Editorial Reviews
Opera News
These extended excerpts from La Traviata and Louise, taped live in New Orleans, are far more than glimpses of the soprano for curious new listeners; they are completely satisfying, thoughtful assumptions of these characters.

5 out of 5 stars Cheaper recording available.......2004-05-11

This is a great recording, but there is a Living Stage recording of a live performance from the Metropolitan available on amazon's other English-language website that is cheaper than this one. It also has Dorothy Kirsten as Cio-cio San and the conductor is Mitropoulos.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tribute to Kirsten!.......2004-04-02

This performance, from New Orleans March, 1960, is a true testament to one of the greatest sopranos to ever sing at the Metopolitan. There are so few recordings of Kirsten in opera, except for the private Met tapes, that this release is an incredible joy. Dorothy still holds the record for most consecutive seasons at the Met -- 30 years!!

First of all the incredible STEREO sound, which is crystal clear from beginning to end. Kirsten was one of the greatest in this role, and you will find this a more than ample substitute for a studio recording. This performance is even better than the Met '58 lps, conducted by Mitropoulous, also with Kirsten and Barioni in the title roles.

Kirsten and Barioni are superb and at their peak in this recording, which I cannot believe has not been reviewed until now. It's a must have, despite the price tag........it is well worth every cent. The conducting, sound, performances are all top notch, and it will be a most welcome addition to any opera collection, especially since Kirsten recordings are so rare.

Beautiful and informative liner notes complete this incredible package, and thanks to VAI audio for putting this release out for us all to enjoy. Highly recommended!!!
