The movie for which these extractions provided the soundtrack was indeed quite interesting. Sadly, it's now unavailable. Gould has achieved a cult status unlike that of any classical musician since Caruso or Paganini. Unfortunately, he devoted his considerable talents to the performance of music for which he was particularly unsuited psychologically, on an instrument equally unsuited to the music.
Thomas Bernhard, an Austrian, has written an insightful novel, titled The Loser, which probes Gould's obsessive/depressive personality. I strongly recommend it to devotees of the Gould cult.

Glenn Gould artistry inspires nothing but admiration. Each piece on this cd is so entertaining and delightful! For example, Bach's Prelude English Suite for keyboard No. 5 in E minor & the Prelude and Gigue from the English Suite for keyboard No. 2 in A minor. Bach's Little prelude in D Minor tramples its identity and morphs into adolescents. The Beethoven on this cd is also remarkable and the effects he creates for some of those pieces is undeniably unique and certainly sets an interpretive standard.

And lastly, to think Gould could no longer suprise me he introduces us to some great compositions and what would become my favorite tracks on the CD: Piano Sonata in B minor, Op. 5 Adagio cantabile composed by Richard Strauss and 11. Sonatina No. 2, for piano in E major, Op. 67/2 Andantino composed by Jean Sibelius. These two recordings belong to that set of moments whose ambiance of silence and withheld passion yearns the soul.

Incredible music making.

This is a brilliant album! It would be nice if everything were recorded in DDD. Other than this, I cannot recommend a change that would make this CD more enjoyable than it already is. Gould is a recognized master, but seldom is an album published that provides a listener the opportunity to see the range and power of such a performer in action. If you enjoyed the movie, this CD will be a welcome addition to your collection. And even if you haven't seen the movie, you'll enjoy this musical glimpse into Gould's life.

This is an outstanding soundtrack to an outstanding movie. For the listener who is new to Gould, this CD presents Gould's talents as a Bach performer, as well as his less well-known, but equally impressive talents as a performer of late 19th and 20th century music, with some stringent, thrilling Beethoven to boot. For the experienced Gould listener,it provides a chance to compare and contrast Gould's approach to various forms of music. One of the most noteworthy pieces on this CD is the interpretation of the Adagio from Richard Strauss's youthful Piano Sonata in B minor. Recorded close to the time of his death, it reveals the rare pianist who can play Romantic music with incredible clarity and emotional depth. Gould's approach to this piece is tender and wistful, distant in a way that affords it a sense of isolation and profound sadness. The reprise of Bach's music at the end of the CD is chilling and bursting with Gould's uniquely emotional approach to this music. Listening to this CD is an experience in and of itself. Don't miss out on it.

If you have studied music all your life and grown weary of the state of the performing arts and are trying to remember why you fell in love with it initially (like me) OR if you have never appreciated classical pianio music and are wondering what all the fuss is about BUY THIS RECORDING AND LISTEN TO IT! As a pianist who gave up the trade in favor of my mental health this stuff made me break out in a cold sweat. It's the real thing.

When the LP entitled Film Encores Volume I was released in stereo in 1957, Mantovani was already established as one of the world's best selling recording artists. Film Encores, however, became the maestro's most successful recording in the United States, reaching number one and remaining on the Billboard charts for two years. Now you can hear this phenomenal gold record in its entirety on CD and you will understand why it ranks #32 in the top 100 LPs of the 1950s. Many of these tracks have appeared on several CD compilations over the last few years, but songs like My Foolish Heart, Intermezzo, Laura, and Hi Lili Hi Lo are making their first appearance. Coupled with this best seller is another of Mantovani's historic LPs, Music from the Films, which was his first recorded originally in stereo sound. It represents a more classical, movie soundtrack genre, but is equally well orchestrated and performed with twin pianos. Each CD in this recent Vocalion set of grand romantic melodies and popular film music is worth listening to and enjoying repeatedly, as they were listened to and enjoyed by a war weary generation in the 1950s who bought millions of his sophisticated easy listening recordings. In this centennial year 2005 of Mantovani's birth, the release of these time honored albums on CD is a fine tribute to the late maestro and a good fortune to the endless audience desiring more of the peaceful, cathedral-like sounds of his string-laden orchestra.

I know many classical connoisseurs love the Naxos Historical series, but I have only managed to pick up a handful of them so far. While I love old mono recordings, anything that was originally produced in the pre-LP era just doesn't sound that great to me. Anyway, I made an exception with this title because I love violinist Jascha Heifetz. I only became a serious collector of classical music recently so I missed many of the titles in RCA/BMG's "The Heifetz Collection" when they were widely available. Now most of those titles fetch outrageous prices in the Amazon Marketplace because of their scarcity. One such disc is Volume 21 featuring performances of the Walton and Gruenberg Violin Concertos. However, that very same Walton performance recently became available on a BMG Import two-disc set devoted to the composer. Needless to say I snatched it up (at a sane price to boot), and then bought this Naxos title in order to get the Gruenberg. The style of the Gruenberg Concerto is very reminiscent of Gershwin in that it features elements of swing-era jazz incorporated into a classical setting. It is an enjoyable piece but certainly not a must have for the casual fan. The bonus with this Naxos CD is the opportunity to hear Heifetz's original mono recording of Prokofiev's 2nd Concerto from 1937 with Koussevitsky leading the BSO. The standard bearer of this work for me has always been Heifetz's 1959 stereo remake with Charles Munch leading the Bostonians. It was wonderful to finally compare the two performances, especially since they not only feature the same violinist, but also the same orchestra. While it is a fascinating account, alas it does not dethrone the stereo version. Though in the future, I will have to consider Naxos Historical CDs more seriously because they do offer some of the greatest performances of the 78 era, in surprisingly good sound and at very reasonable prices.

      This album is among the most enjoyable in my entire disc collection of classical music, opera, song, popular, etc. It's definitely not highbrow, just top artistry (4 string musicians and pianist) applied to accessible beautiful music in several genres, best characterized as "parlor music". However, this phrase doesn't begin to express the beauty of this album. Unfortunately, it's virtually impossible to find for sale. Perhaps the highlight is an almost 13 minute cut from the film music of Nino Rota who wrote music for a number of Fellini's movies. I have another of "I Solisti"'s discs "And the Band Played On", also superb and highly recommended.

          Product Description

          Cinematic Volunteer plays like an imaginary soundtrack. It has the duo's trademark sound but this one is more eclectic and perhaps more diverse. From groove oriented ethno- ambience to a classical chamber feel. Vedvik's main musical partner and collaborator for the last few years is Martin Tillman, a world-renowned Swiss born cellist. Tillman's acoustic and electric cellos can be heard on many of Vedvik's recordings, including Slowdiver and Sutra Spin. They have now composed and recorded three albums together, Lingo, Eastern Twin and Cinematic Volunteer. All albums produced by Vedvik. Vedvik and Tillman wrote several cues for the Michael Mann film "Ali" which also featured two songs from "Eastern Twin". Their music has also been used on several TV programs including the Olympics. Tillman's cello is featured extensively on the score of Black Hawk Down, Hannibal, The Pledge, MI 2, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ring and Ring2 and on over a hundred more major motion pictures. Vedvik wrote music for the Norwegian TV Series "Fox Gronland" which won an award for best drama production in Norway.
