Amazon.com essential recording
This seminal disc now almost seems like the manifesto for a whole new strain of minimalism that has found an enormously receptive audience. It represented a breakthrough for Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, whose music--like that of his European colleagues John Tavener and Henryk Górecki--pursues an austerely beautiful simplicity that suggests spiritual illumination. Fratres, given here in two versions, one for piano and violin and the other for 12 cellos, repeatedly intones a sequence resembling chant to convey a sensibility that seems at once archaic and beyond time. Violinist Gidon Kremer, for whom Pärt wrote the exquisitely contemplative and hypnotic title work, grasps the music's koan-like idiom, allowing an inner fullness to resonate through the most fragile, ethereal wisps of tone against the mysterious clangings of prepared piano. The tolling of the tubular bells in Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten is an emotionally charged lament, based on a simple minor descending scale, that introduces Pärt's fascination with what he calls "tintinnabulation": the literal and metaphorical sound of ringing bells. This recording is also famous for the acoustically warm presence produced by ECM's Manfred Eicher, which magnificently captures the mystical simplicity of Pärt's sound world. --Thomas May

music so good you'll cry.......2007-04-21
I first heard one of the songs playing in a Starbucks and had to ask them what it was... I couldn't hear it very well, but I knew I needed to hear more. After I got home and listened to the previews on Amazon, I was hooked.
There is so much depth and sweetness to this music. It has literally brought me to tears. If you're looking for an album of chamber music that truely goes beyond the normal lulling sound and into the realm of true artistic expression, this is one to own. It is one of the prizes of my collection.
This is one for everybody.......2006-08-30
I'm not completely dug on classical and contemporanean music, ECM stuff included. Lygeti, Xenakis they make me sense, all along american minimalists like Reich or Cage. Electro-acustic is more ear-friendly for me (Ferrari, Parmegiani) but... All this speech just to say that thsi is one ECM record I own - the 1977's Tabula Rasa. The great Gidon Kramer (check out "Silence" from Nonesuch who has another version of tabula rasa) is here with all his magic, even the world-piano-star K. Jarrett plays piano, and everything makes sense. The music is so cold and complex, ethernal yet listenable for the common of mortals. Give a try, i did and i'm inloved with.
should be accepted by any rational person as strong evidence for God's existence........2006-06-20
arguably, it was THIS music by THIS composer that Manfred Eicher's label, ECM, was meant for. If an album was released on ECM, no doubt it sounds lovely, but when purpose is paired so perfectly with sound, even ECM attains something angelic and beyond. Arvo Part's non-modulating approach to harmony, great care and attention with so few notes, and the reverent spirit that carries through his efforts encompasses a catalogue of works so great and beautiful I'm not sure any 20th century composer can remotely compare.
This ECM disc is possibly the best of all. _Tabula Rasa_, first and foremost, is a masterpiece. A violin concerto of sorts, it flows through static haze and torrid whorls, with ghostly sounds of strings punctuated by the bell- and chime-like intonations on sounds of prepared piano. Divine and without momentum, this piece forever hovers between being and nothing. _Fratres_, performed in two versions here (for violin and piano, and for 12 cellos), features a chorale-like figure recurring over an ethereal drone. Radiant and simple, not a sound is out of place. the _Cantus_ is based on rich chords arranged in a variety of rhythmic patterns, so beautiful one kind of wishes it would last longer.
this is an excellent introduction to one of the best composers of the 20th century. i would really encourage you to hear this.
Fill in your blank slate with some innovative music..........2006-01-03
This CD started it all. In 1984 it introduced the then little known Arvo Pärt to a new western audience. Pärt had long before made his "tinntinnabulation" discovery (around 1976). Before this pivotal epiphany, the majority of Pärt's work fell into the serialist category. His early work shows all of the grinding atonal experimentation of the 1950s. It thus lies in stark contrast to his later work as presented on this CD (he shares this same evolutionary path with the Polish composer Górecki).
"Tabula Rasa" introduced a new music and a new style to the west. This music doesn't follow traditional harmonic or melodic forms. Listening to Pärt differs from listening to Sibelius or Stravinski. In Pärt, environment and setting are everything. The melodies and harmonies function to set a mood rather than to follow a path or a harmonic progression leading to an ultimate resolution. Subsequently, one experiences rather than listens to Pärt's work. The notes merely provide the structure. In this way Pärt's pieces represent frameworks for music (which probably explains, as related in the CD booklet, why the members of one orchestra asked "where is the music" upon seeing the score for "Tabula Rasa"). So Pärt not only presents beautiful and moving music but also helps listeners conceive of it in new ways.
The tracks on this CD provide the perfect showcase for Pärt's work. Beginners should start here. Two versions of the meditative "Fratres" appear, but each utilize such different arrangements that they sound like two separate works. "Cantus" remains one of Pärt's most moving compositions. It sounds like a slowly exploding wall of catharsis. The nearly half hour "Tabula Rasa" features incredible violin work and prepared piano (a la Cage). Overall, the mood of each piece on this CD veers strongly toward the meditative, mystical, and ethereal. As such it serves as a great introduction to the "late" Pärt and as a showcase of incredible musicianship.
Pärt remains more of a phenomenon on CD than in the concert hall. The lush rich sound of this CD, which will have your cochleas swimming, provides some evidence as to why. Not only that, the amount of quietude and silence utilized by Pärt must create difficulties for orchestra hall performance. Pärt's music, intimate and close, probably plays best in seclusion or in small venues. For the maximum experience, put on some headphones and listen to this CD. In this way listeners can experience all the subtle harmonics and nuances that make up the music of Arvo Pärt.
Modern classical music that is beautiful.......2005-10-23
Too many modern classical composers have sacrificed beauty for virtuosity and expermintality. Not so Part. This Baltic composer writes melodic music of outstanding lyricism and profound beauty. He has succesfully managed to write in the classical format while not sounding like a repetition of the great artists of yore. The music is melancolic, but not tragic, pensive but not unpenetratable. I had the great honour to listen to a live perfomance of works by Part by the Hilliard Ensamble at the Royal Festival Hall in London, UK. It was one of the few times I know of that the audience gave a standing ovation, and just did not want to stop. Mr Part was present and he almost started crying.
Part has contributed music to films as diverse as Les Amants du Pont-Neuf and Fahrenheit 9/11.

the wonderful composer Alan Hovhaness.
No matter what your favorite style is,
this music you will fine it to be divine,
spiritual.The sonata for the unusual
combination of harp and guitar,"The
Spirit of Trees" was composed in 1983
and is here recorded for the first time.
Unique about this Cd is that money from
sales will help protect the enviroment
worldwide...Unique music, wonderful performances
great price, peak quality sound, and a
noble cause....
Outstanding!.......2001-07-30
An outstanding and important collection of Hovhaness' music. Performed flawlessly on harp, the music is emotionally powerful. The orchestra is wonderful, making this "modern" music both lush and beautiful. This music shines out above all the ugly music of the late 20th century; Hovhaness is one of the best composers we had.
Peaceful, Meditative Music.......2000-07-18
Alan Hovhaness (who incidentially passed away just a few weeks ago as of this writing) is somewhat obscure, but I believe that he will someday be recognized as one of the twentieth century's greatest composers. Forsaking the atonalism that dominated his era, Hovhaness drew his inspiriation from an eclectic mix of ethnic influences, and from the world of nature.
While hardly "typical" of his work, this album of harp-based music displays the Hovhaness stamp in terms of organization, structure, etc. (his style, once identified, is instantly recognizable). It's the instrumentation that makes this unique. Yolanda Kondonassis is marvelous performer who obviously holds a great deal of affection for this music.
One would expect harp music to be quiet, etherial and evocative; this recording does not disappoint. It creates a mood of quiet and mystery, suggesting images of misty forests and far-off shores, but with a depth that lifts it beyond mere new-age noodling and into the classical tradition.
At first listen, this album appears to be "background music", the kind you'd expect to hear playing in a shop of some sort. But upon closer inspection, Hovhaness' unique style and gift for counterpoint is revealed, and the music is seen for what it is: The work of a masterful composer.

Great Trumpet Music From Great Composers.......2001-10-01
This CD was great! It has all sorts of cheerful, skilled trumpeting. It has everything from "Flight of the Bumblebee" to "Carnival of Venice" to "Badinerie." My personal favorite is "Carnival of Venice." I also, however, enjoy "Flight of the Bumblebee", "Badinerie," and "Allegro(the second one)." The trumpeting is very nice, and even SOUNDS challenging. The tone quality is perfect, with no static or mistakes in the CD. All in all, I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes trumpet music, anyone who likes good music, or just anyone who likes music.

Mesmerizing.......2006-05-11
OK, the people who made this album are officially crazy. Nine tracks, and six of them are different arrangements of Fratres! But it's a good crazy. The piece is fascinating and very evocative and draws you in. So, believe it or not, it works.
Once I had it playing while I was working on something else. Fifteen minutes after the CD ended I realized that there was no more music, although in some mysterious and enchanting way I continued to hear it in the air.
Amazingly subtle variety.......2001-12-19
Arvo Part is one of the only composers (if not the only one) I can think of where a CD containing six versions (albeit with different instrumentation) of the same piece is not boring or pretentious.
In addition to "Fratres" six times, we are treated to three other pieces as well. (I will comment more on them later.)
"Fratres" the obvious centerpiece of this album is a piece that roughly runs about 10 minutes and is incredibly rich in material as to score it for a plethora of different instruments is refreshing instead of frustrating. The various combinations offered here are for: 1. strings & percussion; 2. violin, strings & percussion; 3. wind octet & percussion; 4. eight cellos; 5. string quartet; 6. cello and piano.
I like the producers choice to put versions one and two next to each other (with the only difference being the "solo" violinist.) You can tell how much that one instrument's line really changes up the piece. Additionally that soloist uses a lot of pizzacato and it reinvigorates the piece. The version for wind octet is probably the most bizarre of all. It sounds like it uses strings and an organ. A testament both to Part's writing and the performers skills. The version for eight cellos is quite rich, showing once agains Part's compositional prowess, but also showing the great range of the cello (its my favorite instrument in the western orchestra.) The version for string quartet is the least compelling of bunch in my opinion. Not because Part can't write for quartet, but this piece just calls for more. The version for cello and piano is a nice way to close out the record, its probably my favorite version of all.
In addition to "Fratres" we are treated to "Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten" which is beautiful...a fitting tribute to a brilliant composer (I'm told Part was quite fond of his music.) If this doesn't bring tears to your eyes...I don't know what will. This piece (more than "Fratres") is what people expect more from Part, the somber, yet joyous and ethereal tones with bells pealing. Its what the Eastern Orthodox describe as "joyful sadness."
"Summa" is just gorgeous, that's the best I can give you ;)
"Festina Lente" is a dramatic piece with swells of contrasting emotion that some movie maker will eventually steal turning Arvo Part onto millions of unsuspecting people.
Although this album is geared towards "Fratres," Part's "Silouan's Song" would have been a nice inclusion here as well.
I wouldn't recommend this as the starting spot for Part's music, but its still a fine listen. (To start with Part, I would recommend "Litany" "Miserere" or "Symphony no. 3")
Sublime.......2001-05-16
I just got this CD in search of the "Fratres for wind octet and percussion." I was braced for some trying repetition, even though the recording also includes my very first Part piece, "Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten," and two others, "Summa" and "Festina Lente."
I was wrong. The 79-minute recording is sublime. I was constantly taken by surprise in the different realizations of the basic "Fratres" materials. The "Cantus," "Summa" and "Festina Lente" were added, not to break up the monotony, but to enhance the variety of the CD.
This CD will now join the precious few I listen to when life simply ceases to make sense and I am in desperate need for centering and grounding. (The recording of mystic minimalist works by the Chilingirian String Quartet is one of them. The achingly slow late Bernstein recording of the Barber "Adagio for Strings" is another.)
Superb.......2000-09-19
Composer Arvo Part is problably the most compelling composer of the last decade, and the "Fratres" count as one of his best works. They are not for every listener, though, as their slow pace and repetitive patterns (rendered even more repetitive by the fact that they appear ten times here in different versions) set a very particular mood. Werthen's interpretation emphasises the solemn and sometimes "marble cold" aspect of one of Part's most minimalist work (although he may not be considered a minimalist himself). Someone whishing to introduce himself to Part's compositions may prefer to try the ECM New Series recording of "Tabula Rasa", which also contains two "Fratres" (played by Keith Jarrett) along with the "Cantus in Memoriam", and another major work (the title work).
Quite Simply..............2000-01-15

Customer Reviews:
My favorite Vivaldi Liturgical Music.......2007-06-08
This relatively short CD (52 minutes) actually has five different works, four short pieces before we get the title Mass of 9 movements. The music is simply divine, and remarkably modern sounding, although to my ear this is probably because it bears a strong resemblence to the opening of Procol Harum's song 'A Salty Dog'. This is not surprising, because PH songwriters Brooker and Reid were often known to crib some tunes from the classics. A thoroughly enjoyable disc all the way around.
The best Vivaldi Stabat Mater currently available.......2007-03-20
I write this review some years after first hearing this recording and after hearing a number of more recent recordings by other countertenors.
I was brought up on the James Bowman / Academy of Ancient Music recording made in the 1970s under the direction of Christopher Hogwood. That recording is still my lifelong favourite. However, it is clear to me that Andreas Scholl has presented us with probably the best Vivaldi "Stabat Mater" recording to date. I like Robin Blaze's recording very much and Michael Chance has also recorded a very satisfying "Stabat Mater". I listened to David Daniels' recording on headphones in a shop and it was patently obvious to me that his recording was ridden with vibrato and he seemed unable to get away from a frankly operatic approach to this great work. I tolerate David Daniels' vibrato in Baroque operatic music, only because he has such a great voice, but he was out of his depth in this piece of sacred music.
Andreas Scholl's voice is very smooth and his range is well integrated. His timbre, at the time of recording this work, resembled that of his teacher, René Jacobs - sort of like a Rolls Royce version René Jacobs' voice without the peculiarities, occasional "uglinesses" and "ungainlinesses" of that voice. Scholl's voice is probably a perfect countertenor voice - rich, distinctive, powerful and expressive. Andreas Scholl's experience in singing 17th and 18th century sacred music is far greater than any of his peers, save, perhaps, Michael Chance or Robin Blaze.
This entire disc is exceptionally good. The cantata shows how Herr Scholl can negotiate with ease the most florid music with ease and style.
I had the great pleasure of seeing and hearing Andreas Scholl sing the Stabat Mater and other works of Vivaldi in the Adelaide Town Hall several years ago. It was a marvellous experience and I can report that Herr Scholl has a big voice and very powerful ability to mesmerise an audience through his deep, expressive and intelligent interpretations of the music he sings. Only James Bowman's singing of the same music in the same venue in 1975 was as potent and moving for me in my memories.
Fireworks and sacred pathos.......2000-10-09
Almost everything Ensemble 415 records is worth buying. With Andreas Scholl as soloist, this must be the star in their crown to date.
The secular cantata Cessate, omai Cessate is a real bonus. It's said to be "popluar" although personally I cannot remember having seen it advertised in live performance, ever. It's a flashy show-off piece for countertenor, and Andreas Scholl has plenty to show off. You won't hear vocal fireworks like this very often. First time hearing it will take your breath away ... make your hair stand on end.
The intro to the Stabat Mater - in full, not abbreviated as in some recordings - is the sacred mood music Filae Maestae Jerusalem. This piece brings the house down whenever it is performed live, too rarely, and Scholl gives it incredible depth. The steady, ominous rhythm is fabulously rendered by Chiara Banchini.
The Stabat Mater itself continually builds and falls away again as the insights of the writer of the original poem are successively laid before us. Andreas Scholl gives each stanza its own full impact but never loses the flow of the narrative. The last sections, in which the witness (of the Mother's agony at her Son's execution) turns from spectator to pray-er, are a miracle of sensitivity and expression. Andreas Scholl is a master.
A Vivaldi to nourish the soul.........2000-06-10
This is without doubt an amazing dics!
Vivaldi's setting of the Stabat Mater is simple yet profoundly moving and life enriching.. personally, I found it touched me more than Pergolesi's beautiful version. Coupled with a secular cantata (Cessate omai cessate), and several other instrumental works, it is not hard to see why Vivaldi's music has stood the test of time.
Scholl by far, has proven himself a true and most gifted artist. With a honey-toned voice, he weaves for us a delightful canvas of sound (notably in the arias of 'Cessate' track 5 and 7 and the Stabat Mater), and the ease of his vocal techniques and abilities is quite remarkable.
The only other Stabat Mater I own is the Kowalski/Negri on Philips, and I have yet to hear the Chance/Pinnock on DG. But comparing the Scholl and Kowalski, one finds that Scholl takes the opportunity to stroll and allow the words to 'breathe', thus making it more meaningful and reflective, most notably in the adagio "Quis non posset" of the Stabat Mater. Listening to this, it is hard to argue that this is music of aching beauty and it never fails to touch the soul.
The accompaniment of Banchini & Ensemble 415 is flawless and forms a very intimate partnership with Scholl. It's good that they are given the chance to shine in the string works.
All in all, this disc is an amazing achievement and quite deservedly winner of the Gramaphone Baroque Vocal Award for 1996.
Happy Listening!
Revelatory.......1999-11-27
The critics are right: this recording is remarkable. This CD has won a Gramophone award, 4f Telerama, 10 Repertoire, and a Diapason d'Or. It has also made the list of the 50 Best Baroque Recordings (BBC Music). Listen: I'm not even a particular fan of Andreas Scholl, but this is one of my most favorite recordings (in a collection that numbers almost 1,000 CD's). Scholl is uniquely suited to the repertory such as this. His angelic voice may not always rise to the occasion in opera (although his performance in Solomon certainly challenges this assumption), but that same angelic voice is always at home in sacred music - blending calm reverence with a hint of emotion, in a manner that is both beautiful and heart-breaking. Listen to his Stabat Mater to know what I mean. Scholl's voice is also quite at home in the secular cantata Cessate Omai Cessate, a cry of unrequited love, albeit more elegaic than passionate. At the surface, this recording, featuring some of the world's most beautiful melodies, is an easy listening (is there a melody more ravishing than Larghetto from Cessate?). But the listening is also revelatory and rewarding because it leads to new layers of meaning and expression on each new listen. gkolomietz@yahoo.com

Album Description
From "Orlando" to "The Tango Lesson" and onward, director Sally Potter has always been closely involved with the soundtracks to her films--with outstanding results. This score for "Yes" is no different, as it weaves diverse music--including Philip Glass, Gustavo Santaolalla, Kronos Quartet, "Fawn" (by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan), and Eric Clapton with BB King--into both a superb tapestry for this motion picture and as a compelling listening experience on its own.
Further original music by Sally Potter was made with the participation of long-term collaborator, the celebrated guitarist, composer and improviser Fred Frith, who has played on Sally's last four films. Frith has composed for Ensemble Modern and Asko Ensemble amongst others. Best known world-wide as an improvising guitarist, he played on albums ranging from The Residents and Reni Lussier to Brian Eno and Amy Denio.
Customer Reviews:
An aural journey through diverse cultures.......2005-06-28
Quite an eclectic mix of artists and music. I am not sure this CD is for everyone...
From hypnotic instrumentals to howling blues to middle eastern influenced dances to chill dance grooves to classical piano to latin salsa, the soundtrack takes you on an aural journey through diverse cultures. I'm sure it reflects the culture clash depicted in the movie's storyline.
Listening to the sample tracks (at Barnes & Noble.com) makes me wish that I lived in a more culturally diverse area... This is the type of movie I have to watch on DVD because theaters won't risk showing independent films here.
To find the sample tracks at B&N search for "Yes" as the title, then sort the results by "date released". Since it just came out, it should be near the top of the list. Enjoy.
BTW, my 4-star rating is based only on the sample tracks I was able to hear.
