It'd be hard to imagine a happier wish than the one this jazz vocal legend offers her listeners on this urbane-yet-homey collection of holiday favorites. The First Lady of Song recorded these tunes in 1960, at the peak of her interpretive powers. As such, she puts her singular stamp on everything from a sultry vamp like "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" to the sweet and cozy "The Christmas Song." Even potentially shopworn standards like "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" sound fresher when they're coming from Ella Fitzgerald. --David Sprague

Keeping my kid happy in the car........2007-01-17
I love this cd.... My 2 1/2 year old can't get enough of Ella and her christmas carols. Not a big fan of the slow songs so this was perfect. My daughter is still singing them and christmas is over.
Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas .......2007-01-16
This CD is a must have if you are an Ella fan. I am a big fan of Christmas music and own approximately 20 holiday CD's from various artists. I usually rotate listening to the CD's throughout the holiday season. I purchased this one to add to my collection. This CD was the only one that I listened to this year. I absolutely could not stop listening to it!
If THIS doesn't jingle your bells, nothing will !!!.......2006-12-06
Ella Fitzgerald puts her own stamp on classic Christmas songs on this CD. The songs have a distinctly jazzy feel to them and Ella's voice is strong, vibrant and full of energy as she swings through each song. When the CD ends you want more because every note from Ella is flawless. The musical arrangements are also nicely done.
The CD starts with a jazzy version of "Jingle Bells." "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is performed by Ella in a happier style than the way this song is usually performed; and Ella's touching and poignant rendition of "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" is sure to move even the hardest of hearts. Awesome!
Other joyful songs on this CD include "Sleigh Ride;" "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!;" and "Frosty The Snowman." Ella is ably assisted by a choir on several tracks including "Frosty The Snowman;" "Christmas Island" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town."
The LP version of this CD ends with the timeless and melancholy "White Christmas." However, Ella performs this song in a manner that is so singularly beautiful that you just can't help but feel optimistic instead of blue. Bravo, Ella!
The CD version of this album offers much more. "The Secret Of Christmas" is a reflective ballad about celebrating friendships; Ella sings this one song with Russ Garcia and his band. "Christmas Island" is a swinging song about celebrating the holiday on a tropical island in the Caribbean or the Pacific. The backup choir again enhances this song and they back up Ella very smoothly.
There are even three alternate takes of songs on this CD that are released here for the first time. We get unused takes of "The Christmas Song;" "White Christmas" and "Frosty The Snowman." This is a great bonus.
The liner notes include an extensive essay by Will Friedwald; the original artwork for the back cover of the record album jacket; song credits and another short essay about the history of the Verve Music Group.
I highly recommend this CD for Ella's fans as well as anyone who enjoys Christmas music. There is an undeniably jazzy flavor to this album that sets it apart from the rest; jazz enthusiasts will have a blast listening to this CD at holiday time. Frank DeVol does a great job with his orchestra and this also adds a big band flavor to these recordings. You can't go wrong with this timeless CD by Ella Fitzgerald; the Christmas songs are all classics performed with great sensitivity and even the lesser known ballads are exquisite. Get this CD, turn up the volume and enjoy!
Ella Swings Through Christams And Takes You Along For The Ride.......2005-10-05
Ella is once again in great form for this set of Holiday tunes. Norman Granz, her long-time manager definitely knew what he was doing pairing Ella's outstanding vocals with great orchestrations of some very well known Christmas songs. The result was a hit from the get-go!
Even though the recordings that this CD was compiled from are over 25 years old, they stand the test of time and sound as rich and vibrant as they did when they were originally recorded. The remastering of the of the collection to 24 bit digital format was well worth the effort.
With that said, it was inevitable that Ella would get her hands on the material and make some of these songs her own. Most notably is, what Are You Doing New Years Eve, for which her version is the one most played by radio stations during the holidays year after year.
Ella's rendition of Jingle Bells is superb and injects new life into the song. I love the fast pace and the swinging overdrive towards the end of the song.
Ella also turns in some great versions of The Christmas Song, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Frosty The Snowman.
An additional pleasure on this CD are the alternate takes included of The Christmas Song, White Christmas and Frosty The Snowman. Ellas has fun with these takes and it shows.
All in all , when it comes to getting a textbook interpretation of how a song writer intended a song to be sung, no one comes close to Ella. She is the benchmark from which others model themselves and does not disappoint on this CD.
I cannot imagine the holidays without having this CD in my CD player since I bought the CD.
Ella Swings With Santa and Friends.......2004-11-10
Ella is perfection. This pairing of Ella and Christmas is beyond wonderful! My parents had one of those old compilation Christmas albums from the 70's (you know, the kind you could get really cheap at hardware and tire stores around the holidays)and it had Ella's version of Sleigh Ride on it. That was my first introduction to Ella. I was hooked, and I've become a life-long fan.
When this CD originally came out in the early 90's, I bought it and fell in love with Ella all over again. Then, when it was remastered and beefed up with extra tracks a few years ago, I bought it again. And I still love every minute of it. (My personal favorite is the laid-back jazz version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. It's much less depressing than the standard take that other singers have given us.)
A word about the "Alternate Takes" at the end of the CD: With the exception of Frosty, these are completely different recordings from the ones on the original album. The alternate versions of The Christmas Song and White Christmas were recorded at a different time with a different orchestra. The arrangements make a nice companion to the versions found on the original album, but they aren't simply "Alternate Takes" from the same recording session. Personally, I like hearing Ella sing the same song with completely different arrangements.
And then there's the alternate Frosty. Yes, it is annoying. But if you know a little about Ella, you know she had a great sense of humor and she loved kids. This wasn't the first time she sang in her "little girl" voice, and I'm sure it wasn't the last. Although it's not my favorite, taken in context I think it's a truly wonderful gem. And if a 6-year-old kid hears her singing Frosty and becomes a life-long fan, then it's definitely worth it to have this version included!

What A Treat..........2007-01-23
I listened to this CD all during the holiday's this past year... Ella Fitzgerald is certainly the Lady of Song... she has such a unique voice; and everything she sings is just so classy; and takes you back in time... I love this CD and wholeheartedly recommend it!
Gimmick Songs Hurt This Album.......2005-12-14
I know that I am swimming against the tide on this one, but I was sort of dissapointed by this album. I am a huge Ella Fitzgerald fan. I think she is the greatest female American singer of the Twentieth Century.
When she sings the standard Christmas songs in the generally accepted manner, her performances are simply superb. What's unfortunate is that the producers of this album wanted to give it a "swing" touch. Her swing take on some of the standard Christmas songs unfortunately end up sounding gimmicky. The single most dissapointing track on this album is the alternative take of Frosty the Snowman. Ella does it with an annoying kid's voice and it is absolutely atrocious. I was so surprised. This is the only time in my opinion, where Ella has absolutely blown a song. It goes to prove that even a genius can make musical mistakes.
Some of the individual songs are real classics. My suggestion is to purchase the classic songs from I-Tunes and avoid purchasing the whole album.
A TREASURE! ELLA'S CHRISTMAS GIFT TO YOU!.......2005-10-28
I CANNOT IMAGE ANY HOLIDAY SEASON WITHOUT THIS GEM! I LIKE THIS BETTER THAN THE EXPANDED EDITION RELEASED IN 2003 OR THEREABOUTS.
Ella's voice is pure magic. She was in her prime in 1960, when this wonderful collection was originally released. I especially like the fact that this is a strictly secular collection of music. There is a great unified feeling to this set. [For me, albums that mix sacred AND secular Christmas music often don't work that well.]
What's included here is a handful of holiday classics done in a jazzy style, as arranged by Frank DeVol. The only clunker [and it's a doozy!] is the Christmas blues tune.
"Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" One of the most delightful renditions of this classic ever. Ella sounds like she was having a ball.
"Sleigh Ride," is a pure jazzy delight. Ella's jazz sensibility is in full swing here. She dispenses with the "There's a birthday party at the home of Farmer Grey" section of the song, to excellent effect, actually.
"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," is rendered as a hopeful song of expectation, rather than the sad, "missing you" way that it is most frequently performed. Another strongly jazzy presentation.
"Winter Wonderland." Ella swings this one beautifully. One of my favorites in this set.
"White Christmas" and "The Christmas Song [Chestnuts Roasting...]" are performed in a very easy style, while most other singers render these in an overwrought, "hear me hit these tough notes," fashion. Understated, but very effective and enjoyable.
"Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer." Ella has a lot of fun with this one, and does an "original" little vamp in the middle..."Hang your nose down, ROO-DY, hang your nose and fly...You know, there's Dasher and Dancer..."
"What Are You Doing New Year's Eve." Ella's version just might be the definitive one. A rather tender, longing rendition.
"Frosty The Snowman" and "Jingle Bells" are just fine, both featuring a supporting chorale. "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," is even better, jazzier, and features an intro verse I hadn't heard before this version.
BELONGS IN EVERY MUSIC-LOVING HOME. DESERVES TO BE ENJOYED DURING EACH HOLIDAY SEASON.
Ella does really swing.......2004-12-04
Incredibly swinging big band, brilliant arrangements and Ella's smooth, perfectionate singing makes this album surely one of the best Christmas albums ever. You can just enjoy the jazz, the Christmas songs, Ella's grooove or everything together, it works!
not necessarily a must-have.......2003-12-27
I hate to disagree with so many reviewers, but I definitely don't think this collection is worth owning. I am a huge Ella fan, and own almost all of the songbooks, but this collection doesn't seem to capture the magic of Ella's voice the way some of those other albums do. I bought it, thinking no Ella album could be disappointing, but I was unfortunately wrong. The recordings seem tossed off and don't allow her voice to be fully appreciated. I admit that I generally prefer Ella's ballads to the more up-tempo jazz numbers, so I may simply be biased against this collection. But I find that Christmas songs by Bing Crosby and Burl Ives work better and are more universally loved because the songs compliment their voices more.
If you must own everything Ella ever recorded, by all means, buy this album. But for the more casual Ella fan, I think that Ella's talents are wasted on most of these songs, so I recommend that you invest in one of her songbooks and a copy of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" instead.

Customer Reviews:
Lacking greatly in swing.......2005-01-20
I'll second JohnSloan's comments. Not a whole lot of swinging here. As he says, the best cuts are the ones from Nutcracker. The Teagarden version of "Christmas Song" won't make anyone forget Nat Cole's...or Mel Torme's for that matter.
For $5.98 it's not pricey...it just depends on how much you want to spend on the 4 tunes (the first number is OK) of note here. You may want to get something else if you're paying new price, but a used copy of this would probably be worthwhile.
This is a nice big band CD.......2004-08-17
While I agree with the previous poster, that this really isn't a swing cd, it still has some nice songs that you don't ordinarily hear at Christmas. It is a nice cd if you want a change in your christmas music selection. And you can get it for agreat price too!
Doesn't "Swing" as much as it claims to.......2004-01-14
The main selling point for this disc has to be its bargain basement price. I would probably have called it 2 stars if I had paid regular CD prices. The simple fact is, it is not really as "swinging" as its title claims. Some of the tracks are downright dull. The best tracks are the three that are taken from "The Nutcracker" ("Dance of the Suger Plum Fairies" by the Larry Clinton Orchestra, "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" by Red Nichols & His Five Pennies, and "The Nutcracker Suite" by the Les Brown Orchestra. Another worthwhile track is "He'll Be Coming Down the Chimney" by the Guy Lombardo Trio. On the whole, it is about half a swinging big band Christmas.
