Album Description

Very good for learing English Country Dance.......2002-04-22

I have been using this CD for several years to teach English Country Dance, and it is without a doubt the most played in my collection. So many other compilations have just a taste of the melody, maybe enough for one verse, or the tempos are wrong. On this CD, everything is just right. The tempos are lively, yet easy to follow. Each piece has the correct number of repetitions to complete the dance. I particularly like that the dances are arranged by the number of couples. Especially good for performances, where a 2-couple set can move seamlessly from Rufty Tufty to Hearts Ease to Argeers without skipping a beat.

An excellent collection of First Edition Playford dances........2000-06-16

This album is a must-have for any fan of English Country Dances. Every dance on the disc comes from John Playford's influential 1651 edition of the "English Dancing Master", and almost every track is perfectly dancable (I know this from personal experience). The tunes are accurate to the original, the tempos are just right to dance to, and the arrangements are interesting and different from track to track. If you want to listen to what people were dancing to 350 years ago, buy this disc.

For those who don't like the dance music they hear on radio stations these days, Praetorius's Terpsichore is a monument. This Renaissance master compiled more than 300 dances into a 17th century equivalent of the "fake book" musicians now carry with them to weddings and bar mitzvahs. Nearly any collection from Terpsichore is bound to be entertaining as long as the musicians play the right instruments and keep the rhythms lively, as they do here. Arabesque could have gotten a lot more of these dances onto this CD, a reissue of a not very generous (but digitally recorded) LP. What's here, though, is lots of fun. --Leslie Gerber

Martial Music from the Age of Reason.......2006-07-16

This is a fine collection of less well known fife and drum music. The playing is superb. The Middlesex County Volunteers represent the collective genius and enthusiam of all the Colonial period re-enactors in this area of music. Although we have the standard "Yankee Doodle" here and there, its interspaced with many fine and certainly not very well known pieces from German and French sources of the period. The fifes have a stronger, fuller quality as noted by one of the reviewers above which gives them a better quality from the standard we normally hear in this regard. MCV has developed what is normally just limited Field Music into a wide ranging tonal sound. These guys also have smart uniforms and no doubt put on a great marching display. Look for them at the Edinburgh Tattoo very soon. With US military bands limited now because of service requirements groups like this will have a greater role to play for local and International Military Tattoos. They can certainly represent the USA every bit as well as the Old Guard Fife and Drum in DC. I look forward to seeing more from the MCV.

Great CD!.......2002-05-17

This is another great CD from Middlesesx County Volunteers Fifes and Drums. It has a good varity of songs with some great harmonies. This corps uses 10 hole fifes, so the sound is a lot nicer than with the 6 hole fife.

A Delight to Listen!.......2001-07-31

This ensemble's playing is very graceful and elegant. It certainly does give a flavor of the kind of music that was played during 18th century battles, military marches, and training exercises. Perhaps this was the music George Washington's troops heard playing when they were marching into battle.
