What a great line-up of singers on this disc! Although Campions' songs are written as solo songs he stated at the time that they may also be enjoyed as part songs. On this CD they are tastefully mixed both vocally and instrumentally. There are trios with soprano, tenor, baritone and lute where the lute is treated almost like another voice part. Each of the singers has a solo or two and Chance has several. It is also good to keep in mind that Thomas Campion (l567-l620) was a poet as well as a musician who had the capability of putting together the two art forms, words and music. As he says, "lovingly coupled together." From over 100 songs it was difficult to select only 25, but Campion helped us by placing his prize songs often at the beginning of a volume. And it is certainly appropriate to present these chosen songs with varied vocal combinations. My favorites are the last three on the album: "The Sypres curten of the night is spread" (Michael Chance); "Author of Light" (quartet:(Elliott-soprano;Chance-countertenor;Padmore-tenor;Harvey -baritone) and "Never weather-beaten Saile" (Chance).

Compelling organ literature for the whole liturgical year.......2001-06-14

With any pipeorgan recording, it is not merely the instrument but also the space which sings. You can't miss the rolling 32' rumble at the final chord of the Dupre toccata for the Feast of the Presentation. The full resources of this sizeable Moller and the huge building which houses it are taken full advantage of in this collection of 20th century compositions based on familiar hymn and Gregorian chant tunes. The avant-garde "Fanfares to the Tongues of Fire" piece based on the Veni Creator chant tune demands a fiery en chamade stop. One cannot miss the Pontifical Trumpet as it quickly dispatches the requirement for a "big enchilada" trumpet.

With 325 Ranks and 20,142 pipes at his dispossal, Scott Dettra takes beautiful advantage of the West Point organ located in the Cadet Chapel at the United States Military Academy. Walking into such a venue in silence makes one ponder at the greatness of such a machine and a view of the consol stirs the imaginiation whilst you envision the performer that must drive this instruments. Listening to this CD is the most appropriate way to verify these thoughts. Even listening to the first piece, Bach's "Piece d'Orgue, BWV 572" makes you wonder how the stained glass of the chapel can hold up to such majesty. But it's not all about the organ, and it is not all about the composers. Scott Dettra brings the venue and music to life in a way that only true musicianship allows. Scott has had an advantage of growing up with this organ at his disposal. But the advantage is not merely mechanical. The true advantage is that Mr. Dettra is a superb musician and this is a superb recording.
