I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

In a star-filled constellation of piano virtuosos Hamelin shines brightly; it seems he can play virtually anything in the core repertory or on its fringes with consummate skill and artistry. That's certainly the case in this live Brahms' Second Concerto, a massive work demanding both virtuosity and poetic sensibility. Hamelin amply demonstrates the former, especially in the finger-busting first movement where he adopts the necessary grand manner while providing filigreed details in abundance. In the long slow movement, he maintains a seamless flow of legato pianism and makes it sound as spontaneous as if he were improvising at the keyboard. Andrew Litton and the Dallas Symphony are a big part of the recording's success too, responsive to the "Brahmsian" ensemble sound while the first-desk solos are done to perfection. The disc also features Hamelin in Brahms' Opus 119 solo pieces, three radiantly played lyric Intermezzos, and a muscular Rhapsody, all done with rhythmic life. Brahmsians will retain their affection for such giants as Arrau, Serkin, and Gilels, but Hamelin's CD belongs in their collections too. --Dan Davis

I confess to being a Hamelin fanatic! To me, Marc-Andre Hamelin is the best pianist performing today and I anxiously await new recordings by him. The Brahms is one of the greatest concertos ever written and it's one of my favorites. Hamelin plays it supperbly and the orchestra, under Litton's leadership, provides exceptional support. This is a "must have" CD for anyone who loves great piano playing. The Hyperion sound is fabulous, as usual too.

This recording of the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 is my first experience with this piece and I think it's an absolutely wonderful. Hamelin, whom a lot feel plays stiff and mechanically, plays with surprising musicality and fluidity.

    I actually like this performance a lot more than I thought I would, especially the last two movements which I don't think I've heard done better, from the dozen or so recordings I have. I like the fast tempo for the Andante (not an Adagio) and Hamelin plays very well here, impulsive yet rapt and improvisatory. The lighter touch for the finale also works very well, and this also has a capricious, improvisatory feel which suits the music ideally.

    The first two movements are also good, but not quite at the same level. My benchmark has been Pollini's mid-70s recording for drive and sweep and Hamelin can't quite match Pollini for keyboard control (not that he may have been trying to).

    The concerto generally sounds very fresh and although this might not replace your favourite recording (whichever of the many great ones that is) this does offer something new.

    The sound in stereo via my Stax earspeaker system was very clear and detailed but with plenty of warmth - when I listened earlier via speakers I perhaps felt the piano was given a tad too much prominence, but I don't think that on revised listening. Recommended.

        I heard the music on this CD in a music class and I think it is completely amazing. I am not into classical AT ALL, but I have had a change of mind after listening to this disc. I now enjoy more classical pieces and am exploring different composers with the help of Amazon.com!!

          This set is a remarkable bargain, containing all of Brahms's solo piano music, including such chips from his workshop as cadenzas for other composers' concertos and a series of strictly mechanical piano studies that nobody will want to listen through. No matter. Idil Biret has a firm grasp of Brahms's idiom, and she plays with insight and passion throughout the set. Although she doesn't startle with her virtuosity, she handles the considerable technical demands of the music with great confidence. The orchestra and conductor make strong contributions on their two discs. The set comes with a fat booklet telling you nearly everything you'll want to know about the music. Too bad the individual variations in sets aren't tracked, but it's hard to think of another complaint about this monumental achievement, a startlingly reasonable way of getting to know Brahms better. --Leslie Gerber

          Referring back to my previous, extensive review (May 11, 2007) on Ms Biret's complete Chopin Piano Music survey, most of the problems described can be found also in her complete Brahms survey. The good news is that Brahms's music better can cope with Biret's weird pianism; the chief reason being the greater structural strictness of Brahms's music relative to that of Chopin. Still, her 'over-liberal' (or erratically exaggerated more accurately labeled) playing in terms of tempo, rubato and pedaling is disturbing throughout the set. Furthermore, her technique is better suited to Brahms than Chopin--even though its limitations become rather obvious in the, indeed fiendish, Paganini Variations.

          Nevertheless, this set can actually be recommended as a decent alternative for those who desire the complete piano works of Brahms (because complete it is indeed!). One cannot be too picky here as the competition is markedly limited: Mr Jones's Brahms survey on Nimbus may offer more idiomatic interpretations, but is unfortunately severely marred by innumerous miss-hits that are too disturbing for pleasant repeated listening. A better recommendation, then, is Mr Oppitz (also playing a Bösendorfer--see below) on RCA (originally Eurodisc), although quite far from being masterful. One is better off collecting bits and pieces from Alexeev (EMI--nla) and Kovacevich (Philips). I would specifically like to recommend Grimaud's beautiful survey of the Opp 116-119 pieces (Erato).

          Lastly, the piano sound is basically the same as in the Chopin set--a Bösendorfer captured with a highly metallic, fabricated quality. Even if Biret's playing is decent--seldom better or worse--the two stars are chiefly awarded for the good collection value of this bargain-priced box set.

          Having the complete works of such at a times dense piano composer as Brahms is perhaps not the best way to go, but with Mrs. Biret at the piano, and at Naxos prices, is a wise decision. You are able to know the composer in a deep way.

          Most of the performance are excellent, and you will not find one that is below average. The recording is very good and with ample sonic space.

          I have heard it twice already, and allowed me to explore Brahms.
