Feelings put to music............2007-03-15

I know this CD came out 112 years ago, but I'm loving it right now; it's still great! Congratulations to Mr. Benet for sharing his feelings w/us thru his music; truthfully, I had only heard Pretty Baby on radio, sometimes, and - maybe - Hurricane & that was it! What a treasure of tunes still on the CD that were being ignored! Anyway, this is still in heavy rotation for me. Wanted to give a shout out & my 2 cents.

A Solid Comeback Album!.......2007-01-18

I bought this CD over a year ago and I guess the title "Hurricane" also played a major interest in listening to samples online and then buying the CD afterwards. I must say this is one of the unique music CDs I listen to without skipping a record and the timing of the album was divine especially dealing with a major hurricane (Wilma)after thinking we escaped one (Katrina)in South Florida. So whether you literally dealt with a hurricane or figuratively dealt with one involving issues of life -this CD is for you.

The album will have you hooked from the first song "Be myself Again" (One of my personal favorites)that sounds like an old-time spiritual that would have you tapping your feet or doing your household chores with a skip in your step. I highly recommend "Pretty Baby" to young girls on the verge of or in their teenage years and adult women who still think they are. The title track is poignant lyrically. I have so many favorites on this CD that it's hard to list all - Of course "I wanna be loved" is divine, "Cracks of my broken heart" is moving - I shed a tear the first time I heard it. "Man enough to cry," "my prayer," and "still with you" proves how soulful this album really is. And my ultimate favorite "in the end" takes you through the personal journey of a woman and in the end - no pun intended:-) you find out that the journey could be your very own.

This is a beautiful mature album, his record company needs to PROMOTE his work more b/c artist like him are rare & needs to be more in the mainstream. Despite is failed relationship with Halle, this albums emphasizes that she is a love that will always be an imprint in his heart and mind. An amazing album is a album that the words stands out more than the beat and this is the album. BUY THIS ALBUM I GUARANTEE you, YOU will not be dissappointed. GO out and Collect his two previous album and you will continue to see the growth of this amazing and TALENTED artist.

Warm, Full, Grown & much Needed.......2006-10-01

In a day and age where all the 30- & 40-somethings are still behaving like teens and 20-somethings, Hurricane is not your typical mainstream R&B, Pop chart topper. Unlike the majority of what's played, Hurricane is full with story, meaning, and insight. It speaks to "grown folks'" experience in away that if youth happen to get into it they may actually gain something as a person.

Be Myself Again is so uplifting and motivating that I will find ways to play it for the youth I work with. The entire album contains an essense of maturity that much of today's music lacks. It also gives us a sense of self-awareness and spirituality, that is refreshing. Benet is definitely on the right track.

The bootleg is okay - if you really want to see Marc's talent, get the CARENCRO CD. I love him - he is so talented. I saw him in concert and he does not disappoint.
If you like blues, jazz and soul - you will love Marc Broussard.

I thought this CD was great. The first Marc Broussard song that I heard was actually I live recording, and I was a little disappointed after picking his "Carencro" album to hear that a lot of his songs were more Clay Aiken-ish than bluesy. If you like real blues, buy this record.

George Winston is no stranger to benefits. He often gives the proceeds from his concerts to charitable organizations, and in 2001 he released Remembrance, a benefit album for the families of 9/11 victims. Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions: A Hurricane Relief Benefit serves two purposes. It's a benefit for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, but it also allows Winston to indulge his love of New Orleans piano, which he's voraciously studied from the works of James Booker, Professor Longhair, Henry Butler, and Dr. John. Winston's proficiency at these styles is not always convincing. There's uncertainty in his timing, and he seems to get finger-tied on difficult runs. But he doesn't make it easy on himself, playing stomping stride pieces by James Booker ("Pixie") and Henry Butler ("The Breaks"). These are rapid-fire tunes on which Winston gets a honky-tonk sound from the piano that might surprise his fans.

On a 12-minute odyssey through "When the Saints Go Marching In," Winston echoes Bobby Hebb's 1966 hit, "Sunny," before breaking into a rollicking stride version of the New Orleans anthem that takes a turn into boogie-woogie minimalism. These songs challenge Winston's skill, as does Dr. John's ruminative "Creole Moon," which would seem more appropriate for Winston's technique. But it's not all New Orleans stride and jazz. Winston also throws in some gorgeous originals that are in his more conventional "folk-piano" style. The long ring-outs and sustains of "Gulf Coast Lullaby Part 1 & 2" have all the Winston signatures, as does "Stevenson." Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions is a fun album, but Winston's love of New Orleans piano isn't always done justice in the performance. --John Diliberto

George Winston's piano playing is always interesting, and it's great to hear him work out on songs in a New Orleans mode. His take on music by Booker, Butler and Dr John is actually pretty impressive. He's got his own approach and the chops to pull it off. The fact that this album supports the Katrina victims also comes as an extra recommendation.

If you like the music of George Winston's earlier albums, especially the "seasons," December, Plains, Forest, Montana.....you will probably not like this one. Unfortunately, it is nothing like his earlier works. I would never have fallen in love with his music if it was all like Gulf Coast Blues. This new one is way too heavy, loud, and generally abrasive. I am very sorry to have to say these things, because I am such a big fan of his.

I love this CD. It has a meloncholy blues sound, very clean, with echoes of typical New Orleans dixieland, strains of Dr. John-type piano, and a touch of Winstoneque new age. Only wish it was longer.

I was disappointed in this CD and have only played it once. There was nothing about the music that "grabbed" me or even made me identify with New Orleans jazz or blues. Not what I expected, but I was still happy to contribute to the hurricane relief effort.

George Winston's "Gulf Coast Blues and Impressions" is both a benefit album to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina as well as a tribute to New Orleans jazz piano. Those who have seen Winston perform in concert know that this style of music is one of his passions, so it's fun to have a full recording of both quiet and rollicking forms of jazz piano from this artist. Six of the tracks are original compositions in the styles of some of Winston's favorite jazz composers, three are covers, and one is an almost twelve-minute arrangement of the New Orleans musical staple, "When the Saints Go Marching In." Folks looking for meditation music should probably move on, although four of the tracks are much quieter and more what Winston's fans have come to expect. All of George Winston's proceeds from this album will go directly to the Dancing Cat Benefit Fund, to be distributed to organizations helping people on the Gulf Coast and New Orleans to rebuild and return. In unity with the artist, RCA Records will be donating the bulk of its net profits to benefit musicians in the New Orleans area, so this is a very noble cause deserving of everyone's support.

The CD opens with "New Orleans Shall Rise Again," a Winston original inspired by favorite New Orleans pianists. Spirited and determined, this piece is a great way to begin and is indicative of what is to come on the album. "Creole Moon" by Dr. John is much darker, and Winston's touch is very percussive. James Booker's "Pixie" is a lighthearted highlight. Winston says in the liner notes that Booker has influenced his overall piano playing more than anyone, and Winston seems to feel very comfortable in this style, with its repetitive walking bass and all-over-the-piano right hand. "Stevenson" is a beautiful Winston original dedicated to a dear friend who died last year, filmmaker Stevenson J. Palfi. Sad and reflective, it is a loving tribute and eulogy. Parts 1 and 2 of "Gulf Coast Lullaby" are full of the vast open spaces that Winston is known for. These two pieces and "Stevenson" are much more ballads than blues, and since they are placed consecutively on the CD, feel right at home between the toe-tappers. "When The Saints Go Marching In" begins with a dark and stormy prelude that barely hints of what is coming. Once Winston gets cooking with the song itself, it is unfettered joy and the boisterous good time that is expected in New Orleans. With almost twelve minutes to explore the themes of the song, Winston really lets loose. "Blues for Fess, Beloved" ends the CD with a mournful piece inspired by Professor Longhair (Henry Roeland Byrd), who founded the New Orleans piano scene in the late 1940's. The inspiration for and a strong influence on many, if not all, of the New Orleans-style pianists to follow, this is a sweet and fitting finale to an excellent benefit CD. Recommended!

Definitely worth the donation.......2006-08-08

The track by Norah Jones and Wyclef Jean, alone, is worth the purchase price. I am surprised no one else has commented on it. To me, this juxtaposition of voices and styles is truly powerful and moving. Norah Jones' contribution is a soft, sad, lamentation -- it ebbs and flows like the waters of the Mississippi. Wyclef Jean then punctuates the sad lullaby with his poignant rap -- "I hear the engine on the boat, but y'all cant see me waving the flag, somebody please wave the flag!" The overall effect of this juxtaposition is truly powerful and it makes me cry for New Orleans every time I hear it. It brings images of people on roofs waving flags, rescue workers saving lost and frightened dogs in the flood waters, big X's on houses destroyed and deserted. Bonnie Raitt, Aaron Neville, Harry Conick Jr, and Van Morrison also make excellent contributions. While I am not a fan of about 30% of the songs, I would never consider this $15 a waste of money.

I love patti I have everything by her from cd's to dvd's to watching her show on tv one! I only bought the cd because she was on it. She sounded great and so did all the other artists but kelly price kept singing over patti and i hated that! She just needed to shut up she sounded awfull. They should have let patti sing more though other than that it was great! BUY IT NOW!

A forever gem.......2006-02-26

This is a great example what a benefit/relief effort is all about; people from all loctions focused on one goal. Many genres of musical talent helping one key national crisis. A personal friend and favorite in the Arizona Music Scene is the great Jerry Lawson who teams with his new a capella venture, "Talk Of The Town" and the magnificent Rod Stewart on Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready".

Every cut on this cd is wonderful. Our entire family loves it, and we have jazz/pop/hip hop/rap fans! I bought it for one song and was shocked to see so many great songs...it is well worth the money. I had never heard a few of the artists, but I am now a loyal fan. The songs with huge choirs of singing stars were such a bonus. Sadly, I couldn't find any of the words for the songs on any lyric site on the Internet or in the CD. It would be nice to have those lyrics...that's my only criticism. Great music!

Disappointing.......2006-01-31

The good news is that the money went to an excellent cause. The bad news is that the choice of artists and songs were not, in my opinion, worth listening to.

I remember when I was little, I had this cd, but i lost it. I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far.

This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.

Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07

I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

Rounder Records is releasing A Celebration of New Orleans Music to Benefit MusiCares Hurricane Relief 2005. All proceeds will go to the MusiCares Hurricane Relief Fund, providing assistance to musicians and other music industry people directly affected by Hurricane Katrina.

As a New Orleans area native (Mandeville) this CD brings me back to my musical roots. It is simply outstanding. It's rare these days to buy a CD that is listenable from start ot finish, however this is certainly one of them. Sing Me Back home is frankly one of the better CDs I've purchased in recent memory!

ok---I haven't heard the whole cd yet, and I'm sorry to see that others who have reviewed it were disappointed that certain cuts were 'cut'. HOWEVER, I'm about to purchase this cd based solely upon the one cut I heard yesterday on our local music station WWOZ in New Orleans. What I heard was Irvin Mayfield's "Just a Closer Walk With Thee". It's INSANELY GOOD. Being from New Orleans, I've heard this tune done dozens of different ways...and I've heard Irvin Mayfield live dozens of times...but this is beyond amazing. At least try to hear this cut IN FULL. This is a 'turn off the lights and concentrate' sort of offering.

You can't listen to this CD without Katrina's aftermath running through your mind. That doesn't make it a sad listening experience, just a very meaningful one beyond just the sounds coming through the speakers.
There's jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues... all the sounds that made New Orleans a music mecca. The performers are the best (Wynton Marsalis, Norah Jones, Aaron Neville, James Taylor, Buckwheat Zydeco and others).
Treat yourself to this stellar collection of artists/songs and do something to benefit New Orleans at the same time.

Borrowing the Beatles' haircuts, the Kinks' mod guitar riffs and the Small Faces' ecstatic tambourine-shaking choruses, Mando Diao isn't exactly making the kind of great artistic strides one might expect from the likes of Bloc Party or the Arcade Fire. In fact, listening to the Swedish quartet's second album it's often hard to tell 2005 from 1965. But Mando Diao plies the well-worn maximum R&B formula on Hurricane Bar with so much excitement and enthusiasm, its creative shortcomings are easy to forgive. Singers Bjorn Dixgard and Gustaf Noren make great counterparts, especially on tracks like "God Knows" and "If I Leave You," where their vocals ricochet off each other and the rolling organs and punchy British Invasion rhythms. Credit also goes to producer Richard Rainey (U2's All That You Can't Keep Behind) for making the songs crackle. With the Libertines having fallen apart and Oasis nodding off, the time for Mando Diao's retro rock just might be now. --Aidin Vaziri

If you're looking for some new stuff to get into, this is definitely the CD to buy. It's really good and full of awesome songs. You'll be the coolest kid on the block and people will ask you "Hey what you are listenin' to?" and you'll say "Mando Diao." and then they'll say "Never heard of them, but they're really good. Can you burn me a copy?" It's that good. Can't Steal My Love and Down in the Past are my favorite songs. Definitely check them out.

Sweden's (The World's) Absolute Finest!.......2006-01-25

Mando Diao should be today's Beatles. However, too many people just have crappy taste in music and Mando Diao just do not get the adoration they deserve. They are rock geniuses, writing perfect melodies and lyrics.

Out of five stars, this album is a ten

Having two singers in the band with distinctly different styles of singing are even more reminiscent of The Beatles. They deserve to have the red carpet rolled out wherever they go.

Hurricane Bar and their previous album Bring 'Em In are just amazing.

Mando Diao lovers should also try to find their B-side songs, which are some of the greatest songs but unfortunately are rare and most are unheard of.

The Editorial Review (provided by Amazon above) is EXTREMELY misleading when it chides Mando Diao for lacking creativity. As a musician, a music enthusiast, and a music fan, I have to say this album (and it's predacessor) have convinced me that a few bands are still in the business of making beautiful music for fun. Perhaps the overdriven Gibson through an old vox amp reminds some people of other bands...but to assert that Mando Diao are copying the Kinks is a joke and shows an amateur bent for appreciating good music. The Kinks could learn quite a bit from Mando Diao. Words don't do this album justice. Have a listen!

Impressive.......2005-11-06

How did such ostensibly nice Swedish working-class lads come up with a name like Mando Diao? To an English-speaking-skewed mind like my own, it's a bit misleading, and before listening, I figured them for a Portuguese pop act, or a Brazilian rock band. Well, it'll be a cold day in hell before these guys warm up for the Gypsy Kings, and if they ever do, I hope that a few ambulances are at hand, because they will leave the crowd shell-shocked. Mando Diao are the latest (and one of the best) bands in the recent onslaught of fresh, pure rock and roll coming from the outposts of Europe. I don't want to compare them to the Strokes, the Hives, or Jet, although the temptation is strong. There's a bit of the Clash meets Generation X about their sound, more than a touch of Oasis about their pub-based image, and even a hint of the Beatles in their one/two punch of dual singer/songwriters. Too many new bands determine their posture before they develop a sound, but Mando Diao sound as if they are doing what comes naturally, and having some fun while doing it.
Hurricane Bar progresses with a wild abandon that suits the album title. The sound is youthful energy, slightly naïve but also self-aware. The lyrics are almost totally indecipherable - and even the lyric sheet doesn't help much, since the words rarely make much literal sense - but there are substantial hooks all over the record, and melodies that suck you in and don't let go. I don't know what song will be chosen, but "Clean Town" ought to be the first single, since it fires on all cylinders and does the best job of summing up the band's unique way of making a train wreck sound melodic and fun. Pardon my filthy mind, but "Down in the Past" (one of the few tunes where I could discern some meaning to the words) could (and should) do just as well, provided conservative radio stations don't pick up the same sexual allusions that I do.
Although most of the CD rocks like a garage band on steroids, there are moments of genuine diversity that proves them to be more than a one trick pony. "Added Family" is a moody tune that suggests vintage Robyn Hitchcock, while "All My Senses" features an organ break that makes cheeky reference to the Doors' "Light My Fire". There's even a charming acoustic tune called `Ringing Bells" which helps to pace the record quite nicely.
Today's pop charts might indicate that the glory days of rock and roll are long over, but the current upsurge in talented, hard-hitting bands indicates otherwise. At present, the movement is limited to those with `alternative' tastes, but bands like Mando Diao sound destined for fame and fortune. Who knows, maybe this Swedish band with a Portuguese-sounding name might be the next in line to prove, once again, that rock and roll will never really die. A- Tom Ryan

A favorite of folk fans in the Boston area, the singer-songwriter makes a striking bid for a broader audience with her third release. The propulsive "East of the Mountains" and "Short Work" benefit from the backbeat of former Morphine drummer Billy Conway (Delmhorst's co-producer), while "Hurricane" builds to a furious climax through the Neil Young-style guitar squall of Kevin Barry. Multi-instrumentalist Delmhorst seasons various tracks with fiddle, cello, and guitars. Though her breathy, brooding vocals can occasionally sound a bit mannered--giving a cloying quality to the overly precious "Hummingbird"--most of the musical settings reinforce the power of her elemental imagery. If you needed proof that the best songwriters out there are not the most famous, Kris is it. Her voice will floor you and her lyrics will pick you back up again. Buy this album, and then go and buy Red Bird, her collaboration with P. Mulvey and J. Foucault. You won't regret it.

Delmhorsts songs are strong, implacable and iconic. In this album she really abandons the personal-confessional style of 90s-era acoustic songwriting -- and fully comes into her own, using the pure voice of metaphor, myth, and image. Delmhorst loves the negative image -- "Baby, you're no train, you're the track" ... "no more weathervane, I'm gonna be the wind / no more turn around" -- and through her gorgeous low voice you can hear the muscle of her language rippling powerfully beneath.

And what a voice! It grows dark, menacing in minor in the likes of "East of the Mountains," "Weathervane" and "Come Home on the Train," and so sweet and gauzelike in "Juice + June" and (especially) "Mingalay" that the hard of heart would grow teary-eyed to hear her.

Simply put, this album is a keeper.

Trains and Hurricanes!.......2005-02-13

I don't buy much North American music, though you'll find Caroline Lavelle, Loreena Mckennitt, Mae Moore, Sarah McLachlan, October Project, Paul Simon, Kristine W, Milla Jovovich, and Over the Rhine in my collection (all of these, by the way, are recommended). Kris Delmhorst was unknown to me until just a few weeks ago. Based on a personal recommendation (thanks a million, Katie!) I bought it, and I have been listening to it almost non-stop since. I adore this album!

To those unfamiliar with this artist, her voice is somewhat reminiscent of McLachlan's, but the songs are moodier, less contrived, and seem more personal than McLachlan's. In that respect, her work has more in common with Mae Moore, but with a more visceral approach.

Several of the songs contain imagery of trains and hurricanes, the reasons for which are mysterious....

Why isn't she a star?.......2004-05-17

I love female singer-songwriters-- I'm a huge fan of Gillian Welch as well as Joni Mitchell, Ani Difranco, the Indigo Girls, Lucinda Williams, Alison Krauss, Norah Jones, etc. I'm always on the lookout for more to add to list, and if you'll let me mix my metaphors, Kris Delmhorst is a diamond in a haystack. Her voice and lyrics are beautiful and I'm really surprised that she isn't better known. Thank goodness I happened upon amazon's free download because I had never heard of this amazing woman. I went right out and bought all of her CDs and every last one is worth it. The songs range from mellow and introspective to rollicking and bluegrassy. If you like Alison Kruass, Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell, or the Indigo Girls I almost guarantee you'll appreciate Kris's albums.

One more time.......2004-03-13

This is one of those rare cds that I can listen to for days at a time and not get tired or annoyed. There is quite the musical mix and yet Kris's voice is constantly blending in perfectly as it floats over the music. This cd has it all: upbeat 'bluegrassy' songs such as "Bobby Lee", "East of The Mountains", "Come Home" and "Short Work". It has slow, jazzy songs "Waiting Under the Waves" and "Juice+June". Then there are the more 'rocky' songs "Wasted Word", "Weathervane". And of course, my personal favorites, the sad, mellow songs that really allow Kris's vocals to shine "Too Late", "You're No Train", and "Mingalay". "Hummingbird" is one of the most beautiful songs I have EVER heard and it is my favorite of this cd. I can get lost in this music and that is a good thing. Kris has a unique and soulful voice that can put me to sleep or get me excited to be alive. I love this cd and highly recommend it to all!!

Unforgettable Voice, Beautiful Music.......2004-01-27

Admittedly, I'm a sucker for great women singers. But on this album Kris Delmhorst shows she has much more than a distinctive voice, bringing a thematically linked set of songs together with some wonderful musicianship by Delmhorst and her band. And yet, it really is Delmhorst's voice that makes this an album to listen to both casually and carefully... repeatedly. But while you listen, you'll also find that this CD shows lots of respect for folk music styles. A sample of the songs and why I can't stop listening:

"East of the Mountains"
This country ballad displays something of Delmhorst's feel for a range of music styles. The voice here has all the rich texture of the gentler songs on the album, but applied to a quick-tempo tale of a woman "sent away" by her family, never to see her lover again, Delmhorst registers both sensual longing and resilient anger.

"Bobby Lee"
Of the many songs on the album that give Delmhorst a chance to really give the warmth of her voice full sway, this along with "Mingalay" may be the best. And while the star here is the wonderful tone of voice that gives the song's simple melody its full emotional range, the more I listen, the more I find myself thinking about its subject... the difficulty of "rolling the stone away" in a maybe-permanently broken relationship.

This song is a great example of just how resourceful a musician Delmhorst is, neither just a singer nor just a songwriter. You sense here that the album has a non-ostentatious feel for making use of its range of resources, much like you do when you listen to Merrie Amsterberg's "Little Steps" or Lucinda Williams' "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" (as different as those artists are from Delmhorst).

"Juice and June"
At her most sultry here, Delmhorst and her band take it slow to get across the beauty of dancing toward passion, under the influence of "juice and June." The lovely risks of letting yourself fall too soon, which are slyly linked here to the pleasures of indulging in the music itself, give the song that wonderful quality of being a song about falling that lures its listener into falling for the song's own "juice and June."

"Hurricane"
I just have to begin by saying that this one sends chills down my spine. Again, and again. Why? Well, the song is about loving (someone's) storminess. It's an appealing tune, makes you want to sing it. And while the lyrics aren't unnecessarily tangled up with poetry... the texture of Delmhorst's voice gets a hold of the passion without histrionics... that is, through singing in the purest sense, not a display of singing. She handles the song the way a great actor does a great monologue, letting the material fully register in herself and show her the way to give it voice. And so she let's the song unfold toward its stormy closing instrumental burst in a way that feels organic.

"Come Home"
A song that could show up on a Gillian Welch album, here played simply with background rain effects, and sung with that remarkable voice. Listen to it on headphones to hear how Delmhorst keeps it simple and yet there's nothing simple in a voice working with a song's genre to capture its expressive range while staying true to its style.

"Wasted Word"
A sweet tune, about making the "wasted" past right in the lovely present. Pain has never looked so sweet, sincerely so, but you can't sing this song and make it believable unless you have a voice that can capture pain and beauty at once.

"Short Work"
A sort of country shuffle on betrayal and paying it back. Again, Delmhorst knows how to work within the song's shape to texture it musically but not interfere with the expressive potentials that it has as written.

"Mingalay"
An album that circles its hurricane theme throughout would not be complete without a traditional sailor's ballad... given a thoughtful update here through Delmhorst's final verse that complements the song's traditional look homeward from the sea with a look out to sea from those waiting on land. Played here with a bluesy sultriness, the song allows Delmhorst to handle the melody with a characteristic mix of aching tenderness and passion.

And again, you'll be torn between singing along and listening in rapt silence. To me, a singer who can cultivate precisely this conflict in the listener must be doing something right.

Throughout the 1980s, "We are the Scorpions!" was lead vocalist Klaus Meine's concert-opening battle cry, energizing and readying the faithful in sold-out stadiums for a Teutonic onslaught of vital, sometimes plodding, eardrum-splitting rock anthems. In short, the arena-rock monsters were never a picnic-under-the-stars kind of band ... until Moment of Glory. The new millennium brings the Scorpions full circle, melding in-your-face party anthems like "Rock You Like a Hurricane" (now called "Hurricane 2000") and "Big City Nights" into fully orchestrated concoctions featuring the Berlin Philharmoniker. Where the grandiose likes of "Wind of Change" and "Still Loving You" are obvious choices for such a pairing, and indeed, work well, the "Deadly Sting Suite," with almost unrecognizable instrumental versions of "He's a Woman, She's a Man" and "Dynamite," will likely catch the unknowing fan of classic Scorps off guard. Both Deep Purple and Metallica have used full orchestras to accent their songs with mixed results, and the same goes for the Scorps. Got me hooked on Scorpions.......2007-04-12

I absolutely love the marriage of rock and symphony here. It's gorgeous. The Scorpions take already amazing songs and pump them up an extra notch. A long time ago I heard "Still Loving You" on the radio, not knowing who sung it. It took me years to finally discover the Scorpions. I own two different versions of "Still Loving You," and I far prefer this one to the original. It gives me this yearning inside. The only thing I don't like about this album is the guest vocalists. I love Klaus Meine. He adds an ethereal element to the music, and with the guest vocals, it takes away from the beauty, in my opinion. But don't let that deter you from getting this, because it is so worth it. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" is amazing! It's all amazing!

With metal music it is always louder is better and this album found one of the coolest ways to make metal louder. Combining the Scorpions with a the Philharmonic creates one of the coolest sounding albums I have ever heard.

i dont own this album but i have heard the songs off of it and i think their all great and performed well. and also as a side note since i read alot of comments about the guest vocals on "big city nights" but no mention of who: it is Ray Wilson best known for replacing Phill Collins in Genesis and recording the classic Calling all Stations

Just when you think the scorpions couldn't do worst...they prove you wrong!
Even Metallica's s&m is better...close but still.
I am sure that it was a great experience to live, for the band and the audience, because that type of event is always unique and can bring strong emotions-unless you have a dumb..s sitting next to you, drinkin' beer and screaming every five minutes Dynamiiiiiiite!!-but on cd...for me it doesn't do it,but it probably is a treasure for those who were there.
Now, I'm not gonna start the debat with DEEP PURPLE and the LSO(1999) but I was there at the Royal Albert Hall and that's why I can understand the concept and the thrill of holding the recording of such concerts...but still DEEP PURPLE 's symphonic album features something that neither Scorpions or Metallica holds...and this is an ORIGINAL PIECE OF MUSIC CREATED FOR A GROUP AND A ORCHESTRA!
