Stravinsky's 1945 version of 'The Firebird' is startleingly different than the 1910 or 1919 versions. Every recording I have heard of this 1945 version attempts ot make it similar to the 1910 or 1919 versions, completely ignoring all its unique differences and changes.

Upon hearing Chailly's recording with the Concertgebouw, I was almost offended by amount of difference one can here. Stravinsky changed articulations, rhythms, and even instrumentations, and Chailly masterfully brings all these changes to our attention. While I do prefer the 1919 version, hearing the 1945 version executed so wonderfully is almost enough to make me enjoy it more.

The Playing of the Concertgebouw, while fantastic, is only a slight bit below their playing on 'Petrushka'. Their failure to completely stick together while the Maestro accelerates is dissapointing. But this is mor than made up for by the fantastic playing of the wind section. This piece depends primarily on having stellar winds, and the Concertgebouw rises to the occasion.

If you are looking for an overtly romantic performance, this may not be for you. If you are looking for a recording that demonstrates the changes Stravinsky made in his revisions, look no further. It is played superbly.
