4 out of 5 stars Old World Sound to Calm the Senses.......2007-01-03

Beautiful, pure, and often heavenly are my select words to describe this CD.

5 out of 5 stars NOT OF THIS WORLD.......2004-08-31

Tabula Rasa: Silentium : This music is not of this world. I worship/pray in silence while driving with this music on with a palm facing the windshield. The haunting, surreal background...the two main violins mournfully cries out aloud...yet so beautiful...my heart cries with them.

5 out of 5 stars Spare brilliance.......2003-01-08

Spending a lot of words describing Pärt's music seems like defeating the purpose. It is transcendent, haunting, solemn, quiet, and all the other things the other reviewers say. I view it, stylistically, as somewhere between the minimalism of Glass et al, and the ambient textures of Steve Roach -- if that description makes any sense. I find myself a little more at home with his instrumental pieces than his choral work, but that's just personal preference.

This is a good first Pärt CD -- then you can move on to other works, especially his Te Deum.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificat: Magnificent!.......2002-08-05

I realize the title of this review is pretty silly, but I had to think of something.
I have always enjoyed classical music, but not nearly as much as other genres... that is until a friend of mine gave me SANCTUARY. I listen to it all the time now. The genius of Arvo Part's music is that although it is quite somber, it is very beautiful. I think that if you don't like classical music now, you will once you listen to Arvo Part. My favourite piece is Magnificat, hence the title.

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one Pärt CD, buy this one.......2002-02-21

This exquisite recording is an "Arvo Pärt Sampler" that provides a great introduction to this wonderful composer. I bought it because it contains his two best-known short choral works, the Beatitudes and the Magnificat. The performances by the choir of King's College Cambridge are transcendent, as usual; it is very difficult to achieve the serenity of sound needed to communicate Pärt's music, but King's is perfect for it. The instrumental works are samples of Pärt's greatest hits including an especially heart-rending performance of the Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten.

Whether or not you enjoy the music of Arvo Pärt is partially a matter of temperament. Pärt is to music what contemplative spirituality is to prayer. To most of us, prayer involves talking to God; but to the contemplative, prayer means listening in receptive silence. Pärt is deeply contemplative, and his music speaks from this inner stillness, suspended in time. If you long for this inner stillness and peace, you will love Pärt; if not, his music will probably bore you. Silence plays an important part in his music. In the words of Arvo Pärt, "The most important things that happen between people who are very close to each other are not stated, are not even possible to express. One doesn't need to and shouldn't say anything." When you listen to Pärt, don't expect action, don't expect something to "happen." Just give yourself to the music and don't "do" anything - let God do it.

5 out of 5 stars Requiem/Great work/great performance........2007-03-21

Polyansky is one of the best conductors in Schnittke, though obviously there's not much competition, so few multipile recordings. No matter how few, as long as we get one outstanding as this one.
The Requiem is dark and ominious, which is typical of Schnittke, 'the depths" is what he is after. Profiund genius of a man and composer, shows clearly in this Requiem. The words selected by Schnittke are ancient prayers from old sources, and deal with end times of God's dealings with man. Its so apt for todays times. Which confirm my opinion that both Schnittke and Pettersson were convicted in the conscience by the "warp and woof' of this spinning earth and its tragic consequences if continued at such a pace.
Of course the humanists/atheists call such ideas 'fluff and snuff". Which is why Schnittke's music strikes much greater at those with soul.

5 out of 5 stars Five for the Requiem.......2005-12-29

I also have the BIS recording, and have heard one other. This is by a moderate margin the best as far as interpretation (though it feels just a tad slow in spots) and is definitely the best in sound quality.

(The BIS one seems somewhat flat on the sound recording/engineering, even more so than seems to be somewhat regular with that label.)

4 out of 5 stars Great music, great performance.......2004-10-15

These are some of my favourite pieces by Schnittke, and they are treated well in this recording. It is difficult to imagine a better performance of the Requiem, and the Concerto is also nicely handled (though the recorded sound gets a tad muddled in places).
These are some rigorous, but relatively approachable, late 20th century pieces that are very moving, deeply expressive.
Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Polyansky great again. Khudolei dismal, unimaginative.......2003-02-22

Great interpretation of the Requiem by Polyansky! That alone is worth owning this CD.
However the fantastic concerto for piano & strings is a write off! Khudolei is an unimaginative pianist, did not even bother to follow Schnittke's precise score. His heavyhanded playing went against the grain of this piece and he managed to make the orchestra and Polyansky become a bad accompanist!
One would think Chandos could afford a good pianist!
The best recording of this piece is pianist Victoria Postnikova on Erato if you can find it!

Stravinsky dominates 20th century music as Beethoven did in the 19th. No other composer of our time was so completely at home in so many forms and styles; no other knew so well how to adapt sounds from the past--medieval, baroque, classical and even, near the end of his career, 12-tone, to suit his own purposes. A brilliantly original creator, he also plundered the music of other composers such as Gesualdo, Pergolesi, and Tchaikovsky--even "Happy Birthday to You" in his hilarious "Greeting Prelude." But he made this music his own and transformed it into something new and splendid. He has fared well (though he often complained) in the hands of other conductors, but his own interpretations often give unique insights. He was the first composer to have his work substantially preserved (more than 60 pieces) in recordings made under his own supervision (Britten did nearly as well; Milhaud, Poulenc, Shostakovich, and a few others have left small samples). This collection, with an informative, well-illustrated booklet, is monumental, a legacy to posterity of incalculable value. --Joe McLellan

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate collection.......2006-04-17

This box set, sometimes referred to as a "lunchbox " is most
likely out of print, considering the 22 CD's it comprises
and the price tag.

Nevertheless, any classical music fan will want to own this
item, despite the sales price of over $350 USD.

On the one side, you have the classic, big-name numbers that
are sterotypical of Stravinsky, in the minds of the public,
such as Firebird, Petrushka, Rite of Spring, etc. Obviously,
being this a COMPLETE edition of ALL of the composer's career
works, they had to be performed, recorded and conducted by
the composer too. However, they've been performed, recorded
a lot better elsewhere, no doubt.

So, the real focus and attraction of this box edition, is
that it presents a huge amount of previously unavailable,
hard to find, overpriced, unrecorded, underappreciated
compositions in a one-stop-shop release, the current one.

Some highlights, I feel, is THE RAKE, as well as AGON,
BLUEBIRD, and many others.

The recording is impeccable, and considering that the author
was focusing on the underrepresented repertoire in his recorded
legacy, those are especially well presented, performed and
conducted.

Therefore, for the above reasons, and also the fact that
there's so much to choose from - a new opus every day of
the month is possible, almost - it's a can't miss proposition.

If it's still available on the retail market, that is.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Trove.......2004-08-21

You will never find the majority of these works better played than here. A few minor quibbles though. The set is not absolutely complete as the Fanfare for Two Trumpets and Stravinsky's arr. of The Star-Spangled Banner are missing. They where recorded by Columbia during this period and issued on LP. More serious is that the first note is missing from the sixth of the 8 Instrumental Miniatures. Also I think Sony could have included Robert Craft's performance of Les Noces as it outshines Stravinsky's. Using the original Russian language, as Craft does (the composer's is in English) does give it an extra edge. And why has the producer chosen to place the orchestral Ode on the "Oratorio - Melodrama" album, between Perséphone and Monumentum pro Gesualdo...
Otherwise all is fine and one can only admire the composer's way with the music. The rhythms are knife-sharp, the melodies phrased con amore and you will find none of the sluggishness that that many conductors seem to prefer. A gold-mine indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Achievement.......2000-02-05

Having been immersed in the study of Stravinsky at university, I have developed a new appreciation and love for this music and the man who composed it. To single out any one work or performance as the finest would be impossible, although certain pieces will need to be taken with a dose of salt as Stravinsky covers more than one style. My own personal favourite is the D major Violin Concerto at the end of the concerto disc- a brilliant piece of music brilliantly performed. If I had to point out what is not good about this album, it is really more a criticism of Stravinsky's work- the "Cantata" is probably the dullest thing he ever wrote (even he admitted not to liking it that much). Nonetheless, this IS his complete music, completely recorded under his watchful gaze. What a magnificent achievement- and how well preserved and mastered by Sony!

5 out of 5 stars Truly historical.......1999-09-21

This truly historical edition once and for all puts to rest the old putdown that Strawinsky could not conduct. In fact many of the works in this box have never sounded beter, and this includes works like Petrushka, Apollon and La baiser de la Fee. For seeing the real and strong continuity in Strawinskys often chameleontic carreer, there is nothing like listening to these CD's again and again. After some time the differences fade into the background and it becomes clear what all these works have in common: a search for the essence of the European classical tradition. It also becomes clear why the Russians consider Strawinsky not really one of their own. But most of all, this is music by one of the really great composers and recorded by himself.

3 out of 5 stars An amazing work!.......2002-01-14

Few of us have ever heard this work and fewer in performance. I was fortunate enough to participate in a performance of just the first movement and it is a real kick!

I am grateful for this recording and though the performance isn't bad, I think it doesn't have the majesty, mystery, and power that the work really requires to make its statements. Maybe it needed to be recorded in a cathedral rather than a studio. The group certainly seems to have the skill to pull it off.

Well, I don't want to quibble. Listen to this work! And then imagine it performed more Russian and with more mystery and I think you would have it.

The definitive recording remains to be made.

Alfred Schnittke's work always is fresh and challenging, even when it seems also willfully obscure. This disc presents two of the Russian composer's best works in excellent performances by a fine chorus whose Slavic timbres fit the sense of rootedness in the soil of Europe's east that pervades both pieces. The Concerto for Choir is a four-movement work for a cappella mixed chorus, set to a religious text. Each movement has its own character, and each is full of fetching colors and rhythmic drive. Also, each has unforgettable moments, such as the second movement's soprano melody, which floats above a chant-like ostinato; or the echo effect of the final Amen, the men singing slightly behind the women. The Requiem is, if anything, even more compelling, bursting with originality, as well as homages to Stravinsky (the "Kyrie" is straight out of Les Noces) and Prokofiev (Alexander Nevsky's fingerprints are all over the "Tuba mirum"). The chorus is joined here by a small, percussion-laden orchestra, which contributes to the power of the work, as in the militant "Credo," whose piercing brass and powerful drums make for the most exciting Requiem this side of Verdi. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two remarkable choral works.......2001-01-21

Alfred Schnittke was among the most original composers of the twentieth century. This recording by the Prague Philarmonic Choir presents two substantial works for choir, each one a masterpiece in its own way as well as exemplifying the composer's distinctive style.

As a strong choral music enthusiast, I find the "Concerto for Choir" to be unlike anything I've heard before - whilst being like a lot of things I have heard before. This seems a paradoxical way to explain the piece, but it is the only way that seems right. In that it sets sacred Russian texts to lush, dramatic choral textures, it is like any number of widely-acclaimed choral masterworks (an example being Rachmaninov's "All Night Vigil"). However, nothing in it can be expected or anticipated: the chorus is unaccompanied throughout, thus the "concerto" element is created by exploring a large number of virtuosic vocal displays, as well as by following a strict form with repeating elements, just like a traditional concerto for instruments. The range required by the voices takes them to their respective limits (the high sopranos produce passionate high Cs whilst the basses descend frequently to infernal Ds); as is typical of Schnittke, the work also includes dense note clusters, produced by dividing the choir into a total of sixteen parts. Sometimes, members of the choir provide an accompaniment to others (there are also fleeting but memorable passages for actual soloists); in the main, a rich mixture of tonal and atonal idioms are presented through polyphonic effects not dissimilar to those used by Renaissance composers or more recent composers of sacred music such as John Tavener. Schnittke approaches the texts (varied texts of praise and lamentation) in a seemingly liberal way: in places, the music simply projects the words, whilst in others the words spawn musical settings that are striking and moving all at once. In short, this is a very special kind of musical work - part concert work, part sacred work; part innovation in a familiar genre, part rehashing of traditional choral ideas; part expression of uncompromising faith, part setting of sacred texts for aesthetic value. Under Jaroslav Brych, the Prague Philarmonic Choir does it full justice. Well worth the price of the disc, although on listening to it, I have to say I would probably enjoy it more if it were performed in front of me (or else I were performing in it myself)...

The "Requiem" shares a few traits with the "Concerto," albeit the effect is more dramatic, even shocking. The choir is joined by a bizzare orchestra consisting predominantly of percussion instruments, with various brass instruments, piano and organ alongside. Again, there are aspects of this music that appear familiar and unfamiliar: the treatment of the "Dies irae" sequence receives much attention by the composer, with shrieking brass, apocalyptic organ noises and heavy banging on the percussion; there are also very disturbing moments in which the chorus chants the words tonelessly or else sings them with awesome power. The quieter sections ("Lacrymosa" in particular) are haunting, making use of vocal soloists and extremely subtle instrumental writing. Musically, there is a great deal more variety evident in this work than in the "Concerto," and a great deal more control is needed from the performers - this is just as well-achieved.

The liner notes provide excellent commentary on the music, which amounts to a full hour's worth of listening.

Fans of Schnittke looking for one or both of these very important oeuvres should choose this one without hesitation; as far as I can tell, it represents best value for money (as opposed to the two Chandos recordings of the "Concerto," one of which is a stand-alone and the other of which is coupled with another work). If you're curious, this is worth a try, although the "Concerto" is on the whole more digestible in one sitting than the "Requiem."
