5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended album!!.......2007-06-23

I was a huge fan of Spineshank and I was sad when I heard they had disbanded. Silent Civilian came to be a really good surprise to me. Although I bought their album solely because it was Santo's new band it has nothing in common with Spineshank aside from being sung by the same vocalist. This is metal in its purest form!! It may sound like other popular metalcore bands but I think these guys are making what I'm calling one of the most inspired materials created in the last few years in the metal scene. Rebirth Of The Temple is a collection of fast, aggressive, and politically driven songs that will make everybody's veins filled with a rush of adrenalin. My favorite bands are Meshuggah, Fear Factory, Soilwork, and Silent Civilian has surely made its way into my best of best list. I'm really happy for Johnny for him having returned in such great inspiration and I'm already looking forward for their new album.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Metal is back, Silent Civilian proves it.......2007-04-02

If you think this is some kind of new wave of metal bullcrap, then go elsewhere. If you're looking for that nu-metal sound, then pop in an In Flames CD or something. Silent Civilian is the screaming, bruising, shredding proof that metal still exists, complete with guitar solos and lyrics that blow your mind.

Right from the eerie intro, to the epic guitars in "The Song Remains Un-Named," right through "Bitter Pill" to the closing called "Live Again," this CD will blow you away as you re-assure youself that this was released at a time where OzzFest began to sell out.

In addition to the songs previously mentioned, this debut album from Johnny Santos' new project has other highlights, like "Lies in the House of Shame," which in addition to heavy guitar and drum power, also has cryptic yet meaningful lyrics about our own foundations.

Then we're taken to "Wrath," my personal favorite. The song just flat-out rocks, and that's just a tip in this iceberg. "Falling Down" brings back the thrash sound of their inspirations, including their earliest, iron Maiden.

Actually, every song on this album is great on its own right. If you're still reading this, why haven't you bought it?

5 out of 5 stars Best Damn CD Ever.......2007-02-16

This by far is one of the greatest CD's I have ever spent money on

4 out of 5 stars Jonny Santos' New Project: Awesome.......2007-01-12

I was a big fan of Spineshank and when I heard that Jonny Santos was leaving for Silent Civilian I knew that they had to be great. The two bands are of very different styles, Spineshank's music being filled with more techno like beats and sounds while Silent Civilian is straight up metalcore with screamed vocals and most songs having a melodic chorus.

Although the songs get kinda repetitive (thus the 4 stars) everything else they have done is awesome. I see their next album being one of the greats in this genre. Although some people might not like their very political message in most of their songs. My favorites on this album are: Bitter Pill, Blood Red Sky, Force Fed, Live Again, and The Song Remains Unnamed.
If you like melodic metalcore with a real message instead of just words then Silent Civilian is for you.

5 out of 5 stars very impressed.......2006-12-15

As soon as I heard this I thought Spineshank meets The Autumn Offering. I was disappointed when Santos left Spineshank but I was very pleased with this SC album. Typical metalcore with some above average solos but his vocals bring it over the top for me. Enjoyable album if you like metalcore with melodic choruses.

i reccomend this, if your a fan of Killers, interpol, dark but fun Rock, then this is for you

5 out of 5 stars man I love this album.......2007-04-21

Boy Kill Boy ought to be played on commercial alternative radio (KROQ) and why they're virtually ignored stateside is beyond me. I'd take any of these gems to 70% of the garbage I'm subjected to. Great album. Great melodies. Read the other posts above mine. These. Guys. Rock.

...heh, and in my opinion, "Suzie" is one of the weaker album tracks (and single.) Go check out "Civil Sin" and hit me back.

4 out of 5 stars Play Boy Play.......2007-04-12

Okay I got this CD for a measely (...) thinking what the heck if it isn't good who cares, and then I thought hey if it's good what a deal, and according to Amazon and their recommendations for me this CD was in fact something I would enjoy. Well, at first listen I wasn't all that impressed. It began with the catchy enough "Back Again" but all I kept thinking was, "Great another pseudo pop punky band trying to catch on the bandwagon," but then by the time "On And On" rolled in, I started turning up the sound and realized there was so much more happening. It appears Boy Kill Boy reminds me of a 100 different bands, all bands I like - I get Kaiser Chiefs meet The Smiths and Depeche along with a lot of angst moody rock of the best in Duran Duran's back catalog. Needless to say by the time "Shoot Me Down" came about at the end of the CD, I turned around and played it all again.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent stuff.......2007-02-22

Upon my first hearing I thought, "Wow, these guys sound like the Killers!" But they definitely have their own flavor and stand apart from the Killers. It falls easily in that genre of retro-Revival, which I absolutely love since the 70's/80's glam/newwave/punk currents are vindicated herein as some of the most creative and driving music ever. All in all, it's a fun album and should be part of your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-01-09

A great, energetic album reminiscent of Franz Ferdinand. The music is VERY catchy and you will find yourself listening to tracks like "Suzie" and "Friday-Friday" over and over again. Great music from beginning to end!

Loved this album, if you are a fan of Adam I would recommend a purchase for the CD rack

5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2006-11-10

After hearing Adam in the Theater, then in the movie Rent I needed to hear him on his own. This is a great CD and I recomend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-06-27

I love Adam's unique voice and style, my favorite tracks being Beautiful Song, 10,000 Miles, No Trace, Book of Endings, and I'm With You (beautiful lullabye!). I first experienced Adam's voice in Rent, and had to buy his CD. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Reaches down to your soul.......2006-02-28

I first saw Adam Pascal in "School of Rock", and recognised him immediately as Roger from Rent, a musical I've been obsessed with for 5 years now.

And the minute I heard his voice I remembered one summer when the radio played hits from Broadway. During the "break", they played songs by Broadway's most successful artists, and sure enough, that's when I first heard Adam's voice. I heard "Mother's Child", and being Indian, was touched when he sang in Hindi.

His voice reaches out from the speakers, grabs your heart and wrenches it open and heals it at the same time. He can touch your soul with his wonderfully accurate and fresh portrayals of modern living and every human's struggle with finding their own life. The harshness in his voice is laced with tenderness and softness, but you can't ignore the edge. He doesn't pretend, he hides nothing.

After hearing "Mother's Child", I got "Model Citizen" and "Civilian", as well as the soundtrack to "Rent" and "Aida" which have all blown me away.

Buy this CD, you will love it!

4 out of 5 stars incredible.......2006-02-28

3 out of 5 stars Maybe If It Had Been Framed Better.......2006-04-04

I think its significant that this was the only PDQ Bach album which didn't include any sort of framing sequence -- that is to say, there were no intros or outros to any of the pieces, which put the work into any sort of a context, humorous or otherwise. As such, I found it to be a very confusing album. Add to this, the fact that the humor of some of these pieces relies on a visual component which, oddly enough, doesn't really translate well on a CD. As such, I think this is just about the worst PDQ Bach album of the bunch. Of course, Peter Shickelie is a great composer, and so even the bad stuff is worth listening to, just don't expect the belly-laughs you might "Oedipus Tex" or "The 1712 Overture." Its only for hard-core fans, or music afficianods who can catch the frequently subtle musical jokes in the purely orchestral pieces.

5 out of 5 stars PDQ AT HIS BEST.......2000-12-29

If you are looking for Peter Shickele and PDQ Bach at their best and funniest this is the CD for you. I am still trying to figure out how he can get away with calling it classical music! You really can't get it out of your head!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Something old...something new wave..........2004-07-18

"Playing the Fool: The Offical Live Album" captured GG just with the material they recorded before going "commercial" (for the most part)in their attempt to broaden their American audience. "Playing the Fool" catches the band in great form. It provides a nice cross selection of some of their finest material (although the highlights from "Octopus" shorts that terrific album).

"Civilian" actually is quite good. It's better than the other two "mainstream" rock albums the band recorded. Although it's missing much of the complex interplay of previous albums, the solid songwriting and melodies make it a memorable final gasp from this once grand, great prog rock band. I have fond memories of "Civilian" probably because I caught them on their last tour to support it at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. I seem to recall that they announced it was the last show of their tour (although they did do one in Los Angeles a couple of days later). Maybe I just misunderstood and they said it was going to be "one of their last shows". Anyhow, despite the fact that they had all had quite a bit to drink (as I recall I did, too), they played a nearly flawless set.

4 out of 5 stars Before and After.......2001-07-16

This set is a good example of what happens when a great band attempts to go commercial. Disc one is Playing the Fool, showcasing the live band at the top of their form. This is an amazing recording. All the players here are amazing multi-intrementalists, and they effortlessly mix straight rock with recorder breaks, glockenspiel trios and electric violin, all played in freakishly complex rhythms and with amazing vocal interplay. Listening to the second disc, then, you wonder where all that went. It's straight guitar-keyboard rock here. There's still a Gentle Giant flavor here, and this is definitely not a bad album, but the unadventurousness is disappointing. It's easy to see why they broke up after this album was released. Overall, the set is highly recommended. The amazing Playing The Fool far outweighs the relatively weak Civilian.

5 out of 5 stars I CAN ACTUALLY ONLY RATE HALF OF IT.......2001-02-02

I Have yet to hear "Civilian", but "Playing The Fool' is one of the most astounding pieces of live music I've ever heard. I chose to put my review on this double package release over another issue of PTF because this is the one that everyone has told me has superior sound quality. I hear the other one is attrocious. Gentle Giant was one of the best prog rock acts, much more influneced by King Crimson as opposed to Yes Or ELP. They had the dissonance of KC with a dash of a medievil folk sound that made them very unique. PTF is by far what I would recomend first for anyone looking to check this band out. The live versions of these songs are even better than the originals. Highly recomended

4 out of 5 stars Civilian wasn't that bad.......2000-04-09

I'm pretty hardcore Giant, I learnt to play bass from Glass House, FreeHand (+Crimso). I think that, despite being a beat-oriented, semi-new wave offering, Civilian had a good sound and some good moments, particularly Underground. I really liked it better than Giant for a Day and Missing Piece, 2 of their other more 'commercial' offerings. I saw this tour as well, at Bill Graham's Old Waldorf. They stuck to the new stuff, but I thought it worked, although I felt sad that they did sort of have to try to 'sell out', but those were tough days for progrock. Remember Asia and Kayak?

5 out of 5 stars 5stars/2stars.......2000-03-14

Playing The Fool is Gentle Giant's finest recorded live performance. Recorded in 1977 it presents material from the band's finest era. Each cut is terrific as are the performances. Civilian, recorded in 1980, is the weakest in G.G's catalogue. Very little of value here other than perhaps Shadows In The Street. The quality of the this two-fer is, unlike the ONE WAY RECORDS version, terrific. Playing The Fool is highly recommended, Civilian is not...Simon

Subtitled - Best Of the Army & Civilian Bands. Glen Miller's reign as the most popular bandleader during the second world war came late in his career and was relatively brief, lasting only about three and a half years, from the spring of 1939 to the fall of 1942. But during that period he dominated popular music. 5 out of 5 stars Gentle Giant's final studio album (and what a shame!!).......2006-10-19

"Civilian" was Giant's twelfth and final studio release after an eleven year career as one of the finest progressive rock bands ever to grace vinyl. Released in 1980 and, for the first time, recorded in America, this album was to be their commercial breakthrough and a gateway into a new era of music which would still be wonderful to listen to yet radio friendly. In doing so, they were a full two years or more ahead of their contemporaries, who did manage huge success. Genesis released the excellent "Abacab" in 1982, along with Asia's chart-busting debut album and tour. In 1983, the reformed Yes scored their biggest hit ever with "Owner of a Lonely Heart". Perhaps if Giant had waited just a bit longer for the MTV craze to really catch on, they could have released a video which would have cemented them into this top echelon of prog bands who managed to "make it" commercially. Alas, for whatever reason it was not meant to be. And I, for one, think that Giant was the most deserving of platinum success with this incredible release. Not that I dislike any of the previous examples, because I love them all for their great rhythms and arrangements coupled with an easy accessibility which really is a great alternative to the "difficult music" of the 70's. But Giant, even in the absence of their trademark earlier styles and influences, had that extra something which only hinted at what could have been.

Semi-conceptual in nature, "Civilian" was a no-holds-barred at the impact of modern life on society and the individual. Everything from subliminal advertising and the hectic pace of daily life, to the selfish attitudes of the "Big 80's" and the growing phenomenon of constant video surveillance was examined here, and the results are quite profound without being overly "preachy". "Shadows on the Street" is one of the most hauntingly beautiful melodies ever written by the band, and "Number One" should have been the first of many hit singles for the band with its straightforward rock feel and lyrics almost anyone can identify with; namely, the frustration felt by having people who you're only trying to help take absolute advantage of you.

The only gripe I have with the CD releases of this album is that the ending montage after the final fade of "It's Not Imagination" was not carried over from the original vinyl. As with 1973's "In a Glass House", the album ended with a brief montage of snippets from the album. However, instead of a section from every track as with House, this one was merely four snippets, which when taken together said "that's all there is". Giant knew, on some level, that this would be their final release, and while that little sound bite is no huge deal really, it still feels like something is missing when compared to the old vinyl dub onto cassette tape I wore completely out when I first discovered Giant in the late 80's. On the bright side, the new CD releases have a clean recording of a track which was left off the final version (as opposed to the first CD release which had the track copied from an ancient cassette copy), called "Heroes". The song is as good as any on the album and would have been included but for the fact that the band did not want the grooves on the vinyl copies to be too close together.

There simply is not a weak track on this CD, and in my humble opinion it stacks up against Giants best prog efforts from the early and mid 70's. Those of you who have a problem with the more commercial efforts from the great progressive bands can skip this release, but in doing so you are missing out on some wonderful music, the fact that there are no crazy meter changes or experimental arrangements nonwithstanding. If you don't have this gem in your collection yet, you should definitely consider picking it up, and reflect for yourself on what could have been in Giant's future, if only the chips had fallen a bit differently.

      1 out of 5 stars What a shame.......2006-05-12

I truly love Gentle Giant, but this album shows how corrupt the world we live in really is. I believe that Gentle Giant had a modest fan-circle, so they decided to boost it by making commercial (I can't say the word, though I'd really love to). Or maybe I do them injustice, cause they had an accident on their tour which made them loose their ingenious sense for perfection. If you compare this album to their early ones, it's like a rocket scientist became a garbage man, cause he thought the pay is better. If you like earlier music of Gentle Giant, don't buy this one. This album is blasphemy.

      5 out of 5 stars Sharing a thought & remembering a 'pop' GG classic.......2005-08-05

Although I haven't heard Civilian in over 20 yrs., I always felt Men at Work(bascially Colin Hays-is that the right name?)ripped GG off with Business as Usual. They(with the help of MTV)achieved what GG tried to avoid their entire career, commercial sell out. GG weren't a bubblegum rock band. It's ironic, that both these albums were on Columbia/Sony originally. It's a shame Civilian still isn't, I'm itching to hear it again. Listen to a couple of songs on the Men at Work CD & you'll hear the resemblance. I would like to see someone else's response or opinion on the matter. Civilian also reminds me of Yes-Drama, another great underrated album released in 1980 or so. Same era, same memories.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love This Band.......2005-06-28

I know many people would be surprised if i gave this album a five stars. However, I am giving all their albums five stars. They all deserve them.
This album was a sharp chagne from even the previous two. very guitar heavy and very mucha new wave kind of sound. I love this style of music, and it's great to hear it from the giant. I know teh band tends to frown a little on this period and on this album, saying they didn't ahve the passion they once had. On this album it honestly doesn't show. Very stron from start to finish. It is simple, and non varied, but the sound is so great, and the songs so interesting that I can't fault them. Better than hearing them repeat the same style ad nauseum for years. A good ending to an great career, showing the world they are capable of any style.

      4 out of 5 stars Superb Collection/Gentle Giant.......2004-10-24

I have this in original content album(especially sealed plastic). I just order cd(remastered)such a superb direct free flowing collection from GG. This was their last album/cd from their ten-year career and produced, engineered in Los Angeles,CA.USA I believed that Shulman, D. directed the movement and pure flow of this rock n roll finish that is rock at it's best but different from the FREE HAND/INTERVIEW level composition's. The complexity and intricate music of GG is not in this cd. This album still rocks/a harder side commercial side but still quality musicship of GG. Those GG devoted fans won't be dis-appointed-the more u play it the better it sounds. JUST LIKE WINE AND CHEESE!
