This was a very unique item. Fans of the series will enjoy it. At times some of the tracks seem out of place when out of the game, but that's more than made up for by the many powerful and classic tracks that these CD's have. The first CD is more techno-inspired while the second is more operatic. It's good music to do push-ups to or to drive to. Especially the first track of the first CD.

Bought and returned it with the first few minutes after sliding it into the player. The cover art is nice. As for the, um, muzak, I expected something less...fuzzy. Even the player hated it, spitting it out within seconds after tasting the first track.
If any of the original movie scores rate 5 stars, this rates a solid 10 black holes, IMHO.

The title line of this product says Enya (Composer), Roma Enya / Ryan (Composer), Annie / Walsh, Fran / Shore, Howard Lennox (Composer), Howard Shore (Composer), Fran Shore Howard / Walsh (Composer). Had I read the descriptions more closely, I would have seen that the composers were listed in a way that made no sense. Rather, the list merely is composed of the names of the writers, musicians, and composers of the music in Peter Jackson's trilogy, so that someone who is familiar with the music of the trilogy would be deceived into buying this subpar and inadequate product. The trade dress is deceptive enough that it might border on trademark/trade dress infringment of the real stuff.
If you are a fan of the LOTR soundtracks and/or Howard Shore, I would avoid this product and opt for: 1) the official soundtracks of the trilogy; and 2) The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring The Complete Recordings. Let's hope they follow up with the Two Towers and the Return of the King Complete Recordings.

Too bad I can't give this one no stars. This disk is really bad. The performance is by a bland synthesizer "orchestra" without any of the depth or emotion you can find on the movie soundtracks. I would sell this CD back to the music store where I bought it, but then somebody else might be tempted to buy it. No; this disk is headed for the trash bin.

Simply put, this album corrupts Howard Shore's music in the same way the ring tried to corrupt Frodo. The more you listen to it, the more you realize you should have bought the original soundtrack.

I wish I had read the other reviews before buying. 78 minutes of meandering through (and maiming) Howard Shore's fantastic work. No focus, no edge to the playing, themes apparently put together at random. The horns are poorly synthesized and sound pretty cheezy. Spend your money on the movie soundtrack. I wish I had.

If you've never purchased one of these Silva Screen best-of score CDs, let me first say this: unless you're a true film-score nut (like me), don't do it. Just don't. They really aren't terribly good. This one, like most, is played by The city of Prague Philharmonic, and it's not a terribly talented orchestra. They play very flatly, they miss notes, their orchestrator makes odd changes to composers' music. The end result of all this is that if you're familiar with the film versions of the pieces of music they're playing, it can be, frankly, a bit difficult to listen to.

That said, there is one decent -- decent, mind you -- reason to buy this CD. That's for the five-minute track of music from Spielberg's "Duel." It isn't great music, by any means, but if you're a Spielberg fanatic, this is the only release there has ever been (to my knowledge, at least) of music from that movie.

To be fair, not all of the tracks here are poorly done. "Hymn to the Fallen" comes off fairly well, and so does the music from "A.I." and "The Terminal" -- and the "Minority Report" theme is actually quite good. But much of the rest just doesn't sound right, so if you're looking for a quick way to assemble a quality overview of Spielberg music, this isn't the way to go.

That brings me to my final complaint, which is that "The Lost World" is omitted entirely! There were several good themes done for that movie; it was no mere rehash of "Jurassic Park."

For the seriously devoted only.

A must have for "film-score-buff" collectors, including music lovers and anyone who enjoys a little nostalgia now and then...thank you James Fitzpatrick(producer), Reynold da Silva(executive producer) and Silva Screen Classics...it's amazing when one thinks about just how much a part of filmmaking history that Steven Spielberg has been over the last 30 some odd years...listening to this collection will bring back wonderful memories of some of those highlights and then your imagination sets in...just the way we like 'em!

This is probably one of the best compilations of early choral music I have heard, let alone own. A fantastic selection of works, including some modal pieces by composers such as Samuel Barber with his famous "Agnus Dei", creates a very nice variety of complexity. The overall tone of both CDs is very peaceful yet uplifting, and the performers are highly talented and spirited. This is a wonderful and unsurpassed addition to my collection. A must for any lover of early choral works.

I can't see paying full price for a two-CD compensdium, even one as lavish as this package, when all the itmes are samples for promoting Universal's catalog (expect a good representation by Ashkenazy, Rostropovich, Previn, and Gergiev). But the selection is good enough and often rare eough to warrant a buy if the price is low.

As I listened straight through, I was surprised at how unacquainted I actually was with the wide extent of Prokofiev's style. From the very early "Dreams," which could be mistaken for Glazunov through the unfamiliar operas (Betrothal in a Monastery Garden, Semyon Kotko) to the final, sadly diminished works like the Seventh Sym. and the cello concerto, the composer covered every major Russian style of the century. I didn't find any new masterful performances--not that a short excerpt is a good enough trial--but everything here is well performced. Any listener should find something unexpected and intriguing in this two-and-a-half-hour traversal.

    The entire first disc is available on other Silva America CDs, (at the time the star wars songs were the first release, but now they are on Music from the Star Wars saga), the rest on "Space and Beyond" "Space and Beyond 2: Alien Invasion", "The Cult Files" and "Battlestar Galactica A-Z of SciFi/Fantasy TV Themes". The re-recordings are cool but this is mainly a rehash of other cd's, as I said, the entire first cd is available on other Silva collections, and only 9 of the 15 tracks on cd 2 are not available on any other cd i own from Silva. (I don't have Cult Files re-opened or Space and beyond 3, who knows they might be on there)


    Obviously, when this album was originally released, the main appeal was the newly recorded star wars tracks, this cd has become more or less obsolete, its still a nice collection, but if you own the other Silva cd's. you don't really need this.

    No doubt the above composers excel in the world of film music, notice how many John Williams scores appear in this collection. Williams is without a doubt one of the major players in this genre, but there are many other composers who can stand up to his high marks when it comes to bringing the full force of a story through music. One such composer is Henry Mancini, if you ever had any doubts about this mans ability to score any film, whether it be drama, comedy, action or sci-fi...this question is answered here with "LIFEFORCE", gives the audience a cinematic education tightly coiled around directors Tobe Hooper's story of outer space vampires. Within each cue of the film, Mancini's score takes over and we are pleasantly surprised with the results.

    If you're a "film-score-buff", like I am...then this collection from the '50s', '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s is an absolute must. As an added bonus we feature the world renowned ~ The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra with conductors Paul Bateman, Nicholas Dodd and Nic Raine, plus, yes plus the Crouch End Festival Chorus and one of my favorite sopranos Charlotte Kinder. When it comes to releasing compilations of this magnitude, most labels tend to become much safer in their choices, afraid to make a mistake. Silva America takes the risk and it always pays off, this is one of those times ~ looking forward to "The Science Fiction Album Volume 2", gotta love it!
