understanding of composition and creating thick, layered soundscapes that draw me to the sound and style of Beyond Twilight. Once again the production on this album is huge, thanks to Zierler's cooperation with Tommy Hansen during the mixing stages. This album is more of progressive tinged disc with sweeping arrangements and numerous emotional twists. Jacob Hansen's addition to the fold also serves this purpose, and his presence is easily noticeable. Give a close listen to the way the guitars slowly soar above Zierler's piano on "Sleeping Beauty" and how they fade into infinity as if the wind carries them away. This song also features guest vocalist Truls Haugen whose clean singing exchanges spots with Carpenter's more aggressive style. The big chorus filled with Latin lyrics is a reference to the first Beyond Twilight album, except that the female choir singing it is a lot more effective this time around.

New vocalist Kelly Sundown Carpenter takes on many different roles through the album. From the most haunting melody lines pulled out of the depths of hell that permeat "The Path of Darkness", the gruff and enraged singing on "Shadow Self", the cold spoken passages on "The Dark Side", or even the more multi-octave hitting screams on the 9-minute closing title track, Carpenter makes this album as amazing as the highly acclaimed debut, and certainly proves to be a fantastic addition to prog metal singers. Once the debut Outworld disc sees the light of day, it will be a headturner, mark my words.

There is a mindblowing instrumental track titled "Portrait F in Dark Waters", a classical intermezzo that starts out lush and laid-back, but quickly picks up and ventures into a dark musical territory displaying Zierler's ethereal piano and keyboard work merged with a great sense of orchestration - you must hear it, as I consider the composition presented here much better crafted than the instrumental pieces on the debut album. Zierler's tone is distinctive in all the songs, as he implements various progressive elements in the songs backed up by powerful twin guitars and a solid rhythm section. Best exemplified on the title track, each instrument weaves its way through the music delicately, laying down subtle odd time signatures without letting go of the dark atmosphere this album is intended to possess. Note the way the keyboards subtly morph into an Egyptian-themed arpeggiated guitar melody during the breakdown that ultimately leads to the dramatic finale. It might strike you speechless.

Beyond Twilight is back! Let's hope we won't have to wait another four years for their third album. But then if that's what it takes to create epic and soulful music like this, that's cool with me. Both Beyond Twilight albums are essential for dark prog metal fans.

Dub Chamber is the third chapter in bassist-producer Bill Laswell's Sacred System trilogy. Like its predecessors (Chapter One and, aptly, Chapter Two), Dub Chamber incorporates elements of ambient jazz, world percussion, and dub reggae. Two tracks, "Cybotron" and "Devil Syndrome," are constructed loosely around the central riff from Bob Marley & the Wailers' "Could You Be Loved." British bassist Jah Wobble lends his experimental postpunk imprimatur to the former, while on the later, jazz keyboardist Craig Taborn lays down some electric piano reminiscent of former Laswell client Herbie Hancock . Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær adds an icy ECM vibe to "Beyond the Zero," and guitarist Nicky Skopelitis is also on hand. Yet, like so many studio productions that attempt to redefine dub apart from the immediacy of its original Jamaican context, it all adds up to something less than the sum of its parts. There's just no substitute for starting with a real song, even when the intent is sonic deconstruction. --Rick Mitchell

Album Description

This new project from legendary producer/bassist Bill Laswell goes far into extending the concept of dub, incorporating Indian rhythms and tonalities, electronic jazz, drum and bass, ambient, hip hop and beyond.

Although dub influenced, it is not limited to dub's reggae history originally created by King Tubby, Lloyd “Prince Jammy” James, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Scientist and the other Jamaican dub masters. Originally created to fulfill the necessity of the B-side or version of the top exposure original A-side, or potential hit side. The musicians featured on Dub Chamber 3 are exceptional and internationally known for their musicianship and avant-gardism. Norway's Nils Petter Molvaer on processed trumpet is known for his groundbreaking work on the European based ECM label. Molvaers' “Khmer”, released in 1999 is one of the biggest sellers in ECM's 35-year history. Original P.I.L. bassist Jah Wobble is widely acclaimed and noted for his work with Orb, Baaba Maal, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel and The Invaders of The Heart. Nicky Skopelitis, the Greek/American guitarist is a mainstay with Material, Ekstasis, Sly & Robbie and Ginger Baker. Keyboardist Craig Taborn has gained recognition for his work with Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra. Karsh Kale is currently drumming for Talvin Singh's group. Certainly an all-star cast gathered in the studio to cook up some new style dub. Dub Chamber 3 is Laswell's third release for ROIR and completes the best selling Sacred System trilogy. This is dub for the space-age and a major step in its evolutionary influence on today's electronic music culture. Futurist dub that creates new maps of time, intangible sound sculptures and sacred sites for the mind, body and spirit. Dub chamber 3 is for all dub lovers, drum and bass fanatics, ambient seekers, and avant-garde hip hoppers and electronic Miles Davis “Bitches Brew” fans.

5 out of 5 stars good dub album.......2003-03-01

This is a very good dub album, have a lot of experimentation. Bill Laswell is an innovator.

2 out of 5 stars Cheese.......2002-09-08

I have Sacred System 1 & 2 and Radioaxiom: A Dub Transmission and i like them all, but i think he went overboard on this one. Track 2 Cybotron is pretty good, but definitely not worth the price of the entire cd.

5 out of 5 stars A Dub/Jazz/World Music Stew.......2002-07-01

The chain of reviews for Dub Chamber 3 aptly shows it to be a love-it-or-hate-it affair. What I suspect attracts or repels people about Bill Laswell's work is that he usually mixes and synthesizes disparate musical styles that are rarely combined.

If you really love dub, you may not want it blended with jazz, other "world" musics, and approached like chamber music. If you think dub should only sound like Lee "Scratch" Perry, this will surely appall you. George Clinton insists on getting his funk uncut. This dub has been "stepped on" big time -- for reasons of artistic ambition, not as a way to water it down.

If the idea of dub as one of a number of musical pallettes used to paint a portrait sounds interesting, this could work for you. Dubby bass, Milesian trumpet washes & jabs, synths, guitar with a little Pat Metheny in it, an Eastern feel to some of the percussion coexist here. Everyone doesn't think that's a good idea. It works for me. Highly recommended, as long as you know what you're getting yourself into.

1 out of 5 stars flim flam dubs.......2001-10-31

mr. laswell needs to leave dub music alone . he fails miserebly
to make the connection of dub music maker to dub music listener.
the essence of dub is totally lost within his socalled musical
ramblings.this cd is the perfect example of the music industries ability to pimp "musical garbage".

5 out of 5 stars Best Laswell disc I own.......2001-06-14

Granted... I have only heard snippets of mp3's, bought Imaginary Cuba (letdown), and Sacred System, Chapter 2 (letdown... but barely). Still, this one is great. I'm still checking out the others!

5 out of 5 stars A solid release!.......2005-06-07

Although Dark Moor certainly isn't new to the whole melodic metal scene, I think it's safe to say that the new "era" of the band started with their self-titled release with new vocalist Alfred Romero. Although the fan-base of Dark Moor was somewhat divided between the old, neo-classical sound and the new, more straight-forward sound, I can safely say that I prefer the new to the old.

Beyond The Sea, Dark Moor's fifth full-length release, is easily my favorite. One of the first things I noticed about the album was the great amount of balance and diversity present. There is no single element that is overdone or blown out of proportion - every element, from the speed to the symphonics to the heaviness, are used with class. It's rare to find an album like this (in which I am not downing bands that focus on one thing, for I love them too), and it's a pleasant surprise when one does roll around.

As for the structure and songs present on the album, I have to that the whole record flows especially well, with some definite highlights, such as the epic The Silver Key, the mid-paced title-track or the classic power metal number Going On. Every song has its own identity, whilst also possessing the overall identity of Dark Moor.

To sum it all up, if you're a fan of melodic metal with a fair amount of diversity and class, I highly recommend Dark Moor's latest masterpiece Beyond The Sea. You may find yourself quite surprised as I did!

5 out of 5 stars typical Steve Bell album with a twist.......2006-06-27

Steve's daughter sings on several of the tracks and his sons join him for "59th St. Bridge Song"- one of our favorites on the album. This album has something for everyone though. Worshipful music that is also thought-provoking.
