Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Different Perspective.......2006-07-13

Vitamin records has been releasing these cd's like wild fires, just spreading orchestral music to the lesser audience of it. This cd will give you the rock music that originally started this who phenomenon (apocalyptica).

This cd is great for anyone interested in hearing the depth of a music genre. Typically when you hear a rock song, you dont hear really how the singer is supposed to influence the musical sense of the songs, but when the singer's role is put into a more balanced/equal role with the rest of the musicians, it contributes so much more to the musicality of the song. It is great for beginner musicians to understand that the singer has to be in tune with the band because he is added depth to the music, not just vocals. College music majors might also get a kick out of this album as it widens your music perspective.

These cds from vitamin really show how rock is the next evolution to classical music, it shows that although lyrics were originally added, the artists used the basic form of classical music to write songs. They all contain a theme that is repeated in the music, and most offer a "waltz" part to the song, as well as a lyrical bridge.

Good cd for every so often to change you from the norm. really neat to switch out the lyrics every so often with some classical music. Enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Not Much To Warrant Repeated Listenings.......2005-01-30

Over the past five years, Vitamin Records has released more than fifty of these String Quartet Tribute albums. They have run the gamut from Metallica to Clay Aiken to Alison Krauss to their most recent tribute to 2Pac. This sampler focuses primarily on alternative/heavy metal/grunge artists. So what you get is a collection of songs made famous by Staind ("It's Been Awhile"), Linkin Park ("In the End") and Korn ("Freak on a Leash").

This album (and all of the others) veers awfully close to novelty status. On first listen, it's a real charge to hear teen angst anthems like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" transformed into sedate chamber music. But it doesn't really warrant repeated listenings. The main problem is that after a few songs, they all tend to sound alike. Twenty years ago, the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet would include a Jimi Hendrix composition in live performances and the occasional recording, but they had the sense to know that this wouldn't work over the course of an entire album.

And the idea of juxtaposing classical instruments with popular music goes back even farther. In the sixties, the Hollyridge Strings released a series of albums performing the works of the Beatles, Elvis and the Beach Boys. Bottom line? This album will force you to hear these songs in a new way and might get a laugh or two if you slip it into the CD player at your next party, but there's little here to make you come back after you've heard it once. But at $6.98, it's an inexpensive gag gift for the alternative music fan in your life. [Running Time - 50:37]

Sàndor, still active at 90 as this reissue appears, was a student of Bartók and a preferred interpreter of his music. Since this set appeared on nine LPs in the early 1960s, it has been the standard for Bartók's piano music; in this fine-sounding reissue, it still is. Sàndor can hit hard enough for such virtuoso pieces as the Piano Sonata and "Out of Doors," but he also retains the romantic element heard in the composer's own playing which tempers the harsher qualities of the music. While this collection isn't quite as complete as advertised (some early, insignificant piano music by Bartók is omitted), it includes all of Bartók's significant piano music, including such relatively obscure gems as the Bagatelles, eight Improvisations, and many delectable folk arrangements which will appeal even to listeners who think Bartók is too challenging for them. Vox's recorded sound, superbly remastered, resists obsolescence as effectively as Sàndor's performances. Even with the inclusion of the early books of "Mikrokosmos," which will appeal mostly to piano students, this set is worth several times the asking price. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Microcosmos.......2007-03-08

Sándor was a champion not only of Bartók's music but also of Bartók's style of playing. He often complained that people were too quick to see Bartók as ultra-modern, and to fail to appreciate the rich seam of lyricism that also runs through his music.

The piano music is dominated by short pieces, many of them written for piano students, notably the collections "Microcosmos" and "For Children". These, together with suites of folk dance arrangements, make up the bulk of the solo piano output.

Sandór plays these short, and often simple pieces, with neither too much nor too little art. As a gifted teacher, he knew unerringly how much music each of these small vessels held. The result is beguiling - but be warned: no-one can listen to the 153 short pieces of Microcosmos end-to-end. This is an anthology to be dipped into, not swallowed whole.

The remastering is pretty successful (fortunately - some of Vox's CD reissues are plagued by severe deterioration of the original tapes). And it's for half nothing-what's not to like?

4 out of 5 stars Great value with a few flaws.......2006-07-28

I am not a Bartok expert by any scale, but I do like the way these pieces, without exception, are played. There are, however, a couple of other problems.

As mentioned by an earlier reviewer, very few of the works are split into tracks - Mikrokosmos is divided into 7 for each of its six volumes, and to accomodate for a full CD. In these seven tracks there are 121 songs. I would have much preferred if the songs had been split into tracks. Almost the entire CD set is this way - Fifteen Hungarian Songs is one track, Fourteen Bagatelles, etc. It is very annoying when one wants to hear a particular song in those tracks and not the others.

Another detriment to the collection is the recording quality. It is decent most of the time, but in loud sections the piano buzzes. One might be able to ignore it, but I think that it detracts from the passion of the forte quite a bit.

Overall, for $18 it is pretty decent, but if you are like me and like to keep your music library neatly organized (and aren't extremely cheap), I would not recommend this set.

3 out of 5 stars eeh, I guess I don't like Bartok that much.......2006-07-25

I like the fact that Bartok is into the folk tradition and all, but he just tends to forget the fact that melody has to be SOMEWHERE in the music. I'm all for creative expression when you're sitting alone at the piano, but abstract music should be reserved for performance art. I like playing some of your stuff Bela, but I just don't want to listen to you.

5 out of 5 stars Best classical value out there.......2005-10-05

To put this set in perspective, for months I would go to my local Tower Records fishing for worthwhile classical CDs at least once a week. One of the discs that sat in the bins the longest was a single CD of Bartok piano music, played by Zoltan Kocsis. It was Volume 7 of a complete series. This CD listed for $17.99, and as long as I went to that Tower Records, it did not budge an inch, nor was its price amended.

Now, Kocsis is one of the greatest pianists alive, and if anyone is worthy of commanding a premium, it is him. And to be fair, that CD is going to be re-released on October 11 as part of a Collector's Edition - eight CDs, $63.97 MSRP. But it's already going up against this little gem, which contains five CDs with all of the truly great solo-piano works by an internationally recognized Bartok specialist for $21 - not much more than the cost of one CD from the other set. This kind of value is not to be taken lightly.

I came to this set with my impression of Sandor informed by his complete Prokofiev - ultra-hard, sometimes rhythmically slack, always melodically lacking in some way or another. But he held a very special feeling for Bartok, and saved his best playing for the great Hungarian. In passages like the first of the Three Csik Dances, the opening of the Improvisations Op. 20, or in the Ten Easy Pieces, there is a simplicity, charm and wistful homesickness that is quite touching. In pieces like the Out of Doors suite, the Sonata, or the Burlesques, there is a vicious, impulsive energy, a wicked sense of humor and an overabundance of overtones. It is never mindless, inappropriate or even overly harsh - it's just very, very loud.

In this set I like best the endless landscape of the Sonatina, the unusual colors and fragrances in the Etudes, the brilliantly conceived Bear Dance (the last of the Ten Easy Pieces), and the multifaceted, complex, gorgeous Improvisations. Any fan of Bartok should hear these.

4 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the music and performance.......2005-04-04

This is a fantastic deal, but the problem with this Collection stems from the fact that the pieces are often not separated by tracks. This is especially annoying for the Children's Pieces and Mikrokosmos. There are so many pieces, one wears out the fast forward button and still may miss the particular piece one is looking for. The booklet is fairly insightful, and the performer is widely hailed as the supreme interpreter of Bartok's piano music. So aside from this slightly annoying at times and ridiculously annoying at other times flaw, this is one of the best deals in Classical music. Don't hesitate. Add it to the cart.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Hamlet sound track - Patrick Doyle.......2006-03-10

I spent a lot of time trying to get hold of this CD but I must say I am mildly disappointed. I thought Patrick Doyle's music for Branagh's Henry V was brilliant and that was why I was determined to obtain this sound track as well. Henry V is not Hamlet in terms of theme and plot but I think the music here tends to be too low key and lacking in drive, unlike Henry V. It is still very good in places and clearly the work of an excellent composer, but not quite up to Doyle's previous standard.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful masterpiece!!.......2002-02-22

Patrick Doyle has truly composed an awesome piece of work. The score is so well done that you can feel the emotion coming through the music alone. This is by far my favorite soundtrack and I listen to it quite often.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collaborations.......2001-06-12

Doyle fans are aware that he collaborates regularly with actor/director, Kenneth Brannagh. With the Hamlet score, he again writes powerful complementary music which also stands alone as worthy to be performed in concert. I would be interested to hear lengthier tracks such as accompanied the lengthy, but indeed beautiful and patient, movie. (The only mistake was Billy Crystal in the movie. I thought Robin Williams did fine work.) Although, I confess, this is my least listened to in my soundtrack collection, I do enjoy it, and believe it deserves accolades.

5 out of 5 stars Patrick Doyle's finest score.......2000-06-26

This is certainly one of my top 3 Patrick Doyle scores and a towering achievement. The score unfolds like a great romantic symphony encompassing several moods from serenity and inner peace ("In Pace"), to violence and lush gothic undertones ("The Ghost", "Now, could I drink hot blood"), and a finaly sense of joyous celebration ("Fanfare", "What Players are they?"). After listening constantly to Mr. Doyle's scores for "Henry V", "Much ado about nothing" and "Frankenstein", I thought he could never top such achievements and somehow he did: "Hamlet" is a masterpiece of thematic inventiveness and dramatic power. The playing is wonderful and the engineering is very clear, taking full advantage of Air Lyndhurst's glorious acoustics. If you are a fan of british classical music or a Shakespeare fan (or even better, a fan of Patrick Doyle), don't pass up this CD. Great film music. No: great music. Period!

5 out of 5 stars Masterful interpretation of Bartok's piano works.......2005-10-21

Without a doubt Bartok is one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. Combining a deep understanding of the possibilities of eastern European folk music - particularly Hungarian and Romanian - with an extremely advanced harmonic and rhythmic vocabulary, Bartok composed some of the greatest works of the last century.

Although Bartok wrote some sublime orchestral music (The Music for strings, percussion and celeste comes instantly to mind), it is in the realms of string quartet and solo piano music that Bartok reigns supreme among 20th century composers in the humble opinion of this reviewer.

So. Here is an 8 CD set of all of Bartok's solo piano music by (argueably) the pre-eminent interpreter of his piano music. These are insightful, passionate performances beautifully recorded.

I for one am thrilled to have this set - particularly since many of these CDs were unavailable up till now. The box is also very reasonably priced compared to the separate CDs.

Highly recommended - modern music begins here.

5 out of 5 stars Unusually sensitive and fluid Bartok.......2005-02-19

I am so sad to have arrived so late to this CD. It is quite possible that opinions by some reviewers may have helped to doom it, at least on Amazon. As a result, I am sorry to have to inform potential listeners this late in the market cycle, but Max Levinson plays these pieces with a rare degree of virtuosity, flexibility, and sensitivity. As with most music, Bartok's music can be played in any number of ways successfuly, but it is hard to imagine a performance any better than what is presented here.

I will confess that my bias comes from a long-time familiarity with Bartok's own recordings, which show his own brilliance as a pianist. What strikes me about Levinson is how closely he approaches Bartok's own fluid sense of line, harnessed as it is to a rock solid, yet flexible sense of tempo. (My favorite recital from Bartok, in this respect, is his recording of the Beethoven Kreutzer Sonata with Szigetti at the violin.)

The whole effect is given additional depth by his seemingly infinite gradient of touch, which allows him to follow Bartok's sometimes accelerating and repetitive waves with the finest increases in intensity. That same touch, as in The Night's Music from the "Out of Doors Suite" or in the Molto Tranquillo from the "Dance Suite," offers up a multi-dimensional canvas of sound from the lightest breath to the sharpest, yet still softly fleeting pulsation, made altogether whole by a ceaseless forward movement. No matter the languidness of tempo, the motion never stagnates.

These pieces vary greatly in difficulty, yet he approaches them all with an equal wealth of attention to detail. The "Romanian Folk Dances," for example, among the more facile gems, he never rushes, no matter how quickly he dashes them off. He never leaves so much as a note unspoken, or the slightest phrase unexpressed. And, again, his rubato flows ever within the logic of the entire line, never pressed to excess or left dangling in incompleteness.

The "Sonata" and "Allegro barbaro," among the strongest and more difficult of the works, are filled with staccato clusters, yet they sing thanks to his infinitely fluid touch. His sound never spreads even in the most punctuated moments. He never loses the music in what lesser pianists might find only noise.

If you can still find this CD on Amazon (at least a few were still available for my purchase), you should be richly rewarded by it. I recently heard Levinson in concert for the first time and I can only hope that we are fortunate to have more recordings from him. (One other equally rich recording of music from Brahms, Schumann, Schoenberg, and Kirchner is available as of this writing.) It is a sad fact that in our time, pianists who 30 years ago would have inspired a generation can remain all but anonymous. Whether by fate or choice, Max Levinson is clearly one of these.

1 out of 5 stars Not all Music Fans are correct.......2001-03-30

Sorry, Music Fan, but I have to agree with the other reviewer. I bought this CD having heard nothing but wonderful things about Levinson's playing and am incredibly disappointed at the result. After a single listening I took it to a used book store and traded it away. As a Regents' Professor of Piano, I too have played many of these works and am afraid that Levinson's performances are not even up to my students' standards, let alone mine. Please do yourself a favor and do not buy this recording. You will only regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Bartók performance.......2001-03-18

Bartók (1881-1945) collected native folk songs from Hungary, North Africa, and the Balkans, as inspiration for his own compositions. His music is high-class, like Mozart's or Beethoven's, yet it expresses a side of humanity far different than that expressed by almost any other composer. Because Bartók was influenced by folk music he conveys the simple elements of life which are often overlooked by those composers influenced by high society. Part of his genius is in his special appreciation for nature. His music seems to draw parallels between humans and nature, perhaps exploring instinct and fear and other aspects of life in the wild.

Perhaps one of the difficulties in performing Bartók is in conveying the music without infusing it with one's own, personal "feelings". Levinson, a young pianist now receiving critical acclaim world-wide, surpasses this difficulty. His interpretations express the full character and vigor of folk music and the dramatic beauty and wildness of nature, with exceptional clarity. His unabashed, bold, yet sensitive style is well suited for this composer. Having performed some of these works myself, including the Sonata, I can recommend this recording as one of the best. Bartók "experts" will appreciate Levinson's command of the instrument and the music, and other first-time listeners will likely find this a refreshing variety of pieces for their classical collection. Some alternative recordings are the live recital recording of the Sonata played by Martha Argerich, and the Out of Doors Suite with pianist Murray Perahia.

1 out of 5 stars Levinson Should Stay Indoors.......2001-02-22

Would it be an exaggeration if I said that this was probably the worst recording of Bartok's solo piano pieces on the market? Probably not. Levinson's playing is flat, colorless, and seemingly devoid of any musicality or feeling. Add to this liner notes that are as cutesy as cutesy can be, and you have a CD that is bound for the bargain bin. Save your money - or better yet, purchase Kovecavich's or Kocsis' wonderful recordings of these pieces.

5 out of 5 stars LSD, booze, madness, and full moons.......2007-07-07

Throughout most of the 1970s and 1980s, a syndicated radio show called "Innerview" was a Monday night favorite across America. Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana, Pink Floyd, and many other legendary artists were the feature of the music interview series that was hosted by legendary Los Angeles disc jockey Jim Ladd. Perhaps no other "Innerview" was as intriguing, though, as the first ever four-part special that was devoted to The Doors.

After taking two years to produce, the shows aired around the same time the bestselling book "No One Here Gets Out Alive" was released. They were originally broadcast for one hour each week for four weeks in the summer of 1979 (eight years after the death of Jim Morrison). The radio special assumed the same name as the book when it was made into an LP boxed set. This vinyl release was limited to just 150 copies and many ended up in the personal record collections of radio station employees. But before long, bootleg versions began circulating on cassette tape.

The audio of this four cd set was taken from the original vinyl, and as a result, the background crackling that is associated with vinyl is ever-present. It never really causes much of an annoyance, though. All commercials and have been edited out, reducing each episode to about 45 minutes. (One episode is on each disc.)

The shows are very well produced. About as much time is devoted to The Doors' music as to interviews, and the music highlights the topics well. Song segments range from a few seconds to a few minutes and are often played as background music to the conversations. The three remaining Doors members, Robbie Krieger, John Densmore, and Ray Manzarek, were interviewed separately. It would have been great if they had been interviewed together, in the same room, but as is, they each seem to have opened up to Jim Ladd like they would an old friend. Also interviewed are original manager of The Doors, Bill Siddons; founder of The Fillmore, Bill Graham; The Doors' concert promoter, Rich Linnell; and The Doors' second manager and author of the book "No One Here Gets Out Alive," Danny Sugerman. Singer Alice Cooper also makes a brief appearance.

This cd set makes for fascinating listening for any fan of The Doors or for any FM radio fan who longs for the days when radio was great. Of course, drug references are prevalent. Ray Manzarek mentions that when The Doors were first beginning, marijuana and The Rolling Stones blew their minds. It seems the list would eventually include LSD, booze, "madness," and "the full moon."

There are some stories included here that only the members of The Doors could tell. On the first disc, one of those stories is John Densmore telling how he and the other two musicians in The Doors could control Morrison on stage. Referring to Jim, John reveals that the band could "steer him around at times." They could "rile him up" or "make him go into some dance" by playing a certain way. The three talked about this to one another, but never to Jim. "He was so open," John explains as the reason Jim Morrison could be controlled in such a way. "He lived in the subconscious, it seemed like."

The four-disc set takes many somewhat shallow excursions into obvious topics. Oliver Stone recreated many of these stories after he was given a copy of the radio special to use as a source for his movie about the band. There are some little gems, however, that can undoubtedly be found nowhere else. The end of disc two has Ray telling us about one such gem, the quick story of "Cigar Pain." "Cigar Pain" was the nickname given to a hard-to-get-rid-of guy who occasionally hung around the band. He apparently burned his throat with a cigar to make his voice sound more like Morrison's. "Cigar Pain," according to what Ray had heard, eventually killed his mother and then himself. Man, these guys have some stories to tell!

On disc three, actual audio of the infamous Miami show is included. What can be heard is Jim Morrison yelling at the audience. What, of course, can't be heard ...and what probably never actually happened... was Jim "exposing" himself to that audience. Regardless, Morrison was charged with the crime and The Doors' single, "Love Me Two Times," was pulled off top-40 stations around the country. Robbie Krieger talks openly about that incident. "It ruined our career for at least a year," he laments. "It probably was one of the contributing factors to the demise of The Doors." It's incredible to hear both actual audio and first-hand accounts of such a pivotal moment in the life of the band and of their ill-fated singer.

In the episode on the final disc, we hear Jim Morrison recite his poems "Hitler" and "Cemetery Poem," both of which, as of 1979, were never before aired or published. (In 1983, a loose performance of "Cemetery Poem," called "Graveyard Poem," was released. It's part of the version of "Light My Fire" heard on the album "Alive She Cried." "Adolph Hitler" is the poem where Jim, uh, tells us what he did with a female Hitler last night.)

One of the most fascinating segments revisits the persisting idea that Jim Morrison may still be alive. Ray and John both agree that the possibility of Morrison still living (and, it's mentioned, living in Africa) does exist. When Robbie Krieger is interviewed on the topic, he mentions that, after Jim's death, there was no autopsy performed and practically no one saw the body. Morrison's girlfriend Pam, who was with the singer when he died, never really cleared up many of the mysteries surrounding his death before her own death a few years later. Robbie inquires suddenly, "is this on tape?" When Jim Ladd asks Robbie if he would rather it not be, Robbie responds, "turn it off for a second." We are then left to finish the conversation only in our imaginations.

In 1978, not long before these interviews were conducted, the three remaining members of The Doors were listening to tapes recorded for the album "An American Prayer." During the listening session, Ray Manzarek recalls, a tiny bird flew in through an open window. He describes it as fluttering around the studio a bit over everyone's heads before flying out and away. According to Ray, the band looked at each other and said, "Here he is. He was here, fluttered over us, and gave us his little blessing." They had all somehow felt Jim Morrison's presence. It is undeniable that in important ways, "The Lizard King" will always be alive. The stories and music contained on "No One Here Gets Out Alive" are unarguably a significant part of that.

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated pop-influenced rock; Enchant fans take note!.......2001-12-22

Being a HUGE fan of Enchant, I'm thankful I discovered this great, great album. Xen is the side-project conceived by Enchant's virtuoso drummer Paul Craddick. He gets help from the rest of the Enchant crew: vocalist Ted Leonard (a favorite of mine), guitarist Douglas Ott, Bob Madsen on bass, and Michael Geimer does some programming. Craddick handles most of the instrumental duties, playing drums (of course) and also lots of guitars and keys. This was recorded at about the same time as Enchant's third release, Break, but it is less solemn in tone. It makes for an interesting dichotomy to put the grave Break against the peppier 84,000 Dharma Doors.

Hearing Leonard's distinctive vocals on "She Plays," my first reaction was: "Hmm, this is sorta like Enchant." However, listening more carefully you can hear that Craddick's songwriting is less elaborate than Enchant's, but still very punctilious. Craddick's drumming is awe-inspiringly meticulous, and each arrangement is rife with instrumental nuance, not unlike Enchant. Some tracks could probably easily end up as Enchant songs. I think the main difference lies not in any overall element, but a combination of smaller ones. There's a certain rugged (but not sloppy) feel to some songs -- sort of an alternative influence, I think. This helps certain tracks rock harder. Sometimes the writing is more eccentric than what one would expect from Enchant. The vocals are also pretty quirky at times, unlike Enchant. The quick, sharply enunciated verses of "Prettyzntenuf" are quite unlike Enchant's vocal melodies, which flow like effulgent water. "Psychedelia" has some really cool vocal lines, like the rapid-fire phrasing of the second verse and some pseudo-rhythmic vocals on the bridge. Craddick, however, never loses sight of catchy melodies, which Xen has in abundance. Great vocal melodies (those choruses!) are found here by the ream.

Yes indeed...melodies. Although Xen's music certainly rocks, it remains invariably melodic because of an evident pop influence. It's actually pretty original stuff. This is original stuff. I've never heard things like the dynamic "Psychedelia" or the liquidy melodies of "Birthright." Even when the originality goes over my head, the songs stand out simply on a basis of their songwriting quality and their production quality. "She Plays" is a great opener with tight riffing during the verses and a deadly, pleading hook in the chorus. "Find a Way"'s elating lyric is presented in such a surreally likable way musically that it gains a good deal of inspirational strength. "Existentialist" is a slow, simple song, with acoustic guitar, keys, piano, and voice. It stands out because of the light melody and the powerful lyrics. For a little side-project, 84,000 Dharma Doors sounds great. The mix gives lots of rocking thrust, but no instrumental ingredient goes unnoticed, and the vocals have lots of breathing room.

While Craddick wrote nearly all of the album's music, he only penned lyrics for two of the songs here. "Psychedelia" is very abstract and weird; at first I thought it was just random thoughts. Now I think it reflects on aspects of humanity. Or he might just be playing with people who look for extremely deep meanings in weird things. It makes me suspicious whenever a lyric says, "Let's get metaphysical baby." Har har, right? Then there's the line, "You're here right now, counting drops of rain." I don't know if it was intentional, but that line creates such a sad image. "Existentialist" is the other one Craddick wrote. It's a great lyric about negativity, and higher spirits prevailing over that negativity. Great stuff. Leonard's and Ott's lyrical contributions are great, as is expected given their fine, fine stuff with Enchant.

Obviously, this album wasn't promoted much, because a lot of Enchant fans don't seem to know about it (at least here in North America). I didn't find out it existed until months after I completed my Enchant collection. However, I'm extremely glad I found it. The quality is high like Enchant, but the music is different & great and justifies being a Xen album (rather than a bunch of Enchant songs). 84,000 Dharma Doors is more than just a distraction when you've worn out your Enchant catalogue. Whether you are an Enchant fan or not, buy this album!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Album!.......2001-04-19

Only about 8 months ago I started to listen to Enchant. Instantly I fell in love them. Their music just seems perfect in a way. After numerous visits to Napster I found someone who had a ton of Enchant songs so I started talking to him and he told me about this project band, Xen. Without hesitation I started downloading the music. I gave each song a couple of listens... at first it was kind of weird, it had a different touch than Enchant and not what I was really used to... but within a day it became my favorite album. To any progressive rock fan, this is a MUST BUY. Singing, song writing, the talent is unbelievable. I just wish these guys made another...

4 out of 5 stars Paul's side project is one to be reckoned with........2001-01-10

It's shame that fans of Enchant don't know about this album because it's one heck of a disc. Recorded at the same time as Enchant's "Break," this album shows the guys from Enchant stretching out a little. Tracks like "She Plays," "Red Letter Day" and "Middle Ground" are tracks that could be on "Break" pretty easily and some of the other tracks - "Prettyznenuf, "Birthright" and "Existentialist" - shows Paul branching out musically as well as lyrically (check out the very introspective lyrics on "Existentialist"). For Enchant fans, this is a MUST have.

Xen "48000 Dharma Doors" is considered a solo effort by Paul Craddick of Enchant. What you get on this CD is pretty much what you can expect from Enchant. The line up is the same as the Enchant CDs and the sound is also pretty close. Song writing is good to say the least and performance is what we've come to expect from Enchant. A definite must for the Enchant and progressive rock fan in general.

These are the three medal winners in the 1977 Cliburn International Competition, in live performances from the competition. Steven De Groote is better represented in the previous volume of the series, which he has all to himself. Here he plays Bartók with too much percussion, but at least shows he could bang with the best of them; his Chopin, though, shows great artistry. Alexander Toradze plows his way through the noisy Liszt Variations, but then gives a truly amazing performance of the Stravinsky showpiece, both technically and musically superb and worth the price of the disc on its own. Jeffrey Swann's Schumann is fine, but not memorable. The sound quality of the disc is excellent, the documentation scanty, and the title of the Liszt is severely mangled. --Leslie Gerber

Jerome Lowenthal is an underrated American pianist and Bartók player. He has long deserved the opportunity to make a recording like this, and he makes the most of it. His Out of Doors is one of the most devastatingly powerful versions of that masterpiece ever recorded, and he powers his way through the Études with tremendous elan. The Bagatelles and Mikrokosmos selections are all sharply characterized and capture the Hungarian folk flavor. The recorded sound conveys the pianist's tonal color and range very well. In fact, everything about this recording is excellent; too bad there isn't more of it, but better 56 minutes of excellence than 80 minutes of mediocrity. -- Leslie Gerber

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars a wealth of Bartok.......2001-04-14

An amazing compendium of Bartok piano works. Lowenthal gives a truly virtuoso playing here that left me sitting in the middle of the room just listening (unlike me). I love the performance on this in part because it really helped me to have a greater appreciation of Bartok and the subtleties and beauty of his music. On lesser recordings you miss out on how amazing his music can be.
