Album Description
Contralto Catherine Hammond sings 27 art and folk songs by Bach, Gluck, Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Grieg, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky, and two original songs. She is accompanied on the piano by Robert Gartside, William Merrill, and Tatyana Shrago. Contributing artists are cellist Frank Hammond, flutist Stephanie Stathos, and guitarist Gerry Putnam.

Catherine Hammond studied voice with Ruth Streeter in Boston, Bernard Diamant in Montreal, Roy Henderson in London, and Robert Gartside in Lexington, Massachusetts. She holds degrees in music from Columbia University (B.A.) and Boston University (M.A.). While at Columbia, she performed solos with the Columbia University Chorus and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. In Boston she has been a member of The Cantata Singers, the Handel and Haydn Society, and the Bowdoin Street Consort. Appearing frequently in recitals of art songs in several languages, she has also been a regular church soloist in the Boston area over the last ten years. She recently recorded Brahms’ Two Songs for Contralto, Cello, and Piano, with her brother, cellist Frank Hammond, and pianist Thomas Hightower, and a CD of hymns for vocal quartet and piano for Longyear Museum in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.

Catherine Hammond has also written numerous songs and instrumental pieces, a multi-media work based on Dostoyevsky’s "Dream of a Ridiculous Man," and a short musical for children called "Mask-erade." Two of her most recent compositions, "Alleluia!" based on Psalms 92 and 93, and a setting of "Mother ‘s Evening Prayer" by Mary Baker Eddy, are included on this CD.

The name of this album, "Intimations," derives from the word "intimate," which has as one of its meanings " belonging to or characterizing the inmost true self : indicative of one’s deepest nature" (Webster’s 3rd New International Dictionary). On hearing these songs, the listener will undoubtedly agree on the appropriateness of the title.

Intimations, Music, Various Classical, Catherine Hammond, The rich warmth of Catherine Hammond's contralto voice is heard on this varied program of art and folk songs by Bach, Gluck, Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Grieg, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, and two original songs by the singer.

5 out of 5 stars Major Finzi, indeed!.......2006-09-26

This disc has already gathered a lot of rave reviews to which I can only add my modest appraisal -a positive one- in matters of sonics and interpretive eloquence. I applaud this Naxos release, for beyond doubt it is one of the great Finzi discs. Unless the Partridge Lyrita SRCS75 is pulled out from the crypt and resurrected on cd (that's, hopefully, probable), this excellent Naxos recording will fill the bill as the finest inquiry into Wordsworth's Intimations. Missing only an ounce of limpidity as well as, admittedly, the verve of the Partridge (exemplary in terms of vocal and orchestral fluence as much as in the qualities pertaining to recorded sound), the Naxos brings together two of Finzi's greatest works in quite superb, efficient renderings that contradict the `budget price' tag affixed on its jewel case. Deservingly, conductor David Hill is taking his due place among Britain's most renown musicians. He has worked on a good deal of recordings (notably for Hyperion) in organ and choral music, including a noteworthy account of Elgar's Gerontius with the Bournemouth forces and Waynflete Singers (also on Naxos). Finzi's orchestration is followed with attention to detail; the rhythmic pulse is taut without sounding overbearing. The performance does not ignore that sort of melodic contour which is typical of the composer. The Bournemouth S.O. under Hill's astute command has `captured' the finzian mood quite well, while tenor Gilchrist's voice is magnificent. The filler, the ode `For Saint Cecilia', is very good as well and carries near demonstration-quality sound. In case I haven't made my point sufficiently clear : This album is quite a nice accomplishment.

      4 out of 5 stars A Major but Rarely-Heard Finzi Work.......2006-06-11

Much as I like the music of Gerald Finzi (1901-1956) I had never heard his largest work -- the longest at any rate, at almost forty minutes -- 'Intimations of Immortality' for tenor, chorus and orchestra. Based of course on Wordsworth's poem that sings of the instinctual freshness and sensitivity of childhood and laments its passing when one passes into adulthood, it is a heartfelt work from Finzi whose own childhood and youth were painful, lonely and tragic, and whose escape into music and literature set his course in adulthood, an attempt to keep that child's responsiveness alive in himself. Finzi set nine of the eleven stanzas of the Wordsworth poem -- VII and VIII are omitted -- with orchestral interludes between each of them, and it took him almost twenty years to complete, interrupted as it was by the horror of the Second World War. He finished it in 1950. The central theme of the poem (in IV) -- 'Whither is fled the visionary gleam? Where is it now, the glory and the dream?' -- is set to somber tones and is ultimately answered by the 'intimations of immortality' in IX and X -- 'O joy! that in our embers / is something that doth live ... in the faith that looks through death.' Clearly this is a deeply personal work for Finzi.

Tenor James Gilchrist and the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus provide appropriate musical expression for Finzi's setting of the alternately troubled, rapt or joyous discourse of Wordsworth's poem. The Bournemouth Symphony is its usual expert self under the direction of David Hill.

The CD is filled out with a performance of Finzi's setting of a 'Ceremonial Ode' by Edmund Blunden, 'For Saint Cecilia' written specifically for a celebration of St. Cecilia's Day in 1947. Although there is some enjoyable ceremonial music here, particularly in the use of Waltonian fanfare motifs, this is public and rather impersonal music that, for me, doesn't particularly warrant frequent hearing although it is expertly done here.

Wordsworth's "Intimations of Immortality" is said to be one of the great masterpieces of English poetry. Finzi's setting of it has been criticized in the UK as being inappropriate due to the "fact" that "great poetry requires no musical setting." And so, by the same argument, composers should only use less-than-great texts. Now of course many of them do just that, particularly opera composers, but the truth is that when words meet music, it's the music that matters, and Finzi's is wonderful music indeed. Granted he was only a "minor master," but in the careful setting of words his talent was pretty impressive, as this lovely disc so eloquently demonstrates. --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars Light Fare, similar to Contemporary Stage Music.......2007-03-03

As I search music catalogues for new things, I discovered this release of Gerald Finzi's 'Dies Natalis' and 'Intimations of Immortality', with some pretty well known performers, lead by John Mark Ainsley. I primarily address this review to similar searchers for unusual music. My overall impression is that these two works are cut from the same cloth as much of 20th Century theatre music, and that while it is 'prettier' than Gershwin or Weill, it is not as robust. There is nothing here which grabs one, in the same way that you are moved by pieces such as 'Summertime'(Gershwin) and 'Mahagoney'(Weill).

I am happy to have heard these pieces, and I believe the earlier reviewer who praises the performance. It's just that these are relatively lightweight pieces.

This CD, along with the piece itself, is wonderfully composed by Gerald Finzi (I am a little partial to it because I played it with the UC Santa Cruz orchestra just recently) The choral arrangements prove to be enticing while singing in English.

I didn't look close enough at the track list before buying this. I was very excited to see a soundtrack of the BBC versions of The Chronicles of Narnia, since I love the music in them (not to mention the movies in general). Unfortunately, the Narnia music is only the first 7 tracks.

The whole CD has great music, and I think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't been expecting the whole thing to be Narnia. A lot of the other music on it reminds me of Sherlock Holmes music. It is a great CD, and I definitely recommend it...but don't expect a full CD of Narnia music.

I never get tired of hearing this narnia music over and over again. Mr. Burgon really captures the heart and soul of Narnia through his music. In opinion, it easily surpasses the new film music at times (both Tumnus themes are very good).

I did not care for all the choral (enya-like) music from the new film, and this music has none of that.

        Album Description

A set of three meditations by Ustad Shahid Parvez, invoking thre Calm, Beauty, Passion and Power of the Divine Mother. Played from a state of deep inwardness, these pieces are an attempt to manifest glimpses of the dazzling perfection of the Divine Creative Consciousness, Shakti, reaveling Herself through the receptive and perfect instrumentation of the artist. Dedicated to the higher evolution envisages by the modern world-teachers, Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, they are examples of the work perfectly done, where the instrument steps aside, and allows the Divine Musician to reveal Herself.

        5 out of 5 stars Skillfull.......2006-02-15

This album presents the typical Shahid Parvez Khan with his meditative and gayaki style in alap and jor and his astonishing virtiosity in jhala and gat. You will immidiately observe how much Ustad Shahid is influenced by his uncle the late Ustad Vilayat Khan, and also by Nikhil Banerjee when he uses the tantrakari style.
Regreatably, Shahid Parvez never reach the depth of Vilayat Khan or Nikhil Banerjee. The recording quality is not perfect, but it's tolerable.

        Recommended.

ok, my personal opinion is that Ravi Shankar was amazing and that Nikhil banerjee learnt a lot from him. If you read Annapurana devis biography she mentions that she would allways scold Nikhil banerjee for copying Ravi Shankars taans and and chalan
I personally think Nikhil banerjee, Ravi Shankar and Shahid Pervez are on the same level. After years of learning and listening to this music I put Ali Akbar Khan a notch below these three
(yes even his recorings from the 50s and 60s)
And definately Shahid Pervez is the greatest his gharana has ever produced

4 out of 5 stars Mr "Duncan" You should pick one pseudonym and stick to it.......2005-08-10

You should also read more carefully. The other reviewer (no relation to me) compared Shahid Pervez to Ravi and Nikhil, not Ravi and Ali Akbar. If only people would accept my judgments unquestioningly, they would cease to make fools of themselves. Decades from now, when we are all moldering in our graves, Shahid will be remembered as a very good sitarist who wasn't quite in the same league as Ravi and Nikhil.

5 out of 5 stars Mr Das Gupta You should not review any more articles online.......2005-07-20

Ustadji is the finest sitarist of this century. He has left no stone unturned with regards to his work and practice. To say that Ustadji is "almost as good as Raviji and Ali Akbar" is the most absurd thing I've ever read in my life. If people tahat listen to this kind of music would study it instead of just listening to whatever has been deemed as "great" by others, then everyone would have a greater appreciation for the music. Ustadji is peerless in his art and after the past generations artists like Raviji stop performing, Ustadji will be heralded as the finest sitarist ever by everbody.

        4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2005-06-06

"Andrew Jones" goes a little overboard in his panegyric to this fine musician. Suffice it to say that Shahid Parvez is the best sitarist of his generation, if not yet quite up there with Ravi Shankar and Nikhil Banerjee.

This is a nice CD and definitely worth getting. My favorite Shahid recording, however, is "Excellent Sound of Sitar" (Chhanda Dhara #71189) with Zakir Hussain on tabla. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't carry it, but you can probably get it from Sona Rupa or Shrimati's.

She recently recorded Brahms' Two Songs for Contralto, Cello, and Piano, with her brother, cellist Frank Hammond, and pianist Thomas Hightower, and a CD of hymns for vocal quartet and piano for Longyear Museum in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.

Catherine Hammond has also written numerous songs and instrumental pieces, a multi-media work based on Dostoyevsky's "Dream of a Ridiculous Man," and a short musical for children called "Mask-erade." Two of her most recent compositions, "Alleluia!" based on Psalms 92 and 93, and a setting of "Mother `s Evening Prayer" by Mary Baker Eddy, are included on this CD.

The name of this album, "Intimations," derives from the word "intimate," which has as one of its meanings " belonging to or characterizing the inmost true self : indicative of one's deepest nature" (Webster's 3rd New International Dictionary). On hearing these songs, the listener will undoubtedly agree on the appropriateness of the title.
