      Deutsche Grammophon is lucky in that World War II didn't slow classical recordings in Germany as it did in the United States but stimulated them: It was essential for wartime morale. Thus, if you can get past any repugnance related to these recordings' genesis, there's a huge amount to enjoy. There's a disc of lieder by all the prewar greats (Franz Volker, Tiana Lemnitz, Erna Berger, and Heinrich Schlusnus), a disc of Wagner featuring young Hans Hotter, opera and operetta performances by Berger and Helge Roswaenge, and a disc showing how the German singers gave Italian opera a distinctively Nordic but highly communicative edge. The set is crowned by a complete Winterreise that was recorded by Peter Anders in 1945 (and sounds it): the cultivated tenor's anguished performance embodies a Germany facing the abyss. --David Patrick Stearns

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Ur-Mahler!.......2002-03-14

      This is a review of the performance by Oskar Fried et al, which I know from its brief appearance on 33rpm vinyl (Pearl label, I think), circa 1985, and assume it sounds as good or better now on the Naxos CDs. Strangely the ancient acoustic recording never seemed to be much of a factor in my listening experience - the sense of the firey presence of the music itself blew away all other considerations. The music is just THERE, more immediate and urgent than on any other recorded - or live! - performance of the Resurrection Symphony I've experienced. Fried never gets in the way of the music, but if you're aware of him at all, it's because there's an incendiary intensity other conductors don't seem to muster up - the DIRECTNESS of the performance is self-effacing but in a way that only adds, paradoxically, to the character and quirkiness of the thing. Fried isn't breathing down your neck like some 'intense' conductors do; instead, he's blowing the flames of the music itself white-hot. Get it and give away all other versions - in this most sonic of symphonies, the technology doesn't matter at all. (Well, maybe it does... My enthusiasm for this recording should perhaps be taken with a grain of salt - I happen to love ALL acoustic recordings or orchestral music!)

      5 out of 5 stars Naxos' Resurrection of Fried's Mahler's "Resurrection".......2001-12-14

      Oskar Fried's 1924 acoustic recording of Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony (1892), with the Berlin Cathedral Chorus and the Berlin State Opera Orchestra (and soloists) represents a very nearly mad endeavor. Audaciously undertaken by Deutsche Gramophon, it also represents a stunning success and constitutes a milestone, not only in recorded Mahler, but in recorded music. The requirements of Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony, colossal enough on their own, certainly challenged the limitations, perfectly understood by the engineers, of acoustic mastering. Fried (1871-1941) pared down the performing forces, reconstituting the ensemble as necessary to account for the kaleidoscopic changes of instrumentation. The players addressed themselves, in a small studio, to a large horn; the horn directly agitated a stylus that chiseled groves in a spinning platter. No electrical amplification or equalization took place. It was as crude as it sounds. In Ward Marston's digital transfers for the new Naxos issue, we can nevertheless hear Fried's remarkable interpretation of Mahler's towering symphonic edifice. Fried knew Mahler and received advice from him on early performances of the First and Second Symphonies. This 1924 traversal thus brings us as close to Mahler himself as we are ever likely to get, and it tells us something significant about what has happened to the idea of Mahler over the last eighty years. In 1924, Mahler still appeared as a radically contemporary composer, a modernist in the context of the time. The word "expressionistic" might describe Fried's performance as a whole. He takes the First Movement (Allegro Maestoso) at a fair clip and without sentimentality in the levitating second subject. The cellos and basses bite deeply into the familiar opening figure. The Second Movement (Andante Moderato) benefits from a slightly faster tempo than we expect and gains a hint of irony under Fried's direction. The Third Movement Scherzo (In Ruhig Fliessender Bewegung), based on "Saint Anthony's Prayer to the Fishes" from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn," rollicks along in three-quarter time. The ensuing "Urlicht" will stun first-time listeners to the performance. This movement sets a text by Klopstock about Christian conversion for contralto and orchestra. Fried finds distinct Jewish elements in the score, especially in the persistent solo violin accompaniment, akin to those in the Funeral March of the First Symphony. The conjunction of what sounds like a Yiddish lullaby in the violin with the contralto's articulation of Klopstock's devotional poem emphasizes the ecumenicity of Mahler's concept. To my mind, Fried's gesture markedly transforms the character of the symphony, forcing one to grasp it in a new way. The Fifth Movement Finale, with its offstage brass bands and large choruses, poses the severest challenge to the conditions under which Fried worked. Rarely, however, has the SHAPE of this movement been so clear. Recorded over many days and possibly in two separate locations, Fried's efforts defy circumstace by bringing amazing coherence and truth to Mahler's sprawling tableau. Even the grandiosity of it (of the symphony as a whole) remains in evidence. The closest subsequent thing to Fried's account is Otto Klemperer's Vienna performance (available on Vox) from 1951. Klemperer, like Fried, brought a modernistic idea to Mahler's score and never wallowed in the music. In addition to Fried's performance of the Second Symphony, this two-disc set also generously gives us several other items:
      *Jascha Horenstein's 1928 performance, with baritone Heinrich Rehkemper and the Berlin State opera Orchestra, of the "Kindertotenlieder," the earliest electrical recording of Mahler;
      *Soprano Grete Stuckgold's 1921 performance, with an unidentified orchestra, of Mahler's youthful "Ich Ging Mit Lust" and her 1915 performance, again with an unidentified orchestra, of "Wer Hat Dies Liedlein Erdacht" from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn";
      *Soprano Lulu Mysz-Gmeiner's 1926 performance, with piano accompaniment, of the same song;
      *Baritone Heinrich Schlusnus' 1931 performances, with the Berlin State opera orchestra under Hermann Weigert, of "Rheinlegendchen" and of "Der Tambourg'sell," both from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn";
      *Mezzo Sarah Charles-Cahier's 1930 performance, with the Berlin State Opera Orchestra under Selmar Meyrowitz, of "Ich bin der Welt Abhanden Gekommen," from "Lieder nach Rückert," and her 1930 performance, with the same accompaniment, of "Urlicht."
      -- All of which fascinates mightily and no doubt exhausts the archeo-discography of Mahler. (Rumors circulate, however, of a 1930 performance of the Fifth Symphony under Willem Mengelberg preserved on Dutch air-check platters. Get your hands on that, Naxos!) Horenstein's "Kindertotenlieder" is on a high level artistically and is finely recorded. In sum: A treasure-trove and a "must buy" for fans both of Mahler and of early ambitious recording.

      4 out of 5 stars Wrong language done right........2006-11-10

      Don't let the wrong language deter you from this recording. The sound shows its age a bit, but the performance is vital and impressive. Lorenz Fehenberger (my favorite Lohengrin) is Riccardo and sings it brilliantly, with grace and passion. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is Renato, and he convinces that his "wrong" voice is actually correct. You may not know Anny Schlemm, but that is your loss. She is fabulous as Amelia. Fritz Busch holds the whole thing together, the recording made near the end of his life. His attention to orchestral details and to shaping each scene show in number after number. A great recording not to be missed.

      5 out of 5 stars Fritz Busch's final opera triumph.......2001-05-24

      Honestly I roared with laughter reading the cover notes of Fritz Busch, the conductor of this recording. The notes claim that being the general music director at the Semper Opera in Dresden, he `gave several good performances of opera's by E van Suchs'. In German you can read that he succeeded masterly the first performance opera tradition carried out by E. van Such. Now what is correct - and who the heck is E. van Such(s)? He is nobody. Absolutely nobody. Fritz Busch took over in Dresden after Fritz Reiner, the successor of - Ernst von Schuch, who conducted the world premieres of Richard Strauss' Salome, Elektra and Rosenkavalier in 1905, 1907 and 1911. May I as kindly as possible advise Gala to reconsider this cover rubbish and issue another cover text by someone who has the necessary competence to render such (Such?) information. In this concert performance of Un Ballo in Maschera we listen to among others a soprano who began as a contralto, Walburga Wegner, and a contralto who also sang soprano roles, Martha Mödl who was the marvellous first Isolde in Bayreuth after WW II (with Ramón Vinay). Both provide vast horizons of singing, Wegner with an incredibly equal soprano from bottom to pitch, and Mödl with the compassionate expression that was hers. My first listening gave me the impression of Lorenz Fehenberger as a typical German sob-tenor trying to pretend Italian. The second listening, however, revealed to me a fascinating voice with which he `acts' audibly. Anny Schlemm has the right spirit for Oscar which Swedish Birgit Nordin took up just few years after this recording when the Stockholm opera performed the opera in Swedish with Ragnar Ulfung and Aase Nordmo Løvberg. To me, unfortunately, the very young Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is a major disappointment singing mechanically as if he kept his head in the score instead of having the score in his head. But the triumph of the performance is with Fritz Busch who lets the music reveal any little nuance in the atmosphere of a royal murder-to-be. Having listened to this recording no one can be in doubt that the musical leadership of exactly this opera which he conducted as a guest at Carl Ebert's Charlottenburger Oper in Berlin, and which confirmed Verdi's definitive success in Germany, reaches its climax in this final opera performance that the now Argentinian citizen living in New York carried out in his native country before his untimely death just 7 months later.

      5 out of 5 stars A great day in Cologne preserved on CD. Thank you Gala!.......1999-08-25

      Are you aching to hear Verdi's "A Masked Ball" sung in German, but you don't have the means to travel to Germany or Austria for a performance. Or, do you have what you consider is the "definitive recording" of this opera and you're looking for a interesting diversion. Well, here's a bargain for you. An opera written in Italian, originally about intrigue in the Swedish court, which is frequently performed with a Boston-setting (as it is on this recording), and sung here in German. It doesn't get any more internationally head-spinning than this. But, if you want to listen to what may be the last recording by the legendary, opera conductor Fritz Busch (who co-founded the Glyndebourne Festival), with a 25 year-old Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Martha Modl in her prime (and not singing Wagner), then this recording is for you. And that's not all. You get three bonus tracks (20 minutes) from Verdi's "La Forza del Destino" also sung in German with Artur Rother conducting featuring renowned, German baritone Heinrich Schlusnus and acclaimed, Danish tenor Helge Rosvaenge. Plus you get a lengthy interview with Fritz Busch, unfortunately it's in German. But if you're not a "collector" or a financially-frustrated traveler, the question remains should you buy this recording? Yes. This is a great little undiscovered treasure. Busch's tempos really bring out the drama and excitement of the music. The singing is very good, and not just from the big names. But don't forget the big names. Modl's first appearance as the fortune-teller is powerful and arresting (CD1, Track 8). This 1951 recording sounds remarkably good.

            Any anthology that explores the dawn of phonograph recordings promises to be rough going: I can't discern anything meaningful from the primitive recordings by the legendary conductor Arthur Nikisch. However, everything is more clear and vivid after the implementation of the microphone in 1926, and this material occupies four of these five CDs. Still, some artists sound a bit inhibited, and it's frustrating that we're often given only one movement from concertos played by pianist Elly Ney and cellist Enrico Mainardi. However, seasoned collectors will find recordings by Victor de Sabata, Paul Van Kempen, and others that they never even knew existed, plus a great, little-known 1943 performance of Schumann's Symphonic Etudes by Geza Anda. The set is crowned by an emphatic, rugged, deeply felt complete 1941 performance of the Mozart Requiem conducted by Bruno Kittl. The clarity of the remasterings is often amazing. --David Patrick Stearns

            4 out of 5 stars Sorry...I heard only fifth disc in this set........2000-12-06

            I'm very sorry because I bought only fifth disc in this set. So, I don't review all of CDs. Bruno Kittel(1870-1948) was founder and conductor of his chorus-Bruno-Kittel-Chor. It was one of very highest vocal groups in German-speaking countries. They achieved many contributions. In 1928, Bruno-Kittel-Chor recorded first complete SP of Beethoven's Missa solemnis(with Lotte Leonard, Elenor Schlosshauer-Reynolds, Eugen Transky, Wilhelm Guttman and the Berliner Philharmoniker) in Deutsche Grammophon. Its SPs were imported to Japan, sold over 17000 sets. Its restored CD set were issued by Japan Polygram in 1998(I seeked this set so far but I have not this set because it was issued only Japan.). And they sung many times Beethoven's 9th Symphony with Oskar Fried(1929), Wilhelm Furtwangler(1937 and 1942) and many other conductors. In Third Reich, Kittel was premiered some of 'political' works include Christoph Muller's Deutsches Heldenrequiem-offered to Hitler-and participated concerts held by Nazi. For that reason, Kittel was buried in post-war German musical scene and chorus were disorganized. In World War II, they recorded for Deutsche Grammophon-Bach's Matthaus-Passion(1942. except 18 numbers) and Mozart's Requiem(1941)-twice. It's a last recordings they sung. In this fifth CD contains complete Requiem and final chorus in Matthaus-Passion(St.Matthew Passion). When I heard this recording first, very surprised. Part of Introitus' soprano solo part and Offertorium's last refrain, verses related 'Jewish' were erased and replaced other Latin words(Sion->coelis, Jerusalem->hic in terra, Abrahae->Domini). It's a Nazi's sensorship obviously. What a cruel purges! But they performed very humanistic-added Romantic a little-this last work by Mozart. In solo parts, soloists-Tilla Briem, Gertrud Freimuth, Walther Ludwig and Fred Drissen-sung very moved with rich German accents. And choral parts-especially Dies irae and Lacrimosa, they performed with fear and tears probably. And they sung in Kyrie and Communio's difficult fugue part very superbly. Certainly, they are very highest chorus in German. I think it's a best of pre-war and wartime Requiem recording with Bruno Walter's live recording in 1937. But, final chorus in Matthaus-Passion is 'too' romantic performance. Bach's taste disappeared 'perfectly' in this recording. For that reason, this recording is not re-issue by CD present day. And this CD contains other two small choral works sung by Thomanenchor Leipzig-Brahms' In stiller Nacht conducted by Karl Straube(1930) and Anonymous Christkindleins Wiegenlied. Restoration quality is not bad. But scratch noise remained in part(very high in Introitus' opening and some other parts). I think Deutsche Grammophon's staff were restored like a original SP added frequency.

            5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2001-03-11

            This is an amazing collection of arias from the early 1900s through the 1930s (there is one 1942 cut). The sound transfers, made from pristine 78 records, are excellent, especially considering the age of the recordings. This CD is a splendid overview of the outstanding artists of their day, and while many of them are no longer (opera) household names, their singing is first rate. Not only would this be a great CD for an opera history buff, it is also excellent for someone just learning about opera and wanting to hear opera legends. The price for 5 CDs, each over an hour's worth of listening, is a steal.
