Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars as splendid a set as I ever hope to find.......2001-03-29

These were my first CDs from this label and they constitute one of the most beautifully produced sets I have encountered. To the reviewer whose advice I took: yes I would have regretted missing this one, for it is one of the finest tributes to a performing artist imaginable. The booklet is a hard read, but you won't care about any opinions expressed after you hear the recordings. That is why you will want this set: for the heart and soul of the music that Ignaz Friedman conveyed and is nowhere near as easy to come by in modern recordings.

5 out of 5 stars The Dynamite of the Piano.......2001-03-20

Ignaz Friedman has a truly EXPLOSIVE style of playing the piano that is simply fabulous. Horowitz once said that Friedman's recording of the Chopin Etude Op 10 no.7 in C major is "Unsurpassed" and i kinda find it hard to disagree. Also listen to the "trio" nocturne which has a highly unique and original interpretation. "La Campanella" is fascinating, and it would take me years and years and years to list out all the stuff i like from this CD. BUY IT NOW, OR REGRET IT!!! And the booklet is great too! i had a great time reading it. WORTH EVERY SINGLE CENT OF YOUR MONEY.

5 out of 5 stars A Pianistic Giant.......1999-01-02

That all recorded evidence of Ignaz Friedman mastery can go into 4 CDs is pretty sad but it is also one more reason for not missing the little we are fortunate to have.

The greatest, in my opinion, among Leschetizky's disciples, Ignaz Friedman had a splendid technique (which reminds altenatively Rosenthal and Hofmann), a sonority of his own, a unique rhythmical sense, enlightened especially in the performance of the Mazurkas -- still considered by many to be the best ever recorded.

Also a competitor for the same superlative status is the Nocturne in E Flat Major opus 55 no.2, performed with unbelievable beauty of sound, of phrasing and with enormous evocative power...

All the other items on this set -- beautifully transferred by Ward Marston and interestingly commented by Allan Evans -- are sheer gems of Romantic piano playing. Do not miss it!

While much attention has recently been paid to composers who lost their lives in the Holocaust, those who survived but lost their careers have gone virtually unnoticed. One of these was Franz Mittler (1893-1970), highly regarded in his native Austria as the composer of over 200 works, primarily songs. In America, where he emigrated in 1938, he became known mainly for his arrangements and pleasant teaching materials, and for his collaboration with three other European musicians in the First Piano Quartet. In Vienna, he was considered one of the foremost vocal accompanists and chamber music player; his most unusual partner was the poet, writer, critic and monologist Karl Kraus, many of whose poems he set to music. Kraus was famous for his solo readings of Nestroy's comedies and Offenbach's operettas, but since he could neither sing nor read notes, Mittler, hidden behind a screen, provided the music. This record includes two instrumental works in addition to the songs. Of the Piano Pieces (1926), the first is somewhat Schumannesque, the second humorous, and the third is a brilliant imitation of a child's mechanical clock, complete with winding up and running down. The piano writing is splendid, as is the performance by Mittler's daughter Diana. The Piano Trio (1912) frankly acknowledges all the influences that formed the 19-year-old composer; romantically expressive, it is written straight from the heart. Mittler's many-faceted stylistic originality shows most clearly in his songs, especially in his ability to capture and underline the poetry's contrasting character, mood and texture, from tender, morose, ironic, to Viennese "pop", with lyrical and jagged vocal lines and surprisingly dissonant and impressionist harmonies. This record should help re-discover an unjustly neglected composer, abetted by the persuasive advocacy of Holzmair and Ryan; their wonderfully idiomatic performance brings out every verbal and musical nuance, from the trenchant Kraus settings to Rilke's hauntingly beautiful, simple "Folksong." --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars He'll delight and annoy you!.......2003-02-14

This is the second in an ongoing series of Friedman recordings; I missed the first one. Friedman can be a maddening pianist. His impulsive style of playing can be off-putting, but it can also be incredibly exciting. And one is never in doubt about his ability to get exactly the effect he is after; he was a master technician. All of the performances date from the late 1920s and are early electrical recordings.

This CD contains his only extant concerto recording - a merely OK performance of the Grieg with an unidentified French orchestra conducted by Philippe Gaubert. The second movement is both more limpid and dramatic than most other versions. He also recorded the Beethoven 'Emperor' with Henry Wood, but that was never issued and probably no longer exists, alas.

Some impressions: The 'Moonlight' Sonata appears _without_ its famous first movement. The second movement is simply wayward, with odd agogic accents and a mixture of staccato and legato. But the Presto is a windstorm and quite effective. The Chopin B-flat minor sonata is missing its first two movements. The sonata's funeral march is faster than usual but effective. The last movement, usually 'the wind whispering over a graveyard,' is more of a gale; it's exciting and I kept thinking 'well, why not?'

The A-flat Polonaise of Chopin is one of the most exciting I know and those impossibly fleet left-hand octave scales are simply amazing. Whew!

There is no question Ignaz Friedman was a force of nature and for those of us who love getting to know pianists from the so-called Golden Age, he's indispensible.

As always the recorded sound is about as good as it can get with recordings that are more than seventy years old. Ward Marston, that miracle of a producer, gets enormous credit for the work he keeps putting out for Naxos in their series of historical recordings. And then there's the budget price!
