Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film of Annie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her, Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight in Let Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever!.......2007-04-24

Do I mean the best album or the best singer? You are correct if you said both! I saw Kristin Chenoweth on a PBS show "Broadway's Best at the Pops," (though it was not the first time I had heard her) and decided to check out the offerings here. This is a collection of the kind of music and performances I love. She has a great range, a precise pitch, and a great style that is at the same time true to the music and to herself. In an era when singers try to outdo each other re-interpreting the composer's original work, not usually with great success, she is a blessing!

5 out of 5 stars Kristen Chenowith.......2007-02-26

I bought this CD for the Girl in 14G. Yes, it's that good...

4 out of 5 stars Has its moments.......2007-02-19

After watching Candide endlessly and going to see Ms. Chenoweth in The Apple Tree, I was hungry for something more portable to listen to. At times this fits the bill, but what surprised me the most is how thin her voice comes across on this recording. Perhaps it was the joy of seeing her live that has ruined this listener; perhaps I need to upgrade my aging music system. Then again, maybe the recording is just not as good as Ms. C singing Bernstein or as good as staring at Ms. C command a Broadway stage.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-19

I truly enjoy listening to this CD. Kristin Chenoweth's vocal style and abilities are very well-matched to the songs selected for this album. If you enjoy classic, older-style Broadway/popular tunes, I would highly recommend this CD. Ms. Chenoweth has a bright, expressive voice and does a fantastic job with this material.

As with any full-length CD, there are a couple of songs I am not as crazy about, but that has to do with the songs themselves, not Ms. Chenoweth's vocal performance. Overall, I love this album and have listened to it several times now, since receiving it as a Christmas gift last month.

5 out of 5 stars This woman has what it takes, and then some..........2007-01-12

Kristin Chenoweth brings new life to some timeless Broadways tunes while introducing a few wonderful new ones. This high pitched vocal goddess effortlessly provides for a nearly flawless and easy listening experience. I definitly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys jazz vocals, showtunes, or just a new spin on some old classics.

Album Description

During the early '50s, Peggy Lee rode high on the strength of her own taste into stardom - she was a glamorous beacon whose sultry voice gave her performances a shimmering eroticism. Black Coffee may be the greatest album of her genuine "concept albums." Originally recorded in 1953, Lee turned Black Coffee into a jazz project - something no other mainstream pop singer had done up to that point. It was so successful that three years later, Decca asked her to expand it into the newer 12" format. Many years later, she named this album as her own favorite. The songs in this collection reveal Peggy Lee at her most captivating. Here she displays a versatility which matches her wonderful vitality, emphasizing the quality of her voice as well as the music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An all-time classic.......2007-01-14

I first bought this album in the late fifties. I thought it was great then, and I have not changed that opinion one bit. It is one of my all-time favorites, it never palls, for musicianship, excitement, intimacy, great swing.......It has been called one of the greatest vocal jazz albums and I would absolutely agree with that. The only problem - Miss Lee's other albums don't sound so great alongside this one. A must for any vocal jazz lover, indeed any lover of popular music.

5 out of 5 stars The Intimate Miss Lee.......2006-12-18

I will admit: These are not the best charts of standards I've ever heard. Nor are these the finest back-up musicians I've ever heard. But none of that matters. This is a must-have for any serious vocal jazz collection, because nobody but nobody ever sang more intimately than Peggy Lee.

By that, I don't mean sexually intimately. (Though, I will admit, the way she sings "black coffee" on the title track makes me want to grab her and console her, then see what further liberties are available!) I mean, the way she sings a phrase such as to let you in on her little secret, in a manner that makes you proud to be part of her club.

Consider how she sings "She says" when describing how Moses got fished out of the water in "It Ain't Necessarily So"; or "I got my mink" or "used to be...me" in "When the World Was Young"; or the word "thrill" in "You're My Thrill"; or the way she plays with the word "daddy" in "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Peggy Lee and Lena Horne were both like this in the good old days; and for all the great contemporary female jazz singers, none seem to be able to emulate that intimate quality of these two. No wonder Sinatra was so ga-ga over her!

There is a two-c.d. release of Peggy Lee's with this album name. Don't be confused; this is the c.d. you want. RC

5 out of 5 stars Peggy's best album and one of the "ten greatest vocal jazz albums of all time.".......2006-08-11

Included on many lists as one of the ten greatest vocal jazz albums ever, "Black Coffee", recorded in 1953 and 1956, has always been Peggy Lee's own favorite album. Few listeners will be able to resist her ability to turn a standard into a magic moment in jazz history here, as Lee, a great actress with a song, sets up narrative intros of such drama that she seems to be telling personal stories. She varies the melodies, shifts from major to minor, experiments with phrasing, and totally commits herself to pure jazz.

When she sings "Black Coffee," for example, her changes from major to minor, with a single trumpet (Pete Candoli) echoing or wailing in the background, emphasize her anguish, and every listener will believe her agony, as she sings about being "low to the ground," with "not much heart to fight." "Easy Living," a song-poem celebrating being in love, is so intense it will make everyone wish to have a love like hers. "It Ain't Necessarily So," sung slower than usual, is sexy and suggestive, with a bass that resembles a heartbeat.

Two favorites (though it's hard to choose among all these winners) are "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," the song of a flirt who celebrates her love and wails, even while thinking of straying, and "When the World Was Young," a narrative song of Paris, which echoes the "Marseillaise" in its opening bars, as a woman reminisces about life in Paris, summer in Bordeaux, and the passage of time: "Where is the schoolgirl that used to be me?" Intensely emotional and very personal, Lee's interpretations reflect her confidence and her mature appreciation of lyrics, as, with perfect pitch, she plays with the melodies and soars.

Eight tracks from 1953 are recorded with Pete Candoli (trumpet), Jimmy Rowles (piano), Max Wayne (bass), and Ed Shaughnessy (drums). Four other songs, recorded in 1956, feature a whole different accompaniment--Stella Castellucci (harp), Lou Levy (piano), Bill Pitman (guitar), Buddy Clark (bass), and Larry Bunker on vibes, drums, and percussion. Though some listeners may prefer the trumpet-oriented jazz with Candoli to the harp, guitar, and vibes of the 1956 songs, Lee adapts equally well to both approaches, creating an album which has turned my respect for her talent and perfectionism into enthusiastic love for her spirit, imagination, and creativity. n Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Lady.......2006-05-06

This is in some respects an unlikely assemblage of talents. When's the last time you heard a major popular singer accompanied not by an orchestra or big band, not by a rhythm section (piano, bass, drums), not even by a rhythm section plus tenor saxophone but by a rhythm section plus trumpet? The trumpet player, Pete Candoli (referred to as "Cootie Chesterfield" on the original LP), moreover provides just enough brightness and fire to offset the "cool," low-key approach of Peggy as well as to push this normally controlled, perfectionist performer into some uncharacteristically spontaneous, even surprising, readings of familiar material. Compared to her straight-laced, flawless but stiff and sterile "live" session with George Shearing's trio, this is great jazz singing, as worthy of the description as any recording by a Billie Holiday or Carmen McRae.

As for individual tracks, Peggy makes practically each of these songs the standard by which all other readings of the same tune can be compared (give "I've Got You Under My Skin" to Sinatra-Riddle, but the others I can scarcely "hear" any more when performed by anyone other than Lee). Besides the sultry, bluesy "Black Coffee," listen to her set fire to "Make Room for Daddy," register vulnerability and a hint of pain on the sublime "Easy Living," celebrate life as a "Grand" affair with her swinging anapests on "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," and make you succumb to her alternate gospel on "It Ain't Necessarily So." But for me the highlights are the meditative reading of "When the World Was Young," the whispery, ethereal "You're My Thrill," and the positively sinful "There a Small Hotel" (if a more seductive invitation has ever been offered in music, I have yet to hear it).

Unlike other "torch singers," there are few traces of angst, masochism, and "hard-knocks" in Peggy's storytelling, yet she makes each song stick indelibly. There's something utterly transparent about her approach to her material, a quality that makes you forget she's singing for you rather than conversing with you. She draws you into her intimate circle, making you her privileged confidant.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music.........2005-11-23

Hi everyone I'm a 15 year old Native American, and I love the music of Peggy Lee. I won't go as far as one reviewer and say
Peggy Lee had the 1st Jazz oriented LP with so many African Americans doing thier thang. (why does it seem to bother some
people to give credit where it is really do?) but I will say that Peggy Lee has a unique style, and this CD is just a small
bit of her talent.

The artists gathered together here hail from nations and cultures noted for the growing and export of coffee. As with this CD's companion release, Music from the Tea Lands, one senses the possibility of lucrative product tie-ins, but part of the proceeds from the album are earmarked for charity and any catchy idea that gets the music out there is a good thing. Like the luscious drink itself, the tunes come in many intensities and flavors, ranging from a light-as-air ditty from Peru, to the more complex vocal stylings of Colombia's Claudia Gomez, to Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca's earthy Afro-Cuban Congolese rumba. The album is a lively and fascinating travelogue, making landfall in Cuba, Kenya, Brazil, Uganda, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Peru. As with many other Putumayo projects, aside from its musical pleasures, this set would make an entertaining and educational experience for younger family members. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Suprise!.......2007-01-25

Having just gotten into collecting world music rather than just listening to it on the radio....I am more than pleased with my latest acquisition of Coffee Lands music. The music on this CD is totally mellow. Every song on it is a keeper. If you want something different, this is a CD to consider.

3 out of 5 stars How can you have this CD w/o an Ethiopian contribution.......2007-01-14

Am I missing something? This CD does not have any Ethiopian music? I'm a bit perplexed by that seeing as coffee originated in Ethiopia.

2 out of 5 stars Not strong enough-this compilation is decaf.......2006-06-15

If this album is like coffee,it's decaf. It lacks the punch to keep one awake for an early morning drive.I'd be asleep at the wheel.

I used to have this CD,but I took it to a used CD store.

Its few highlights are Susana Baca,Ernest Ranglin,Thomas Mapfumo,James 'Bla'Pahinui&Ayub Ogada. The rest are easy-listening Buena Vista Social Club.

When it comes to Putumayo's themed compilations,I reccomend "Gardens of Eden" (sadly,it's out of print),"Music from the Tea Lands"(EXCELLENT!),"Asian Lounge".I am looking forward to "Music from the Wine Lands"--considering I live in the Wine Country.Hopefully,"Music from the Wine Lands" won't be snooze-inducing like this one.

4 out of 5 stars Chill out with a cup of coffee or a Mojito.............2005-08-05

Good Putumayo CD. Several very good tracks on this CD. 'Guajira Bonita' is fantastic, and reminds me of my trip to Peru hiking the Inca trail. Tracks 2, 3 are good as well, and then proceed to the wonderful Susana Baca with her bold, beautiful voice on 'Maria Lando'. 'Below the Bassline' is a wonderfully mellow Reggae sounding instrumental track that brings me back to all carribbean trips. 'Dilema' reminds me of my salsa adventure to Cuba, and 'Esa Noche' is a very good instrumental track with fantastic guitar that makes me yearn for returning to Mexico City or Oaxaca. Track 9, 10 are good as well. 'Este Son' will help you chill out with your cup of coffee. Highly recommend this CD if you enjoy Latin music, as well as international music. The pamphlet submitted with the CD about the artists is informtive and only adds to the enjoyment of the CD. A Putumayo Must!

1 out of 5 stars why?.......2005-10-28

Why do they keep making these "Mozart (and other composers) for..." CDs? I know I know. For idiots to buy them of course so the record company can make tons of money. But I feel it's an insult to classical music. No offense but Mozart wasn't thinking of you sipping a cup of joe when he wrote this music. He couldn't care less "how perky" your Starbucks is to tell you the truth. I think he'd be pretty mad seeing how his music is being commercially exploited these days. Why can't people just buy and listen to classical music as it was intended? Buy a set of Mozart's violin concertos or maybe Don Giovanni if you're so inclined. Don't be afraid - Mozart didn't write anything less than great. You won't be disappointed even if you go out on a limb and even buy one of his lesser known works. But don't get this "potpourri excerpts from his music" trash. Gosh, these kinds of CDs have gone too far. What's next - "Tchaikovsky for Taking a Dump"? Sheeesh....Don't suport this if you care about preserving art...

5 out of 5 stars Wake Up To Mozart.......2005-09-25

This CD is from the many titles in the "Set Your Life To Classical Music" which feature such catchy themes as Tchaikovsky at Tea Time, Chopin and Champagne, Baroque For Beauty Sleep, Bach For Barbecue, Beethoven For Book Lovers, Bach for Breakfast, Puccini and Pasta, Debussy for Dreamers, Liszt for Lovers and many many others. This one is a collection of Mozart's more intimate, nevertheless lively and jingly Violin Sonatas and Piano Trios, as played by the Beaux Arts Trio with Grimmeaux on the violin. The music sounds fresh and is certain to wake you up as much as a strong cup of coffee would. While the Mozart For Your Brain (Mozart music raising a person's IQ level) was proven to be ineffective, this music should be taken as background music or elevator music in a sense, to wake you up or to drink your coffee with. It is lovely music to wake to, and I have tried it. It works! It's beautiful, classy and elegant and at the same time, lively and jovial. Mozart's music has a charming effect. It is ebullient and gentle, and perfect to hear in any occassion. This type of music never becomes too deep or complex and Mozart never intended it to. It's purely musical for the sake of being musical and thus makes us feel good while listening to it. While its not exactly party music, it nearly becomes festive in its mood. I highly recommend all the CD titles in the Series. They are also excellent, first-rate introductions to classical music for the novice. This is not heavy stuff like Wagner, Mahler or Bruckner. It is simpler music relying on the grace and classical balance of harmony and consistency of line that Mozart used. It's easily appreciated. The covers to these titles are also very friendly looking and cute.

5 out of 5 stars Corny title - great CD.......2004-12-02

I first noticed this CD when I ran a query to find Arthur Grumiaux listings, but ignored it because of the title; thinking that it was a sampler of a variety of artists. When I ran across it in the store, though, I saw that Grumiaux and Klein perform on all Sonatas, and the Beaux Art Trio on all Trios! Strange that they decided to use their best artists on a low-price, mass-appeal compilation. So ignore the schmaltzy concept and definitely try this out - for the price you can't beat these great performances.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely splendid sampler (but its one disc not two).......2003-06-19

This is a lttle gem of a mozart chamber sampler...gentle pieces that show Mozart at his most gracious. The bargain (for casual classical listeners) is that you get a nice representative selection for a nice price (altho' please note this is ONE disc, not two)

For the the not-so-casual listener of Mozart, having Grumiaux and the Beaux Arts trio as performers means you get about the best Philips ever put on their catalogue. Much easier to shell out $$ for these selected performances by these musicians than to pay multiples of that to get the full sets. A "teaser...".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recording Quality!.......1999-08-23

I now have about 4 of the "Mozart for ..." CD's, and I have found all of them to be of excellent sound quality, and I have a very discrminating sound system. The Signal to Noise ratios are very good, and the music is very dynamic without suffering from much compression. If you know little about classical but enjoy well recorded, popular tunes, this series is for you! Highly recommended!

Album Description

While at Berklee, Al Kooper assembled a new band comprised entirely of fellow instructors. Appropriately dubbing them The Funky Faculty, Al began to perform regularly with his scholarly pals, both in the U.S. and abroad. The Funky Faculty appears on several of the studio recordings on Black Coffee, Al cutting the band live without overdubs to preserve the spontaneity of their intuitive interactions. For Black Coffee, Al selected nine originals and five cover songs to include on the album, reworking those covers in his own inimitable style. Together, the 14 tracks flawlessly represent the state of his musicality in 2005. The harsh realities of life are all dealt with lyrically here, hence the album title. "My Hands Are Tied" "Keep It To Yourself." "Going, Going Gone," "Imaginary Lover," "Another Man's Prize" and "(I Want You To) Tell Me The Truth" all deal with neo-dark situations that many can relate to. Al's choice of cover songs also opens a window into the world of sounds that have touched him throughout his long, storied career, from Motown legends the Temptations ("Get Ready") to the classy blues revivalist Keb' Mo' ("Am I Wrong") to the genius himself, Ray Charles ("Just For A Thrill"). Al, in fact, considers Black Coffee to be his finest overall collection of material since that legendary first Blood, Sweat and Tears album so many decades ago. He gets no argument there. Black Coffee is not just a remarkable re-entry, it's a zenith. Everything that Al Kooper has accomplished, everything he has learned as a jack-of-all-trades, he brings to a boil on this phenomenal new CD. But singling out highlights from Black Coffee remains a near impossibility. As Al puts it, "I made the record I wanted to make and I'm very pleased with it. To me that's what success means."

5 out of 5 stars Return to form? Nah, he'd never lost it.......2007-05-01

Just 'cause Al hasn't released much during the last...what, 25 years, doesn't mean he's been retired. He has been writing songs and making demos; it's just that no record company was interested. I don't know the deals that resulted in the release of Rekooperation and Soul of a Man, but they must have been 'one-off' deals. Finally, a musician-owned company showed interest, and we have this wonderful album. If you like great soul/jazz/rock music, done with excellent musicianship and flair, you will love this album. I'm almost 52 years old, I've heard a lot of music over the years, and I know great music when I hear it. This is great music, well-played and really well-recorded. I'm pretty realistic as far as what I expect from a new CD these days, in fact it's rare that I buy recent releases. But this meets all expectations and then some. I got much more than my money's worth. Al Kooper has always been the consumate musician and artist. Personally, I've always liked his voice; for some it might be an acquired taste. I kind of think of it as the ideal White Jewish Man singing soul. Plus, his singing has acquired an authority that only years of experience could give it. I think he's doing the best singing of his long career.

This is a great album, among many great Al Kooper albums.

1 out of 5 stars Just plain awful.......2007-04-19

Back in college I really enjoyed Blood, Sweat and Tear's Child is Father to the Man. It was my favorite album. I decided a few months ago to see what is going on with Al Kooper. I read the reviews on Black Coffee and bought it. My first Al Kooper album in 38 years. It was terrible. Probably the worst album I've every bought. I don't know what happened to ole Al but age hasn't been good to him.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Al Kooper Fans.......2007-01-11

Al Kooper's latest release is a collection of many of his unreleased works. If you like his style and lyrics, this album fills the gap of some of his early releases.

5 out of 5 stars Al's still got it.......2006-06-11

Classic Al Kooper. Somewhat overproduced but show me an Al Kooper album that isn't.

5 out of 5 stars This Black Coffee will wake you up and not let you down.......2006-02-09

He has never been the best vocalist, keyboard player, guitarist or writer, but Al Kooper is a tasty musician and an excellent producer with an uncanny ability to make great music. One needs only to listen to the classic organ riffs of "Like a Rolling Stone" done by the then non-keyboard playing Al or the groundbreaking "Child is Father to the Man" album by Al's brainchild B,S & T to realize he's the real deal.
I had long ago given up hope that I'd ever hear another solo studio album by Al Kooper but this release was worth the wait.
His voice has weathered over the years but as usual Al uses it to
a musical advantage on his songs of lost loves and life's changes as we grow older. The music has hints of B,S and T, Ray Charles, the blues, reggae and includes a smokin' live version of "Green Onions" and a rockin' "Get Ready". The highlights are Al's own songs like "Going,Going Gone" and "My Hands Are Tied" but this Black Coffee is guaranteed to wake you up and not let you down.

5 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky and Tchai.......2006-07-17

I wondered what do Tchaikovsky and Tea have in common, and then I remembered that in many countries across the world - the word for tea is "tchai". That aside, yes, this is a refreshing blend of music, perfect for tea time - relaxing and reviving at the same time, and quite a bit dreamy.

5 out of 5 stars Teatime...or otherwise........2005-11-02

I've owned this for years & play it often. It IS perfect for teatime, as it makes pleasant background music which you can talk over....but is also great w/volume up in car w/it's rambunctious side and incredible instrumentation. A really nice blend of Tchaikovsky's pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky's Dreamier Music: A Soothing Album.......2005-07-31

"Set your Life to Classical Music" is a fine album series that feature beautiful classical music for background music of any occasion- weddings, barbecues, breakfast, beauty sleep, bathtime, reading a book, romantic dinner, massages you name it. And indeed many classical pieces are perfectly therapeutic sessions in themselves. This album features the more intimate-sounding, soulful, sweet and relaxing tunes of Tchaikovsky. He did compose heavier and more dramatically intense music- his later symphonies, his Overtures and operas. But here we hear no Russian fire or harshness. Instead we are treated to the charming Mozartian style works of the Roccoco Variations and the Piano Trios. The disc also features the Andantino from his Piano Concerto No. 1 - and that piece is almost a Chopin Nocturne, with beautiful soft rubato and dream-like qualities. Included here is also the Pas De Deux and Odette and Siegfried theme from his ballet Swan Lake, lilting and graceful as the dancers movements themselves. The dance divertissements from Nutcracker round out the ballet segments with charming allure. The melancholy String Quartet and Serenade For Strings is here as well and not to mention the beautiful, wistful excerpts from the ballet Sleeping Beauty, his greatest ballet. The Panorama and Vision of Aurora played with delicate strings and sublime technicality. This is indeed a "refreshing blend for body and spirit" and is in fact perfect to listen to while drinking tea cosnidering you drink tea. I have tried it and believe me the experience is very soothing and refreshing. Try putting this on in your miniature CD player with headphones, then go out into an outdoor, natural environment, a park or a backyard garden or patio, and drink tea or read a book and you will find this is a fine companion.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-08-25

One of the best aspects of Tchiakovsky's music is the ocnsistency: he just DIDN'T compose any bad pieces. And with such consistency, you can compile a CD such as this.
THis CD gives you a proper taste of Tchaikovsky's style, and is a very nice sampler of some of his most famous works. This CD lacks some of his more energetically volatile works, but it thus lives up to its title. It is extremely relaxing, and soothes you as you listen to it. The works are melodic, and the orchestras and soloists are superb, especially in the Serenade and the Rococco Variations. I highly recommend this CD for anyone, even if you aren't a huge classical music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky's Most Enchanting Tunes.......2000-08-19

Like the title suggest, a good companion for tea time. Or any time. The music of Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky is beautiful, lyrical and full of a grace and charm that parallels to Mozart's. A great collection of music by the legendary Russian composer. He had a gift for making music in a style that did not sway away from Russian folk music but that added a Classical perfection, or better yet a Romantic mastership. Who can forget the Sleeping Beauty suite. Here is the Panorama scene.. gorgeous music. I recommend the entire ballet score. The Nutcraker and Swan Lake are also here. The Piano concerto no. 1 in B, Andante Cantibile and so much more. I garauntee any listener satisfaction.

Ask anyone who's attended one and they'll tell you: there's nothing quite as colorful--and emotionally melodramatic--as a Greek wedding. Based on Winnipeg actress-comedian Nia Vardalos's one-woman show and brought to the screen by Rita Wilson and husband Tom Hanks, the film tells (with some parallels to Moonstruck) the story of a thirtysomething Greek spinster for whom falling in love with a "Xeno" (non-Greek) is surely the easiest part of a wedding that more than lives up to its billing. The film's soundtrack perfectly captures those swirling clouds of ethnic and romantic tension. Its first half largely sets up the rich cultural atmosphere with a lively sampling of traditional Greek folk music (featuring selections by Alexandros Xenofontos, John Tsifliklis, Eman, Nick Kutsukos, Daghan Baydur, and Richard Thomas), while the score proper from Alexander Janko (with help from Chris Wilson) slyly segues from similar fare ("Moose Caca," "Yasoo," "Yiayia") to more traditional orchestral film music. That sometimes electro-pastoral, compelling music has parallels with Rachel Portman's and offers the collection a sense of emotional completion. --Jerry McCulley

We are using this series of CDs in our homeschool music program - they are fantastic! We especially love this one about Bach - what an awesome man! The story of his life is told in a way that is very interesting and holds the children's attention while also using various pieces of his music in the narration. It is done VERY well! My children are gaining a tremendous amount of knowlege and appreciation for music through this CD and so are my husband and I!

After 10 years of making hit records, you would think Cranberries singer Dolores O'Riordan would have figured out how to write a proper rock lyric. But less than two minutes into the Irish group's fifth album, we are treated to a flashing display of her incomparable wit: "Birds in the sky/ they look so high" she coos on the opening track "Never Grow Old," before adding "I feel the breeze/ I feel at ease." And that's when she is being mercifully clever. On the title track, she doesn't even bother summoning the lessons learned in fifth-grade poetry. She simply repeats each line twice, therefore rhyming every sentiment with itself. The lazy writing is really a shame because it gets in the way of one of the last truly clear, pristine voices in rock. While the Cranberries' musical might remains largely intact on its fifth album, showcasing full-bodied rhythms and symphonic flourishes on tracks like "I Really Hope" and "This Is the Day," it's really difficult to sustain any interest when the tiresome lyrics trip you up at every turn. --Jaan Uhelszki

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fine brew.......2006-08-14

Wake Up and Smell The Coffee has become one of my favorite Cranberries CDs. Dolores O'Riordan seems to have worked through a lot of the issues from Bury the Hatchet, and this reflects in the calmer, more hopeful music. The lyrics are more introspective, the depth of the lyrics is broader and the music is less angry and more cheerful. The hidden track, Cape Town, is one of best songs on the entire CD, a true gem about escaping the daily grind and going off on your own to do what you want.

If you are a fan of the Cranberries at all, this is well worth any investment might make.

4 out of 5 stars The Cranberries: Wake Up And Smell The Coffee (A&M).......2005-06-07

Did you enjoy that Evanescence record you bought? Well, can I recommend an album to you? While listening to The Cranberries 2001 release "Wake Up And Smell The Coffee", I end up listening to the title track. And for some reason, my original view was that the title track sounds too similar to Evanescence. From then, I was baffled. I am listening to two spiritually-influenced rock bands. I predict that you'd say, "It's simple. The Cranberries are poser rock. Because they copied from another poseur band". Hang on there, Trusty stallion. The Cranberries do sound like Evanescence lyric-wise and only on that song. I listened to this album because they were mentioning on the "I Love The 90's" marathon that they make sweet music, but it is not something that you would want to listen to all of the time...unlike Evanescence today. But enough. This album should be in every Rock fan's CD Player. Let me try to evaaluate the album, shall I? In "Never Grow Old" she dreams of a day in which we live a beautiful life. Many may say that "Analyse" is yoga material, but the drumming and Dolores' sweet voice makes the sound a little more accessible and sensible in life and love. "Time Is Ticking Out" talks so much about the bad things going on in the world like the fact that "it looks like we've screwed up the ozone layer". The clock sound may be a bit much to not scrunch your face, but it goes with the effect that time may be about to end, and none of the things we do are making it better. "Dying Inside" is a song about a woman who has a light that went out and causes her to break down and sulk. The album thus far is a more emotional view and spiritual rounds up the rest. "Wake Up And Smell The Coffee" is a hard rocking anthem telling you to wake up and smell the reality of life. In the song, the guitar playing came WAY before Lacuna Coil and Evanescence, and they didn't even have to turn it to 11. Amazing. That is also the showcase of Dolores' yodel-worthy voice. "Carry On" is a song of celebration with wine and laughter and living each day like the last. "Every Morning" (not a Sugar Ray cover) is a Cranberries custom birthday tune. So it looks like The Cranberries have plenty to offer than just hard rocking riffs full of usage for the Bible. The band has enough longevity and staying power to inspire the best of fans. The only problem is longevity in the mind of the listener. That must be the reason VH1 calls it a bit unmemorable musically. Well, give it a whirl. The best records aren't really memorable on the first listen.
Rating: 7.5/10

4 out of 5 stars Just as good as the others........2005-05-05

In 2001, the Cranberries seemed to be a band the public had forgotten about. But they proved that they were still around on their 5th (and final) album. It's sad to say that the Cranberries have dismembered, but it is the truth. On their final effort, the Cranberries give it one last go round and it is quite a success.

Maybe it's Dolores' angelic voice or the light strumming of the guitar but I truly have not disliked any album and think "Wake Up..." is yet another grand success. The lyrics are bit simpler on some songs and less politically charged but Dolores' voice is as pure as it ever was especially on the whispy and dreamlike "Pretty Eyes".

The band keeps an up-tempo feel throughout the whole album only stopping a few times to slow it down. "Analyse", "Time Is Ticking Out" and "Do You Know?" are delightful fast-paced tunes that will have you singing "La-la-la the strangest moment...La La La the strangest day...La-la-la the greatest love of them all..."!

But the last track on the album is really a perfect ballad. It showcases Dolores' songwriting and singing ability and is called "Chocolate Brown" defienatley a must listen.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Time Is Ticking Out, Chocolate Brown, Dying in the Sun and Analyse

3 out of 5 stars Wake up and smell the luke warm coffee........2005-04-25

I own all five of their albums, and what I seem to notice, is that each album isn't as good as the one before it. Ok, maybe "No Need To Argue" is the exception, but this is my least favorite of the bunch. It's not bad of course, it just seems to be alot of filler to me. I only really like 5 songs alot, and 3 of them are also on "Stars", which means I'm pretty much keeping this just for "Never Grow Old" and "Dying Inside". I hope they make a comeback sometime soon, but as far as "Wake Up And Smell The Coffee" goes, get the other 4 first.

4 out of 5 stars Chocolate Brown.......2005-04-09

I purchased this record the day I saw it at the music stores without knowing what to expect. Some songs on the album have piano on it(Chocolate Brown).Dolores O Riordan has a message for the fans in the booklet inside. It definitely says a lot for this album.Stand Out Tracks on this album - "Dying Inside" , "I really Hope" (reminds me of YOU AND ME) , "Chocolate Brown" , "Do You Know", "Concept" ...

Dying Inside is melody void of any uncertainity. Like I said this is by far the most calm Cranberries album. "Chocolate Brown" is my favourite song on the album. In a way it reminds me of the past. Its a step away from anything they've done. Its a song that'll pamper the listener. "Analyse" is good for the first few listens but sounds monotonous after a while.

Overall...I'd say this album is a definite buy for Cranberries Fans. I must add I quite liked the refreshing album art. I will remember this album for "Chocolate Brown" cause it added a definite worth to by all time favourite Cranberries songs.

New Cranberries Fans,Other songs for those interested would be : Electric Blue,When you're Gone,I Still Do,Ridiculous Thoughts,Hollywood,Joe,Linger and many more.Albums for new fans - Start with No Need To Argue. For the ambitious try TO THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED (Its their best record, hands down)

5 out of 5 stars The Best Classical Music for your money.......2006-10-12

I should tell you I started listening to this CD over half my lifetime ago. I was just 12 years old. It is still by far one of my favorites. I am more into rock, country, emo and alternative. For some reason though this happens to be one of my favorite CD's of all times. We have bought and worn out a number of copies in our house. Tapes have also been replaced. I guess this CD holds a special place in my heart since it was originally given to me by my grandmother before she died.

Richard Burmer is the highlight of this collection. I was in a shop in Singapore called Barang Barang which sells indonesian style furniture and accessories. Across The View was playing in the shop and after asking what it was I went downstairs (it was a shopping Mall) and bought the CD. That was back in 1996. Now in 2004 I still find this track a must at times of stress.

I played the track to a colleague at the time who instantly recognised it and told me it was a song by a Japanese band. Next day he brought that CD in and sure enough there it was Across The View - with lyrics (in English). It was done pretty much the same bar the vast landscape and having the addition of a fretless bass which was to die for. I have hunted high and low (yes I was an A-ha fan back in the mid 80's!!!) for this Japanese band's CD and having left Singapore, cannot ask my former colleague the name. If anyone out there has a clue what I'm talking about, please post a note here and let me know the name.

The rest of this CD is fine and definately background music to an occassion. You cant sit down on a Sunday with a cup of coffee and just sit there and listen - you have to be doing something at the same time.

Its very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Music to Relax With.......2004-02-04

This is a nice variety of soothing sounds, with a blend of instruments and the aroma of differing musical styles, but each meant for relaxation, and stimulation.

Those of Davis of Steamrolling fame are his usual good stuff, while the guitar and piano pieces are simply exquisite.

Can't personally recommend these for Sunday mornings, since we all should be gathering at church, but for those other appropriate times, this is nice collection to sip coffee with and ponder the grandeur of God's created universe.

5 out of 5 stars If you have passion in mind, this is it........2003-04-02

I've owned this album for some time, and I can assure you that you won't hear this in any homily. This is about love, passions, and the wonder of being with that most special person in the quietude that somehow is Sunday morning. The selections ease from early-morning tenderness through intimacy and back again, making the composition of the ambum itself as impressive as each of its tracks. For lovers, for lovers on Sunday Morning, this is that album. Enjoy.
