Stanford (1852-1924), along with Parry, form the first stage of the three-stage rocket of British Romanticism. They taught Vaughan Williams's generation. Stanford based nearly all his music on indigenous folk music themes, but still tended to be more classically expressed. His Piano Concerto 2 (1911) is a direct homage to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto 2, which Stanford had also conducted. His Concert Variations upon an English Theme (Down Among the Dead Men), of 1898, is a more youthful work, a series of variations on an ancient theme from William Chappell's Popular Music of Olden Time. Dynamic and engaging--a Chandos gem. --Paul Cook

3 out of 5 stars Unknown English works for piano and orchestra worth a listen.......1999-01-28

This album was my first exposure to the works of Stanford, and I must admit that the Piano Concerto #2 was fun to listen to. Since then, I have grown fond of this work. Oh, it will remind you of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (it's even in the same key of c-minor), but Stanford spins some lovely and original tunes and wraps them in rich orchestral fabric. The Variations go a bit too long for my taste, but a few of the variations and simply beautiful. If you are interested in Stanford, but don't want to be introducted by way of piano, I strongly suggest one of the available recordings of his excellent Clarinet Concerto, the only Romantic work of its kind for the clarinet.
